Once we had bias ply tires and drove at a break neck speed of 60 mph, now we have radials and think nothing of 80 mph. Funny thing is, metal bends quicker at 80 than at 60. Once we had incandescent lights that were hot and keep the snow off of the lenses, now we have halogen or even cooler running LEDs and have a snow build up problem. Once we had headlights at night only but visibility in the daytime was bad so now we have lights all day long. Do we stand out anymore? Not really so we go to a strobe and really stand out. In my opinion Freebird has a point and during our coffee stop on a ride this afternoon after I explained the accident, my fellow rider, Peter, and I looked at each other with the same Revelation look: do you think that in the flash of a moment that she took to evaluate the left oncoming traffic, that she may have mistaken the modulating light for a signal? Gary would not of had his signal on or he would have been ready to turn and so would not have been in the accident, so my assumption would be that the only thing flashing would be the headlight. Her mistake for sure, but one commonly and easily made. Should we ban modulators? I think not. We'll still use radials and LEDs for they are much safer, although they present new problems. I don't think Freebird was suggesting that we don't use modulators, but just want to point the hazards that may accompany them. That's a lot of typing, I hope I said it write.

I'm a Little older now, but when I was 16 I remember coming to a T intersection. I looked both ways and seeing that the way was clear proceeded to make a left turn, as I pulled into my lane I heard what sounded like a Grey Hound bus coming to a fast halt, no screaming tires, just the big diesel loosing rpm's. When I looked in my mirror there was this big brute farm tractor right on my bumper. Did I see him? Nope! Was he there when I looked? Had to have been. Seems that something didn't register in my brain. Max speed for him is 25 mph so he wasn't that far away. Did I forget to look? No I clearly remember looking both ways. So what happened? I don't really know, but I'd say there was an angel looking after him and me, we were both at the end of the line and he was probably thinking: dumb kid, didn't he look? he almost took both of us out! I guess at times our eyes will see things but if our brain fails to comprehend the info, then it won't process what it should have. Highway rules state that when you come to stop you must look both ways, wait 10 seconds and look again before proceeding. I don't think anyone does this but there may be a reason for the rule.

Front fork bottoming out....help!
Marcarl replied to ceastlick's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Are you sure the fork is bottoming out or does it just sound like it is. If your steering head is loose any little bump will cause a front end noise that may make you think you are bottoming out. -
Ah man you bring tears to my eyes, this is getting all sentimental, but that is the general feeling. Interesting isn't it?

Gary and Leslie 2007 Freebirds Maintenance Day

Good thinking and we're with you on this. Thanks Russell. -
Don't know who it is you met, biker2be, but we are a couple, nuts maybe, but still a couple. All good news from what I read here, only thing I want to add at this point is that there is such thing as 'just' when it comes to motorcycles. When you climb on the seat you need to give it your all, all your attention, and all your being, let up for one instance and it may very well be the instant you needed to stay out of trouble. With that said have fun with the ride, learn well and then practice, practice and then practice some more, and when you're all done with the practice, practice again and again. God Bless you Carl

Some Ultimate guidance was happening I'm sure.

Can't believe the news, but it's something that will happen, but that don't make the pain any less bearable. No words can speak or tongue can say what your feelings are at this time Gary, but prayers are said for you and my wish and prayer for you, is that through all this you may find the support you need.

Often times when Marca and I go out we get to the end of the drive and I go left (or right) and then it's her turn next, after that it's north, south, east or west and the next time it's right or left etc. Trouble comes when she says north and we're at a dead end heading north. When riding one never really gets lost, just taking the scenic route.

I could go out there and help her learn. That would be a nice ride and a wonderful vacation. Don't know how Marca would feel about it though, come to think of it I don't think I'll even mention it. Would be an awesome vacation, by the way, how much is the pay? Well I guess I'm no help huh.

To all that check your fuse block to make sure the fuses are contacting and power is getting through.

Notice that BradT always wants to get his 2cents in??? But they are all right, A safety course, then some practice alone and after that tell momma that it's now her practice time, yes she needs to practice too so that she becomes an integral part of the riding experience. Keep in mind that the bike is a machine and will do just what machines do according to what they are supposed to do. We are humans and can do what we please and how we please, and we can, if we want to, change what we do and how we do it at a moments notice. So we are flexible, but the machine is not, so we need to and can adjust to changing conditions. All we need to know is how to change and the benefits of that change, so that's where practice comes in. We create the changes and then adjust accordingly to manage the difference. I hope that all makes sense.

Clutch Whine-One last question
Marcarl replied to a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ha ha, you're absolutely right about the 1st gen thing, 'cept the 1st gen would have to slow down, get behind the 2nd and then it would catch up and most likely pass, except the 2nd genner would not know for sure, hard to distinguish a blurr. :rotf: If someone has a loose clutch basket, I would be the willing reciepient of one, I'll even pay the postage. It would be nice to have one to play with and to see how I could 'butcher' it up. -

I'm no machinist, but I would maybe just run a bolt though the hole in the center (put in a bushing if necessary) and then clamp the bolt into the lathe. Course that maybe not accurate enough, but then how accurate is a piece of plywood? -

Well I didn't really want to mention it but it has something to do with speed, course some may call that a similarity rather than a difference. -
Probably a HD cylinder, now we know why they run like they do.

Like to ask Question on weight
Marcarl replied to JOE MCDERMOTT's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I finally got my wife to quit turning her head at stops, and to try to quit counter balancing if it leans a little. Also I now pay more attention to my stop until I'm stopped,so to keep my attention straight forward, and try to pay less attention to whether there is traffic coming so that I may be able to roll on. Keep in mind that you'll go where you're looking, so if you're looking right or left when coming to stop, you're going to weave. All this has helped quite a bit and makes the boss more compatible. -

One difference between your lathe and an engine that comes to mind is the running temp and speed of the gears also maybe the back pressure. Ok that's two but what the heck, who's counting. Darn now that's three.
