Had what was advertised as the largest motorcycle swapmeet here two weeks ago. took up three buildings at the fair grounds. didn't get to see all of it, but I could have carried all the metric parts I saw. what is it about ...... oh never mind.

How those things work. A friend was low on money in her account and the pike pass people wanted $40.00 to bring it back up to speed. She didn't use the turnpike very often (2-3 times per month) so she decided she would pay cash instead of the $40.00. Long story short, she put the pike pass in her glove compartment and forgot about it. Two or three months go by of paying cash for the tolls, and ignoring the monthly notices from the turnpike authority, when she gets this not so nice letter. Seems as though the pike pass was still being read as she went through the gates and deducting from her account even though she was also paying cash!! Of course she couldn't prove she had paid the toll. I guess the point of this story is don't worry about where you cary the pike pass, it will be read about anywhere. PS the pike pass people told my friend (after they got their money) that she should have wraped the pass in tinfoil. that would block the signal.

That's strange. I just swung my monitor back and forth and there was quite a bit of change.

I would say that depends on how paranoid you are. Like I said, If you know how to read them you can pretty much know all there is to know about the performance of your engine as it is happening. Everything from timing, stickey valves, fuel/air problems to bad driving habits. Since motorcycles don't have a common intake system, you would actually need to install four vacume gages to get the entire picture for each cylinder. Hmmmmm..Can you spell perminately installed Carb Tune? That certainly would be a "different" addition to your bike. But if you are like me, I would be busy watching the gages instead of the traffic around me. Sometimes there is just too much information available. This is a case of Ignorance is bliss!!!
-
Chiltons manuals had a troubleshooting section using a vacume gage. It showed you all the readings/movements of the gage and told you what they meant and possible causes. I used to use one all the time.

I keep trying to eat less, but the wife is such a good cook (honey are you listening?) just one plate is an insult! I have to go back for seconds. I've found that if I DOUBLE the time it takes to finish that first plate, I really don't want another. In Basic, they used to tell us to chew each mouthfull of food seven times, count it out. That will slow you down and take your mind off shouveling in another mouthfull. The trick is to get your stomach to say "I'm satisfied" before it gets over stuffed. Now if I could just take my own advice.

Just over 130,000 on my 99. Still going strong.

I just received my renewal notice from progressive. $162.00 for full coverage with $250 deductable. Includes trip insurance: If I have an accident that disables the bike, and am more than 250 miles from home, they will pay for a motel up to 5 days while the bike is being fixed or pay for a rental car to get me home. Thank goodness I haven't had to put them to the test. But that's what they say.

Parts for Front Wheel bearing replacement
dmoff1698 replied to LilBeaver's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Last year, I replaced my berrings because one failed completely. The replacement was not as straight forward for me as I first thought it would be. The problem is, between the right and left berrings is a pipe, apparently used as a spacer. Now this pipe is the same diameter as the inner race of the berrings and fit tight between them. The result is I could not get a tool between the pipe and berring to pull the berring out. After trying every tool in my box, I ended up cutting the inner race of one berring in two with a dremmel tool. This gave me a space to drive out the opposite berring by taping on the pipe. Then I was able to remove the cut berring from the oposite side. Nothing trickey about reassembly. Don't forget the C clips on each side. Good luck. Half the fun is figuring out how to make due with what you got. -
If the lifter isn't pumping up within a few seconds of starting your bike, you have something not quite right. It could be something a simple as the lifter being a little dirty, in which case a good crankcase flush may fix you right up. If you have allowed your oil change to slip past due a few times or if your oil is extra dark when changing, this may be your problem. A good crankcase flush is a good thing once in a while any way.

I think I got this. What I was NOT getting before is the concept that there has to be motion before Work is being done (my wife told me this the other day, but that was on a different subject). I was not getting past the idea that force did not = work. (She noticed it right away) So last night I put a wrench on a stuck bolt...put a weight on a stick and picked it up....and filled my wheel barrow with sand and pushed it across the yard. Now I understand what work is. Thanks guys You're the best.

This is going to take some digestion for me. Let me reread a few times, I'll get it soon enough. Again, thanks for giving me something to do for the rest of the evening.

And just remember, any directions you get from "up" here, you may have to reverse "down" there. I don't think our directions are the same.

I'm confused in the head over horsepower versus torque!! I have wondered about this for years and never got a satisfactory answer. I have read and believe I understand the definition of horsepower and what it means. I also know what torque is, how it's calculated, and what it does. My problem is when I mix these two pieces of info together in my puny little brain I get the idea that horsepower and torque should follow each other. That is..more horsepower should produce more torque. Conversely, if you need more torque, make more horsepower. Just seems reasonable to me. However, if you look at dyno results you see I am all wrong here. Typically HP increases to a certain point then starts to drop off, while torque continues to increase. This makes no sense to me at all. Can someone please explain the real relationship between the two (if any), and where my thinking goes south on me? Lucy!!!!Gu got som' 'splanin' to do!

Many of us have had this slow leak after the bike gets 7-8 years old. There is a rubber plug in each cylinder under the false fins. Four plugs = less than $20.00. Three bolts removes each fin cover, slip out the old plug and slip in the new. If you are quick, you won't even loose much coolant.

Oil Leak - Top of Left Rear Cylinder
dmoff1698 replied to TrainMaster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I just changed the rear valve cover gasket on my 99 last year. Ended up being less of a job than I origonally thought it would be. Remove the tank and the 2 chrome covers (2 bolts each) to expose the valve covers. Remover the bolts (?4 each?) from the valve covers. this is where it gets a little different. Try as I might, I couldn't get the valve cover off the engine! It would lift up about an inch before it hit the frame, and that was not enough to clear the valves inside. I tried everything I could think of and that valve cover would not come completely off! While messing around with it I knocked the old gasket out of place and decided to stretch it over the cover to get it out of the way. It slipped out so easily I thought why not put the new one back in the same way? Sure enough, the new one slipped over and around the valve cover with almost no stretching! Laid the new gasket in place, set the valve cover down on it and started putting everything back together. CAUTION: when installing the gasket it is easy to twist one side or the other. So after you get the gasket laid in place, check it from both sides (the check again) to make sure it is laying flat before setting the cover down on it. Even taking your time, this shouldn't take more than about an hour and you're done. I'll report about the front gasket soon, cause now it's leaking but I haven't changed it yet. In answer to your question, yes there is only one gasket which covers both rear cylinders. -
Do a search for "GM instrument cluster problems". You will find information on a class action lawsuit and settlement agreement. As a last resort, the same search will give you lots of businesses which will repair your instrument cluster with upgraded stepper motors fo $130 to $160. Better than the $800 the dealer wants.

Lessons learned while riding my bike (and living life): I was just making a quick run to the store to pick up a couple things. Three blocks from my house a stupid cager suddenly turned left in front of me and I had to slam on the brakes. I was really angry. Come to find out this was a 19 year old single mother who had just got off a 9 hour shift at her minimum wage job and was rushing home to fix dinner, throw in a load of laundry, and try to spend a few precious minutes with her children before leaving again for her second job. I needed to top off the tank before heading to a friend’s house. Total was $8.22. After having to speak up twice to get the clerks attention, I handed him a $20. It took him three tries to get my change correct. I stomped out wondering about the younger generation and what this world is coming to. Angry again. Come to find out this clerk is a 25 year old college graduate who is still living with his parents because, after two years of looking, he still can’t find a better job. Seems like he is in the same place as when he was 16 years old, except now he has $45,000 in student loans coming due and no idea how to pay. Not going anywhere in particular, when this idiot takes my lane on the freeway. Hard braking, swing to the right, almost too far nearly hitting the guard rail. Was that a damn cell phone in his hand? There’s no excuse for that you dumb, ignorant,…..! Furious this time! Come to find out the driver is a 60 something year old gentleman who was really looking forward to retirement next year. The phone call was from his broker who called to let him know that his savings he had worked and sacrificed for all those years was just gone. No one’s fault, just gone! I pulled up to a stop light when a bum comes rushing over begging for some spare change. Just whatever you can spare to help a guy out. Hell no! Get away from me! Why don’t you get a job like the “rest of us”? When is this light ever going to change? Come to find out this man is a son, a brother, a husband and father of three. All who love him dearly, but he just can’t get past the addiction that makes his life something out of your worst nightmare. He’s tried, he really has. But real help is always just out of his reach. A beautiful country lane on a sunny day, looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. I would be enjoying it a lot more if it wasn’t for the old fart and his wife in front of me driving 20 mile per hour. He’s taking up most of the road, pointing out sights to each other. Why can’t they get off the road if he ain’t going to drive that thing! Really irritated! I have places to go! Come to find out they are childhood sweethearts who have been married for almost 50 years and are looking at the places where they grew up. Remembering their youth. They are taking their time because her biopsy report says they will never get the chance to take this trip again. Yes I get angry when I ride, especially when someone does something stupid and puts my life in danger. But I chose to be there. I put myself in that situation. And my “problems” aren’t worth mentioning.

The first one is my ugly mug. Second is myself and the Mrs. Edith The last is just for fun.

Find yourself someone to play with!!! I can't stress enough that this will keep you interested and motivated to keep pushing and learning new things. Formal lessons are up to you and your ability to figure things out. But a friend, or group of friends willing to "bring you along" is essential. Learning to play is like being on a diet. There are certain plateaus that you will hit and without that extra push you may never get over. Keep it fun, play the music you like, do a little experimenting. Who knows, in a few years we may all be bragging that we knew him way back when.

As I have said before, I am no longer a darksider after the scare I got at speed. I went back to the E3 that I have run for years. Since the switch I have had no problems at all. Like some of you, this has been bugging me a lot! Especially since I have three friends who have gone over to car tires since my experience with no problems. (why me?) Nothing has come to mind until a couple days ago. I was down at the shop moving some stuff around, one of the things I moved was the c/t I took off. I got to looking at the tire again thinking I might find some dammage from high air pressure while mounting. Nothing obvious but I did see that the tire was rated as single ply in both the tread and sidewall. I don't recall any discussion of ply rating of the tires being run by the rest of you guys. But I can tell you the sidewalls on this tire are thin thin. If I remember correctly I was running almost 45 pounds of air when i went into the tank-slapper. I would have expected that much air would have stiffened up the tire but maybe not. Maybe it has nothing to do with anything. What are the ply ratings of the tires you are running?

Cruise Control Problem
dmoff1698 replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm a little supprised at 3.5 inches, would have expected a higher reading, but what do I know. Now I have to figure out how to hot wire the pump to get it turned on while on the bike. My understanding is that the pump does not start until the CC is engaged and cruise will not engage until the speed is up around 40-45. I'm quick, but not that quick. Dale -
Best of 2 worlds??
dmoff1698 replied to MidlifeVenture's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Several years ago I considered trying something similar. Remember the old "dump valves" hot rodders used to add to their exhausts to bypass the mufflers when the cops wern't around??? My idea was a similar setup, only that it would be controled by a vacuum actuated solenoid. Vacuum would be taken from cylinder intake ports (where you attach a carb ballance tool). The dump would be spring loaded to the open position. As soon as the engine starts, vacuum will pull the dump closed, routing exhaust through the mufflers. But when you romp down on the throttle, vaccum will drop allowing the dump to open and let everone know you're comming. Adjusting the spring at the dump would let you adjust the sensitivity to throttle changes. Like most of my ideas, I never followed up on trying to actually build something. -
Cruise Control Problem
dmoff1698 replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My CC has always seemed "weak" to me. As long as I am on a level road it works fine, but get into some hills and it will let the speed drop to the point where it disconnects completely. I've also noticed that the problem is worse if the engine isn't performing at it's best. Warn plugs, sluggish carbs or carb balance effects how well the Cruise works. My thoughts are that my vacuum pump may be marginal, working just enough for the easy stuff, but when it has to react quickly to hills there is not enough ooomph there to make the transition. I've checked for leaks in the line, but have no idea how to check for full operation of the pump. -
I have to give a shout-out to the Yamaha dealer in Shawnee OK. Walk in there and you are usually greated right away. The parts department usually has what I need and is very helpful. Not much personal experience with the service department, I've heard both good and bad. Selection on the floor is sometimes limited (no RSVs last weekend) but they have the reputation of finding whatever you want and being able to get it at a reasonable price. Things weren't always like that at this store.....I wonder if it has anything to do with the new Honda Superstore just down the street?
