First LONG ride on my Venture
jlh3rd replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
i got 12,000 plus miles off of my original 404's with no wobble unless i took my hands off the bars and poked at the end of the bars which would induce a low speed wobble...even with the new e3's on,...and tightening the steering nut, it still does a hands off, induced wobble..i've never had a wobble that started on its own i too noticed the heat of the bike last week but i was also out in Az. and NM...the one day we left kingman, went to lake havusa, then across central Az. to sedona and the temp was 100.and i gotta say that the air temp was worse than the heat from the bike....but still not as bad as a harley......i've never really noticed it here , riding in Pa. AND...did you stay a night at the Holiday Inn express in Moriarty, NM.......i think i saw your bike...and you,, leaving in the morning..... -
as far as ditching the truck.....unless you have family.....we go to the local dealer and ask to leave the truck there.....most of the time , they even let me leave it in the back in a gated and locked area....

Harley touring versus venture
jlh3rd replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
bobbyd83 my girlfriend had more complaints about heat with my electra glide than with the venture...actually, she has no complaints with the venture....to be fair, the harley exhaust probably had more to do with the heat than the engine....but still, an air cooled engine runs hotter, a lot hotter....i noticed more heat in traffic with the harley...none with the venture -
the entire route is 2300 miles......the best, longest, continuous sections are in arizona and east california.....i have done the williams, az. to amboy,ca. section (it continues past amboy) and then picked it up in east la. to santa monica...that took us 14 hours.....and we had no rain.......the book i have says 8 days min. but if you do any type of sightseeing or late starter/ get lost ( and you will)..make it 16 days. for ex., it took me 5 plus hours to go just from east la. picking up 66 to santa monica.....and you will find that the road starts and stops, changes names, becomes frontage road, and goes thru lots of little and big towns...it ends in chicago...there isn't just one rt 66 either...there are older alignments scattered here and there........but half the fun is doing the research....so...get busy......you'll have a blast...

yeh..thanks for the help....i did a google check and it appears i do not have route....
-
slick after hitting "where to"....my choices are :..address...go home...points of interest ( POI)......recently found...favorites....intersections...extras....cities....browse map....and coordinates so it appears i don't have route load capability.....i guess...
-
this is where my ignorance comes in...i have micro. streets and trips...older version....and maybe i can use that....i'll look at mapquest and harley.....but i really don't know what i'm doing...just like i downloaded this rt 66 program and then i go..."now what"....
-
i have a garmin 265wt...i loaded what is supposed to be a rt 66 map....all that shows up in the gps are POI's..for example ...n101..n stands for new mexico.....so, to make the gps follow rt 66...do i have to put every POI in as a "via" point...

is this disease spreading ?.......starting about last year, i began getting mileages of 33-36...where i use to get 38-42...i check my mileage after every fillup.ever since i've owned the bike......i just recently synched carbs, replaced plugs, all pipes are hot, checked every place i can think of for a vacumn leak...filled up a few days ago and mileage was 33...i have the tank mod so its easy for me to fill the tank to the same level........i really think that my smaller mileage drop is due to the ethanol...
-
just got back from my bike insp.........tech says 5/32 tread on the front....9/32 on the rear.....these are new e3's installed 300 miles ago.........no way, right ?....i got 13,000 + on the original 404's......

Anybody got stock pipes?
jlh3rd replied to Cottonpkr's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
cottonpkr i made a post in watering hole concerning loud pipes...check it out...maybe that idea might work for you... -
i've read lots of posts on here about buying expensive pipes , only to be disappointed with them being too loud...and now having to sell, trade ,swap, buy...and be disappointed again.....i did the same thing...with my roadhouse pipes but i found a $5 solution to the problem that might work for others here , if you have removable baffles...........i haven't seen it mentioned here.............aside from having the baffles wrapped.....buy two stainless steel scrub pads and put one in the front of the baffle....to keep the pad from being blown out...i used a vise to squeeze a section of the baffle down....i didn't insert the baffle horizontally in the vise, but as vertical as i could get it...and pretty much in the middle.....this might do the trick for you and save the $300 - $500 pipes you just bought.....worth a try anyway....

i have a 1975 honda 550f...the tank looks perfect when looking inside the filler neck....i installed a new nos petcock with filter last year and was surprised by all the crud and rust i found on the old one.....seems the water likes to collect at that low point and causes problems....so...pull your petcock and check it...
-
i second the dirty tank theory....

last year, about this time...we got up, jumped on the bike and headed south on 81 for the blueridge and natchez trace....i hadn't been on the bike in a while and was really feel'in good...1.5 hrs go by,runnin about 65 , and all this time i'm thinkin , wow how smooth this bike is, it's really running great....and realize....i'm in 4th gear, i never shifted to fifth.......so now i'm thinkin the gas mileage is gonna suck....well, it didn't...i got what i usually got..39-40.....i was surprised....

newventure i just purchased roadhouse pipes....i listened to sound bites on this web site and on you tube,...plus, many comments on different pipes on this site......which you need to do also....and these seemed to fit the bill of low rumble ,not loud.....well they do have a low rumble , but they were still too loud for me at cruise...i wasn't gonna waste $360........so... i squeezed the middle of the baffles down ....and stuffed a copper scrub pad in each one ..couldn't find stainless steel yet....it's a lot better...also...there is no chrome around one of the mounting tabs...the copper is showing...and i mention that because another post on here mentioned their pipes were showing rust........ good luck...

i have always filled the oil filters on my cars if they were mounted vertically....this brings oil pressure to the engine almost instantly..instead of waiting for it to fill.......horizontally mounted, i didn't ....

are you checking the level in the sight glass with the bike level ?....if you are and the glass is full, ...then you are overfilled.....i believe that would cause your problem...if on the side stand...that's a BIG overfill !

they replaced my handlebar controller ...and i still had a problem that developed late...greasing my connections solved my problem.....so, i guess it's hard to say which is causing the problem for you.....i would think they would start with the handle bar controller......

newventure slip-on pipe experiences are very subjective...if you google pipes on this site you will see many different opinions....my experience ..just last week i decided..after listening to videos from this site and you tube... to try roadhouse brand pipes...they seemed to have the lowest rumble ...but they proved to be too loud at cruise ( loud being another debateable topic)....now i've got $360 pipes i may not be able to use.....gonna try the stainless steel scrub pad stuff-in-pipe theory to tone 'em down.....most people swear by the harley pipes...but i couldn't find any videos to listen to....
