  1. Haines is the main port to re-attach to the Alcan. You have to drive back into Canada and then left to the Alaska border. It's a few hundred miles. You can switch ferries either in Haines or Skagway and end up in Whittier (50 miles south of Anchorage).
  2. Let me know if you need anything once you make it into Alaska (Anchorage area). Dan
  3. Where are you getting off the ferry after Juneau - Haines or Whittier?
  4. I just searched for "Alaska" to see who's coming up this summer and ran across this post. Here is what you need: http://www.ventura-mca.com/products/lightguard.aspx It is a round plexiglass light guard that attaches with a few pieces of velcro. Mines been on for years. I bought 2 (just in case). You need their Part No. VP113. The Venture is not listed (last I knew) but this is the part you need. It is the same part for the Buell Blast Y, Suzuki M50 Boulevard and many others. I think the cost was about $20. A friend went down the Alcan last year and I recommended this to him. After ignoring my recommendation he emailed me from the states asking where he might buy a cheap headlight. Haha. There are no cheap headlights. Good luck. When do you come up? What is your itinerary? my STAR group has rides around the area scheduled www.anchorage299.com. Dan
  5. The site is fixed but last I knew there were still some bugs (things programmers forgot to put back on the site). You might need to delete your Cookies and Previously viewed webpages so your computer doesn't just pull up the one it has stashed. The look of the Venturers site is completely different from before. I'm still getting used to it.
  6. Hi Peter - This is Dan (your local STAr Pres, etc....). Peter is new to forums and posting on them. The 2 things he really needs info on are: 1) An after-market centerstand for the VStar 1300 Tourer. 2) Some insight on belt driven motorcycles and middle-of-a-long-trip repair of the belt should there be a problem. Personally, I thought the belts were pretty reliable and durable. But Peter had an issue on his trip and then fought a dealer who spent more time trying to get money out of Peter than he did trying to fix the problem in a timely manner. Seemed the dealer knew he was driving through town and thought Peter was desperate for a quick, expensive fix. The NEW bike was still under warranty. Peter - Please tell us who this dealer was. I'm sure others here know of him and his reputation. Any thoughts guys?
  7. That's pretty much what I did but I installed mine on the other side of the bike so I didn't deafen my passenger if I had the sidecar installed. http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/Danlapan/Footrest/Footrestsupport018.jpg
  8. Sending payment for one mug. Thanks for doing this. Dan
  9. Cool! I'm very interested. Can I see a picture of the lowers you're building when you get to it? How much for a set of each? Do I need any hardware to attach the lowers? 100 degree weather? What's that?
  10. Depending on where folks come from it can take 3 - 7 days just to get here. Some folks on the 2007 Ride-In took the ferry back to Bellingham, WA. The ferry leaves Haines, AK which is about 700 miles from Anchorage. There is also a ferry from Whittier, AK but you would have to coordinate your connections. The Ride-In I hosted was for 9 days though we rode bsically 6 of those days. On Wednesday (our rest day) soe folks still rode to destinations not on the agenda. There's lots to see and do. I would recommend not coming up until after May 15th just to make sure the weather is warm enough. I am available after the second weekend of June until just before the 4th of July. I have some businesses I run at some summer events. Here's a teaser.http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/Danlapan/BirdRidgeMay252006003.jpg
  11. Well, the couple you talked to in Washington are idiots. Enough said. If you would like some information about Alaska, ask. I hosted a Ride-In for the Venturers in 2007 (and invited members from here also). A Venturer member kept piping in about how bad the roads are. I finally asked him where he got his info. He told me he had just watched a documentary about the building of the Alcan. If I coulda reached through the Internet.... Alaska is paved. And so is the road to Alaska. Yes, there is construction. isn't there construction around your city, state and everywhere in between? Somebody organize a ride up here for next summer in late June and I'll host it.
  12. Steve - will you send the pics to me also. subterranea@juno.com I have a Champion Escort I bought on ebay a couple years ago. I then ordered the bike-side parts from Champion. Long story short: Their customer service (Larry) sucks. I never got the correct instructions and had to pay twice for the steering damper bracket. The instructions they sent me show the steering damper going through where our cowling (and damn near where your radiator cover) is. Mostly I would like a picture straight down between the bike and hack so I can see the angle of the connections. i see your hack isn't an Escort but I would think Champion would have their sidecars all hook up similar. Thanks in advance. Dan
  13. A member on the other site, SlowrollWV (I think) has copied the TripMaster armrests for the 2nd Gen bikes and has recently converted one of those to fit a 1st Gen. They are pricey becasue of the time and materials and Chuck is a one man shop. But they are the nicest armrests you will find. I bought the second set of 2nd Gen armrests he made (he has the first set). Unbelievable quality and looks.
  14. If you end up in Anchorage and need anything you can call me 907-440-7159. I hosted a Ride-In in Alaska in 2007 and have lived here for 26 years. Two European bikers just came down from Prudhoe Bay (Deadhorse) last week. It was -32 when they left the North Slope. They travel the world and stopped by the local motorcycle show to share their stories. I think they were on BMWs. The rode north from Fairbanks is paved for a while. Drive slow, there are frost heaves that will throw you for a loop. After the pavement it only gets worse. People have gone north on big bikes like Goldwings and such but the rode was built for truckers, not motorcycles. Wear a full face helmets because the rocks from passing vehicles hurt. I wish you luck. Dan
  15. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105CSBB2/JVC-CS-BB2.html?tp=114&tab=morephotos&s=0 I saw this subwoofer last year and have considered it for the bike (Note: it now says discontinued). It is meant to add some bass for vehicles with little space. With this you could then use the existing speakers for mids and highs and the subwoofer for the lows. Our bike doesn't really produce much in the lows. I haven't checked to see if this product was upgraded, replaced or simply discontinued. If it's available I'm getting one. I've noticed most of the negative (non-positive) reviews were from people expecting too much out of this item. It's not a fix all million watt subwoofer. It is added bass for vehicle with little space. I switch the bass settings when I switch from speaker to headset but I can't remember which I add and which I lessen. I have added the Pioneer speakers in the front and do believe they are better than stock but I need to go to a secluded area away from neighbors to really test things. I have the Pioneer speakers for the rear but dread breaking the armrests apart to make the change.
  16. If any of you are ever in the Anchorage area and need some tour guiding or want to compare bikes the4n give me a yell. I hosted a Ride-In here last summer (for the other site - but invited those here also). I might host another one someday. There are only a few main roads in Alaska but they lead to some incredible places. We toured for over a week and still wish we had more time. Bring warm clothes.
  17. I run a booth at the Alaska State Fairs where I engrave (stamp) Pet ID tags. It's manual and one letter at a time. How many do you need made by when? What do you want on them? I assume you have the blanks. Email me pics and any other info you might have. subterranea@juno.com
  18. I have the 2 saddlebag liners and the trunk bag. Bought them on ebay for $50 total. If you watch it long enough and shop right you can find what you want for the right price. Just search "Yamaha Venture." All have the Yamaha logo on them. You can get them from the Yamaha website too if you've got that kind of money. I also have the trunk rack bag (ebay for $35 I think). I don't like the look of the trunk rack so I have never installed it and thus have yet to use the rack bag. I would love to find an extra liquid silver trunk lid to mount my rack on and then switch lids for trips. Good luck.
  19. Dude, do I have to solve all your problems? (ahem, leveling links - remember?) I have the DiamondR footrests for me little girl. It allows her to put her feet on something not known as a saddlebag. She loves them. The leveling links are adjustable. They don't have to be in the forward position all the time. The ones I have caused the passenger floorboards to fall down unexpectedly so I built a little bracket to hold up the footrests. Allen at DiamondR has stated they have since fixed this issue. If you end up having this problem let me know and I'll hook you up with the info. But enough of that. We rode to Hope today. Beautiful weather. We ate at the Seaview. We enjoyed ourselves so much we didn't even think about you. The weather's here, wish you were fine. I have photos of the footrest (and Alaska stuff) on photobucket. I think it's visible to the public. My account is danlapan/footrest http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/Danlapan/Footrest/th_Footrestsupport017.jpg
  20. This is what I use: http://www.m-j-enterprises.com/beverage_holders.htm
  21. The kitty know a nifty tricky to get in and out the door when it needs to take a sh:whistling:y.
  22. Yes I can take it with me!!! http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/Danlapan/Venturers/th_BikeTrailerMay2006011.jpghttp://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/Danlapan/Venturers/th_ToBeLabeled219.jpg
  23. Last post didn't work, I'll try again. I sat across from one of these at the motorcycle show last weekend. I must have watched the video a million times. We decided it looks and rides like a snowmobile. Is it the human body's natural reaction to lean away from the turn. It seems to have a huge turn radius. I doubt it would get around easily in traffic. And, $16000 - $19000. It had a lot of accessories also - mostly clothing and luggage with the Can-Am logo - and very expensive. Let's see - 1 post. 4 or 5 replies. All mostly negative. I bet these are going to be selling cheap in the near future and parts will be rare to find. Maybe a collector's item, though.
  24. I own that trailer. The bigger one. I really like it. It is bulky though. The rear door is heavy and supported by shocks. I'm pretty sure it's the same guy selling these whom I bought mine from. He had them listed on ebay and I made him an offer of $1600. He painted it silver, crated it and shipped it to Alaska for $1900 total. He was a great guy to work with even though he built the crate from scrap lumber 2X4s that would have been better used for firewood. It must have taken him a week to nail that thing together. I had to mount the box to the frame and put the tires on. I noticed the front of the box sits on the frame but then the rest of the underside sits away from the fram about 5/8 of an inch. I didn't think this would be good for weight distribution on the 6 screws holding it together so I added a piece of 5/8" plywood which added to the weight of the trailer. I will probably replace the plywood this summer with something lighter yet as efficient. The trailer comes with a layer of carpet and a removeable mat designed for the trailer. The rear lights are just screwed in through the fiberglass. Some of the screws don't hold very well but I can fix anything - so I did. The wiring is very punk rock - just twisted together and electrical taped. I will be making this better this summer too. Hm... what else? He didn't know what a swivel hitch is so I bought one from Neosho.com. I let him know about these. Maybe he is adding them now. The trailer pulls great behind the Venture but is probably better designed for a car. There are tent trailers that weigh more than this so I know the Venture can handle it. I think if somebody added some rivets around the rear door and made the appropriate tarped room I think it's big enough to sleep in (in an emergency). I'm 5'8" and I fit in it. Nice guy, nice trailer, a little heavy, pulls great, he will paint it for a little more.
  25. Here is another place to buy them. http://adventurersworkshop.com/ They usually have the best prices. Be sure to put a power relay in the system so you pull power directly from the battery. it's worth it's weight in gold - it will make those idiots stop in their tracks as opposed to impeding into yours.
