  1. I want to share with you the Tach Mount that Renne and his buddy made for me. I stopped at Renne's on the day we had the M&E in Minnesota. A thought I had an idea to mount my tach to the RSV. So said to Renne I wanted to pick his brain on how to mount the tach I had and I should him the tach and the piece of metal brought to show him what I was contemplating. Well he says set id down there I gotta a couple of ideas. Well a week later he calls be tells me my mount is done. We were going up to my bother-in-laws and so I had to go right by Renne's place so I stopped and here is what he came up with. (see pictures attached This was the poto-type mount so it is unpolished and anadized or any surface treatment. I am going to start polishing it with fine sandpaper then polishing cream. I will see how it comes out. I be liking it!!!!!!! 2. Hi there Peoples: I am wondering if anyone has installed the J&P Cycles riser and tach combo one is part # ZZ50825 I do believe its a 4" rise with a 1 1/2" pull back and the tach bolts on the top of handle bar keeper. I'm concerned that there may not be enough room for the tach with the fairing and all. Has anyone done this type of tach as an up grade.. Any help would be greatly appriciated..
  3. Digital tach group buy is now closed. Tachs have been shipped to members that ordered them on Monday, February 8, 2010. Gary ================================================================ I received the digital tach today that I had ordered from an ebay vendor. He sells these tachs in an auction style format and they vary widely in price. Prices for the last 6 on Ebay incl. First Class shipping were $21.19, $19.19, $17.69, $19.19, $34.69, $20.00 These tachs would be very useful when doing carb synching and adjusting the pilot air screws. He will sell me a bulk order of 20 or more for a fixed cost of $14.50 including shipping to me. The tach is 2" x 1 3/4" x 3/4" Mounting tab holes are 2 1/2" apart, 2 7/8" wide at tabs. Display digits are 3/8" tall. Over cable length is 66". There is about 12" of dual lead cable. One for spark plug sensor & one for ground. The tach can be set to read RPM's once every revolution, once every other revolution or twice per revolution. RPM display updates every second. Readout is to 99,999. First picture below shows how I received unit out of package. Last picture shows tach attached to my Dodge Ram. Bike is not even close to running at this point. Also tried on lawn mower and it worked great. All you have to do is coil black lead at end of cable around spark plug wire two or three times. It doesn't even have to be grounded to read RPM's. Prices below include shipping costs. (Qty 1) First class for 17.50 to U.S. (Qty 2) First class for 32.50 to U.S. (Qty 1) 2-3 day priority for 20.00 to U.S. (Qty 2) 2-3 day priority for 34.50 to U.S. (Qty 1) First class for 18.50 to Canada. (Qty 2) First class for 33.50 to Canada. (Qty 1) 6-10 day priority for 26.00 to Canada. (Qty 2) 6-10 day priority for 40.50 to Canada. I can get two units in first class mailer and 4 units in small priority box. I would recommend priority mailing. The packaging will be better, I can use USPS supplied box. And it is much quicker and I can get a USPS tracking number. I have recently seen first class mail take almost two weeks transit time. U.S. shipping is to lower 48 states. If you want one or more of these please respond to this thread, or you can PM me. Gary Red highlight below indicates I have received your payment. 1 LilBeaver 1 BigBoyinMS 1 KeithR 1 Pick 2 islandmech 1 Snaggletooth 1 Bubber 1 Sleeperhawk 1 jonsey 1 hlange 2 short-haul 1 bigbob 1 jlh3rd 1 Norm 1 Sling 1 Stud Muffin 1 wngrr 1 BJB 2 mbrood 1 rhncue 2 sleeepy2 1 colesgrandpa 1 RandyR 1 MiCarl 1 67mini67 1 Gibvel 1 dthomso1 1 genelegg 1 Pktexas 2 Bloodbrought1 2 guthdaddy17 1 herb in texas 1 Truckin48 1 Thom 2 Mabeline 2 warthogcrewchief 1 Eagle77 2 Beau-Kat
  4. Where do I find a gauge pod like the one that sold in the classifieds? That’s just what I am looking for to mount a tach and clock to go with the gauge set I’m getting from Ponch for the dash...............Ron Gauge Pod for 2nd Gen with tach and voltmeter
  5. Ok I got the new Bike home and I have a few Questions about the breaking in. It says in the manual not to give it more then 1/3 throttle for the first 600 Miles. Is there a certain speed not to go over? I've put 75 miles on it and I've had it up to 60 is that bad? There's no tach So I guess I can't keep it under certain RPMs. It's a new bike and I don't want to F*** it up by not breaking it in right. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  6. I have an '83 std Venture. When it's mid-30ish degrees or below, the tach is very sluggish and won't read above 3K rpm's. This concerns me because I currently commute an hour each way to work in mid to low 20 degrees. I found one other thread about this, but didn't see any conclusive fix. Is the tach mechanical, drive via cable from the drive train, or electronic, driven from the computer board in the dash? Does anyone have a good fix? Thank you!! Doug
  7. Has anybody installed a tach on an RSV. I had a first gen venture before and other bike also and always had a tach. The bike fills bare without one. I guess I'm from old school just have to have a tach. Anyway does anyone have one and can post pictures of it. I've looked in catalogs but just not sure what to get and what it would look like. We don't have to many bike shops here in Canada that carry to many accessories in stock so that I can have a look at one. And where is the best place top install it.
  8. Had half a day to spare today so thought I would continue cleaning up the VR. Started up first shot with a little choke, let it warm up for 5 minutes then it just quit. Restarted OK but immediately quit again. Started again but kept a bit more throttle on and the engine kept running but would cut out/slow down then pick up again. Without stalling, sometimes the tach would go direct to zero then back up again. Didn't have the tools handy or the time to start investigating but been thinking the jumping tach might be an indication there is something not right with the TCI. Could be just connections, I hope. Any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem would be greatly appreciated.
  9. First let me say that I am electrically challenged ( boy that was kind!). I saw a cheap tach at Harbor freight in their flyer (part # 98480) and I took a chance and bought it. I have attached the instructions and I have many questions that the paperwork did not answer. 1) Will it work on the Venture even if only as a tool for syncing the carbs. 2) Do you think it is a double pulse or a single pulse. (what do I need?) 3) If it is a single pulse can something be put in line to make it work. I have seen where Harleys require a electronic gizmo to put in line to make some tachs works 4) It can be used on a 4, 6, or 8 cylinder. Could I trick it and set it on 8 instead of 4 ???? Any help from you electronic Gurus would be a great help. Oh Ya.... What the heck is an "electronic signal point" as stated in the NOTE ? Remember I am electronically challenged to say the least. Tell me what else I should know about this before I hurt myself.... PLEASE Steve aka Bubber
  10. I purchased a 87 VR with 68K on Friday. The bike has been sitting for 5 years or better, last registered in 99. Went through the carbs over the weekend and she fired right up, sorta. At first I thought I had a dead charging system. I cleaned the connectors and now have 13.63 V going to a new battery. However, after pulling and cleaning a bunch of connectors, I have a dead tach. Re-checked everything and no luck. I also have a number one cylinder that is not pulling its weight. I will check valve clearence and do a compression test on that issue at a later time. The tach was working before, and I can't get the engine to respond to throttle input, I know the cylinder dragging is part of the issue, however it should slowly gain RPM's. Are there known issues with ECM's on these bikes? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I was a BMW / Kawasaki tech in a former life, but that was eons ago. Yams are a little greek to me. Looking forward to a long relationship with this particular bike. Once again, thanks for any hints. Longrider805
  11. I purchased the Baron's mini-bullet tach (BA-7573-00) with brake resivoir mount kit a couple weeks ago. This model has white LED backlighting only. The instructions were universal and pretty much pertained to HD intall. After e-mailing John and getting pertinant instructions (not found in the supplied paper work) I was on my way. There is a tech article here in VR on the installation, BUT there are a couple changes! The blue wire from the sigle fire ignition adaptor runs all the way to the rear coil's (either one) negative side. The black wire from the tach cannot be grounded to the coil bolt but another frame ground. After installation, the LED back light flickered randomly and the tach needle would fluctuate randomly. There seemed no correlation between the two. I regrounded the tach wire but no improvement. My next step will be to remove the red (tach power) and yellow (LED power) tach wires from the positive terminal of the front coil and connect to a switched 12V source. John's only other suggestion, if this failed, is to install a resistor. Any of you weekend mechanics or better yet a seasoned mechanic have any ideas? Within the last month I had a complete tune-up including carb sync.
  12. Now I know there is a whole section on connecting up a Tach but bear with me. I purchased a Sun Super Tach II (2 1/8 diameter for $15.00) and want to use it on my 2006 RSV. Now my question is this, I believe the Tach as it is will not work correctly on the bike as it will only read from the 1 coil it is connected to there by when it says 1,000 RPM the motor is really doing 4,000 RPM. What I need to know is the RSV considered a single fire setup because of the 4 individual coils? Now I found this info on building an adapter for mutli coil setup (picture attached). I priced out the diodes and they are around .02 cents each (in a lot of 100) and the resistors I figure can't be much more and a small box to put them in less then $5.00. My question here is will this work on the bike as a single fire adapter if there are 4 setups made and each connected as shown in the picture to the coils with the Tach set to the 4 cylinders setting. I have water proofed the Tach to the point of it floats but would be better off saying it's more water resistant not water proof. When I get this done I'll upload a PDF on how I made the Tach water resistant (a few O rings), fixed the mounting, and got it all to work.
  13. and does it work on our bikes (specifically 2nd Gen). ESI325 Inductive Tach Anyone use anything else besides a permanent bar/reservoir mounted tach?
  14. A few years ago, I tossed my old Tach & Dwell Meter. I thought 'what would I ever use it for now days'. So now I want to sync my carbs and need it for the Tach. I stopped by the local Harbor Frieght this morning to pick one up and they didn't have one. So, I figured before I start browsing the web for one, do any of you have a favorite? I don't see that I need anything 'fancy'. All I need is the engine RPM, so I don't want to pay much for just that. craigr
  15. I have been working on getting my '89 rebuilt and on the hiway. The problem I have is the tach and lights on the dash have quit working. Could it be one of the relays under the dash or do I have a bigger problem? Engine seems to run fine but the tach, volt meter and lights. Any help would be appreciated. Chuckles
  16. Eventually I will get all the bugs out of this thing. Was out for a ride after synching carbs and my tach started to bounce a little. About 30 miles later- everything went out- except the speedo. No tach, no computer, no voltage, no turn signals. The computer would start cycling through after a short time and the tach reappeared then the whole process started again. Now it's off more than it's on. Does the computer display board control everything? Should I be looking for a loose/dirty connector or could the board be bad? How hard is it to get to? My cruise went out as well. All lights come on when powered on, all turn off but power. Can't get set or resume light to come on or function. Thanks for all the advice. It's coming together. 86VR 22,000

where can I get a portable tach for checking the RPMS. to sink the carbs? 08 venture dont have a tach. I don't need to have it mounted on the bike, Just for shop use. Called O'reilly auto parts. They don't have aney thing that will work.
  18. Has anyone installed a MicroTach+ in their RSV 2nd Gen? http://www.speedwayinstruments.com/products/microtach.html While digging through my winter boxes (from Vstar to RSV) I found such a tach.. TC88 version.. If you've installed one, could you drop me a line? Cheers
  19. I just finished installing my Baron Tach on my 03 but I went a different route. After trying a minifaced tach, I wasn't too pleased with the looks plus it was so small, I had a hard time seeing it. This one was meant to install on a 1 in. handlebar but it also didn't fit right on the RSV because of limited space so I bought a Ram Mount # RAM-B-346CU which has a 1 in. ball to attach different accessories. I have all kinds of up, down, right and left adjustment. The face can be programmed with different colors and the green matches the speedo color pretty close. Check out the pix and let me know what you think. Brian
  20. I HAVE A 2007 ROYAL STAR TOUR DELUXE,I INSTALLED A SUNPRO SUPER TACH II.IN THE SUNPRO PAPER WORK IT STATES THAT IT WORKS ON SYSTEMS THAT DO NOT HAVE DISTRIBUTORS.WELL IT DOES BUT IT ONLY READS HALF THE RPMS. IF YOUR INTERESTED I CAN BE REACHED AT frank6087@hotmail.com I THINK THIS SHOULD WORK ON VENTURES ALSO BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN TESTED ON ONE. REMEBER MY SYSTEM IS TRANSISTORIZED ,4 COILS,AND NO DISTRIBUTOR
  21. I purchased a Morgan Carbtune last year. Great tool! I used to have to do my XS1100 often but was using a set of mercury gages. If someone needs help locally to sync their carbs maybe I can help. I've done mine a couple of times without a tach but I'll be ordering one soon so as not to be guessing at proper rpms. Dave Irwin, PA
  22. Just installed a volt meter, water temp gauge and tach so I thought I would post a few pics. I still have some clean-up of the install to do and finish putting the bike together. I removed the ignition switch and replaced it with a much smaller one in the seat pan facing backwards just over the rear shock schrader valve. I made the gauge pod with fiberglass and bondo. Painted it with bed liner. The temp sending unit and tach signal come from cylinder four. I removed the coolant plug and drilled and tapped it to fit the 1/8th" sending unit. The tach signal comes from the negative side of cylinder 4 coil. Power to the gauges comes from the positive side of the coil. Made for a nice neat cable run. The gauge lights are run off a switch on the front brake reservoir along with the driving lights. I removed the front right speaker to install the tach. I don't use the speakers so it won't be missed.
  23. It was about 4:30 this morning when I went to get on my bike to come to work. It was about 35 degrees, when I started it up I noticed the tach was not working. This is a first, as I rode in the tach started responding very slowly. By the time I made the 20 mile ride the tach was acting better but still slow to react. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen, wondering if the cold had something to do with it. Any thoughts?
  24. I don't have a tach and am curious to what kind of rpm's the 06 is turning at 70 mph. tks
  25. I am looking to buy a good but yet reasonably priced shop tach. I have looked at Harbor Freight but some of you have said they don't function well. I would be using mostly for Carb Syncing on my RSV. What is everyone else use? Thanks
