    Supershow

Made it to the "International Motorcycle Supershow" here in Toronto today. Lots of people and interesting bikes. Here are just a few. The first is a 1901 model, complete with wood rims, a kerosene headlight and a luggage rack. Also saw this Slingshot.

    A story:

You have probably seen this before, I know I have. It is a story about the true meaning of Christmas. Not the Biblical story but, what the Biblical story teaches us. ------ A Christmas Story – by Rian B. Anderson Pa never had much compassion for the lazy or those who squandered their means and then never had enough for the necessities. But for those who were genuinely in need, his heart was as big as all outdoors. It was from him that I learned the greatest joy in life comes from giving, not from receiving. It was Christmas Eve 1881. I was fifteen years old and feeling like the world had caved in on me because there just hadn't been enough money to buy me the rifle that I'd wanted so bad that year for Christmas. We did the chores early that night for some reason. I just figured Pa wanted a little extra time so we could read in the Bible. So after supper was over I took my boots off and stretched out in front of the fireplace and waited for Pa to get down the old Bible. I was still feeling sorry for myself and, to be honest, I wasn't in much of a mood to read scriptures. But Pa didn't get the Bible, instead he bundled up and went outside. I couldn't figure it out because we had already done all the chores. I didn't worry about it long though, I was too busy wallowing in self-pity. Soon Pa came back in. It was a cold clear night out and there was ice in his beard. "Come on, Matt," he said. "Bundle up good, it's cold out tonight." I was really upset then. Not only wasn't I getting the rifle for Christmas, now Pa was dragging me out in the cold, and for no earthly reason that I could see. We'd already done all the chores, and I couldn't think of anything else that needed doing, especially not on a night like this. But I knew Pa was not very patient at one dragging one's feet when he'd told them to do something, so I got up and put my boots back on and got my cap, coat, and mittens. Ma gave me a mysterious smile as I opened the door to leave the house. Something was up, but I didn't know what. Outside, I became even more dismayed. There in front of the house was the work team, already hitched to the big sled. Whatever it was we were going to do wasn't going to be a short, quick, little job. I could tell. We never hitched up the big sled unless we were going to haul a big load. Pa was already up on the seat, reins in hand. I reluctantly climbed up beside him. The cold was already biting at me. I wasn't happy. When I was on, Pa pulled the sled around the house and stopped in front of the woodshed. He got off and I followed. "I think we'll put on the high sideboards," he said. "Here, help me." The high sideboards! It had been a bigger job than I wanted to do with just the low sideboards on, but whatever it was we were going to do would be a lot bigger with the high sideboards on. When we had exchanged the sideboards Pa went into the woodshed and came out with an armload of wood---the wood I'd spent all summer hauling down from the mountain, and then all fall sawing into blocks and splitting. What was he doing? Finally I said something. "Pa," I asked, "what are you doing?" “You been by the Widow Jensen's lately?" he asked. The Widow Jensen lived about two miles down the road. Her husband had died a year or so before and left her with three children, the oldest being eight. Sure, I'd been by, but so what? "Yeah," I said, "why?" "I rode by just today," Pa said. "Little Jakey was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. They're out of wood, Matt." That was all he said and then he turned and went back into the woodshed for another armload of wood. I followed him. We loaded the sled so high that I began to wonder if the horses would be able to pull it. Finally, Pa called a halt to our loading, then we went to the smoke house and Pa took down a big ham and a side of bacon. He handed them to me and told me to put them in the sled and wait. When he returned he was carrying a sack of flour over his right shoulder and a smaller sack of something in his left hand. "What's in the little sack?" I asked. "Shoes. They're out of shoes. Little Jakey just had gunny sacks wrapped around his feet when he was out in the wood-pile this morning. I got the children a little candy too. It just wouldn't be Christmas without a little candy." We rode the two miles to Widow Jensen's pretty much in silence. I tried to think through what Pa was doing. We didn't have much by worldly standards. Of course, we had a big wood pile, though most of what was left now was still in the form of logs that I would have to saw into blocks and split before we could use it. We also had meat and flour, so we could spare that, but I knew we didn't have any money, so why was Pa buying them shoes and candy? Really, why was he doing any of this? Widow Jensen had closer neighbors than us. It shouldn't have been our concern. We came in from the blind side of the Jensen house and unloaded the wood as quietly as possible, then we took the meat and flour and shoes to the door. We knocked. The door opened a crack and a timid voice said, "Who is it?" "Lucas Miles, Ma'am, and my son, Matt. Could we come in for a bit?" Widow Jensen opened the door and let us in. She had a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The children were wrapped in another and were sitting in front of the fireplace by a very small fire that hardly gave off any heat at all. Widow Jensen fumbled with a match and finally lit the lamp. "We brought you a few things, Ma'am," Pa said and set down the sack of flour. I put the meat on the table. Then Pa handed her the sack that had the shoes in it. She opened it hesitantly and took the shoes out one pair at a time. There was a pair for her and one for each of the children---sturdy shoes, the best, shoes that would last. I watched her carefully. She bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks. She looked up at Pa like she wanted to say something, but it wouldn't come out. "We brought a load of wood too, Ma'am," Pa said, then he turned to me and said, "Matt, go bring enough in to last for awhile. Let's get that fire up to size and heat this place up." I wasn't the same person when I went back out to bring in the wood. I had a big lump in my throat and, much as I hate to admit it, there were tears in my eyes too. In my mind I kept seeing those three kids huddled around the fireplace and their mother standing there with tears running down her cheeks and so much gratitude in her heart that she couldn't speak. My heart swelled within me and a joy filled my soul that I'd never known before. I had given at Christmas many times before, but never when it had made so much difference. I could see we were literally saving the lives of these people. I soon had the fire blazing and everyone's spirits soared. The kids started giggling when Pa handed them each a piece of candy and Widow Jensen looked on with a smile that probably hadn't crossed her face for a long time. She finally turned to us. "God bless you," she said. "I know the Lord himself has sent you. The children and I have been praying that he would send one of his angels to spare us." In spite of myself, the lump returned to my throat and the tears welled up in my eyes again. I'd never thought of Pa in those exact terms before, but after Widow Jensen mentioned it I could see that it was probably true. I was sure that a better man than Pa had never walked the earth. I started remembering all the times he had gone out of his way for Ma and me, and many others. The list seemed endless as I thought on it. Pa insisted that everyone try on the shoes before we left. I was amazed when they all fit and I wondered how he had known what sizes to get. Then I guessed that if he was on an errand for the Lord that the Lord would make sure he got the right sizes. Tears were running down Widow Jensen's face again when we stood up to leave. Pa took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug. They clung to him and didn't want us to go. I could see that they missed their pa, and I was glad that I still had mine. At the door Pa turned to Widow Jensen and said, "The Mrs. wanted me to invite you and the children over for Christmas dinner tomorrow. The turkey will be more than the three of us can eat, and a man can get cantankerous if he has to eat turkey for too many meals. We'll be by to get you about eleven. It'll be nice to have some little ones around again. Matt, here, hasn't been little for quite a spell." I was the youngest. My two older brothers and two older sisters were all married and had moved away. Widow Jensen nodded and said, "Thank you, Brother Miles. I don't have to say, "'May the Lord bless you,' I know for certain that He will." Out on the sled I felt a warmth that came from deep within and I didn't even notice the cold. When we had gone a ways, Pa turned to me and said, "Matt, I want you to know something. Your ma and me have been tucking a little money away here and there all year so we could buy that rifle for you, but we didn't have quite enough. Then yesterday a man who owed me a little money from years back came by to make things square. Your ma and me were real excited, thinking that now we could get you that rifle, and I started into town this morning to do just that. But on the way I saw little Jakey out scratching in the woodpile with his feet wrapped in those gunny sacks and I knew what I had to do. So, Son, I spent the money for shoes and a little candy for those children. I hope you understand." I understood, and my eyes became wet with tears again. I understood very well, and I was so glad Pa had done it. Just then the rifle seemed very low on my list of priorities. Pa had given me a lot more. He had given me the look on Widow Jensen's face and the radiant smiles of her three children. For the rest of my life, whenever I saw any of the Jensens, or split a block of wood, I remembered, and remembering brought back that same joy I felt riding home beside Pa that night. Pa had given me much more than a rifle that night, he had given me the best Christmas of my life.
  3. Went to an auction a while ago, bought me a box lot, but don't have any idea what I bought,, normal for me, but I'm kind of noisy,,, what do I have here, must be something to do with wood working I think,,, and no I'm not going to start wood working.
  4. I have an older Ryobi table saw that the top has a bunch of grooves on it. I prefer to have a flat smooth surface to easily glide the wood. Sometimes as it is the wood seems to stick to the surface. Any suggestions to make the top into a smooth surface?
  5. *announcement......If you go to page two of "delay in getting trike" thread- you will see that the "why" thread is now "WOOD" and all variations on that theme.........end of announcement:crackup:
  6. As you all know my father has been in the hospital for just over three months. Today at 2:30 pm my father quietly passed away. His body just seemed to decide it had enough and shut down. I never thought I would suddenly feel such a huge emptyness as I did when he slipped away. My Father has been a big part of my life and I know everytime I swing a carpenters hammer to drive a nail or saw a piece of wood I am going to feel his absence, because everything I learned about building houses I learned from him. His favourite phrases were always 1- a job worth doing is worth doing right. and 2-never trust another mans tape measure.
  7. I have a crazy desire to purchase a Vintage Travel Trailer... like from pre 1960 or so. I have seen some pretty reasonable and some not so resonable. I was wondring if any one on here has any leads to one. Hummingbird has turned me on to the trail of one in or near Ohio. I just love the look of those old trailers and the beatiful wood work in them. Let me know if you have a lead on something in your neck of the woods. Thanks Much! Steve aka Bubber
  8. I have the Wood Grain accent on my Speaker Covers, and the Clear coat is coming apart from the wood grain My plan is to remove them ....But what is the best way to remove them..without damaging the speaker covers .
  9. Oh and in case ya didn't know what it was here's a link. I have plenty of wood in the yard, took down 5 trees this past month. http://www.bonfirenight.net/ Margaret
  10. Just wondering if anyone has a good story to tell about using the VR assistance list. Other than looking for a phone number I've never really used it (knock on wood) for a break down or anything. Sure glad to have it available thought.
  11. I found a major source of frame and bar buzz on my bike which turned out to be the passenger floorboards. When the boards are in the upright stowed position, you can move them side to side freely before hitting the spring stops.. "loose" is quite accurate. I jammed some soft wood between the mounts and the pivot end of the floorboards to seize them up while in the upright position and yep.. what a huge difference. I took one apart to confirm that yes, the ball and spring were present and reassembled it but its very loose.. Is there a more permanent / proper way to tighten these up other than jamming a stick of wood like i have? You can't see the wood, I seldom ride with passengers.. but would like to sort this out somehow.. Anyone else experience something similar?
  12. I was working on when I somehow lost concentration and darn near lost my thumb. I finally finished construction today, decided not to finish it - it a lot easier to stain, seal and finish before putting the pieces together. It's all poplar wood, even the side and back panels. I re-saw 3/4" boards up to 8" wide to make the panels. I definitely NOT a fan of fiber board -
  13. Many years ago I refinished old/collectable furniture but it's almost impossible to find someone to strip the old finishes off anymore because of the toxic waste. 10 years or so ago I started building rustic furniture for resale and have continued because I enjoy creating different pieces. I also have a habit of waking up at 3 or 4 in the morning so I go out to the shop and make some saw dust. Attached is the piece I finished this morning, all poplar wood with the exception of a couple resawn oak panels in the doors. It's a 2 piece unit so I can handle it by myself.
  14. i got a jolt of electricity that woke me up and put me in a stupor at the same time. late this afternoon after i called it quits, i was getting ready to turn some wood on the lathe. i reached from the left instead of the right to grab a tool handle i had a bit for. un-be-knownst to me, a light cord that draped near it had a mouse bite of plastic missing. the left arm rested on the lathe as the handle was in the right hand, with the ferrule rising up to meet that one little spot of missing plastic wire coating. the juice traveled from arm to arm crossing my chest to the lathe's ground. I almost made fudge after the 2 seconds of working for the electric company. i was lucky i was not holding on to anything, i was pushed back away from the bench. i don't know if my heart was affected, but seems as not. i cut the offending section of wire out after inspecting & finding about 5 inches of suspect wire and repaired the cable. man, what we take for granted. i waited until i got my wits back before i put tool to wood.
  15. This camper is for sale around the corner from me. We set it up halfa** so you could see it. He said it was a timeout, but I don't think it is. He doe's not know what yr. it is but has a video about it and the set up instructions. The first time I looked at it he said to make him an offer. This time he said $700.00. It does need some TLC but seems to be in good shape. There is a small hole in both door flaps that could be easily fixed. All the zippers are in good shape as well as the netting. He said it doesn't leak, but don't know when he used it last, the canvas looks and feels good, doesn't seem to be rotten or anything. Under the wood floor is storage and you can put a pole in the wood to use it as a table inside the camper. You use an air mattress to sleep on. If anyone is interested I have his phone numbers. http://s608.photobucket.com/albums/tt166/ventureroyale/camper/ Camper sold ---- to Tupperj

  17. I took off work early yesterday, “no work” and went home and started a fire in the wood stove in the garage. I called my son and nephew over to see if they wanted to hang out while I worked on my bike. We took apart the swing arm on the 2001 Suzuki DRZ 400. It only has 3800 miles on it but I bought it used last year and thought I had better check it out. It needed to be greased but was not’t real bad yet. It had been raining out most of the day and on the cool side. The wood stove warmed the garage up real nice and it wasn't long we were in tee shirts. My son brought over his 13 week old Labradoodle pup. He has only had it for three days. Cute pup, very mellow. I went in the house and got a cast iron skillet and some Venison steaks out of the freezer. Put some butter in the pan and set it on top of the wood stove. It was not’t long and the aroma was starting to smell very good. We enjoyed each others company for another hour or so just setting around the wood stove and enjoying some Venison. The time was good. We need more of it. Just sharing a good time that didn't cost anything.
  18. Lowes just put there wood stoves on sale 50% off. I just bought a 1800 sq ft model for the camp. Now I can camp all year round.A man has to have a get a way dog house. Some day it will end up in a log cabin or a big first gen garage. We got 7 inches of snow yesterday,Ice last night, and a flood today. My yard is a mess, vehicles on the other side of the creek and were walking out of here. Now if I can get up that icy bank on the other side of my foot bridge. I got to get MamaMo at midnight from work.
  19. Will be taking a trip this May. This will be my first long haul trip on my Venture. Will be traveling from OK to GA, then from GA to FL (all solo). After that distance I will be meeting my family and would like to trailer my bike back. My question is are the type of trailers that Lowes have any good for carring large bikes like the Venture? They have both the open mesh floor type and the open wood floor type. What size would be needed for the Venture and which would be prefered (open mesh or wood floor)? I also will plan on getting a wheel chock for the front tire. The trailer will be pulled by a V6 Dodge Van (automatic). As you can see by my map, I need to color in some states!!!!!!! Dennis
  20. Hello all, Sorry it's been awhile since I've checked in. Between the Weather out here [WA] and the Holidays in general...well, I've been just down right busy. anyway, here's my winter project for Trigger. I was able to pick up the Harley batwing fairing off of ebay. it did come with some nice mounts, but unfortunately and evidently, the Heritage and the RS forks are not quite set up the same...so I went about creating my own. I started off by making a cardboard template, which i then transfered to wood. This worked out pretty good actually, the 1/4" plywood is soft enough and easy enough to work with, yet strong enough to hold the fairing. Once i got the wood templates aligned to my liking, i then used them, to create the soon to be perminate mounts out of aluminum angle iron. The harder part is going to be in the finializing of the lower fairing mounts. I was able to bend up a couple of pieces of scrap aluminum flat bar...but it's just not all that pretty. Which brings me to the latter steps of "paint". All black or two tone to match Trigger's current color scheme. As always any thought and suggests would be greatly appreciated. OH...one more thing. [As i climb onto my soap box] This is absolutely, the best place for "free" help and information in regards to our two wheeled loved ones. Please consider making a small donation to this site. I know it's appreciated by those that run it and those of us that use it. Thx Ron. and now for the pix.... http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-001sm.jpghttp://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-002sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-013sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-020sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081121-022sm.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081130-Front.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081130-Mount.jpg http://home.centurytel.net/malizia/RS/BatWingPics/20081204-Left.jpg
  21. I'm looking for a cheap wood burner for the camp. I'm accumulating more fire wood from fallen trees and limbs then we can use in the fire pit. The old house is only 800 sq ft and I'll only heat it when camping on occasional weekends. Got hunting season coming up through December and I like to start spring work projects in March so being able to camp during chilly months is nice. I'm looking at the vogelzang frontiersman that tractor supply sales for $399. It comes with a 110 volt blower and 102,000 btu adequate for 1000 sq ft. I'm not sold on this stove. It's just available close and within budget. Last year there was a run on stoves due to heating cost increases. I can only imagine what this year will be like with fuel cost rising. Next weekend I'm putting a new floor down in the old kitchen and then I'll be ready for a stove. The old kitchen had a wood burning cook stove years ago and thats where this one will go.The master bedroom is next to the kitchen so I could curtain off the living room and spare bedroom to reduce necessary heating space. I got a wheelchair ramp right to the front kitchen door. Makes for rolling a first gen in easy. An other ideas on stoves?
  22. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,401821,00.html HANNIBAL, Mo. — A 45-year-old Missouri biker was reportedly killed by two other men when he tried to stop them from attacking a woman by the side of the road. Rodney Wood was riding his motorcycle when he saw a woman being attacked, a family friend told the Hannibal Courier-Post. He pulled over to try to help, the paper reported. But when Wood tried to intervene, the unidentified attackers apparently turned on him and killed him, according to the Courier-Post. Wood's body was found early Sunday morning in Hannibal, Mo. The suspects, who are 21 and 22, were arrested Sunday. Police have released few other details about the incident.
  23. Got the pipes on everyone, and love the sound(Roadhouse Pipes - slash cut). Loud enough but not to loud. Very good rumble. Installation OK, just did not care for the wood block and hammer persuasion I had to use. But still worked out good. Have to kinda wiggle them as you go and take a wood block and drive them on a little ways at a time (wood block against the muffler hanger ). Then bolt up and tighten clamp. I also used some high heat silicone on pipe /muffler connection. I then unplugged the AIS and installed K&N filters. Purrs like a lion. I like the Roadhouse, good chrome to the end of slash cut pipes. I did not go with Bubs because I did not like the polished aluminum ends, I like the slash cut. Fuzzy
  24. This is an MP3 player mount I threw together last weekend. It turned out pretty good I made it from some scrap aluminum I had in the garage and formed it around some wood blocks I cut to the size I wanted the tray to be. I made another form from wood to make the bar clamp, it only took a couple of hours to make.
  25. When second gos out, about how many miles are on the odometer? I've got 38,000 on mine and second seems to be still going strong(knock on wood). I wanted to go through and fix it before it goes out over this winter.
