  1. Trying to figure out what aftermarket r&r to install on my stock 87 standard. I am assuming it will be the Shindengen FH020aa. Thanks. Mike.
  2. So I rebuilt my slave cylinder on my 86' tonight. The kit came with a new pushrod seal. I mildly (without destroying) played with trying to get it out and eventually gave up. I'm assuming it gets wrecked taking it off. So how do you remove this seal? Thanks!
  3. My turn signals have become cold blooded. They only work when it's above about 72* (not a problem right now) I'm assuming it's a sealed unit and no fixing possible. I believe the part no. is 41R-83350-71-00. Does anybody have a spare?
  4. So what do you recommend? I used CB's quite a bit some 20 years ago but have probably forgotten most of what I knew about them. Back then they were still pretty big and I don't want to stick one of those on my bike. So what options are there for a 1st gen? I don't really care to break the bank to get one either. I do plan on getting the Scala Rider/passenger headsets, or similar, sometime in the near future and am taking that into consideration. Assuming that they can somehow be integrated into a CB somehow. By the way, I no longer have the factory stereo installed on my bike, so a stock CB probably won't work for me. Unless of course I could somehow connect it to the AUX on my aftermarket stereo. But then I would have to know the pinouts on the CB's connector. What kind of setups were some of you guys using on our "Leaf Lookers Run" this weekend? Thanks Bill
  5. The CMS and therefore the gas gauge is not functioning. The knob and faceplate are missing from my petcock reserve switch. There is a stopper tab connected to the shaft that points fore or aft. Assuming OFF is in the middle, if the shaft is turned all the way clockwise would that be the REServe position or the On position?
  6. Do we have any locksmiths here? It seems as though I remember a while back that we had a member or two who could cut us some keys. I ran all over the place looking for someone who could make a couple duplicate keys for my Maxim and the kids scooter locally. Not even any of the steelerships could cut a cycle key. I have the keys in hand and I'm assuming they can be made if the locksmith has the number stamped on them? Even if I can just get the blanks would be nice. Then I could take them to the local hardware store to have them cut. Thanks, Bill
  7. Okay. Yesterday I tried to install the RK mufflers I got. These are 07s if I remember correctly so they do have a cat. I don't know if that makes any difference on installation. I got a pair of the 31-9920 Chrome clamps. I've spread them out as large as I can make them with a screw driver. I go to put the muffler on and I can only get it on so far. There's about 1/4" of the mating pipe showing still. I've tried using a wood block and a hammer but I don't want to damage any of the upstream exhaust by pounding too hard. I'm thinking of the "Y" weld... don't want to crack that in any way. I used a little anti-seize as someone recommended. The end of the muffler seems to be spreading a bit as I push it on. I'm assuming this is normal. I'm also assuming that the clamp is supposed to go on up to the heat shield and none of the existing exhaust pipe is supposed to show. Let me know if you've experienced a similar situation and what worked for you.
  8. I bought a new to me 2004 Midnight RSV. I have only had it home a week and when I changed the oil and filter yesterday I noticed that probably the first owner of the bike drilled little holes in the exhaust on both sides. I have heard of people doing this before. I am assuming the reason people do this is that it adds to the overall sound of the bike is this correct? Thank you in advance. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta
  9. I am really starting to get frustrated...perhaps I should have just bought a new bike instead of thinking it would be fun to wrench on this one! About ready to call off the motorcycle trip with the wife this weekend and take the car instead. Anyways, enough of my whining. My speedo was working fine but during the past week when I had both wheels off to replace the driveshaft oil seal and lube all the splines I decided to grease the speedo cable. No problem right? So I thought. I was just taking a test drive and, wham...speedo started flickering and then dropped to zero. Odometer no longer incrementing and blinkers not cancelling. I pulled over and pulled the cable out, looked just like it did the first time I pulled it out...long coil cable thing with a square head on the end. I'm assuming that means it isn't broken. Did I perhaps not get it seated all the way before, did I break something else? The speedo gear is in the slot of the front fork so I assume that is OK. I am wondering if I didn't route the cable properly around the forks as there is some rub on the rubber of the outer cable. I can post any pictures needed...just looking for some help...AGAIN!
  10. Hi guys (and gals), Hope all are enjoying the early spring. The other night I took the Venture out (89 model) and did not get far. Headlight was pointing down towards the ground. Tried the adjusting nut, no change. Next day I went to investigate. Took the front headlight moulding off, and lo and behold, the freaking headlight unit is attached with 2 wire ties, were I am assuming there should be 2 bolts. I don't know what I have gotten into, bike came with a clear title but all kinds of alarms are going off. Did I get a wrecked bike that was rebuilt? Confidence is low right now.
  11. Is there any advantage, or disadvantage for that matter, to one over the other? I've been looking a little bit on the net and forums, but they don't go into any specifics. I'm assuming radials would handle better. Am I wrong? Or is it simply a matter of personal preference? Thanks, Bill
  12. I'm going to order Progressive Springs for the front end on my '83 VR. I noticed that there are different weights of springs, so I'm not sure which to order. I'm a big guy and often ride two up, so I'm assuming that I should get the heaviest that I can get. Any recommendations?
  13. I'm in the process of putting on Diamond R's levelling links. Are they supposed to be shorter than the originals? My OEM links are about a 1/4 inch longer than Diamond R's. I was assuming Diamond R's would be longer seeing as how they boost the height of the bike a bit. Thanks for any help. Doug
  14. Hi guys, returning rider needing help again. Please bear with me, I'm only 30 years out of practice when it comes to motorcycle repair, I want to make sure I've got it right. I've pulled my front wheel off to get the rotors turned. I'm sure that greasing the bearings is the proper thing to do as long as I've got the front wheel off. I'm assuming plain ol' grease is good enough. But if my bearings are bad, will I be able to notice this visually easily or do I need to clean them off with gas first and visually inspect them? Any other things I need to look for as long as I've got the front wheel off? Thanks!
  15. I've tried the Pioneer speakers and now have the Polk speakers in the front but I'm still not happy with the sound. Now I'm thinking about trying to fit a pair of 4 x 6 speakers in the front. Assuming that I can make them work, how much improvement will they be over the stock 4" round speakers? Don
  16. Newbie here. I will be picking up a used '99 RSV in mid July. Bought on Ebay and haven't seen it yet. My wife is very short and I had to put a "riser plate" on my Goldwing so her feet would rest on the floorboards. I'm assuming I'll have the same issue with the RSV. I've seen some ads for Baron's kit, but man, they are pricey! Anyone have a better solution for the RSV? Thanks, Jeff
  17. I understand that "up to a certain model number" there was a factory authorized replacement thruster washer to solve certain 2nd gear issues. Does anyone know what was the relevant number ? I am assuming that bikes manufactured after that particular number would have had the "hard" washer factory installed.
