  1. Whoever installed the passing lights on my '99 RSV tied them in to the yellow (High beam) wire right at the headlight. I have cured that by installing a relay which is turned on and off by the R/Y wire for the headlight. What I'm also wanting to do is add a second relay for the headlight. This way none of the lighting load is going through the ignition switch. This would also enable me to put an "emergency lighting" switch in the circuit which would allow the headlight to work, completely independent from the bike's circuits. My question here is what color wire runs to the dimmer switch? In the circuit pictured, there should be a red wire with a yellow tracer. I found the R/Y wire which powers the headlight, but it goes into a plug only to come out the other side as a solid blue wire. I want to find and cut into the wire where the arrow points. once I cut it I would attach the top cut to the output (terminal 87) of the relay and the wire on the bottom of the cut would then hook to the terminal 85 or 86 on the relay. So, where in the real world harness do I make this cut?
  2. So I get the new bike home Tuesday night. The wife and I take about a 5 mile ride to check it out. Pull up in the driveway, and notice one of the rear speakers aren't working.. BRAND NEW.. come on now... SO, I call the dealer the next morning, and of course, depends on how busy we are if we can get to it right away or not... UM... I just spent how much for what?!?!?! Got home last night and decided I'll look at it myself.. Pull the seats, and yep, sure enough, plain as day is a a connector with nothing plugged into it... I start looking around for the other end. It's up under the trunk, with the wire running between the trunk and the trunk bracket. You could tell exactly what happened... They put it together, couldn't get the connector pushed back through from between the bracket and the trunk, so said WTF.. it's only one speaker.. I ended up pulling the speaker pod loose, and it gave enough clearance to force the connector through... I also noticed that one of the connectors for one of the antennas wasn't routed correctly and placed in the holder for it.. and another wire laying loose that should have been run through a wire keeper.. SO.. I sorted it all out, put it all back together, and now I got sound all the way around, and no worries of wires rubbing from being in wrong places.. It sure makes me wonder what other problems I'm going to find from the dealer assembly though... If they do something like this with a brand new bike, I'll be damned if I'm going to trust my life to others when you have no ideas if they take shortcuts or not.. At least when I work on it, I know what was done.
  3. daviddebbybianchi@yahoo.comI have a 2008 RSV and have had many radio/cb/tape deck/ intercom problems from the day I bought it new a year ago. The dealer has been very understanding and has tried everything Yamaha has allowed them to do' The problems are these, Enging ignition noise (spark plug noise) in the intercom, the tape deck shorted out, the cb is now give a CB/ERR message on the display when it is turned on. So far the cb has been replaced, the controller replaced(3 time over the year) the wire harness from the controller to the cb was replaced and still the problem has not been repaired.I think the problem could be in the main wire harness for the bike. Has anyone had this problem and if so what was done to correct it.
  4. I need an antenna wire (stock). I'll buy it or trade something off my 83 parts bike (bad body)
  5. I am near completion on the RSV wiring schematic. I have a number of questions about it that I am unable to check since I do not have A RSV. What I need is someone that can look at a wiring harness on or off of bike and check these. They are listed below. If it would help I could email anyone interested in helping a copy of schematic. I would like to get as many of these questions resolved prior to posting finished version. There may be a prize for most needed answers #1 Rear speakers only show 2 wires, if stereo rear speakers should be 4 Answered by YamaHamer 10/23/09 #2 two of six wires from MCU to front radio remote go thru connector D, why just 2 #3 Is carb heart ground shown correct or do grounds all connect to Carb ground connector. #4 Wire colors into fan noise filter conflict between what connectors indicate & indicated wire color. #5 Rear Aux outlet positive wire color to fuse, Br/R or Br/B, wire has each on opposite ends #6 Is Y/W wire color correct in rear brake switch, incoming cable shows Y/L #7 Color of wire inside handle bar control from Cruise Control Switch to Hazard Switch, not marked on schematic #8 Is Y/B wire correct color in clutch switch, incoming cable shows Y/W Answered by BuddyRich 10/23/09 #9 Is W wire correct color in PTT switch, incoming cable shows W/L #10 PTT circuit problem….Harness connector legend does not show a W or a W/L wire going thru it, PTT circuit is indicated as going thru this connector though. MCU diagram indicates it is W/Y at connector but on other ends, indicates W/L at MCU and at push button it shows being a W, on cable going into push button it is W/L. Only one wire on schematic is W/Y, from MCU to Front Control & this does not indicate going thru D connector #11 Is L/B wire correct color in dimmer switch, incoming cable shows R/Y #12 Wire connector E, can’t locate Br/W terminal, only logical place is in wire from flasher relay to turn signal switch #13 Wire connector D, can’t locate Y/R terminal, only Y/R at 2 places 1st out of cruise control relay, 2nd from flasher relay to turn signal switch. .
  6. I've had a problem with my 86 VR where the signal lights were turning off way too quickly (sometimes after two or three blinks). One of my buddies helped me look at it a few weeks ago and we found out it was losing ground and cutting off before it was supposed to. After pricing replacement switches for a few weeks I decided to try something today. I ran a wire from the ground side of the fuse box through the cable channel in the left handle bar and into the switch. There is a metal plate inside the switch just behind the control. I played around with my wire to find where the plate needed the ground and soldered the wire in place. I have to manually turn my signal light off now after I make a turn, but I feel a whole lot safer now that I don't have to worry about it turning off at the wrong time. Not a hard fix if I could do it. Thought someone else may be having the same problem.
  7. I bought a set of Harley license lights to put on my 2006 RSV. The wiring diagram that obber sent me shows the wires on the Harley part being red or blue. The light I purchased has only one color wire on it and I am a little confused on how to wire it up to my RSV. Any of you have any suggestions? Thanks.
  8. i got a jolt of electricity that woke me up and put me in a stupor at the same time. late this afternoon after i called it quits, i was getting ready to turn some wood on the lathe. i reached from the left instead of the right to grab a tool handle i had a bit for. un-be-knownst to me, a light cord that draped near it had a mouse bite of plastic missing. the left arm rested on the lathe as the handle was in the right hand, with the ferrule rising up to meet that one little spot of missing plastic wire coating. the juice traveled from arm to arm crossing my chest to the lathe's ground. I almost made fudge after the 2 seconds of working for the electric company. i was lucky i was not holding on to anything, i was pushed back away from the bench. i don't know if my heart was affected, but seems as not. i cut the offending section of wire out after inspecting & finding about 5 inches of suspect wire and repaired the cable. man, what we take for granted. i waited until i got my wits back before i put tool to wood.
  9. Is it possible to run a wire to the front under the gas tank without takiing it off? I will need to run four wires two - and two +. One set for the gps and the other for a radio caddy.
  10. Just when I figured out one problem I get another. I recently put the Plug and Play LED turn signals and tail light in my 99. Found out that the board or wire in the tail light was shorting out when I tightened down the bottom screw of the lens. Fix that and all seemed well. Got back yesterday from a ride to Vermont and still all is good. Put the bike away after a good cleaning, then this morning I get a call from the wife and she said the my passing lamps are on. They were not on when I went to bed last night. They're wire to a relay to the ignition switch and no other lights are affected (on). I will start tracing wires when I get home but am looking for a little advice what could cause it. Had one thought...Can a relay fail in the closed position?? Thanks. Bill
  11. K just searched tech section on electrical shorts and says read only- guess I need to ask here. Went to start bike after sitting for 2 weeks and I got nothin, no lights - no power of any kind and no radio. I saw in tech support about the ignition and wire connection burning up and shorting out so I pulled tank off and checked it. Looks fine, also noticed that all that had a ignition problem that their radio still worked. So am wondering if anyone has any ideas before I start removing ignition- Ive looked around for any obvious melted wire connections and no luck so far. gonna do a more thurall search before changing the ignition tho. And yes the battery is fully charged hehe Thanx for any help or ideas
  12. Went for one of those rides this afternoon, the one where you are making a run to the store and then you are 20 miles from home on a back road. Well, as I came to a stop on a hill at a stop sign, the bike died instantly and all lights go off. I turn the switch off and back on and had nothing. I coast the bike back to a level place away from the intersection and pull the top cover. I used my ohm/volt meter and the battery was good, so I checked across the main fuse and got no voltage. I pulled the fuse apart and it was blown bigtime. I used a #16 jumper wire across the fuse and turned the switch back on and everything powered up. I figured if it was still a dead short to ground, the #16 wire would give me a second to check it and would act like a fuse. Since that seemed to work ok, I took the fuse apart and stuck the eyelet terminal into the slot on the wire from the battery and it fit snug. I again started the bike and everything worked ok. Since it was looking like rain and everything was working, I decided to strap the cover to the trunk and take off toward home as it would be real easy to pull the wire apart if something happened.. The bike ran perfect all the way home. So, now the bike is sitting out in the garage with the terminal pulled apart and I have no idea what caused the fuse to blow. The two screws that hold the fuse in place were tight, so that was not the problem. I guess I will have to pull fairings and see if I can find a ground point and I also will need another fuse. Anyone got a suggestion on where to get a fuse, I think it is a 40 amp? RandyA
  13. I have a new 08 Venture and I,m locating some extras like arm rest passenger pegs trailer hitch... But is there asit Ican get a wire harness for pluging a trailer into RonaldE:Venture:
  14. I tore down the front shocks on my 87 Standard to replace the leaking fork seals. I had a heck of a time trying to get the wire retainer ring back in place. (just beneath the dust seal)...It seemed that I couldn't get either the top bushing or the seal to seat down far enough to leave room for the retainer wire. I pulled it apart again ( a few times ) to figure why they wouldn't seat far enough, until I got smart and compared the new seal to the old one, and found that the Pyramid brand seal was about 1/16" taller than the old one, which was just enough to keep the retainer wire from going in. I got another set from Bikebandit, which matched the originals perfectly, and the darn thing went right together. I got the Pyramid (green package) from e-bay. They looked good, but the little bit of added height was a killer. Hope this helps someone avoid the cornfusion I went through.
  15. I purchased the Baron's mini-bullet tach (BA-7573-00) with brake resivoir mount kit a couple weeks ago. This model has white LED backlighting only. The instructions were universal and pretty much pertained to HD intall. After e-mailing John and getting pertinant instructions (not found in the supplied paper work) I was on my way. There is a tech article here in VR on the installation, BUT there are a couple changes! The blue wire from the sigle fire ignition adaptor runs all the way to the rear coil's (either one) negative side. The black wire from the tach cannot be grounded to the coil bolt but another frame ground. After installation, the LED back light flickered randomly and the tach needle would fluctuate randomly. There seemed no correlation between the two. I regrounded the tach wire but no improvement. My next step will be to remove the red (tach power) and yellow (LED power) tach wires from the positive terminal of the front coil and connect to a switched 12V source. John's only other suggestion, if this failed, is to install a resistor. Any of you weekend mechanics or better yet a seasoned mechanic have any ideas? Within the last month I had a complete tune-up including carb sync.
  16. can you guys help? what is the difference in a wire labled Y/R on the wiring diagram and R/Y? is one color continuous and the other striped? if so, what is what.
  17. OK guys need some help here, I got my Stebel Air Horn during the week from http://www.twistedthrottle.com and I got the plug and play wiring kit to go with it figuring to make it eaiser to install. Well the connections they have are different from what I have seen here, which are, connect the black wire from the relay post 85 to the ground, so I hooked up to the battery negative. Run the red wire from the relay post 30 with the built in 30amp fuse to the positive battery terminal. Run the yellow wire, from post 87 and hook up to the positive of the air horn. Next connect the ground wire to the negative side of the horn and ground it at the mounting bolt. Install the fuse next. Next run the blue wire from post 86 to the existing horn hot wire. Ok so here's the deal got it all done tried the pink wire first and the horn was quiet and was on at time of turning key on. So tried the brown wire, and same thing. SO then tried both together and got the sound I was looking for from the horn but it still, as soon as I turned the key on the horn sounded. I'm curious as to what will happen if I take the wire on post 85 and hook that up to the pink wire and just hook the brown one up to the post at 86. Any ideas or knowledge of what will make this work with the wiring kit, or am I better off just wiring it the way Larry has it? I do like the whole connection thing they include nice wire harness to plug right into the relay, makes for a clean look and easy to unplug. Anyway, any help would be appeciated, Scott.

    Stebel Horn

I'am interested in getting a stebel horn for my 2006 RSTD and was wondering where other members got theirs, and if any Canadian members now of a place in Ontario were they are available or do I just have to order online. Also would I better off to just get the horn and buy a relay and wire needed myself. Thanks dkip
  19. just bought a 1990 been trying to trouble shoot fixed one cylinder with new plug wire and boot trying to do the same for other cylinder when i pull the plug when bike is running there is no drop in performance, also the wire will spark outside the wire when unplugged and touching the cylinder with a neww wire and boot
  20. I have acquired a huge amount of 14 gauge thhn wire and rather than scrap it out, if anybody is going to do some lighting or whatever on their bike I'd be happy to mail 15 or 20 foot lengths of it just for the cost of the envelope and postage. btw - what I have now is black, I just got rid of 30 lbs of red. It's all used wire but the insulation is intact
  21. My eyes are starting to get really tired from looking at almost 20 pages of posts about GPS hookups, 12 volt power outlets, hooking direct to battery, not doing that, fuse, no fuse, etc, etc. I have a 2005 RSTD. Here's my question: The aux DC terminal under the seat has a brown lead and a black lead, the 12 volt power outlet has a red wire and white wire. Does it matter which color is hooked to what? Also, is the aux DC terminal already fuse protected? Just want to make sure I do this right because I still have 47 payments left on the bike Seems like a simple question but I have been told that I often do the simple things with a deal of difficulty.
  22. I have read in past postings about connecting new toys to the "accessory lead". Where would I find this wire on my 06 RSTD? Headlight housing? Fuse panel? I just purchased a Garmin Zumo 660 GPS and will be hooking it up this weekend. I already have a couple of other leads connected directly to the positive post on the battery so it is getting a little crowded at that location. If someone can point me in the right direction and perhaps let me know what the colour coding is for this wire that would help speed up the installation project for this weekend!
  23. I have that dreaded E1 error in the ride control system. When I open it up, then It goes away, I know it has to be a loose wire, but which one so I can fix it? Wilkie
  24. Was wondering about people's experiences with routing the wire from the trunk to under the seat? Just had the dealer wire mine. The mechanic ran the wire over the inside top of the trunk came out the back of the top of the trunk behind the passenger backrest (drilled hole), dropped down under the passenger seat and then connected into the wiring under the seat. So, you can actually see the wire running from behind the passenger backrest to under the passenger seat (3-4" worth). It works, and I can secure the wire so it aligns with one of the seams, but IMO, it doesn't look all that great. Also, seems likely to have problems... with the lid going up/down, the wires are going to rub/flex with every opening (although, they are wrapped in electrical tape). I was thinking it may have been better to come out the bottom of the trunk, leaving enough loose wire to allow for the trunk opening/closing. Was wondering what others have done that may be better, or should I just live with it? It does add a lot of light on the back end, which is always good. Also, if anyone is intersted, the Raven color blends very well on my 07 Blue/Black RSV (you can't buy a blue light/spoiler). As always, thanks in advance for your thoughts. Bob
  25. Here's the progress on the wiring as of right now. I've just got 1 more connector to replace then wire in the new and improved wiring harness, plus tie some grounds and brown leads together. Unfortunately I'm running out of chrome wire loom so that part won't get done. Our local Pep Boys is out of stock but there is a website from the manufacturer, www.spectreperformance.com so I will order from them...
