Just got back from Mexico. Before I left I posted info about a flyer I got with my airline ticket about not taking U.S. cash to Mexico. I now have more information. Please do not shoot the messenger. I am just passing on the info I was given. When we arrived at the hotel they informed us that the Mexican government is very concerned about the amount of U.S. cash in Mexico. Between tourism and drugs it has affected the value of the Peso. The Mexican government is PROPOSING to order banks not to accept American cash. This will not affect credit or debit cards but businesses will no longer take U.S. cash. This will do two things...1. strengthen the Peso and 2. All those drug lords with untold millions in American cash will be stuck with worthless paper. Another thing they PROPOSE to do is tighten up their border to cut down on all the guns being smuggled into Mexico from the U.S. I do not know if they will actually do these things. While we were there the business owners told us that tourism has changed a lot there. Only 3% of the tourists are now from the U.S. while 46% are from Canada with the rest being from Europe. They will still accept Canadian cash.

Even to the description of the Unmarked cars used for layering and ticketing in all states. Click on what ever state you want and then It will show the city or towns, click on which one you want to view. You can see them in the cities in the U.S. &/or Canada. Very interesting. I had no idea this was available to everyone. Do you know the speed-traps in your hometown? Click on the link below Http://www.speedtrap.org/

Last month out riding. A rider ask me if I had ever seen the grave in the middle of the road. It is 5 or 5 1/2 miles south of Franklin Indiana east of U.S. 31 on 400S. So I had to get out today so I rode out to see it.

Tried out the new to me Tour Deluxe this weekend and took my lovely wife up to the top of the peak foliage world (which is the Balsam overlook on the BRP in these parts at this time of year) 350 mile day, perfect weather and my best girl finally able to see some of the stuff that I have only seen without her. The Route: From just outside Atlanta, U.S. 23 (I-985) north to just outside Sylva N.C. picked up the BRP and went out to the Inn at Mt. Pisgah then backtracked back to US 276 to Brevard, NC (Great road!) then U.S. 64 from Brevard to Highlands, N.C. finally N.C 106 (Dillard Road) back to U.S. 23 and home. She took several hundred pictures, here are some of the ones I liked best. Especially the little dog tied to the Goldwing. http://s275.photobucket.com/albums/jj302/ThomWill/BRP%20Run%20Oct%202010/

I still get a monthly sailing news ezine that let me know what's going on in my other lifetime. They just posted this story. I thought it was noteworthy considering the present situation here in the US. Please don't let this thread spin off into anything political. It's just to show there's another side out there and worth a little conversation. Health and Dental Care While Cruising September 20, 2010 – Central America How to pay for health care is a huge concern for everyone, cruisers included. There is some good news, however. Once you leave the United States, health care costs plummet. Secondly, in places like Mexico, there are very low cost health insurance options. When Terry and Jonesy Morris of the Chula Vista-based Gulfstar Sailmaster 50 Niki Wiki decided to quit their jobs, sell their house, furniture and car, and get rid of everything else in order to start living, they couldn't afford health care because of a series of pre-existing conditions. Faced with the choice of either going to work for a big company so they could get on a group policy and not being able to cruise, or self-insuring so they could "go out and live," they decided on the latter. They've been having a great time cruising Mexico and Central America in the four years since they did the '06 Ha-Ha, but then Terry needed to have emergency laparoscopic surgery to remove her gall bladder while they were spending the summer up the Rio Dulce. Here's her concise report: "The total cost was $5,000 U.S. That included three nights and four days in the upscale and modern university hospital in Guatemala City. This cost included the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and primary care doctor fees, as well as all tests, medications, and follow-up care. It was one of my best hospital experiences, and I’ve had six other surgeries, all of them in the United States." Cruisers in Mexico find the quality of medical care south of the border to be just as good, if not better, than in the U.S., and the costs substantially lower. © 2010 Henry Kaiser In case anybody thinks all health care outside of the United States is substandard, let's repeat her last sentence: "It was one of my best hospital experiences, and I’ve had six other surgeries, all of them in the United States." "So far, we have been quite happy with the medical and dental services we've received," continues Terry. "Jonesy, my husband, had an urgent and extensive root canal and crown procedure in El Salvador. It was done by an endodontist who was trained in the States. The total cost for the two dentists, plus the crown, was $350. In addition, we have had routine dental cleanings and check-ups for between $25 to $40, and filling repairs for $25 — all by English-speaking dentists. A walk-in, same-day mammogram at a private hospital was $35, with the typed radiologist report and films available for pick-up the next day. Routine blood-work is done inexpensively on demand at laboratories." To add a little perspective on the situation, a Sausalito sailor we know had the same surgery a couple years ago at Marin General. The total amount billed to the insurance company? $80,000! And that didn't include any overnight stays — he was forced to check out six hours after the surgery — or follow-up care. Let's see, there are no signs that the U.S. job market is going to improve anytime soon, used sailboats are selling for all-time low prices, the cost of pleasure cruising south of the border is well under what's considered poverty level in the United States, and health insurance and health care south of the U.S. is both good and reasonable. For some people, deciding to opt out of what for too many has become the 'new normal' in the United States in search of a better quality of life might not be such a bad idea.

We currently have the series "Pacific" on over here and it made me realise once more how lucky we are on this big island that while our boys were away fighting the germans in Europe, U.S. forces "had our back" fighting the japs on Guadalcanal and other places. If they had got to our resources, and cut supply lines for the U.S. fleet.....I would have lived ??? a whole different life! So, from one very grateful aussie....thank you to your fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and any who served. :clap2:

Digital tach group buy is now closed. Tachs have been shipped to members that ordered them on Monday, February 8, 2010. Gary ================================================================ I received the digital tach today that I had ordered from an ebay vendor. He sells these tachs in an auction style format and they vary widely in price. Prices for the last 6 on Ebay incl. First Class shipping were $21.19, $19.19, $17.69, $19.19, $34.69, $20.00 These tachs would be very useful when doing carb synching and adjusting the pilot air screws. He will sell me a bulk order of 20 or more for a fixed cost of $14.50 including shipping to me. The tach is 2" x 1 3/4" x 3/4" Mounting tab holes are 2 1/2" apart, 2 7/8" wide at tabs. Display digits are 3/8" tall. Over cable length is 66". There is about 12" of dual lead cable. One for spark plug sensor & one for ground. The tach can be set to read RPM's once every revolution, once every other revolution or twice per revolution. RPM display updates every second. Readout is to 99,999. First picture below shows how I received unit out of package. Last picture shows tach attached to my Dodge Ram. Bike is not even close to running at this point. Also tried on lawn mower and it worked great. All you have to do is coil black lead at end of cable around spark plug wire two or three times. It doesn't even have to be grounded to read RPM's. Prices below include shipping costs. (Qty 1) First class for 17.50 to U.S. (Qty 2) First class for 32.50 to U.S. (Qty 1) 2-3 day priority for 20.00 to U.S. (Qty 2) 2-3 day priority for 34.50 to U.S. (Qty 1) First class for 18.50 to Canada. (Qty 2) First class for 33.50 to Canada. (Qty 1) 6-10 day priority for 26.00 to Canada. (Qty 2) 6-10 day priority for 40.50 to Canada. I can get two units in first class mailer and 4 units in small priority box. I would recommend priority mailing. The packaging will be better, I can use USPS supplied box. And it is much quicker and I can get a USPS tracking number. I have recently seen first class mail take almost two weeks transit time. U.S. shipping is to lower 48 states. If you want one or more of these please respond to this thread, or you can PM me. As I have posted before I purchased Ed-sets and Mic-mutes for the Quike. I then found no CB on my bike:doh: After emailing Bill Morphy at Ed-sets, he suggested a company where I could purchase CB PTT buttons and still be able to use his Mic-mutes. A member on here, Steve Neal contacted AirRider.com and gave me direct email contact with a Mr Tracy Rogers. I was unable to buy online as their system would not allow me to fill in shipping for Australia. Well, he spoke to their administrator -- and they changed the whole system to allow me to order on line So just wanted to let you know about a good U.S. company :clap2:

Hey BommerCPO The U.S. Navy is in town!!!! Party time in Fremantle :dancefool: The USS George Washington is out in Gage Roads, and she's a Big 'Un Her escort is the USS Cowpen. I've never seen such a humungous ship !! Do you know that my first ever pen-pals in my teen years were two U.S. navy guys. Took them home and mum fed them well, and they enjoyed "home hospitality" for a while. Still have their letters stored somewhere, and a deck of cards we used to use( is in the cupboard.) One of them(Jim Leahy) even came back for a visit when he got out of the Navy! Back then the officers and sailors used to enjoy going to a family home for a few days, instead of night clubs, getting drunk and you know- what- else. Whenever a ship was in town, the Aussie navy would do an announcment on the radio, for people to attend the dance get-together in Fremantle to meet the U.S. guys. I've even had lunch in the mess with everyone, and got lost going to the head !!

I talked to my Son tonight, He's heading out to boot camp:pushups: in San Diego Ca. on May 4. I'm so proud of him yet I'm scared as well - being a Father. He said he wanted to go in the Marines. So I gave him my full support:happy34:. He was kinda shock that I backed him on his decision. Told him I wanted to go in when I was 18 but my football days ruin that idea - knees. So now my Son is going to serve our Country. Sorry this is not about motorcycles, Just wanted to tell everyone how proud I am of my Son...... Buddy Father of a U.S. Marine

Yamaha Motor Cuts Profit Forecast on Weak U.S. July 31 (Bloomberg) -- Yamaha Motor Co., the world's second-largest motorcycle maker, reduced its fiscal full-year net income forecast 23 percent because of falling demand in the U.S. for large motorcycles. The shares dropped the most in more than five months. The company cut its forecast to 45 billion yen ($416.8 million) from an earlier prediction of 59 billion yen, it said in a statement today. Sales will be 1.72 trillion yen, 6 percent lower than the initial forecast. Yamaha expects its first decline in operating profit in eight years after U.S. sales of Royal Star Venture and Roadliner motorcycles dropped 22 percent in the first half. Record gasoline prices and the lowest consumer confidence in 16 years has eroded U.S. demand for the $17,000 bikes. ``Yamaha is taking a severe hit from the economic downturn in the U.S.,'' said Koji Endo, a senior analyst at Credit Suisse Group in Tokyo, who rates the company ``neutral''. ``Demand for big touring motorcycles and boats is drying up.'' Net income in the second quarter plunged 85 percent to 3.6 billion yen, according to Bloomberg calculations. Sales dropped 4.2 percent in the period. Yamaha fell as much as 9.7 percent to 1,761 yen as of 12:30 p.m. on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The shares have fallen 34 percent so far this year compared with a 13 percent drop in the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average. Motorcycle Sales Motorcycle sales in Japan dropped 23 percent in the first half. In Europe, sales fell 12 percent. In Asia, excluding Japan, sales gained 27 percent. That failed to boost earnings as the smaller bikes the company sells in Indonesia and Vietnam have lower profit margins. The company said it will cut full-year domestic motorcycle production 20 percent compared with a year earlier in response to the slow-down. ``There's no end in sight to the severe conditions,'' said Kozo Shinozaki, the company's general manager of finance and accounting. Earnings also fell because of a stronger yen against the dollar and the euro. The stronger currency cut 15 billion yen in operating profit in the first half.
