  1. Thanks for your help on the windshield. Hairman
  2. Yeah.. OK so this morning was interesting riding into work with the extra tall/wide Clearview on the bike.. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome windscreen, nice and tall, takes the wind off your face, cuts down on the buffetting and clear to view through and all.. cleans nice etc However, around here in the Maritimes we're into the weird fall weather patterns already, cold at night, hot during the day, humid as heck dawn and dusk etc.. Got out to the bike this morning and it was coated with dew which isn't a big deal.. I didn't put a cover on the bike last night.. no worries.. but when I cleaned off the windscreen it wouldn't stay 'clear'.. it would fog up right away.. ergh.. what the heck.. OK.. So I left it for a few minutes to dry off but the cold dampness in the air (clear skies, beautiful sunrise mind you) would simply wet the windshield again.. Now that's not the worse part.. Once I got it clear I was able to ride out to work but half way there, in a turn I hit a cold patch and zoom, the windshield fogged up quickly and I had no visibility at all!! I can't see over the top of the dang thing.. The only thing that saved me on this twisty road is 15 years of daily familiarity with this road and being able to see around the windshield at the curve coming up (rocky shoulders with no where to pull over).. I shudder to think if it happened with the sun in my face.. wow.. Ever go riding down the highway, especially after dusk and see your mirrors fog up? basically this is what happened this morning.. And it cleared up rather quickly after I went through that cold damp patch on the road. I'm thinking I'm not a happy camper looking through carbonates anymore.. time for some trimming or a new windshield yet again until I find something safe!! RainX on the screen, vent open or closed didn't make a difference..
  3. I need to add vent(s) to my windshield. I know there's a thread about it! I just can't find it.
  4. My wife Debbie and I were on our way to Missouri for a week mc vacation yesterday. We were east of Jay, Ok. about 8 miles. I had just passed two vehicles that were tailgating each other slowing down, speeding up and just plain irritating. I went around them at about 90 miles per hr. faster than ussual and because they speeded up as I was passing them I didn't realize my speed. I had slowed down to about 80 and my windshield broke loose and hit me on the nose and mouth and almost knocked me out. I was able to maintain control until I found a place to pull over and thankfully we are still here to tell about it. After regaining my composure and cleaning the blood We rode to Grove to the emergency rm. long story short no broken nose or facial bones but a deep gash in the cartalege of my nose and a sore cheek bone, broken visor on my helmet and destroyed sunglasses. We stayed the night in a motel in Grove, Ok. and rode back home about 120 miles today without a windshield. I had a clearview xx tall, wide shield with the vent. The shield snapped loose and broke at the two fasteners just below the vent. Ironically the perfect storm because the shield fits in slots on either side and when the shield snapped at the two screws that hold the windshield on it immediately came flying back at me. I think the integrity of the shield strength is compromised due to the vent and the location of the only two screws that hold the windshield in place being just below the vent. If for any reason these two screws fail or the shield snaps at that location the same thing could and would happen to anyone. I am sharing this as a warning to any one with the clearview or any other brand shield with the vent positioned as those are. There isn't much material between the screws and the vent. Also the material used is resistant to scratching, but more prone to chips as I have heard other clearview customers state on this site which leads me to believe that the material used is a harder plastic than the stock shield thus being more brittle and less pliable which could also explain it snapping without warning or apparent damage to the shield before this experience. I have also read threads here on this site of stress cracks apparent in some clearview shields. I also theorize that the clearview shield w/out the vent may be much stronger and this problem may not arise. I loved my clearview shield and it appears to be made of very good quality. The clearview people all seem to be great people. In other words I have nothing against clearview, but I want people on this site to be warned of the possibility of experiencing what I have and we are lucky to be here to tell about it. I am also going to send pics and this same information to clearview to alert them of the potential for the shields failing. The next person may not be as lucky as we were. If there is anyone with similar experiences or have anything to add It could possibly save a life or lives. Of all the things that can possibly go wrong with a motorcycle or other catastrophies while riding I never expected my wind shield to break loose.
  5. Ever since I picked-up my Venture last year, I always had this feeling that it needed a a little touch of something to break-up all those big black areas just a bit. So, during our trip to STAR Days in Arkansas this summer we had Sue Hopper (http://www.signsandwondersbysue.com/motorcycles.php) apply a little bit of her artistic magic. Those who are familiar with Sue's work, know that she could have painted just about anything one could imagine. However, I just wanted something subtle and somewhat original. My inspiration for the requested artwork came from a simple Pilot P-500 pen. It has a bluish-black marbled look to it - kind of like clouds against a midnight sky. So, I showed the pen to Sue and she said that she could replicate that design. So, the goal was to air-brush wispy sort-of com-trails (like what you see come off jets) on the fairing, the lower part of the tank, the lids of the hard-bags, the lid of the trunk and then our names printed on the rear of the trunk lid. We're pretty proud of how it looks. Then a few weeks ago, I began to think about installing a little accent lighting. I didn’t want anything which appeared too extreme, but something which was subtle and attractive. I have always liked the look of midnight-blue, and since it was complimentary to the new touches of paint, the lighting color was an easy choice. The lights I picked-up at a Pep Boy's Auto Supply. I used two different types of LED light configurations on this project. One kind, were little strips of LEDs with an adhesive backing that came in lengths of 5", 10", and 15". The other styles of LED lights were little oval-shaped pods consisting of multiple LED bulbs in a cluster. The pods were about the size of a quarter. All of these LED lights are surprisingly tiny and bright. Total cost of the lights itself was only about $120. Unfortunately, I cannot offer much information on the technical side of the install process because I had someone else (who knows what they are doing) do the work for me. The price he charged me was so reasonable, he told me not to tell anyone one what it cost me - because he won't do it again for that price. But, I was happy with it! All of the accent lighting is hard-wired to the main system and can be flipped-on with a little toggle switch which is hidden behind the seat. It can also be switched-on without the key in the ignition. Keep in mind that almost all states prohibit the use of any blue lights on a vehicle which is in operation. This means that I will only turn-on the accent lighting when the bike is parked. Cops are pretty serious about this law because blue lights are reserved exclusively for law enforcement in most states. Probably the most unique feature of this lighting project is the way I managed to light-up the windshield. But first, I owe credit for this idea to Bryan (Penguin from STAR Chap. #152 in SLC, UT). I totally stole this idea from him. Sorry Brian, but, it does look really cool! Anyway, his theory was that the windshield would have fiber-optic type of properties if properly lit. So, I experimented by placing one of those tiny LED strip-lights at the base of the windshield, inside the fairing and pointing up. Oh my gosh! (As my teenage daughter always says). The result was even better than I had imagined. With the accent lighting on, the base of the windshield now has a subtle, midnight-bluish glow to it, while all along the edges of the windshield there is an intense glow. My windshield is just a medium-height, Show Chrome brand. I believe that this trick would work with most windshields. So, if you're looking for something non-practical but very decorative to do to your bike, these were a couple of my most recent attempts. Be Safe! Pete & Sandy
  6. I just got a 2008 Venture and absolutely love it! Great upgrade from the Suzuki C50. So, now I'm into the fun part...accessorizing! Georgia gets a bit hot and I've already ordered the lower vents for my legs but someone mentioned that they've seen a vented windshield. Does anyone have one?? If so, how do you like it and where did you find it? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Ride Safe... Dee Life is short! Break the rules! Forgive quickly! Kiss slowly! 7. I'm loosing it. Someone asked me to order windshield if I get one from JC whitney who was it????? Joe:confused24:
  8. I had a spare windshield in storage for a number of years. It was stored between two pieces of cardboard held together with scotch tape. Is there a easy way to clean the tape off the windshield? A few small strips are being stubborn.
  9. Installed new windshield what you think? Joe
  10. After picking up my 85 Royale In May one of the first things I noticed was that the windshield had been scratched along the top edge. There was also a film on the inside of the windshield i'm assuming was some kind of anti-glare film. It was deteriorating and flaking off. The previous owner I believe tried to remove the film with some kind of abrassive and had scratched the windshield in a three inch area along the top edge, right in my line of vision. A new windshield was going to be my firest repalcement part and several members had already pointed me to several on E-bay for about $75.00. While at Wally world yesterday I noticed a product called QUIXX repair system Acrylic Scrtach Remover. Part of me didn't believe it would work because my winshield was pretty clouded but for @$9 bucks i figured it wasn't much of a loss. I got to worK on it right away and tested it on a small part of the clouded area. The stuff is white and creamy and just seemed to smear into the plexiglass. The instructions say to rub it in hard.At first I don't think I was rubbing it in hard enough so I added a little more and rubbed harder. It seemed to be clearing. I spent the next hour slowly and firmly rubbing in compound in circular motions and watching the clouding get clearer and clearer using several more small applications of additional compound. The stuff never completely blended into the windshield and disappeared so i went to my old stand by all purpose cleaner Pledge Clean and shine with Orange. When I got done wiping off the Pledge and the residual cleaner I was shocked ! The windshield looked like new. The cloudiness was gone. A few of the deeper scratchs could be seen at an angle in the sun light but the general abrasive area was cleared. On top of that after cleaning out the cloth that come withthe kit I started to wipe the inside of the shield where the flaky film was and the wet cloth with a bit of the compound still in it started to remove the film as well.Several hours of work and a $9.00 box of Quixx and the windshield looks like new. I'll try to get some pix up later today. I regret i didn't think to take some before shots. I really didn't expect it to work so well. Phil.
  11. Hi all, I have recently added a Venture fairing to my 1998 Royal Star. What I'm looking for is the windshield bracket (the metal band that you screw the windshield to). Additionally I need to fill the holes left where the speedometer/idiot light/cassette door reside. These parts NEED NOT BE FUNCTIONAL, in fact I would prefer they be non-working condition as the Royal Star has all instruments on the tank, and I'm just going to paint these black and use them as block off plates. I will be posting on various Royal Star/Venture sites. Thankyou Earl star4earl@comcast.net
  12. Hello everyone, I removed the plastic chrome trim right below the windshield. The rubber trim pieces on the top and bottom of the trim were barely attached. What should I use to glue the rubber back to the trim piece? I was thinking clear silicone? Any suggestions? Thanks, Eric
  13. Anyone have a factory or after market shorty windsield you'd like to get rid of??
  14. Well it finally happened....I "gently" laid the bike over on it's side last weekend which happened to be right up against a tree and cracked the windshield. Would anyone out there happen to have a stock windshield they are willing to part with to fit an 02 ???
  15. On vacation in Bruce Peninsula and wife came apon a 2000 Yamaha RoadStar 1600 for $7950 which will go for $7500+tax as is . Looks to be excelant shape with sadle bags windshield carb jetted and K&N filter. Any advice??? Hard to find first gen in good shape for good price.
  16. I pick up my new 08 Venture this afternoon. Thanks for the help in my decision making process...we looked at a lot of bikes, kept coming back to this one. My only concern is the windshield and looking through it, getting a shorter one and then buffeting the wife. I'm sure we'll get through it. THANKS. WOO HOO!!!! As some of you know, I am currently shopping for a new bike and strongly considering the Venture. I have a couple of questions that would be great to get answers to. 1) I have heard that the 07's have some issues?? Is this true? Something about the electronics/CB/radio suddently quit working. There is a black 07 at at local dealer, but if I should focus on 08's, I have no problems with that. 2) Do you actually look through the windshield? If so, how do you deal with that in rain? (this would be my first touring bike, so looking through the windshield might be the norm..??) Thanks for the help.
  17. Ran across a guy on a Goldwing with a windshield wiper. I asked him if it scratched his windshield and he said it had a little bit, but not much. He said it worked pretty good. RandyA
  18. I would like to put a three pocket windshield pouch on my 07 RSTD. Has anyone put one on, and how did you mount it? Had a Harley one on my Venture (sold it with the bike). Looks like it would need to be mounted to the windshield bolts, but needs to rise upward a bit to miss the speedo. What does anyone have and how is it mounted?
  19. Just listed my Short (From Yamaha) windshield in classifieds if anyone interested,Just bought 2 weeks ago. Tom
  20. I have a 2005 RSV with a show chrome windshiel. The windshield sees a little short. Does anyone know what the height and width of the factory windshield is? Also does the show chrome create more turbulance? You would think Yamaha would put on the one that resulted in a more aerodynamic ride. Just wondering!! Also anyone going to the Texas Star-B-Q? Thanks
  21. I'm looking for ways to mount my Nextar Q3. I saw an add on E-bay for a mount that would attach to a 1" handle bar, but of course on a first generation Venture the handlebars aren't round OR 1" diameter. I could just use the suction cup on the windshield, but I'd really like something better. Any ideas?? How good does the suction cup work on a motorcycle?? Frank D.
  22. Hey, Thinking of putting some vents in my windshield. tired of not getting enough air flow to stay cool on warm days. Anybody ever buy and install aftermarket vents? CLAY

    Rain X and OEM Windshield

One of the guys going on our cross country trip has an OEM Windshield (17")on his RSMV. He is taking Rain X in anticipation of the rain we will hit. I believe that Rain X is a No No for this Windshield. It will Blister it. Am I correct? What about the ShowChrome Windshield? Can I use Rain X or do I need something else?
  24. I like how it looks but there is about 1/4 inch or less gap without the windshield. Just wondering if anyone had a poor man tip on getting rid of the gap. Thanks for your time ! Jon
  25. Its super June bug. Well it flys like one anyway. Even the dogs were avoiding it. How would you like to be riding down the road in TX doing about 70 with no windshield and have one of these hit you right in the forehead.
