  1. Let me make a long story short.....a couple of days after my mini rally held at Pioneer Motorsports, I stopped in to see michella to check with her and see that all was well with them and that we would be welcomed back again next year....Pioneer had another shindig going on and there was a raffle for 3 new motorcycle tires of your choice...Michella asked me if I put in for the raffle...I told her I just purchased a new tire from them 3 weeks earlier and that I wasn't interested..After a little bickering and badgering back and forth she (michelle) filled out a slip with my name on it ....that was that..... Today I get home and I have a new Elite 3 tire sitting at my front door...moral of story....I don't know what it is ,but I am very happy that a friend and fellow member took the time to fill out a slip for me and entered it in the raffle...she didn't have to do that as I buy ALL of my tires from them anyhow...thank you Dunlop and Michelle from Pioneer motorsports...Now I have to buy a matching front tire as I have always run Dunlop 404 www's on my bike..... OK, I have the moral of the story....don't be such a lazy a$$ when it comes to stuff like this, you gotta be in it to win it.... or..... it is nice to be surrounded by good friends who care about you...
  2. I picked up a screw in my rear tire (original Michelin Commander). I really like that tire, lots of miles left, can't find this tire anymore. I have plugged a roofing nail before on another tire, no problems. But this was a fair sized screw, dead center of tread, straight in. Tire is not torn but I don't trust a plug to keep air. Simple question,, is it safe to put a tube in the rear tire? (2006 RSTD stock size)
  3. One word,,,,,,, "Oh crap". Was crusing down I-20 with traffic at about 75 when the rear tire started getting squirlly. Pulled off just in time to pull in to a parking lot. Yep, flat rear, bolt in the tire. My son-in-law brought my trailer. As I was about to ride up the ramp he said,,,, "you sure you can make that angle?". I said yeah,,,, without really checking. You guessed it, the oil pan hit the trailer bed edge and knocked the oil plug 1/2 way out and broke open the bottom of the oil pan, setting up for a rapid oil drain. I will check with the dealer and look on Pinwall. But my dealer is great and likely will take it there. SO,,, Anyone got guesses on repair cost. I'm guessing the only damage is the oil pan it's self. Thanks, Mike G
  4. ok, so without getting into the brand too much, what are the recommendations for front tire size? which vendor? if theres a deal, i may get the rear. so which size rear also? should i change the front bearing with it? not sure if its ever been changed. 32k
  5. Just returned home from our weekend camping trip with the new-to-us tent trailer. Had to stick a plug in a nailhole in the rear tire just before we left. Fairly new Dunlop Elite 3 (appx 4500 miles on it). Checked the tire regularly during the trip and found it to be very hot after an hour or so riding. So hot in fact that I could not hold my hand on it very long and the wheel was even hotter. Running 39 lbs cold in the tire. The front tire was warm but not too warm and the trailer tires were about the same. I guess I had about 40lbs weight on the tongue and a light load on the bike. We did the whole trip (appx 800 kilometers) without issue but the tire was still quite hot each time I checked it. BTW, I have no idea how hot the tire might have been before this trip riding without the trailer. Any thoughts on this guys??
  6. Just bought a new Avon rear tire and had it mounted today. The shop that mounted it told me that the tire needed 2 oz. of weights to make it balanced and that was very unusual and he even suggested I got a bad tire. On a side note, he tried to sell me something called dynobeads?. Anyhow, is it true about a new tire being bad if it needs 2 oz of weights and what is dynobeads?
  7. I picked up a TREK 7000 mountain bike at an auction yesterday and it has the goofiest looking valve stems on the tires. I've never seen anything like these.... ever. They kinda have a double threaded stem, and the larger size looks smaller than what you normally find on a bike tire. Anyone know what these things are, and what kind of pump they take?? Pic attached...
  8. I have been agonizing over what to get for new tires. Avons have served me well for the last 9000 miles but it's time for new rubber. I have not had a cracking issue with the Avons like lots of others but it is a concern. Dunlop E 3's seem to be the number two choice. Last week I took the RSV to a friends place and we weighed the front and rear wheels separately. Here are the results. The bike weighed a total of 911#. This is with the typical accessories, trunk rack, bag guards, Passing lamps etc. Also basic tools, rain gear etc. that we all carry and 3/4 tank of gas. Out of that 911# the front was 382# and the rear 529#. Then I parked my 220# butt on the bike and did the tippy-toe thing for the next weights. 1,130# total, 446# front and 684# rear. Here is the interesting part, (and you have to assume that about 85-90% of the passenger weight and 100% of the bag and trunk weight goes on the rear tire) with a stock rear tire Dunlop 404-74H you have 143# left for passenger, luggage and stuff. Pretty close to the 419# GVWR. With a Dunlop E-3-77H you get an extra 81# or a total of 224# left over. Probably a safe number for most of us. Assuming that Manufactures leave a little fudge factor in the ratings, I still will be going with the Avon 80H to get that extra 84# over the E-3 for a total of 308# for passenger and extra stuff.
  9. I need to get new tire valves for my 02 RSMV. Does anyone know the size and vendor to get them from? I want 90 degree front and rear. I am going to mount the rear one facing the right side to make it easier to check and probably the same for the front. Thanks in advance!
  10. Well it was time to replace my rear tire. So with all the reading I have done on here I decided to go with the e3. I started checking around on prices, on line, and several dealers. Called Team Power Sports in Garner N.C. and got the best price. Got a new rear elite 3 Dyna Beads and installed on bike for just a hair less than $215.00. I don't think that was bad at all. They had the best price on the tire from the get go. The service writer told me after words, installation should have been more because it was a venture. Code date on tire 0511. Love this sight and ALL the useful information. Thanks Guys & Gals, Melvin
  11. Inspecting the bike in preparation for our 4 day weekend camping trip (putting our Leesure Lite trailer to it's firt test) into the interior of BC and what do I find??? ... a f&^%@ nail in my rear tire! New Elite III just over 4000 miles on it. Pulled the nail out and it's about a 2 inch brad. Decided to plug the hole coz it's pretty small ... waddya think? Am I gonna be good to go? (figgure I'll get a few conflicting responses to this Q ) If I have to replace the tire before we leave, it will set us back by at least a day and as a result, we may loose our camping spot. ggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
  12. Well I finished doing the rear tire change it was not bad easier than other bikes I've done. But I must say coming up with a way to get the bike lifted on the jack was the hardest part! I'm going to have to get me or make a lift adapter! New tire and checked the brakes and greased up everything now I'm ready to go!!!!!!!!
  13. OK,I am giving the "Darkside" a shot. I am doing this for two reasons,1: Ive read alot on different forums about blowouts on motorcycle this summer,Heat related?? I dont know. 2: Weight carrying capacity, on a Wing the ONLY MC tire that has a rear 992 LB rating is an Elite 3,The rest are 827LB..way too low in my opinion. Avg mileage on rear MC tires on a WING is 8-9000 miles,A Wing eats up tires. Ive ridden with alot of guys that are PEGSCRAPERS running Car Tires and watched the amount of tread intact with the ground and it is alot more than you think. I put mine on today, are there any differences? Yes but very Slight. You CAN feel a bit of roll going from straight down the road to a hard,REAL hard curve BUT it is ever so slight. The ride is way smoother than a MT and the 2 things that I like is....It is a Run-Flat tire AND 1201 LB rear tire rating. One reason I never tried it on the Venture is the amount of air pressure it takes to seat a Car Tire on a Venture,My opinion only is that was just to dangerous in MY eyes. The Goldwing is different,A car tire seats as easy as if you were installing on a car,no high pressures to seat it. I did not balance as I am running Centramatic Wheel balancers both front and rear. The ride is SILKY smooth as far as I ran it up to which was 113 MPH,then backed off. My speedometer was not affected, reading the same as it was with the motorcycle tire which is dead on accurate on the 2009/2010 models. The tire I am trying is a brand new Kumho 195/55/R16 Ecsta Run Flat. I will keep you informed on how I like it but so far A-OK................................. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING TO ANYONE ESPECIALLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM AS THE RUN FLAT TIRES CAN LOOSE AIR IF A NAIL OR WHATEVER GETS IN IT AND YOU WILL NOT KNOW IT FOR AWHILE UNLESS YOU MONITOR CLOSELY. THIS ALSO IS NOT ENDORSED BY ANYONE AT VENTURERIDER.ORG , JUST MY PERSONAL CHOICE.
  14. Good Day: I have an '07 Venture and was searching for the thickness specs of the brake rotors. (I found the specs for the 96-'01 Royal Stars, but not specific to the Venture.) I plan on replacing my front tire this weekend, and if I had to replace the rotors, I would do so at the same time. I have 19,700 miles on the bike. I already replaced the rear tire and brake pads around 14,000 miles. Thanks!
  15. The other day my son came home and when he parked the car he heard a tire going down. The next day I took off the tire and while rolling it to the pickup I could hear something inside the tire. The tire was cut and ruined, and while changing the tire we pulled out a yamaha combination #8 and #10 wrench. So if you were riding by my place spying on me, you can stop and get your wrench back!!!! I've seen lots of different stuff in tires, but never a wrench.
  16. I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with these No-Mar tire changing machines. I've gotten too old to do my tires on the floor anymore, and am looking at getting a floor mount tire changer. I started by looking at the Harbor Freight changer but they apparently don't import that anymore. Then, I found this company No-Mar. their stuff is pricier, but U.S. made, and looks to be much better quality. Just looking for any opinions before I borrow money to buy this machine.
  17. So I love my new bike (well new to me - 2008 RSTD) however I have the low speed heavy handling issue described here. It isn't real bad, but it does tend to want to dive to the inside on low speed turns and it is a little tough to keep straight coming up to a stop light without some wiggle room. I have checked the tire pressure, but have not checked the air in the suspension on either end. I have read that 0 PSI front and 25 PSI rear seems to be a common suggestion (along with 40PSI Front & 42 PSI Rear for tire pressure with Dunlops). I have read about changing the level links as a solution along with possibly changing the front tire to something a little narrower. Could someone explain what is going on here with the suspension and tire footprint? I get the tire pressure concept, but I don't understand how the suspension works i.e. air over shock, the level link change, and the narrow tire. Thanks very much.
  18. Anyone know what is a decent price for a Dunlop E3 front tire on a 99 RSV? I shucked my rear Metezler with 11k miles on my way to Sturdis. Now I don't trust my front Metezler and want to match the rear. Also where I live, no one handles a tire so a source would be good. Thanks Richard
  19. Bought the MCT from a forum member in the spring...I have had the trailer out a couple of times in the last few weeks getting use to it behind the RSV before taking off for South Dakota on the 3rd......Last weekend I noticed the right tire on the trailer was low/almost flat.....Filled it up to 55lbs and this AM noticed it was flat again. These are basically NEW tires...Previous owner never used the trailer...Ran some H2O over the tire and found a small..and I mean small leak in the middle of the tread...pinhole almost...Took it to get it plugged and an inside patch..Did I say me and the wife are L leaving for South Dakota on the 3rd) Question ???...in looking a the tire I noticed that these Stock Tires are 2 ply...I am concerned that if it picked up something this easy on a couple of test drives...Should I go out and invest in some 6 ply tires?.....Can pick up a couple at Tractor Supply for about $90-$100... I do have a spare in case one of the stock tires picks something up during the trip...... Long Tall Lynchburg, VA
  20. After over 4000 miles we have arrived safe and sound and a little poorer in the cash department! All in all it was a great trip with some interesting side lines to keep my on my toes. Blew the rear tire on the first leg down...60 miles out of Bismarck ND. No fall over for me this year but I dang near had a heart attack after seeing the tow bill! Then the dealer was good enough to get me on my way the next day. Good thing I was there as the poor tech was about to disassemble my rear end to get my tire off! For that and new brake shoes and oil change it came to over 400 bucks.....plus over 400 for the snow I mean tow job. Ah well....no-one got hurt right! After Cody we headed for Idaho to see some friends. Then off to Oregon, Washington and back this way through Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. First trip in years that we didnt get any rain! On a more somber note we did get to see the end result of a biker crashing into some sort of wild critter. Sadly we had to drive by his covered body. Our thoughts to his family. It was great to see everyone again and you all take care.
  21. Today I ended up on the side of the road in Virginia near exit 12. Front tire blew out, it was three in the afternoon and AMA roadside assistance expected me to know where to actually tow the bike to for a fix. I called my wife instead and she looked up shops online. Found a place called Stuart's Cycle Shop in Henderson NC. She called, and even though he is not open on Saturday, he came up to Virginia got the bike on a trailer and took me to his shop. He had tires in stock, fixed me up with an E3 and got me back on the road pretty quick. The charges were 60 for labor, 60 for pickup, and 139 for the tire. Considering that I would probably had to wait in a hotel until a regular shop opened again, I was more than pleased. He was a great guy to deal with, even had a good time swapping bike stories on the ride back to his shop.
  22. I am having my rear tire replaced this weekend. What final drive work should i have done while the wheel is off? I have heard that the rear splines need to be serviced. Is this a good time for that? Thanks Al
  23. I have a used (10k miles) Kumho tire that was on my used 2009 Venture when I bought it in September 2010. I replaced it with a MC tire. Tire is in fine shape and has been sitting in my carport since then. If you are in my area (mid-SC) and would use the tire for yourself, come get it. I figure a fair barter would be a 12 pack of cold bottled Bud. Tire should be good to let you know if you want to go dark side with little investment. Or good if you want to get the remaining 20k miles or so. Look on the classifieds under 2nd generation parts for my post. Mike G in SC mikeginsc@bellsouth.net Lugoff, SC, off I-20, exit 92
  24. My trailer weighs 156 lbs. It has 12 inch tires. It calls for 60 lbs of tire pressure Max. Since it will never weigh over 250 or 275 lbs loaded, should I run 60 lbs or can I run less air pressure? I don't want to run anymore than I need to be safe. Thanks Richard
  25. just curious, i found this tire listed on ebay Kenda Kruz k673, in rsv sizes, decent priced, anyone know anything about them or ever tried them, they claim to have a 20,000 mile warrenty ,, steve
