New E3 Tires, New Problem
dmoff1698 replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I know the best minds are working on this but,,, what kind of strange noises would you hear if the tire were mounted backward on the rim? Shurely with the tread contacting the pavement in reverse there could be unexpected sounds. Sometimes the most obvious is the first overlooked. KISS!! -
DO NOT go through Montrose without heading an hour north and seeing the Colorado National Monument!!! I'm not a religous type fella, but that place could change my mind.

MIDRSV, If you are wanting to avoid Interstates 412 is not your road through Oklahoma. 412 is 4 lane interstate from the OK state line all the way to I 35, which is half way across the state. Not only that, but more than half of 412 is Toll road. If you're in a hurry and willing to pay the Tolls, it's your best route, but if you are looking around while you travel, you will be badly disappointed. If you have some time, get on hiway 60 in Missouri and come into the northeast corner of Ok where you will get on 10 south to Tahlequah. From there head west on 62/51. stay on 51 to 16 west to Bristow where you can catch Historic 66 on in to OKC. It's not a fast route, but you will see some real nice roads, several lakes, and pass through Tahlequah (capital of the Cherokee Nation). Lots of history there if you're into that stuff. Most of all you will see some of the best riding Oklahoma has to offer. From OKC west you might as well jump on I 40 to Amarillo (5 hours). There's not much to see in that part of the state unless you go further south.

Just because you have 40% tread left, please don't ignore your wear rate for the next couple thousand miles. You may be shock how quickly that 40% dissapears. New tires seem to go forever until you get to the bottom half then the rate picks up quickly. I'm certainly no expert on tires or anything else, and you may know more about tires than I do. Just saying....

Oh THAT Wompus Rack!!!! Why didn't you just say so!!!!! Really, I can see that would be useful for a lot of things. Mount a trunk or just use as is. Maybe mount a third seat (backward of course so someone can drag their feet in case of brake failure).
-
The "old timers" around here used to describe anything that was hard to handle as being "Wild as a Wompus Kitty". Now, I have never personally seen a Wompus Kitty, much less tried to handle one, but I can't imagine trying to put one on a rack. PS. She didn't really take my Wompus, I don't think I ever had one. As you can tell, I have no idea what a Wompus Rack is.
-
If my X wife hadn't taken my Wompus with her, I would have needed a rack to put it on also. As it is, I don't need a Wompus rack,,,,,I don't think.

GPS function worked very well through AT&T but.... For some reason when the GPS was turned on I had just about an hour battery life on a full charge versus 3-4 days of moderate phone use. So If you needed to use the GPS you better get there quick! This was a couple years ago and things may have improved since.

Don did say that all were welcome. I mean..if the Whitehouse was good enough to host them, they should feel right at home at Don's. I know if I saw a yard full of beautiful bikes and free beer, I would stop and make myself at home!

Oil leaking from right exhaust pipe
dmoff1698 replied to rcijr's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Is it possible that you have overfilled your oil past half way up the sight glass? Filling completely full will suck oil up into the air box, where a drain tube will drain it back out near the bottom of the engine. I seriously doubt the oil is draining from the exhaust pipe because the pipe is sealed air tight from the manifold all the way back to the muffler. There are drain holes in the bottom of the muffler to remove condensation, that is the first chance for oil to get out of the exhaust if present. -
How do you pick this d***n thing up!!!
dmoff1698 replied to a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I've had to pick mine up a few times and it's not too difficult using the right method. But i'm thinking that without the crash bars acting as a pivot point, it could be a whole nother bucket of worms. By the way,,,,,was this thread started to see who is donating their $5.00 per drop? If so, that was sneaky! I'm guilty! -
I didn't mean to leave the impression that I didn't care or thought that our country was doing fine in my previous post. What I was trying to say is that throughout history there have been ultra liberals and ultra conservitives and middle-of-the roaders. The pendulum of political opinion swings both ways, and always to the extreem. Then comes back, going to the extreem the other way. Good or bad, depends on your point of view at the time. If the liberals were in power for long peroids of time, this country would have been broke a long time ago. But without liberals we would not have progressed as far as we have in social acceptance of each other (still a ways to go), we would not have unemployment insurance, social security, medicare, or many of the social benefits we enjoy today. The consertivities have given us the industrial revolution, developed our natural resources, and developed the base that provides each with the opprotuntiy to earn a living. What I'm saying is we need both, in small doses at a time, to have a country which does not stagnate in it's own juices. The very worse thing that can happen is stagnation, without healthy debate and people working for change. Wouldn't it be sad if we lived in the same conditions as was present in this country 150 years ago? No, all change is not good, but neither is keeping everything like your fathers world was. God I hated "Where's My Cheese", but point taken.

In my almost 60 years I cannot remember a time when people weren't saying "this country is going to hell". Whether it was the Viet Nam protesters, the war mongers, the illegal immigrants or the financial hacks on Wall Street, they were all the death of this country. Been that way for the last 200 years. Guess what....we're still here, and this is still the greatest nation in the world. Study your history and you will find we keep doing and saying the same things over and over. Perspective is everything. "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself"

Rotella Syn users: Miles between changes

Reusing the oil from one bike in the other. -
Accomodations are available to anyone who has an ID card on Space Available basis. The AF requires you to have boots, gloves, long pants, long sleaved shirt or jacket, and eye protection (a wind shield is not usually good enough). Be sure to have your reflective vest with you, some bases require it all the time, others only after sundown. Depends on the Base. BTW check out the BX or Clothing Sales store if you have access. They sell a book geared toward the RV crowd which lists every military base in the world, provides maps, lists facilities available, rates and provides POC numbers to call for information. Most will not take reservations, but some will if you know when you will be in the area. This is a great way to stay if you can coordinate your trip with Base locations. Happy traveling.

How do you measure the total weight of your trailer? We have a farm store in town which has a scale for vehicles but that is a PIA and you have to get it there first. I have a bathroom scale which I could use under one wheel at a time, but that doesn't tell me the total weight. I've pulled a trailer for years and just winged it by estimating around 20-25 pounds on the toung. Never had a problem, but would like some peace of mind by knowing the true weight of my trailer when loaded.

I built a trailer a few years back. I too was looking for a roof rack, not so much for function but for looks. Guess what!!!! I went down to the local hardware store and bought a couple chrome towel racks from the bath department and bolted them to the top of the trailer. You can find them in different styles to match what you want. Then I went to the local automotive supply and bought some stick-on trim molding like goes down the side of your car. Cut it into the right lengths and stuck them to the top of the trailer between the racks. Looked good, total cost around $20.00 at the time.

First thing, I would remove the seat and put a volt meter across the battery leads. Start the bike and rev the engine. The volt meter should rise to something over 13 volts. If it does then your charging system is probably good. Next, temporarally disable you driving lights. See if the problem goes away. Regardless of the above results, remove the left side cover. Get a flashlight and look through the frame. Attached to the battery box is the starting relay, look for corrosion and gunk built up on it. Not only is this your starting relay, but is also a primary tie point for power distribution. I've had to replace mine twice on my 99 now because of corrosion. Acted just like a bad battery or a dead ignition switch.

Yesterday, wife and I were out and about, just enjoying getting on the bike for a time. We were heading out of OKC on the freeway when we were passed by two Motor Officers, riding side by side at about 70 MPH. I picked up speed and stayed behind them for a while just watching them. Like I said, we were traveling at 70 MPH, the two officers were exactly side-by-side. The thing was, there were never more than 2-4 inches between the tips of their handlebars, always perfectly aligned. They were talking and laughing with each other, apparently perfectly relaxed, looking around enjoying the day as much as I was. I followed them through several lane changes, passing cars, until they took an exit. Never did they move further apart or get ahead of the other, during these manuvers. They never looked down at where they were in relation to the other, they just seemed to know. I consider myself a fairly smooth and consistant rider, but I cannot imagine riding that close on purpose. The confidence you must have, not only in yourself but in your partner, is way beyond any I could muster. It was a beautiful thing to see.

Once you hit I-70 in Utah, hang in there till you get to Grand Junction. At Grand Junction, the Colorado National Monument cannot be missed!!! One of the best kept secrets of the state. After seeing the Colorado National Monument, drop south on 50 to Montrose. Eight miles east of Montrose is the entrance to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Well worth the side trip. Back track to Montrose (wave at my son as you go through) to 550 South. Great ride through the mountains into Durango.

The just checking your score can lower it? They work on the assumption that if multiple people are checking your score, with or without your knowledge, that you must be needing more credit or are making major changes in your life. Either way, your score goes down. At the very least it's flagged to watch for activity. Talk about a catch 22!!!!

Memories that I can distinctly recall Is going to the "out house" and fighting the wasps who had taken up residence there. Mostly they (the wasps) didn't care what you did in there as long as you were quiet about it. You younguns may not know what an out house is. I think we got modern and up-town when I was around 4-5 years old. Still remember pumping all our water with a hand pump. Even had to pump enough for the calves we had pined up in the feed lot for one reason or another. THAT was a lot of pumping! Remember drawing water at my grandparents house using a rope and bucket. Took some advance planning to take a bath in those days. #3 wash tub, heat the water on the stove and share the water with the elder family (oldest to the youngest). And yes, I grew up just fine!!!!

I won a gift certificate for half off any tire at my local Yame dealer. I'm thinking "cool beans" because my rear is getting way too used for comfort. Eased on down to the dealer the next weekend and told them I needed an E3 for the rear, and handed them my certificate. Sure thing he said. Brought out my tire and rang it up.....$120.00 + tax. I reminded him about the half off certificate, he said that was half off! $240.00 for a tire?? Yikes! He can afford to give away a lot of gigts for that.

Accidentally or on purpose? I have lost my left seat nut twice now!! Both times I found it jamed between the starter and the transmission!!!!!!! Lord knows how long it had been riding there. It was just luck that I saw it the first time, the second time I knew where to look.
