1. I know there are some truck drivers in our group and maybe some people that have been in my situation. Incident: Traveling south on I-77 in SC. Truck blow a tire on his truck not trailer. The tire was moving and I couldn't avoid from hitting it without hit other cars. Truck pulled over. SCHP showed up and did an incident report, but reported that I struck the tire in roadway so it sounds like it was just sitting there. Got back home called my insurance company they filed against the trucks insurance company. I got the adjusters contact info and contacted him. His response (truck drivers Ins Adjuster): We got the truck drivers records stating the tires was fairly new with only 2000 miles on it and his records that he checks his tires regularly. So we believe it was a faulty tire and it is not our liability. We will trace down the truck company that did the onside repair and see if they have the tire and you (me) can file a claim against Goodyear. My response: It is not my responsibility to file against goodyear that would be yours (truck ins) if you believe the tire is faulty. That they should pay for my claim and repair my motorcycle. Then they file against Goodyear to get their money back. What is everyone's thoughts and or experience with this?
2. Just Ordered mine tonite. www.denniskirk.com Dennis Kirk has a great price on the Avon Venom AM41 Front 150/80H-16 $127.99 Avon Venom AM42 Rear 150/90HB-15 $110.95 Shipping is $5.00 a tire Total $248.94 Hopefully this might be a sign that spring sales are coming on tires. Everyone else was still at the $159.99 - $162.99 FRONT & $151.99 - $160.99 http://www.jakewilson.com/ http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/ http://www.compacc.com/
3. Anyone tried a 185 on their RSTD? Wasn't sure if there would be a fit problem. I ordered a 165 and will see how much room I have for the next tire. Selection of 185s is a bit better than 165. I had a General Altimax HP on my last bike and loved that tire. Looked great and handled well.
4. Well, I'm waiting for my RSV seats to get back from Rick Butler and my clutch kit from Earl. No problem...got my Triumph "summerized" on Sunday and took her for a quick shakedown cruise. Seems OK but steering seemed a bit heavy even though I had checked the tire pressure. OK, something to check for the next time. Went out to use her today and quickly realized that the front tire is nearly flat (2 season old Michelin with only about 7,000 km)...what the...? Checked more closely and discovered that the tire valve is split and nearly falling off. I had forgotten to ask for new valves when the tires were installed in July /2010 and it seems most shops don't do it automatically. So...I get to pull off the wheels and bring them in to have new valves installed (At $34 per wheel!) and, as a bonus, they won't try to save my Dyna Beads, so those will have to be replaced later, by me. AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH! 10 bucks says the 55 F + temps we've been having will disappear by the time I can get this done or get my RSV parts in/back. As before....AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH! Andy
5. I am a member of Amazon.com Prime. This means I get free 2-day shipping and anything overnight for $3.99. My brother was hospitalized, I realized I might need to ride there, and my front tire was in iffy shape. I bought an Avon Venom 150/80-16 71H (front) for a good price ($145.80, near the cheapest I found) and selected overnight shipping for $3.99. It is out for delivery now. That $149.79 total is way cheap when you consider overnight shipping of a 16 pound tire. Heck, it's cheaper than Dennis Kirk by $10 and Jake Wilson doesn't carry the tire. Another option to consider if you have Amazon Prime and need something quick. I'll let you know if the tire comes out of date, as cheap tires have been known to do. Dave
6. I went for a ride yesterday with some friends and one was on a Tour Deluxe. He knew that his tire was worn to the wear bars and already had a new set to install but we thought he would be OK to ride yesterday since we were not going that far, maybe 150 miles, and we wouldn't be on any high speed highways. Apparently Avon puts the wear bars right on top of the cords. About 20 miles from home the tire went flat. Wasn't a big deal. He just pulled into a driveway and waited while we rode on home to get the trailer. Attached is a photo of the tire. As you rotate the tire all the way around there are alternating patches of rubber and bare cords. Just thankful we were close to home. So be aware that with Avons there is no margin of safety once you are down to the bars. It was also interesting that he had sevaral Harley riders stop to check on him while he was parked. A couple were ladies who stopped to console him for about 15 minutes. Dennis
7. I am considering having my 2009 Venture "triked" next year (Hannigan). I have done a bit of research and price checking and I have some questions. 1. I currently average about 45 MPG with 2 up and normal legal speeds. What sort of mileage am I likely to get after the conversion? 2. My OEM front tire was still fairly good at 15K, what sort of tire life should I expect after the conversion. I also heard/read that using a rear tire installed to rotate in the opposite direction would extend the front tire life. The explanation was that it had something to do with the belts/plies compressions (beyond my understanding however).
8. Ok, so I get home from work on Thursday around 5:15pm and it is 58 degrees out...I change and get comfortable and I walk around the garage and decide to unveil the beast....I take the cover off the bike and admire its beauty for a few minutes...Hey, maybe I'll fire her up............One touch of the starter and varooom, the beast is alive !!!!!! I let the girl warm up for a few minuted and shut off the choke....let me check the tire pressure ....ok I add a pound in the rear tire and also the front...man, is it nice out....WHAT THE HECK.....I'll take her out for a short spin around the block and flush the cobwebs out of her...so I grab my leather jacket and my helmet and gloves and a cool pair of shades and I'm off........Man does this feel so good...I mean the wind in my face and all...you know what I mean...Well, the around the block ride got longer and longer and about 35 minutes later I find myself stopped at a red light in the town of Lancaster....Man I'm am so happy to be out, YEAH this feels so good....I mean this is so cool...Well I glance to my left and a sheriff's car pulls up up along side of me....I glance over and realize its a deputy I trained years ago...I smile and wave ,he does the same....HE DOESN'T RECOGNIZE ME WITH MY HELMET AND SHADES ON....I think he does when he rolls down the passenger window and says......"NICE SLIPPERS RIDE SAFE".....WHAT..!!!!.... Oh C&&p... Now I hope he didn't recognize me...What a sight to all the cagers I must have been....BIG BAD BIKER IN HIS LEATHER GET UP WITH THE FLANNEL PJ"S AND BASSET HOUND SLIPPERS WITH THE EARS FLAPPING IN THE WIND.......
9. My new Escape Trailer from America's Best Trailers took about an hour to put together after if got here now I need that Carbon 1 hitch. Plus it came with a cover, spare tire and wheel and another cooler rack that has a cover as well.
10. I'm getting new rubber soon (just hit 18K on the front and 13K on the rear) and am considering going whitewall on the '99 RSV. I have the green/grey paint scheme, and have always just had blackwalls, but I am curious as to how the RSV looks with both wide and/or thin whitewall's on them. If you have pics of your RSV with a whitewall tire, please post so I can get a feel for how it looks. Don't care about the brand of tire (God knows we don't need THAT discussion again!), but just how it looks vs. a blackwall. Thanks!
11. I want to lift the rear end up an inch to spine the back wheel. Last night while coming home, the back wheel actually felt like, the tire was wobbling from side to side. want to but in neutral and spine the tire, and check to see, if the tire has failed
12. I know that good vendors change all the time. Where is the best online store for buying tires nowdays? It used to be Southwest Moto Tire in Arizona. Is there anyone better?
13. Well.... I've taken tomorrow off for a three day weekend. Tomorrow will be spent bringing my wheel and tire to the shop to have a new rear tire put on. The rest of the weekend will be spent riding. (I Hope). I think I've narrowed it down between the Dunlop D404 and The Shinko 777. Any thoughts on these or should I be looking at something different all together? I'm really leaning towards the Dunlop but just thought I'd pop in for a few varied opinions. Hope ya'll are doing great! Happy trails! Jay
14. Will be traveling to Florida Keys with CaptainJoe at the end of March, 3,000 miles roundtrip. Have a '09 RSV Hannigan trike with 7,500 miles on it. Wondering if I need to replace the front tire before trip. The new OEM Bridgestone tire had a thread depth of 9/32". Our front tire now has thread depths of 6/32" center and 4/32" sides. Appears front tire was being run underinflated. Always used Hannigan recommendation, 35 psi front and 28 psi rear. Based on the wear, believe I need to up the front pressure. If I up the front pressure, wonder if original tire will last for my trip? Center is only down 3/32" from the new depth. Hate to throw tire away before its time is up, and weather will be milder when I return from my trip. Ordered a new AM42 rear tire for front and Ride-On balancer/sealant. These should arrive in a few days. Do you feel the tire replacement is necessary before my trip? Thanks!

Rear Tire

Just put on a new Avon, got about 3k on it. Bikes been parked for a few due to weather and it's totally flat! Filled it back up, lost pressure fast!!!!!! Put some soapy water around rim and sure enough, it is leaking around almost the entire rim. This happened once before, dealer had to r and r the tire, but it never completely stopped. This time the dealer put a tube in it to stop the leak. Any issue with running a tube on the rear tire?
16. I'm replacing rear tire on my 86 venture. That is going smoothly, however, I also want to replace the front tire as well and this is where I've run into a big fat... "HUH????". The front tire is a Bridgestone Spitfire touring and the only size I can see on it is listed as such: **** MR90-18 71H ***** again... HUH?????? what the heck is that? I've looked online and cant seem to find any such size. I'm Planning on going with the D404 Dunlop 140/90/16 on the rear from motorcycle superstore online as the $105 with free shipping seems to be the cheapest I can find. I'd like to put the matching Dubnlop on the front but am lost with this tire size issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jay
17. Hi: I sent the bike to Florida last fall where it is being stored in the Titusville area. We flew down last Decemeber and travelled to Key West and back. Awesome experience. We are flying down again in mid march for some more touring. I will likely need the rear tire replaced while in the Titusville Florida area. Is anyone aware of a shop somewhere in this area where I can wait while the wheel is removed and tire mounted/balanced. I will supply the tire. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Jim
18. looking for recommendations for tire pressure for the following set up Royal Star Venture Nexxan Car Tire on Rear Wheel Side Car setup Anyone with similar set up please respond
19. Just wanted to post my "findings" for the benefit of anyone out there contemplating either or both of these "mods". Last year I installed new tires and went to a 130 front tire. I installed inexpensive tires as I did not want to invest a lot if I wasn't happy with the results. The purpose of this, as is well documented, was to improve low speed handling...which it did. For me, at least, the downside was poor tracking at speed (anything beyond "low speed"), especially at normal highway speeds. Cornering was fine. I then made and installed levelling links using information and specs herein. Didn't notice much difference considering I was already running a 130 front. However, as the rear tire wore down, the tracking became worse (which is pretty normal anyway as the rear tire flattens off) Last week I replaced both tires with Dunlop E3's, going back to stock 150 on the front. Went out for a couple good rides Saturday and Sunday, encountering pretty much every driving condition including some major construction areas where the pavement has been ripped up and patched and I am thoroughly happy with how the bike now handles. Low speed, parking lot maneuvers are easy, tracking at speed is very good, the twisties take very little effort and the bike does not jump all over on those patched up roadways. IMHO ... go with the levelling links instead of a 130 front tire (unless of course you are short in the leg) The levelling links will raise your scoot by appx 1 inch I believe. When I made mine, I altered that a bit and it's appx 1.5 inches taller at the rear. No problem for me with a 32" inseam.
20. I picked up a spare rear rim to try a CT. Went searching today for a tire and it seems that the Kumhos have all dried up. What's the current "hot topic" tire that's available these days? About all I have seen would be the BFG in the right size. TIA, Iz
21. Discovered a slash on my left front tire on my SUV. It started leaking air as I arrived at work last night.Truck needed tires soon anyway so I went to the tire dealer. I had looked up the price online and set my appt there as well. Over 600 bucks. When I got the bill it was under 500 bucks with a mail in rebate as well. Took me a minute but I realized then that they pro rated my old set. That saved me over 100 bucks. It was a pleasent surprise.... Next week, the car!!!!
