  1. If you are riding in a State that does not require you to where a Helmet, how often do you wear yours? Before anyone gives me the rant about how stupid it is to ride without one, I know it is unsafe and unwise. We wear ours unless it is uncomfortably warm with it on. We LOVE the free feeling without them. It's also safer to wear full face, but we choose the half helmets because we don't like the enclosed feeling of the full face. We don't see very many riders with helmets on when it is warm out - except for those on the Crotch Rockets. They are usually in full face and full leathers &/or body armor, even when it is 100 degrees!! I don't know how they do it. craigr
  2. Hey everyone, My son is going to be coming to Rolling Thunder with me in three weeks. He's going to start out on the bike with me, but we have a couple who are trailering down so if he gets tired, or wet, he can jump in the cage with them. Once we are in Washington though we are going to be on the bike at all times. I'm looking for a good rain suit for him to wear but have had no luck finding anything, online at least. I wear a Frog Toggs suit and wanted one of those but far as I can tell they don't make youth sizes. Do any of you have a suggestion as to where I should look for this? Of course I know it's not going to rain at all while we are down there , but you know, he just really wants a rain suit! Thanks for your help Joe
  3. DON'T forget to get a huge supply of ice this time ....You know for the.... I dont have a trailer like last year BUT than I can ask FOURPAWS to wear a :rotfl:packsack
  4. This tire came off of Dave`s ( Just monkeyin around) 1st gen, it is not to the wear bars yet. Really lucky he made it on this thing.
  5. NO NO NO!!! I have a nice pair of RIDING BOOTS. I haven't been able to get them on since my accidents and all the cutting they did on my leg & foot til this week. I finally got my bad foot into the boot but it is too tight to wear. Foot is still very tender. Hurts like he** to get it on but I really want to wear these things for some reason. How can I break in in to that foot? Wearing it is very painfull. If I soak it and wear it dry would it help? Don't know if I can stand it that long. When they put my foot back togather my instep? (top of my foot) came out higher than it was and was already higher than normal making it hard to find Slip-on boots I could wear. I really like this pair of Iron Age boots and would like to make them fit. Any ideas?? I've alredy looked for that spray-on stuff that used to be around but can't find it. I'm afraid of getting the thing on and pressure causing it to swell til I can't get it off!!
  6. just wondering when to change avon venom, i'm not sure how many miles i have on mine but they are down to the wear bars but still an 1/8" away from being a slick. i hate to change too soon but also don't want go to the edge either.
  7. I had a look at my rear brake pads today and was surprised at how much material was still there after 20,000 miles of hard riding. I use a lot of rear break for low speed stability, and city riding etc. these are the EBC Double H Sintered pads and thus far have already outlasted the previous OEM rear pads. I haven't pulled them out of the bike to measure them against a fresh pair but looks like less than half worn, and even the inside one doesn't appear to be as much worse worn than the outside one, which is typical for our bikes. I was planning on just swapping them out, in for outside to get equal wear on them.. I wasn't expecting so little wear on them. Wow.. I always carry a spare set of pads with me on the bike (doesn't take any space) as I got caught once with metal on metal pads on the wrong side of a long weekend holiday out of country.. ugh. and those had less than 20,000 in them.. but thus far I must say I am very happy with these pads over OEM Your mileage, as they say, may vary.. (opinions too)
  8. I read this today in Belt Drive Betty's Facebook Blog, (she runs a Canadian Bikers Newsletter and Biker Friendly Business Directory). I thought it was worth sharing with everyone and especially those who dont wear gear or ensure their passengers wear full gear. Here is her website http://www.beltdrivebetty.com I know I was young once. Of that I am quite sure. And I know when I was young I took chances some smarter than others but... I have become highly critical of those who wear things like sandals and flip flops when they ride. When I pull up beside some dude who has his gal on the back of his motorcycle - and she is wearing a bikini or shorts and a halter/tank top, sandals/flip flops and a full faced helmet I want to SCREAM - I WANT TO RAGE - I want to ask him "Do you not value the life of that pretty young thing behind you?" I have been asking you for feedback on buying new gear....today I ask about foot wear...the following story has a lot to do with why I am the way I am when it comes to my feelings about good gear. Back in the day when I was young, I was living in a little community called Mara Lake BC. My old man was a guy with the nick name of Rotten Ronnie - aptly named for the noxious gases that exploded from him after a feed of moose or deer meat...Ron is the man who taught me to ride a motorcycle. Road rash....a story of gory and disturbing proportions that I want to share with you for it is this incident that set me on the path to being an opinionated lady on this topic in many, many ways. One weekend, Ron and I had gone to Kelowna, we had had a great time and got up nice and early on the Sunday morning to head home, Ron had things around the yard he wanted to get done before work on Monday morning. There were lots of motorcycles out - it was a glorious day to ride. As we passed through Vernon, traffic began to get thicker, there was construction up ahead about 10 kilometers or so. This young buck (remember I was a lofty 24 then) pulled up beside us on his Suzuki sport bike. He had this very buxom young lady riding pillion. She was wearing a full faced helmet, a bikini and sandals. He was wearing jeans, tee, boots and a full face. I sat on my ***** pad shaking my head thinking to myself this guy really doesn't value what he has sitting behind him... Well, we leave the set of lights, the dude on the sport bike far faster than us on the our FXRS...he's gone like a rocket....as Ron and I come around a corner - just before the construction zone that is between Vernon and Armstrong - we see the carnage....my blood runs cold and I am almost sick to my stomach. There is buddy's sport bike, embedded in the trunk of a car...buddy is screaming, standing but wobbly, bleeding and road rashed...his once pretty little girlfriend is now dead. Her once buxom form is nothing more than bones now as she has no chest left, just a rib cage from doing a face plant at about 100 KMPH and skidding down the shoulder of the road into the ditch. Her one foot is gone - literally worn off from the high exit rate - she had skidded down the pavement for a good 100 feet or so before tumbling into the ditch. Rib bones and raw meat are all that were left of her. That and her un scarred, untouched face. I guess that was a consolation, at least her family could have an open casket funeral. That crash is forever etched in my mind. The howling of the rider - that of a wolf in enormous pain...the visual of this pretty, pretty girl at the set of lights only minutes before transposed over the corpse lying in the ditch that I saw will never leave my mind's eye. Now perhaps you understand all of the questions from last week about good gear - maybe it will explain a bit to you about why I get a tad opinionated on the subject of gear and helmets etc...so today the question is footwear - what brand, what style and why you chose the particular style you did. Foot wear is a very important and vital part of the gear equation in my mind...Please share with me your thoughts on choosing good footwear...
  9. No nobody ran over me this time. I caught one of the nastiest bugs I've ever had. Cramps so bad I couldn't stand up let alone drive and must have threw up 25 times yesterday. Finally got Son-in-Law to take me to Emergency Room last night. They couldn't tell me what was wrong but got cramps stopped. I'm so weak I can hardley sit in chair. I took flu shot about 18 hrs before this started. Could that be it? Meds they gave me for cramps going to wear off and I need to go to Drug Store. I wish somebody would teach the Warden to drive. I really love that lady and she treats me like a king but has never wanted to drive. Just won't do it??
  10. Alright...i'm having a problem and need some advice....I recently lubricated all the hinges and moving parts on my saddlebags...NOW, my right saddlebag will latch closed BUT after riding for a few minutes it pops open. I was able to duplicate this by hitting the bottom of the bag a few times and i can easily get the latch to pop. I have taken it apart and put it back together. Everything was tight and it is still doing it. I have not seen anyway of making the latches tighter and i'm in need of some help. This didnt happen before i lubed them so im thinking the lube has to wear off but im hoping someone has an idea...
  11. Anyone know if a head set is made to be used without a helmet or a half helment. And what kind do you think has better sound I thought about the yamaha ones. But somtimes I do not wear a helmet when going for a short ride. And would like to purchase a half helmet, So would like to find a headset that could do both. Or is that a pipe dream.
  12. Here are some photos of the Avon Venom tire that "wore out". The cords show in three places on one-half of the tire. I'm looking for some feedback on the following (so don't hold back ): 1) The tread wear indicators(TWI) on these tires are essentially WORTHLESS. How do you use the TWI? They are on the outer edge of the tire...where the cords are showing, the TWI looks almost new! 2) How do you gauge tire wear on these tires? Seems like tracking mileage is the most "popular" method. 3) It almost looks like the tire was over-inflated?? I usually keep the rear tire at 38 psi...but...prior to leaving for Charlotte (pulling a trailer) I bumped up the pressure to 42 psi. 4) If the tire is at 42 psi, and the ambient air temperature is +94-98 degrees, what happens to the pressure in the tire? Common sense says that the tire pressure could/should expand 2-8 psi. That means that the tire pressure could be as high as 50 psi.
  13. Tried to search for this already, and didn't find any threads on this subject, so forgive me if this topic has already been discussed. Headwraps / doo-rags I am finding in my old-er age, and in this VERY hot southern Alabama summer, that I am sweating a lot more under the helmet. I am typically outdoors 6-8 hours on my ride in the heat of the day (yes, I am drinking plenty of fluids). I have never been one to wear any type of headwrap before, but I am finding I need something to soak up a good portion of sweat. I can literally lean over and it looks like a waterfall of sweat pouring out of my helmet. So my prerequisites are: 1) soak up sweat, and 2) keep head somewhat cooler. So what do you prefer / suggest? Will the basic cotton work? Or would I have to keep 2-3 in my bags to wear each day as one gets "full"? What do you think of the Dupont CoolMax products? Any specific brand, vendor, website you would recommend? Thanks in advance for your inputs.
  14. I want to find a blue tooth head set that I can use and not wear a helmet does anyone know of any? Sometimes I wear a half helmet so I would need something that might be able to be used for both? thanks!!
  15. 10,000 miles and I get a noise like a rock is caught but I don't believe that's the issue. Need to take the calipers off and have a look. Would the pads be worn out already? They have indicators for wear? As an aside, we did a beautiful overniter into Kalispell MT thru Eureka. What a gorgeous couple days here!
  16. My wife and I were on the way home from Elizabeth, Wv and I was on my 650 V-star as my 2007 rsmv is in the shop for radio, windshield, and rear shock. She was on her 250 V-Star about 60 yrds behind me. Thank god my Wife is ok with only a few scratches on her bike. Well a deer ran out in front of me as I was riding about 45mph at 7 pm. I locked both brakes hoping he could scoot across the road in front of me. No such luck. He hit me dead square at about the headlight and side and took the bike out from under me. broke the left floorboard and bent the handlebars. I think the handlebars got me as I was flying over bike as I now have two broken ribs on left side, over my heart. Hurts like the dickens. The bad thing is, I know for a fact that this will hurt for about 6 weeks. When I was taking martial arts classes I guess I got a little cocky with my instructor and he un-intentionally broke the last lower rib on my left side. Deer had to be shot as it busted it up pretty bad. lessonS learned: Always wear a full face helmet (if I can fighure out how to send a picture of it I will). Always wear a Joe Rocket or like breatheable and padded Motorcycle Jacket. Alway wear gloves (my half gloves protected all but outside of my right wrist). Always wear steel toe boots. Am going to look into vented / armored pants as I have road rash on both knees. I hit deer hit at 45 mph and I came away from it with just two brokeb ribs.... I thinK I'm very luck, The big guy must have been watching over my wife and I:2143:...
  17. 2007 RSV, I'm the 2nd owner. PO replaced the rear (Dunlop 404) at about 17,000 mi. and I just replaced the front at 18,700 mi. The front had some life yet, but starting on a fairly long jaunt (about 850 miles) and it was almost down to the wear bars. I chose to replace with the original Dunlop 404 since that is what the PO put on the rear. Just curious about tire wear results on similar model and year , being aware that riding style can easily effect tire life. I know that there are a kazillion opinons on tires , but it does give us something to discuss. Mel:Venture:
  18. I dunno, maybe it's age (45), or the cruising nature of the venture but I find year by year I am more worried about functional equipment and less worried about how cool I look. Case in point, I just bought a Tourmaster 2 Pivot jacket, it's not leather. See it here: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001A6U9R2/ref=oss_product]Amazon.com: Tour Master Pivot Series 2 Jacket - Small/Yellow: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21sOC3lOcXL.@@AMEPARAM@@21sOC3lOcXL[/ame] I got the yellow one. I've been wearing my reflective vest in the early predawn trips to work, over my leather jacket. But I want to be more visible all of the time. I mostly wear a full face helmet, switching to 3/4 white on warmer days. Always wear a helmet. I just bought my first two pairs of Kevlar lined jeans and khakis (sliders and I love em). But, I'm still an avid snowboarder so, I hope I'm growing up, not old! Maybe it's the pilot in me (hang-gliders mainly) that knows, "there are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots...
  19. Put on a set of E3s last year. They are at 16,000 miles now and the rear tire, anyhow, looks like I should get another 4,000 miles on it. I keep them aired at 38 - 40 psi. I do like to get on the throttle a little which I would think would wear the rear tire a little faster. But...the front tire is worn more than the rear. I did not go to the smaller size front. I've never had a front tire wear faster than rear. Any ideas why (aside from maybe bad tire compound)???
  20. Ok i was reading a thread the other day about showing your helmet and most of the one's i saw on the thread were involved in a accident. now i know the object is to not fall over on your scooter but it happens so i went on a search for a new helmet and i wanted to get some input. i really like this one http://www.hjchelmets.com/images/products/product_images/is33/solid/wine_side2.jpgsince i got a little older and need to wear glasses this seems like a good choise and i like the integrated sun shield. any thoughts and comments are always welcome. Thanks Ron

Just order a set of E's for my venture from Jake Wilson for 209.00 I so glad teh brickstones wore out 7500 miles and the rear is gone and could not wait any longer on the front to wear out.... I have never been so sick of a set tires in my life.

  23. Being a poor person I always buy the cheapest tires. Overall I've had decent success with all of them. This last rear, however, has demonstrated a very strange wear pattern. It is a Shinko Tourmaster. I have about 8k or so on it. I already have a replacement but when checking it the other day I noticed one side of the tire had say slightly less than 1/8' and the other side, about 180 degrees away, was bald. What the hell? I've never seen such a thing! I could only assume it's because it's a cheap, shi tty tire. It's always ridden fine even at sustained high speed. Thought this was a real strange wear pattern and curious if anyone else has experienced this. Cheers!
  24. Just wanted to drop a note about Karl, I went to visit yesterday and he was able to sit up, talk, eat and the surgery went well however he still has a few issues to deal with. His white cell count is down and his sugar is up and to top it off the brace that cost $1200 bucks he needs to wear for the next month does not fit. He is in good spirits and is quite amused with his happy button. Please keep him in your prayers as he still has an uphill battle.
  25. Hello to all my wonderful friends. Thanks for all your well wishes and prayers. Home from hospital and trying to adjust to all this metal on my leg!! I will wear it till the bone heals, which could be up to six months I wore the other one for eight months!! I have four metal rings around my lower right leg and attached to those are 12 wires going into the bone, and two bigger bolts going in to hold the bone out and in place in my shin. Biggest risk is infection, and I have to keep them clean and not allow the skin to attach to the wires etc. OUCH !! Doctor's think that because my knee doesn't bend anymore the leg chose the next weakest area to try and bend.....which was at the bone graft site. Once the leg heals I think I may have to wear some sort of brace on the lower leg to prevent it wanting to bend -- but that's okay, and better than not walking at all. So, will take some time to sit here at the 'puter for long, but the good thing is: I'M BACK
