I'm getting ready to change out my rear tire and I want to grease the drive shft as well. My question is what advise do you have and what all should I be looking for?

I have been getting a pulsation from the steer tire when going straight down the road. Different air pressure to the forks makes a slightdifference. More pressure, more pulse. The tire were is normal. Any ideas?

Bought a Kumho powerstar and finally tore the bike down and placed CT on rear rim. Couldn't get it to take air so went to Halls tire. They sprayed with CRC and hit it with a tire seater(large volume of air in an extreemly short burst! well it partially seated. they to took it up to 70psi. still partial seat. they repeated this process several times bumping the pressure up to 80 psi until i finally said I'll 'take it home let it sit in the truck bed in this 95 deg heat and see it it seats. welp... it didn't I took tire back, they put some tire goo all around tire and rim and still only achieved a partial seat in numerous tries... 45 min worth of trying... finally concluded I did not want to get anyone hurt and it just wasn't worth it... My old motorcycle tire re-seated at 30 psi. Observations: 1. There is a raised lip on the innerside of the motorcycle rim. A car rim does not have this and in fact is rounded over. 2. Both MC and CT are 15 inches at widest part of inner tire. 3. A MC tire sidewall is thicker (3ply). 4. There is a different angle on the narrowest part of inner tire(sharper on the MC tire). Learned a long time ago if you find yourself swimming upstream and you aren't making any progress sometimes its best not to push it. Going to Cody next thursday and can bring tire along if anyone wants it for $50 Reason I was putting CT on, was I've only got 4-5/32nds tread left on front and back tires and didn't think I could ride out and back (+4000 miles) on the dunlop 404's as I already have 7800 mile on them. Last week I ordered a Dunlop E3 for front and will now have to order an E3 rear tire. Oh well... it's not going to get here in time, so, I believe I will trailer the RSV on my harbor freight trailer rated for 1200 lbs. towed behind the 2009 Toyota Corolla. I guess it isn't all bad as in this heat an AC will be much appreciated.

I wasn't sure where to post this. It's about tires, but it's on a sidecar rig and it's got a little bit of darkside throw in for good measure. I decided to put it where I thought it might get the most eyes. I have a '83 with a California Friendship I sidecar. I've been getting about 3k miles out of a Dunlop 404 on the rear. Ideally with a sidecar rig I'd run a car tire but after doing MUCH digging, it appears that a car tire isn't an option with the 16'' wheel. So I'm looking for the meanest, nastiest, live forever tire I can find. It looks like a lot of people are running Avon Vemon's or Dunlop Elite 3's. Is there anything else I should be looking at? I see a lot of chatter about the Avon's cracking so I'm shying away from them, but the E 3's in 1st Gen sizes aren't radials. I don't know why, but I think I should be running a more modern radial tire. Any issues with running bias ply's? I even looked into swapping in a 15'' Vmax wheel but couldn't find any one that had actually done it and there is very little clearance between the swingarm and the stock tire. So even if you could get a Vmax wheel on there, I doubt that I could find a car tire that would clear. Thoughts? Comments? Rude remarks? -
Had a hard time finding the 16/90/150. I was going to order them online but couldn't find any so I ordered it from the shop down the road from me. He could only find 7 left from all their tire sorces. I didn't need it yet but ordered it and got it and paid for it so it is ready to go on when I do need it. I wonder if they are not going to sell that size anymore? The same thing happened with the Comanders I liked so much.

My good friend ordered the new E3s for his 09 Ultra Classic. The dealer won't balance them since they require 3.7 oz of weights. He called Jake Wilson and they will take them back and send a replacement set and no cost. It appears that the new tire for the HD line has had some problems. The dealer said that not only are they way out of balance but the front one is out of round. Just passing it on.

Is the Rear and Front Tire Valve Stem the same size? On my next Front Tire change, I would like to replace the Front with a right angle stem like the Back Tire

I've been struggling with a problem in my head and hope that some of you with experience pulling a trailer can help me. I understand the reasoning behind safety chains when towing a trailer with a car or truck. If the coupler slips off the ball, the tongue will be caught by the crossed chains and when the tow vehicle brakes are set, the trailers inertia will force the tongue under the bumper to the extent the chains allow before the braking will affect the forward momentum of the trailer. I had that happen one time when towing a U-haul across Texas over black ice. Take my word for it...that was a scary situation. Fortunately, I didn't have to change my shorts when all the excitement was over. They had mysteriously disappeared! Now to my struggle. In my mind's eye, I'm trying to picture exactly what would happen in a similar situation on a bike. It's not such a pretty thing. It seems to me that once brakes are applied on the bike, the tongue will move forward under the momentum of the trailer until the forward edge of the coupler makes contact with the rear tire. It would seem that when that contact occurs, the tire would pick up the tongue and force it into the bottom of the rear fender...repeatedly. Or worse, if there was enough force, it might even raise the back tire sufficiently to lose traction. It might even cause a vertical jack-knife. Now, I want to do some MC camping this fall and I'm committed to pulling this trailer. You can bet that I will check, double-check and recheck at every stop to make sure all is well. But, can anyone dispel my worst case scenarios?

Well here's a tale of caution for thems who ride.. We all know to inspect our tires and keep proper pressures for tire longevity and good handling. Mid May while on a road trip down to the US I95 I hit such a huge divot in the road that it literally threw my assets out of the seat (no easy feat considering my size) but I was able to control the bike and carry on. Didn't see it coming due to the thickness of traffic and concentrating on not getting nailed by kamikaze drivers.. The incident left me with a Works shock that required re-adjustment, but the bike still rode a little dodgy for a while and I ended up getting used to it but doing the Dragon's Tail and BRP didn't feel 100% like it used to.. Checked the neck and all was good, suspension was good.. etc.. Oh well I must be getting old.. The bike still rode fine on the highway, and parking lots but it was that 30-40 mph windy roads that felt dodgy.. Now it's time to replace the front tire, the wear bars are showing, I got me my new replacement E3 tire and lo and behold, an odd looking imperfection or damage to the front tire caught my attention.. I'd not seen it before when inspecting my wheels but there it was.. About thumb sized depression into the tread, slightly off the centre of the tire, and a couple more smaller ones near it.. VERY odd looking and oddly enough never noticed it before. But it was readily visible this time. Luckily I was getting that tire changed! My best guess is a broken belt or something from when I hit that huge divot in May.. and it's now almost July.. wow. Its not that I don't look at my tires or that the depression was 'slight', it simply never caught my eye before then.. (any ideas anyone what that is?) Now with the new tire on the bike, I haven't been able to tackle any corners that gave me problems before (need to scuff them up on dry roads.. and we gots nuttin but rains here).. but already I can tell the bike tracks a lot better and handles a lot better (not just from the new from old tire feel you get after changing tires out). I just wanted to share this with you to keep an eye on tires, feel them with your hands, by rubbing the dirt off the tire is how the depression showed up.. I wish I had taken a photo of it before getting it replaced though I don't know if it would have shown as well. Cheers

Almost time to replace the front tire on my '83 and since I am hauling a leaning sidecar around, I am considering changing width to see about improved handling. Who's done what and with what result. Pro's and con's? thanks!

I don't post much here, mainly just read other's posts but I'm on quite a bit. What concerns me is the last few days I see other riders having tire issues, Avon's with the sidewalls cracking and tire blow outs. I kind find it hard to believe that us riders are negligent on tire care such as inspecting them, and maintaining tire pressures ect. What is the consensus that perhaps like alot of things now that the quality of materials are lacking? I guess in the back of my mind I'm thinking that the costs of raw materials in today's society that manufactures are going the cheap route, and lack of proper quality controls to produce a good safe product. When I get back to Pa. my other bike will need tires and I'm concerned on what to get. I put the e3's on the venture two years ago and couldn't be happier with the bike. How old can tires actually be to actually be safe to use? I realize that tires have a manufacture date, and set on a shelf for a while, but how old before the safety factor comes into play? Any other's see a possible trend here? Thanks..

Hey Goose...I have gone through quite a few threads here on the Avons and even though there has been a problem with cracking, I bought them anyway because of the positive reports on handling and wear. I bought my set online from Jake Wilson...got them today. Looking at the date codes this is what I see... The front tire is: 02411MA and the rear tire is: 02403MA So does this mean the rear tire they sold me is 8 years old? Is this something I should be concerned with? It looks fine, but 8 years old seems a "tad" bit old considering the numbers of tires this company probably sells. One last quick question...I saw conflicting reports on wet weather handling on the Venoms...your actual opinion. Others feel free to leave opinions or comments too. Thanks... Wally

It is time to replace my rear tire. AS I have been looking around and planning to purchase a Metzler, I noticed there is a "stage 1" upgrade for RSV that changes the size of the tire to a Metzler 180/70hr-15. It states this goes on the same rim..... Is this true? Has anyone actually done this?? If you have done this does it make any difference good or bad? Any input would be greatly appreciated here as the tire needs to be replaced very soon. Thanks JM

YATT - Yet Another Tire Thread OK...really this one isn't about which is best. I'm getting ready for a trip to South Dakota and am shopping for new tires. I have a small cut in my front tire (very small) and was going to replace it anyway, but yesterday I got a flat on the back of my Dunlop Elite 3 tire. So this next go around I have decided I am going to buy some of the Avon Venom tires. But the problem lies in shopping at the various vendors...NO ONE has the same catalog numbers and even searching the manufacturers number will not find the tires. I have a 2009 RSV-s. I want to replace both the front and back on the bike. I have checked the following sites: Dennis Kirk - Found some Venoms once...then nothing now. Jake Wilson - manufacturer catalog number does not work. Southwest Moto - Not sure if these are the right ones. Dang CONFUSING is what it is.... Move over Superman.....cause BEER30 is here. What a trip going to MD. After leaving MD, Becky and I set off to Mass. to see the grandchildren. We survived the 3 days we spent with a 2 and 3 year old and love every moment of the visit. Then we left Mass. to the West Point Academy to visit a friend and business associate. On this leg of the journey, we encountered marble sized hail, heavy rain, 60 mph crosswinds. This mourning we had a dump truck 60 feet in front of us blow his driver's side rear tire. We were in the inside lane as he was in the outside lane. Road debris peppered us and chunks of the tire flew directly over our heads. Becky ducked right behind me when the tire went BOOM! We were doing slightly over 70 mph and the caged that was following swerved directly in front of us when the tire blew. When I heard and seen the tire blow, I immediately went hard on the brakes to abruptly slow down and then had to speed up enough to not have the tire chunks fall on top of us as well. Luckily there were no others riding our rear when it happened. It was like the Matrix, I tell ya ! Bike and Becky sustained no damage, nor the BEERCART. However I got a small piece of road debris stick in my right arm that annoyed me all day. Nothing that a beer couldn't take care of to say the least. The rest of the day was hot, and then severe rain off and on. We must have stopped and put on rain gear 4 times today. Finally arrived at home before 10:00 pm. Right at 3,000 miles from start to finish. Also in this post, I like to thank Freebird and the Mrs. and to all my friends (old and new) for the Great time at MD. BEER30

I replaced my tires with new E3's. The rear was almost shot so discarded it but I kept the front coz there's still lots of wear left. It's a Bridgestone Spitfire II. Now, my son has an '03 Sportster 1200 and his rear tire is shot. Turns out my front tire is the same size as his rear tire. The question is, can a guy put a front tire on the rear? ... and if so, should I change the rotation direction?

Hey, any tire pros, A Harley friend (Heritage) has asked me a question. I'm guessing she has HD Dunlop 404. She rides local and even did SC to CA last year, so she rides! Your input might help her. I've had so many problems with my front tire. Riding back and forth to work I heard a lot of road noise. New tire, this must be usual! After looking at the tire I noticed the rotation was going the wrong way. So now I need to know whether I should leave the tire as it is or do I have SOMEONE fix the issue. My main question is will the tire seperate like a car tire if you rotate it wrong? This is my front tire and I'm a bit WORRIED. I don't want to be going 80 mph and have a blow out. Thanks EVERYONE. I put a new front tire on the trike today, and while the front tire was off, I said to myself, what a perfect time to put a front fender rail on! Sooo, when I go over to Pioneer Motorsports to pick up the tire, I ask if they happen to have one in stock and they check and find yes they do have one in stock. We go to get it and we can't find it. Why?? Because Chad had already packed it in the trailer and when we ask about it, he tells me it is already promised to Freebird!!!!! Oh well, I will need to replace my front brakes before August anyway so maybe then...

Had flat tire morning after Marcarl's M&G on Sun. morning when I woke up.Called around to see who could put on tire in as quick of time as possible .Went to ZDENO Cycle in Kitchener Ont. Got it on lift and they said my rotor was really worn so \i said ok and had a used one from a wreck put on with new pads.Went with Metszler again. Was also told that the tire I had on was a HARLEY tire???????SO! tire$206 tire tax $5.84 instal $60 rotor $150 instal $20 pads $35 instal $30 tube $25 TOTAL SHOCK $600.97 Phantom Wife says that is budget for this year! Still going to MD this weekend!!!!!!!

Went out to eat, afterwards sitting on curb talking to wife noticed screw in back tire. Not leaking air so went strait home , easy like. Pulled out 2" screw it went in at angle middle of tire. Tire is a Avon Vemnon with 865 miles on it. Do you'all thing i could plug & patch. Just to get some wear out of it before replacing it? (good meal didn't settle to well go figuer) Larry
