  1. Nah! You have a major leak on your carb throat or the base manifold. Those manifold tubes can develop cracks, the gaskets under them can develop leaks, and the head surface develops all sorts of corrosion. Found this out when I replaced all 4 of my intake necks...
  2. Yes, this is true. Didn't think of that... I worked in a clean room environment and when we had to drill a hole in a test stand we had to use a vacuum to capture all the metal shavings. An empty tank held upside down with a shop vacuum would work. I mentioned the word "drill" so he would understand the idea that a hole needs to be made. Of course a punch will also generate a big hunk of metal as well...
  3. Wanna come up and help with my kitchen next??? Congratulatrions on the new place Earl! That shop looks excellent!!!
  4. If you look where you put the gas in you will see a long neck to retard slopping of the gas. Unfortunately the area on the side of this "neck" traps air and it is hard to fill the rest of the way. Punching or drilling a couple of holes towards the top of the neck helps aleviate this...
  5. Darn!! Wish I would have known, we were thru Ohio yesterday and I need Jaybird to touch up one of the pinstriping he did on my Malibu at the international... Bet that Trike looks extra special now!!!
  6. OK slightlyu damp suggests fuel is getting there but no ignition. This can be a multitude of things from corroded connection, bad coil or coil wire, or plugs. I would inspect both ends of the coil wires for any signs of corrosion as well as the coil ends. Put brand new plugs in as these engines can eat plugs. You may want to consider new wires especially if they are the original 25 year old ones! I would also recommend a compression test to see the condition of the rings and valves. Even though the carbs werre supposedly rebuilt, setting around for a couple of years ie enough to foul them up again. Also rebuilt does not necessarily mean rebuilt right!! Were they reassembled correctly, were they tuned?? All these things can come into play. You mentioned fuel problems, what kind of fuel problems?? You may need a new fuel filter, a tank flush, drain the carbs, etc...
  7. I'm thinking you are going to like the Victory...
  8. If I still have it (big if) then all I need is an address...
  9. Looks like a professional repair to me!! Thye other way to fix a crack like that is to strip off the green paint mask on both sides of the crack and then solder on a single jumper wire like from a resistor lead, etc and then paint over it with nail polish or something similar...
  10. Progressive shocks are a variable rate spring, and it will make your front suspension better than new, stiffens it up a tad so you won't bottom out your springs, especially when stopping hard. You won't need much air if any in the shocks which brings the front end down a little which is desirable on a tall bike like the 1st gen...
  11. We're home safe and sound...
  12. My $.02, Vstrom! Actually it should be whatever bike feels right to you as no two people are alike. Also, new vs used, check the APR's for both. See what your monthly payment would be for both cases. I once looked at a used car and a new car, $12000 used car vs $16000 new car and the new car payment was $1 a month less than the higher APR used car!!!
  13. Yes, also what Jeff said too!!!
  14. The reserve lighting box is on your front fairing frame on top in the center above the relays but behind them...
  15. Yes technically Jeff is right, but for what Cabreco did for his application you won't notice much difference in brightness although there is some. Eliminatring the dimmer fixed his problem and he is happy...
  16. I might have a spare still...
  17. Corroded connector on the bulb??? Bad reserve lighting module???
  18. Yesterday was a fun day!! On the highway we passed a middle aged mom and her teenage daughter driving the same make and model the same color as our car. A short time mom passed us. Shortly after that we passed her again, then she stayed behind me. As we were passing a semi she was a little close to my rear so I floored it to put a good half mile between us. A little later there she was right behind me, stuck like glue. I'd pass, she'd pass. I set the cruise at 76 she was behind me. Set te cruise at 70 she was still behind me pacing me! This kept up for a good hour until they finally exited. Sigh!! So ended our superslab romance!!! I'm thinking there was also some high UFO activity over Iowa yesterday. Every once in a while the GPS would place us travelling somewhere either to the left or the right of where we actually were! The "BITB" even had us driving thru a lake and up a creek!! a little while later it would recover us on the right highway. It even lost track of how fast we were doing, saying I was doing 62 when I was doing more like 75! I can see it now, "Officer, my GPS said I was only doing 62 so I believed it..." Had an excelent time meeting up with Mike, EUSA1 and his posse at a rootbeer stand. This place makes it's own root beer and it is possibly the best root beer on the planet!! Finally made Portage IN for the nite. Today we may try to make it all the way home, about an 8 hr drive which will end this most excellent vacation. Once home I will sort thru the 1000 + pictures I took and post a few...
  19. With the fork seals, it's not the mileage, it's the age! Those seals are 22 years old! As suggested, rebuild your front forks and install Progressive (brand) springs. The "Superbrace" is an aftermarket product and is roughly twice as thick as the stock brace. The best way to tell is the stock brace is rounded across the top whereas the superbrace is flat across the top. You may want to check out your front brakes for proper operatrion as well. You may have a piston that is frozen. It is also a good idea to flush the brake system as well... Welcome aboard!!!
  20. A lot depends on the mileage of your motor. Low mileage motors actually need a little bit of friction to properly seat rings etc so dino oil is the proper choice. Onmce the engine has over 20K on it synthetic is a good choice. I use 15W45 diesel oil myself and change every 4K but now that I'm over 20K I will probably go to Shell rotella synthetic myself...
  21. Congratulations to you two!!! We are right behind you on October 7th, we will celebrate 23 years! We get to celebrate by watching my niece get married that day. She had no idea it was our anniversary that day! I certianly understand the "patient" remark!!!
  22. Sounds great Mike!! I'll know more tonight depending on how far we do or don't get today...
  23. Sure enough Mike!! We should be passing thru Sunday. Going to try to make Des Moines today. We will be thru Omaha this afternoon and may stop for a while. I'll give you a call tomorrow. Sooo, to catch everybody up on the last few days, Thursday we managed to take in Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Both were magnificant sites!! Friday we went to Belle Fooche to visit the center of the nation, and spent some time in Sturgis. Then we went to Wall Drugs. Took a bazillion pictures, especially in the motorcycle museum in Sturgis. So far I,ve already filled an 8 gig card up and am well into the second 8 gig card!! Just been too busy thatr I haven't had time to resize and post any pictures...
  24. So when are we going to ride???
  25. Since LED's are pretty much undimmable (they only dim slightly) I would eliminate the dimmer...
