  1. I also just got the Carbs Overhauled and Snyced, Lifters set, new Fuel Filter, Plugs, Wires and Ends. Noise was still there. Mines got just short of 120,000 miles. Gas milage was up a little but when I checked it going 65 against a 25 mph head wind I only got 36 with it. I purchased the Shim Mod from Earl and will be trying that next. I've seen Four of these of the same color. This is my second one. I'd like to see a picture of your's also.
  2. Here's mine, the ones we made are much nicer.... like the ones Iowa Guy shows.
  3. Me and a buddy from the other site made several sets out of stainless steel, he might have one set left. PM me and I'll give you his phone number.
  4. My clutch has been Slipping and has the Noise. I pulled it apart last night and found that the Bearing #6003 was in perfect shape. The clutch basket (the outside one with the gear on it) has a Wobble. I'm sure that when the clutch is pulled in it puts pressure on that housing and elimanates much of the wobble and noise. So how much wobble is normal??????? Also I found two little balls that are aluminum, they are about the same size as them two marks that the plates are aligned to, about 1/32 diameter.... ????? they were setting on the fingers. I purchased all new steel and full friction plates along with the heavier spring from Skydoc but don't want to install them until I get an answer about the wobble.
  5. My 88 VR "wobbled" on those cement highways with the groves in it, it was really bad going over a gridded bridge; had a Venom on the front with over 20,000 miles on it but it had good tread and no cupping. I think the tire must have had a broked belt. I replaced it with a Dunlope 491 Elete II and "wobble" left.
  6. Several years ago when coming home from Trout fishing one night I was cruising along on my VR at 75 mph when I got passed by a Harley rider. He got so far a head that I couldn't see his tail lights. I pulled off the interstate about five miles later and at the top of the ramp sat the Harley at a Red light. He was back too far and didn't trip the thingy that changes the light. I pulled up in front of him at a angle and it tripped. Sure wished I could have seen his face. Anyway I've had lot of problems at that same light and finally figured it out..... if possible stop at a angle on those pads, works for me most of the time.
  7. My 88 also has the same problem and will be getting the fuel ratio test also. Would it be a good idea to have the Valve shims checked out first, considering it's never been done... I've got 116,000 on it. Can you really get the bolts out without breaking them? Also the "Knock" in my engine is much less when I pull in the clutch lever.
  8. For a while I thought I was back in the 80s with all those fast First Generation VRs setting around.
  9. I didn't even think about it at the time and then also, I have R6 calipers on it.
  10. Hey Eagleeye, Thanks for your hospitality, use of your tools and garage and...... and the food... WOW you sure know how to do it right... well except the Chemicals (Northwoods Syrup). Sure was nice to meet everyone and for yours helps on my bike. Only got a block away from your house and my right front brake pads started scrapping metal to metal (it was OK I just didn't use my hand brake) and then down the road about twenty miles the headlight warning light came on, after hitting the starter button several times the warning light went off and on, and then finally settled down. I got "USED" by two Crotch Rocket ding-a-lings just outside Houston MN. They were doing about 50, I passed them and then they came roaring past me on both sides, I was doing 65 and all I saw was a blue flash on the left followed by a yellow flash on the right. All I could think was stupid kids but then I remembered I did that krazy thing myself. Got home at 7:41 Tom
  11. I'm 66 and it's my 50th year of motorcycling. I've had two Salt Lake Silver/Gray 88 Standard Ventures. First one from 1991 to 1994, it had 1,600 miles when I bought it and sold it with 34,000 miles on it. The one I have now I bought six years ago with 48,500 on it and I now have 116,793 on it.
  12. I was wondering if it's possible to put a transmission from a Second Gen to be able to get the Overdrive.
  13. Here's what I've been observing with several tanks of gas, new plugs, new Diaphraigms with slides, carbs sync. 75-80 mph I get 30 mpg 70 " " " 33 " 65 " " " 35 " 60 " " " 38 " 55 " " " 41 " All flat country, very few hills, first three were on Interstates, the last two had lots of stopping in small towns. I'll be pulling a couple of plugs to see how they look. Pipes are still sooty on the ends and the old plugs were also sooty. When I've got my legs out on the Road Pegs I can smell Rich exhaust fuems. Here's a picture of my bike all loaded down with the "Mrs" on the back.
  14. Mine is Salt Lake Silver and Gray, and it's the second one I've had... both the same colors.
  15. The Synic job cured the problem, it revs to 7500 VERY quickly. Milage went from 31 mpg before diaphraigms & slides to 36 and then after synic up to 38. The noise.... not as bad as it was before synic but still there. Some of the guys think it's the lifters.... 112,000 miles on bike and they have never been touched. However some of the noise goes away when pulling in on the clutch lever.
  16. "Your the Man" Yup you pegged it, one of them had shifted and was leaking. I took the air cleaner off and saw that one slide wasn't moving. Now it revs out to 7500 again. It still takes longer than before but I'm sure the snyc job will fix it. Thank you VERY much!!!!
  17. Ya, our Salt Lake Silver/Gray ones do that at 7500 rpm. It's just today after the new Diaphragms that it doesn't rev. All four cyclinders are hot to the touch. The carbs were sync with lot's of holes in the diaphragms and now with no holes it just doesn't rev out. I just didn't think it would be that far off though.
  18. I installed new Diaphraigms with slides today, haven't got the carbs synic yet but took it for a ride and it would only rev out to 6500 rpm. Also put a K&N filter on. The engine noise has been getting kinda loud and the clutch slipped when trying to crank it out. When I pull the clutch lever in the sound goes away. Here's a picture of why I replaced the slides too. The chip was only on one but the others were worn quite bad.
  19. I have the right light pointed toward the ditch to spot Deer and the left side pointed up to attract cage drivers. I also mounted a blinking LED Brake light on the top of my trunk. After being hit by cars twice I want to be seen!!!!!
  20. I made my brackets from a part from a Printing Press, any hunk of sturdy steel will work though. I got the lights at Auto Zone for around $20.00 plus bucks
  21. What do you mean with "Total tear down"? Also what color is your 88 Standard?
  22. So what takes up the space on the other side of what you filled off?
  23. I had Venoms one my 88VR and they had cracks in the tread from day one. I went back to my dealer and he said that was normal, they also put the wrong size on the front. I had around 20,000 miles on them a they looked pretty good tread wise. BUT going over Steel deck bridges were a nightmare even when they only had a fer miles on them. Last year I was traveling with Yooper, going over the Mackinaw bridge the front end started shaking so bad that the handlebars bouncing from the extream left to right, as far as they could turn in each direction. There was construction on the blacktop so we were forced to go on the steel side. It was so bad that I told Yooper I wouldn't back across... we took the Ferry instead. I had a new front tire ordered (Dunlope Elete II) but it didn't arrive in time so we left anyway. Also before leaving I had a new Rear Dunlope put on. When we got back to Yoopers the front one was there. I have no problems now on them steel deck bridges.
  24. I've been camping on and off for 57 years in a lot of different tents, the cheap ones work pretty good if ya don't mind getting wet once in a while, but after seeing Eagleeye's Coleman Holligan 3, I had to have one. I love it, there's no chance of rain getting in. I bought it on-line from a place in MI. Prices ran from $157 to $69. Now if you want one or more of them under $30 tents you can have one of my old ones. Oh ya I always spray mine with waterproofing.
