Maintenance day is so busy that I often don't know who is doing what. I want to thank some folks but am afraid that I'll miss somebody, in fact, I know that I'll miss somebody so if any of you other can help me single out the folks who worked so hard to help others, it will be appreciated. As usual, V7Goose worked his butt off helping as many people has he possibly could. That guy is like the energizer bunny, I don't know how he does it but thanks MUCH Kent. Monty was hard at work helping people with gauge installs. I hardly saw him throughout the gauge. I know that the folks appreciated it and he did a great job. Ponch showed up a little later but I understand also got busy with the gauge installs. You have developed a great product for us Ponch. Thanks much for all that you do. Dingy not only arranged for us to do the Quaker Steak and Lube dinner on Friday night but was also there all day Saturday offering his assistance to anybody who needed it. Muffinman came all the way across the big pond just to work his butt off as usual. Thanks my friend for all your help and for just being the great person that you are. Squidley was running from bike to bike as usual. Syncing carbs and doing whatever else had to be done. I was unsure if he was going to make it this year but there he was. Thank you my friend. A lot of you ladies helped out with getting the food ready to be served. I know that I saw Mini in the kitchen as well as Becky and Lonna. There were others too but I just can't remember who all was lending a hand. So thanks to all and to the many others that joined in to help your fellow riders. I KNOW that I'm missing many. Please jump in here and offer a word of thanks to all who lent you a hand.

OK..I know that Lonna didn't make cheese cake this year but there WAS some cheese cake present and once again, it was very good. I don't know who to thank though. So whoever it was, thank you very much, I did enjoy a SMALL piece of it late on Saturday night.

I just hope you didn't leave that one that likes ringing the bell. He was a real pain in the back side.

Thanks for the update. We really appreciate you taking the time to do so. Now I still have some BBQ left over from Maintenance Day, I could send him a sandwich and then he could put on the shirt and relive it all. Still keeping him in our prayers.

Valve Adjustment!
Freebird replied to diggerc's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yea, you can do it but after watching Goose do mine on Friday at Maintenance Day, I saw how much work it was. It takes several hours. The worse part is just getting to them. As for doing them before syncing the carbs, it is not necessary. We sync many sets of carbs without checking the valves. -
I agree. If the plastic and chrome were good then maybe it would be worth sorting through the mechanical issues but it sounds like it is pretty bad. Unless you are looking for a real project and have the time and money to do it, you would be better off looking elsewhere.

I think he just hung them there because they were too small.

Nowhere NEAR long enough.

Just in case there might be a newer member here who thinks that I could be serious, I better point out that I AM just kidding. It was very funny and I would NEVER think about banning anybody over something like this.
-
Congrats. Looks like a fine young man but I'm thinking it will be a few weeks before he will be able to reach the passenger pegs.

You better just obey she who must be obeyed. She has a hard cast to kick you in the butt with now...you had better be on your BEST behavior. Hope she can join you next year.

Didn't RECOGNIZE YOU? You were supposed to be 10,000 miles away. Then you show up with that rug on your face. I was in SHOCK! What a fantastic surprise. It just wouldn't have been the same without you but I sure didn't expect it. No....that's no good. Don't want to make them sick.

OK....I'm going to tell the story and THEN we can discuss punishment. There is a certain Canadian member here whom you just can't be nice to. The member in question has long wondered about the performance of the Second Gen Venture as he plans to replace his bike at some time in the future. So, out of the kindness of my heart, I asked this member if he would like to take my '99 on a test ride. He was pleased to do so. I got busy and have no idea how long he was gone but some time later I got this telephone call. It went something like this. Him: Hey Don, uh...do you keep proof of insurance and registration somewhere on your bike? Me: Yes, it should be in the trunk. Him: Well, what do the cops around here usually ask for? Me: That is usually all they need. What is going on? Him: Well, I was going through that first town that you told me about, the first one you come to when you turn South on 58. Me: Yes? Him: A green pickup pulled out in front of me just as I was going into town. Me: OK. Well, are you all right? Him: Yes, I'm fine...but the bike...... Me: Well, you are OK, that's the important thing. Exactly where are you? Him: Just as you come into town, across from that DrugSav. Me: OK, well I'm on my way, should be there in about 10 minutes. Him: OK. So, I grab my keys and head out of the garage to get in my car and HERE HE COMES RIDING DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. LAUGHING LIKE HECK. Now...THAT was a BAD joke. Cruel and unusual punishment. Bad Canadian...BAD BAD CANADIAN. So...should I ban him or keep him around long enough to get EVEN. I'm not saying who is was but his initials are SWIFTY.

Well I have to tell you folks, I sure missed our Icelandic friend Jonas at Maintenance Day this year but he made sure that we didn't forget him. He had sent a couple bottles of the famous "Black Death" that he brought with him last year. Now one bottle didn't survive until Maintenance Day...it must have evaporated or something. The other survived though and got cracked open Saturday night. Those who were hanging around the Maintenance tent that evening got to sample it and MOST seemed to enjoy it. So...thank for remember us Jonas, we hadn't forgotten you either. Also, I got a call from Jonas a few minutes ago. He says to say hello to all of you and he plans to be here, with his wife, for Maintenance Day next year. It will be great to see him again.

Big Tom made Freebird cry, er, no, he made his eyes sweat.
Freebird replied to Bummer's topic in Watering Hole
Yea...that's the problem with TRUSTING people. You just learn that they are ALWAYS up to something. The clues are obvious now but I was sure oblivious to them. HEY...I NEVER claimed to be a smart man. -
I'm thinking that you are right. I'm also thinking that Dingy did a GREAT job suggesting and doing the footwork for setting us up at Quaker Steak and Lube. I see another tradition starting.

Really sorry to hear this. I never have enough time to visit with each person the way I would like to but did get to visit with James a bit over the weekend. He is a great guy and it is certainly too soon for him to be leaving us. Glad to hear that he is recovering and please let him know that he is in our prayers and that we sure expect to see him again next year.

I'm glad that Wes had a good time. He sure DOES get around. I know that he needs a small shirt and wants a cap. Will see what I can do.

Heck...it's too late now. You may as well just post it on YouTube. I'm sure going to close MY windows though.

Yes, the VTS changed to the MTA several years ago. When Yamaha stopped production of the Venture in 1993, their membership numbers started declining. They moved to an "all bikes" format and renamed the club the Motorcycle Touring Association. I have been to a number of their rallies and they are a good group of folks. My membership has lapsed right now but I was a member as recently as last year and will most likely renew. I don't participate with them much any longer simply because I don't have enough time but I still support them as I can. Rick Butler is still a member there and is a past president and board member. I was also president and board member for a while and still have many friends in the organization. Their website is http://www.mtariders.com

Big Tom made Freebird cry, er, no, he made his eyes sweat.
Freebird replied to Bummer's topic in Watering Hole
There was sweat in my eyes, the sun was in my eyes, the wind blew dust in my eyes, uh....I think I have allergies. I was truly and sincerely surprised. I had no idea that you were ALL so capable of keeping a secret. It ALMOST makes me look forward to the fall so that I can start wearing it. I will admit that I was VERY nervous sitting in that chair. I just KNEW that Mini was behind me somewhere. I kept looking over my shoulder and here she came charging from the FRONT. She's a tricky one.... I guess I do have to forgive her now though. You are all great. Big Tom...you are a special person for and I know you went through a lot of trouble to pull this off. Thank you my brother. Thank ALL of you. -
Maintenance Day is ALMOST over. Everybody is gone now except for Rick and Linda Butler and they are leaving early Monday morning. I just want to say a couple of things and I'll try to keep it short. I LOVE the jacket and will cherish it forever. I was somewhat at a loss for words and to be honest, a bit embarrassed about finding myself a little choked up. If I COULD have talked, I would have said this. I want you all to know that what I feel about all of you and what this organization is NOT any pride that I have accomplished something beyond my biggest dream. I feel no arrogance, no conceit, no feeling that I am anybody special. What I feel is truly honored that you have made me a part of your lives. I am honored that so many of you have chosen to be a part of this group and very humbled that you all take the time to participate whether it be by attending this event or any of our others, by your participation here, however you choose to be a part of VentureRiders. I don't feel that I am doing anything special for YOU.....I feel that YOU are doing something special for ME by being a part of something much larger than myself. I wish I could better express in words how I feel about all of you but just know that you are a special and very important part of my life and I thank you for that. Now...I'll say it again. If you have never taken the time to attend a VentureRider event, whether it be my Maintenance Day, our International Rally or any of the other rallies, meet and eats, etc....you just absolutely do NOT know what you are missing. Please take the time to do so whenever you can. As for Maintenance Day...this one is now over but we are already thinking about, planning for and looking forward to Maintenance Day 2011. I'll post a date as soon as I can and hope that many more of you can work it into your schedules. Not sure what the count was this year. I know that I received one report that they counted 152 bikes and there is seldom ever a time when some are not out riding for one reason or another. I know that there were more than 200 people. Now I've told Eileen that I think we are about at the maximum that will show up. So..............let's shoot for at least 250 next year...but ... uh.....shhhhhhhhhhhh.....she might here me.
