  1. Well I have finally finished my Bench Tester for TCI's. I can now take in anyone's TCI to test and give a report on the results. The test will consist of the following. 1. Test each input coil circuit to see that it activates the corresponding ignition coil output transistor in the TCI. 2. Test the circuit for the kickstand switch ensuring that it deactivates the TCI. 3. Test the circuit for the pressure switch making sure that it advances/retards the timing. 4. Test to see that each ignition coil is getting the proper voltage to energize. 5. Run tests at a simulated 900 RPM up to 6000 RPM at various speeds. I can bench test the TCI without taking it apart by unsoldering the motherboard from the case. I can also test the board even if it has been taken out of the case. I will do this testing for $30 (return postage extra). Any repairs would require taking out the board and replacing components as required. Pricing will depend on what components would be required but total cost above the $30 should be under $75 (postage extra) I just completed a repair for Rich at wera90ex@aol.com and he was quite happy with the results. (He said I could use his name as a reference.) I'm attaching a picture of my test rig which outputs to my scope. The picture shows an output from a good TCI running at about 1000 RPM. It shows a test for input coil #1 with the output going to ignition coil #1. It was very hard to get a good picture but this does show the output. Any queries about this testing can be sent to me at donb@MNSi.net Best regards to all Don Brechun Windsor, ON
  2. So, after 2 years of having a couple of local shops (with the same migrating staff) adjust carbs for poor fuel mileage and backfiring (particularly on deceleration), I went to another shop after they couldn't seem to fix the issues. He was asking a series of different questions about valve adjustments, etc that the other shops weren't. He said he wanted to do a leak down test...One reading was a wopping 83%. So, I understand I am in for a valve job after getting jerked around with carb adjustments for 2 years to try to fix my measely 200-250 km per tank and decel backfiring. The new-to-me shop is a one-man shop, charges a much more reasonable hourly rate than others I have been going to, and has been seemingly much more knowledgeable. One question...just because I am tired of being jerked around....what does a valve job on an 03 Venture generally go for? I understand between the leak-down test, the valve job and whatever else comes into play I am looking at the better part of 2500-3K. Thanks
  3. Thanks to Bill aka Wanna he figured out and helped me set up the relay so that the side markers will also blink/flash , they also work with the emergancy as well. the wires hanging were for my test before I button it up right. enjoy. Jeff
  4. Well I put a car tire on the wing yesterday. I must say I am impressed after 400 + miles I may try to find one for the blonde it handles the wet very well and is pretty responsive in the curves at highway speeds.all that's left to test in 100+ on the slabs. I will try to keep this updated as I work on wearing it out over the next couple months. Jeff
  5. I've been troubleshooting a Cruise control on an '06 Venture that I purchased used last October. The cruise has not worked at all for me. I followed the self diagnostic procedure in the service manual. Did the set anf res buttons 6 times, the lights blink correctly, but then only the res light stays on. Checked the brake switches, they're ok. Did the throttle test, but did not hear the vacuum pump come on. Hot wired the vacuum pump and it runs and draws vacuum. Did the cruise relay test and it passed. I'm left with checking the speed sensor (assume if the speedometer works, then the sensor works; may be a mistake), or replacing the cruise module. Has anyone had a similar experience, or got any advice? How much would a replacement cruise module cost? Your thoughts are appreciated. Frustrated in Ohio:confused07:

  7. This Is Alarming http://ca.f1100.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f23183%5fAIIIw0MAAEkUTq3BowycC3AvYo4&pid=2&fid=Inbox&inline=1 http://ca.f1100.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f23183%5fAIIIw0MAAEkUTq3BowycC3AvYo4&pid=3&fid=Inbox&inline=1 Beer contains female hormones! Yes, that's right, FEMALE hormones! Last month, Montreal University and scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption. The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain Phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women. http://ca.f1100.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f23183%5fAIIIw0MAAEkUTq3BowycC3AvYo4&pid=4&fid=Inbox&inline=1 To test the theory, 100 men each drank 8 schooners of beer within a one (1) hour period. http://ca.f1100.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f23183%5fAIIIw0MAAEkUTq3BowycC3AvYo4&pid=5&fid=Inbox&inline=1 It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects, yes, 100% of all these men: 1) Argued over nothing. 2) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong. 3) Gained weight. 4) Talked excessively without making sense. 5) Became overly emotional 6) Couldn't drive. 7) Failed to think rationally, and 8) Had to sit down while urinating. No further testing was considered necessary!! Send this to the men you know to warn them about drinking too much beer!
  8. Ok, have a 2001 RSV and with 85,000 miles I have always used high test gasoline thinking it gave it more power and better miliage, wrong, this is the thoughts of a majority of people includeing myself until SkyDoc enlightened me. The RSV was designed to run on 86 octain and not high test. Just made a trip 2 days ago from Va to St Louis, running 75 and 80 MPH just about all the way, I averaged 42.2 MPG with lowest 38.7 on one tank full. The bike also ran better, and smoother than it has ever ran, even the whinn sounds quiter. Just think of all the money I wasted on high test in those 85,000 miles at 30 cent more per gallon. So guys and gals, go to regular gasoline, it will make a very noticable differance to your advantage, again thank you SkyDoc. JB:dancefool:
  9. Took a test ride on an 08 RSV today and yes the whine is there. It wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. My question is : does this whine get worse as you place more load on the engine such as riding two up or pulling a trailer. Really liked the bike. Just wanted some info before I take the plunge. Thanks.
  10. I know a lot of us bike riders are kinda hard of hearing. My case is that and my wife has talked me into taking a hearing test. I have had a problem with this for a while now. To the point that I am having trouble at home and work understanding what people say. It is very embarrassing for me sometimes. I feel so stupid sometimes, but that is what I heard. So my question is for those that are wearing hearing aids and what should I get or do ? Brand, the most comfortable and the ones that really work. My hearing test is next Wednesday at 10:00 am. I will know more then. Just wanting to get a heads up from those who have been there and done this. Thank you in advance for your time and suggestions....... Please type loudly ... Loud pipes do save lives, and also hard on your hearing. Uuuuuh, Whattttt you Sayyy ? Fuzzy
  11. I think they felt sorry for an old man but this evening I passed my black belt test in Tae kwon do chung do kwon,I plan to continue on in that and also started in a hapkiddo class.
  12. so i ordered the larger pilot jets but just needed to see if I could find the screws and do the idle drop test to see if any of the pilots would not make a difference in rpm when turning them in. They all worked and it seemed that they were turned just about 2 1/2 turns from seated. i turned them out 1 full turn and re synched the carbs. they were off a bit. Felt better but tommorow morning will be the real test when starting from cold. how many turns out worked for you, did you eventually go with the larger pilots. with the larger pilots what setting should I used. how many turns out?
  13. Stolen from gl1800 board.
  14. Got my Venturedad trailer hitch in the mail today.... Took all of 5 minutes to put it on. Now I need to finish the wiring so I can take the trailer on a test run... Thanks for the quick turn-around Venturedad... Robert C.
  15. Hey, Snag, what have you heard of the guy who was killed the other day 'test riding' a motorcycle? The paper didn't say much beyond 'hitting a speed bump'.
  16. Got a postcard from the local Star dealer for a test ride on an 2011 Stryker. If you take the test ride you get a pair of Oakley sunglasses. The bike only had 3 miles on it.... well I fixed that. You really shouldn't tell me to "take it all afternoon if you want", because I want. It handled really well for the amount of frt rake. More than enough power for me and I didn't have to pay for fuel. It was a good day. Except I left Brenda at the showroom alone with all that "safety chrome" around for her Classic. It would have been cheaper to stay home and just by the Oakleys online. Below is the link to the test ride offer if anyone is interested. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/stryker_demo_promo.aspx
  17. Just looking to hear from some of the electrical gurus out here. Monkey Boy's '90 is having a charging issue and I went to check it out today. I did an AC voltage test on the stator and wanted to make sure I did it correctly. Bike running, negative lead of multimeter directly on the negative battery post. Tested each leg of the 3 wires and came up with 4 VAC on 1, 6.1 VAC on the 2nd and 11 VAC on the 3rd. In my head this is a bad stator that needs to be replaced, I'm just wanting to confirm this with more educated electrical brains. The battery was fully charged and installed right before I did the test....give me your opinions.
  18. is it possible to test TCI or the coils off the bike? If so...how? I've got my blonde torn apart (VERY apart!) which is VERY scary! Anybody in Ontario got an 83 that they would be willing to try my TCI on? How do you open it to see the condition of the diodes etc....cut it? you are gonna see a lot of that emoticon in the near future!
  19. To my knowledge, my cooling fan has never activated. Is it just not getting hot enough or is there a malfuntion? How can you test it? Thanks
  20. ok after getting parts from members on here and working in a hot storage shed i put the radiator and hoses back on the bike. just not sure how tight i got everything? i dont have much feeling in one of my hands i got all the clamps tight i hope? now just a quick and maybe dumb question? is it safe to test just useing water instead of anitfreeze? i can drain the water witht he drain valve if all looks good after the test and replace with proper antifeeze. as the cost of antifreeze just to watch it hit the floor can be a little bit expensive when your unemployed and on social security....
  21. I just picked up a '96 Royal Star with only 19k on it, bike is in great shape except for one thing... I have a pop through the exhaust. I suspected a lean cylinder and was right (on part of it) so off with the carbs for a thurough cleaning. I installed them back on yesterday and dialed everything in, huge difference in performance... but still had the pop. At idle its a rythmic; Pop.... Pop.... Pop.... Pop.... but goes away when revved and comes back again if the rpm is held constant. So today I checked that cylinders carb for any leaks or possible cause for this issue, nothing found. Plenty of fuel there. I went ahead and did a compression test on both right side cylinders and they seem low to me, or at least what the manual says they should be. Cylinder compression test shows 110psi on the front right and 125 on the rear right. Spark plug was wet on the front so I dried the cylinder out and cleaned the plug... same pop and same compression reading. After this I ran a leakdown test and im just a bit over 20% loss coming out of the exhaust valves! This afternoon I'll pop the valve cover and check the valve clearance but im afraid the damage has been done and the adjustment won't help. My question is, what is a normal compression reading for these engines? And can the heads come off without pulling the engine? Thanks for any help,
  22. History, 83 venture. PO battery junk and replaced with AGM dec09 from batterys plus. April 2010 battery blew up like basket ball(case swelled)-likely my fault, charged with auto battery charger at about 10A. Battery Plus honored warrenty and replaced april 2010 Currently working on electrical mods, and about 1 month testing on bike(key on, test, key off....)battery down to 10V, never any power problems during any testing. Mods done and working great, last night decided to charge (4A) and ride in AM. AM charger shows failure, key on and everything dead.(clock display on key off then disappears key on). V check battery=9V, amp check accross battery(20A scale)=.1A try to recharge, and computer charger detects fault and fails to start. Back to Batterys Plus, they test simular readings, are trying to recover battery but likely hopeless-not responding correctly to charger, warrenty expired, purchase new battery and tender(battery minder plus). If they manage to recover will be spare. pictured 1-battery using, 2-computerized charger using, 3- new tender Now the question, What could have caused the AGM to go completely dead overnight while on computerized charger, and it was fine power wise prior to charging? Do I need to be leary of my computerized charger? Fixing to go out and check key off load test, and amp test computer charger(on auto battery) to verify 2-4-6amp readings are correct. will post update. Not having much luck with AGMs, what am I doing wrong? update key off=.6mA charger at 2A=2.7A, at 4A=4.0A, at 6A=5.0A, charges for just 1 pulse then quickly detects complete charge and shuts down charge complete on all 3 cycles
  23. I'm looking for someone near Spencer, Ny that could look at a car for me. My daughter found a car she likes, but, it's in Spencer,Ny and we're in Michigan. If anyone could maybe test drive and look it over we'd be most greatful. Thanks, Jay
  24. Just found out tonight that our soon to be 31 year old daughter has 90 percent of having MS. She has lesions in her brain. She needs to have more test done to confirm if it is MS or not so please pray with us. Thank you, Hal n Val Cameron:fingers-crossed-emo
  25. 20 questions you might find on a learner's test for a driver's license ... could you pass with 100% ?? http://autos.ca.msn.com/editors-picks/gallery.aspx?cp-documentid=28010183&page=1 Well, I totally disagree with one of the answers ... which one do you think it is? Assuming I got that one right, then I got 2 wrong for a 90% .
