  1. Here is a thread on cleaning the starter switch. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43027 The next likely culprit would be the starter solenoid not releasing as it should. Follow the main positive battery lead to find starter solenoid. On right side near battery. Gary
  2. Just got back from Golden Corral all you can eat buffet. Have a 10:00 appt Monday at hospital. Gary
  3. I put a Road Glide removable backrest on my 1st gen. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49041 Gary
  4. First thing I would suggest is to loosen the brake line at the rear caliper a little and depress the pedal to see if you get any fluid flow. This is a check to make sure the caliper is not blocking flow. If no flow at caliper line, do the same thing at the rear master where the line attaches, if none there, try loosening the banjo bolt that holds the proportioning valve on. If none of these 3 places shows a flow, then internally, the rear master has to be blocked between the rear outlet & the front outlet on the master cylinder. This is based upon the premise that the front caliper is receiving pressure. I don't think that the front metering valve is the cause of this problem. If you have good brake on the front rotor, that means the master is producing pressure. This pressure should be pushed through the master on both ports to the front and rear brake. If it was the other way around, and the rear was working, but not the front, the metering valve could be a suspect. This is not saying the metering valve is certainly operating flawlessly, but it is in good enough condition to allow flow through it. Gary
  5. This would help us help you. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58880 Gary
  6. How naked do you want to see? Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT5353-1.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT5439-1.jpg
  7. Not disagreeing with replacing the needle bearing, but it isn't an easy item to do and get right. Takes a guide tool and a press to do it. I tried getting one out of a spare final drive I had, and it did not come out in one piece. After that experience, I have left well enough alone. Gary
  8. I thought I posted back to this earlier. Damn percocets. They are all the same on the 1st gens. The R(eally)S(low)V(enture)'s are different. Gary
  9. I ran Iridium plugs all last year. Winter before last, I had motor tore down partially, did not split case. I had pistons out, etc. Pistons were perfectly clean when I put them back in. Put 6,000 miles on it last summer. This winter I tore motor down again, just to do some more enhancements to it. The tops of the pistons did not have any damage to them. They looked very normal to me. Little carbon build up, but nothing that was a concern. I am OK with the Iridiums, I think they cost a little under $7 at O'rielys Auto Parts. The gap did not change on them. Were they worth it, I don't know, that is something power wise it would take dyno time to verify. I reused them this year, that is if I ever get to ride it. Gary
  10. If you are getting good brake on the front rotor, but nothing on the rear rotor, there are a couple of places to look at. The attached pictures. shows the inside of the proportioning valve that is on the rear master cylinder on an 1st gen. This could be a source of the problem. The only other place could be a bad rear brake hose. Have never seen on go bad and block pressure, but I have heard it is possible. I'm sure Earl knows how to rebuild calipers and have confidence it is done right. So no pressure between rear caliper and rear master leaves the two items above. 1st picture is internals of valve 2nd is with cap removed 3rd is looking through valve with internals removed, no obstruction. 4th is valve on top of master. Something that has worked for me to get front brakes bled right is to push brake lever all the way down and tie in this position overnight. I have had this work several times on the front, but never had to do it to rear as I have delinked brakes and it has never been a problem to bleed rear. Gary
  11. Below are some pictures I have collected of VMax exhausts. In its stock form it will not fit on a venture. The VMax version of the collector crosses from the right side to the left in the area that the mono shock occupies on the Venture. In the area that the Ventures collector box sits there is a crossover pipe between the front two headers on the VMax. The term slip on's, in the VMax context are also unusable on the Venture. The Super Trap slip ons might be modifiable to fit, have not gotten any info other than pictures on them. I had a person get me an inside measurement from a VMax stock front pipe and it is identical to a Venture as far as I.D. goes. 1st picture is stock front headers with crossover pipe. 2nd is of stock complete system from front. 4th is of stock complete system from bottom. 5th is a super trap slip on system. The 6th is of a Marks collector on the bottom and a stock collector on the top. The 7th is of a Kerker header that I have been told may fit. They are about $1,100. If some one gives me one I will test it and return reports every 30 days until it wears out. 8th is of a set of super trap slip ons. I have been held a some by a guy in Kansas that rebuilds VMaxs for a living. I asked him about a 4 into 4 system and he said that would kill the HP. These motors need the cylinders connected to induce scavenging in the pipes. This is where the exhaust flow is kept moving in the pipes. There is one header system I found that may work and it uses a 4 into 2 system. And I don't know the name of it offhand. It ties the left cylinders into one muffler and the right two into a separate muffler, sides are not interconnected. Gary
  12. Dan, They sent me home for the weekend, see post #30 above. I am scheduled to be back at hospital 10am Monday and get back fixed. One of the hottest days here in years and we have had a power failure since 10am this morning, just came back on around 5:30. 33,00 in area without power. Gary
  13. I am fairly sure you set the preload on steering head bearings by manual. That leaves a few other items. Fork cross brace support (Condor has a nice upgrade) Worn bushings in the forks. Rear swing arm to frame bearing torque. Gary
  14. That is purdy !! How much did the paint job cost if I may inquire? Gary
  15. Just bought an 06 VMax front wheel for the bike. It will somewhat match the rear VMax design (rear needs painted this winter) Whadda ya think. I am over the top yet?? 1st picture, as it sits now. 2nd picture is new rim, I think I will use the red rotors. 3rd is of rear rim style as it sits now. Gary
  16. This is a guess, not having an RSV. If your not putting air in forks, could the fitting be removed and replaced with a lower profile plug. A decent hardware store should have plugs in stock. Guessing it might be a 1/8" NPT fitting, but this is sight unseen. I just looked at parts fiche and the above stupid idea may not work, so let's run this one up the flag pole. Will a 1st gen fork cap screw in? They don't have the air fitting in this position, it is built into inner fork tube. If it would help, I could get a picture of one & some measurements and post them. I am home at this point. It would take one of the guys that own the classic and the R(eally)S(low)V(enture)to be able to guesstimate this. I have a couple spare caps laying around, they are not in mint condition though. Gary
  17. A new development. Instead of having to sit in the hospital till the surgery Monday, they decided I could come home on one condition. I have to be on a type of blood thinner that dissipates quickly. It is an injection type. I have to be able to give myself shots twice a day. They went over it at hospital and I gave myself first one there. Diabetics do this all the time, so I am now at home, much more comfy than I would have been in the hospital. Have to go back to hospital, which is about 70 miles away, early Monday for the back surgery. Thanks for all the support & prayers. I will miss that night shift nurse, Michelle, though. She was a sweety. Gary
  18. Filter was put in this morning. That went good. Put in through my neck. I want some food. Gary
  19. This is a continuation of the thread below. I was supposed to have surgery on my back close to two months ago. I got a blood clot in my lower left leg a few days before the surgery and it had to be canceled. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=59851 This time, due to the clot and my having been on blood thinners for two months, it's more complicated. I checked in tonight (wed) about 5:30. Tomorrow sometime I am scheduled to have a filter inserted in a vein leading to my heart. They are supposed to go in either femoral artery at my groin, or in my neck. This is supposed to catch any clot that may break loose before it gets to heart or lungs. Then, I have to stay in hospital over the weekend. Monday, my Dr. is going to do surgery on my lower back and remove the extruded disc that is pressing on my spinal cord. I should be able to go home Monday afternoon if that surgery goes well. I will be so happy to get rid of this pain. For a couple of weeks I was taking 8 percocets a day in order to tolerate the pain. I haven't rode the scooter once this year yet and I am missing it. I have my laptop with me and hooked into hospitals wireless system. Got all my bike files with me. Its amazing how much Venture related stuff I have, 18 gig worth. I am sure I will be on here over the weekend, If you don't here from me after Monday, there will be a bunch of Venture parts for sale, wife has said if I go, garage is getting cleaned out. She has no idea how much I have spent on this, so it will be a bargain if I don't pull through. Gary
  20. I put RED loctite on the end screw. Don't want that one to come out. Gary
  21. Wake up and smell the coffee Old man, See prior post !! Gary
  22. You need: 4NK-18185-00-00 SEGMENT Qty: 1 93604-12037-00 PIN, DOWEL Qty: 5 93604-16092-00 PIN, DOWEL Qty: 1 These numbers are from a 1999-2007 VMax - Same #'s for 1st Gen Ventures. Picture is of both styles before installed in motor. Better one is on the left. Gary
  23. Then I would guess a stuck float would be the first option. Gary
  24. Sure would, but it is a 2 brush starter, same as a 1st Venture. If you want a 4 brush, you need a 1990 or newer VMax starter. 4 brush does not have the 4 screws around the center line of the body that hold the coils in. They are epoxied in place. Gary
  25. A 1/2 mm overbore should only net you about 1213.4cc's as opposed to 1198 stock. I would guess this was a ring resize bore? If you are running 1200 venture, the pistons are different than a VMax so you won't have the same compression as a 1200 VMax. With VMax carbs which are 35 mm and a lot bigger jets, and a stage 7 tubes you will be dumping a bucket full of gas in it. Did you change heads or cams over? Any exhaust modification? Air box change? TCI change? Gary
