  1. Just wanted to post my "findings" for the benefit of anyone out there contemplating either or both of these "mods". Last year I installed new tires and went to a 130 front tire. I installed inexpensive tires as I did not want to invest a lot if I wasn't happy with the results. The purpose of this, as is well documented, was to improve low speed handling...which it did. For me, at least, the downside was poor tracking at speed (anything beyond "low speed"), especially at normal highway speeds. Cornering was fine. I then made and installed levelling links using information and specs herein. Didn't notice much difference considering I was already running a 130 front. However, as the rear tire wore down, the tracking became worse (which is pretty normal anyway as the rear tire flattens off) Last week I replaced both tires with Dunlop E3's, going back to stock 150 on the front. Went out for a couple good rides Saturday and Sunday, encountering pretty much every driving condition including some major construction areas where the pavement has been ripped up and patched and I am thoroughly happy with how the bike now handles. Low speed, parking lot maneuvers are easy, tracking at speed is very good, the twisties take very little effort and the bike does not jump all over on those patched up roadways. IMHO ... go with the levelling links instead of a 130 front tire (unless of course you are short in the leg) The levelling links will raise your scoot by appx 1 inch I believe. When I made mine, I altered that a bit and it's appx 1.5 inches taller at the rear. No problem for me with a 32" inseam.
  2. And its not hello you are welcome! 1987 venture royale, 126,000 miles. I put 12,000 miles the summer before with grin always plastered to face! Beautiful ride, love the cruise control and radio. Wanting to raise my idle speed this summer, I located what seemed the "general screw" after turning the throttle that would do this on the carbs. I upped the idle speed and to my horror the motor started to knock. I backed the screw to what I thought was the original position but the knock is still there and has stayed with me the rest of the summer. My mileage went for a dump big time, down from 175 miles/tank to 145/tank. The knock does not seem to be "location specific" ie.: one piston/left/right side. I can remember tuning cars (dad was a mechanic) in the seventies with the first emission cars where turning the distributor to set timing, you could induce knock. Have I inadvertently done this and how do I proceed to get rid of this? Tanx!
  3. I have recently been given an "88 Venture Royal , with 104k miles , and its been pulling a very heavy trailer on long trips . The guy said he was concerned about the milage , and its starting to make a little noise it 4th & 5th gears . In fact it makes a very loud gear whine in all gears , that changes with speed both pitch and volume . At 45mph and up , and holding a steady speed it is the worst . It goes away if you coast , gets quieter if you accelerate or decelerate . My first thought is pinion gear , which this thing has 2 of . And I can't tell if its motor end or final drive end . And it is leaking motor oil at the front drive shaft , and is definitely worse with a passenger . With the bike on it's center stand , and in gear , I can rotate the rear wheel 3 to 4 inches of play . What would be normal here ? I'm hoping for only the crush sleeves on the pinion shaft to be beat up / bad . Has anyone had any experience with this ?
  4. I made some leveling links per freebirds instructions and installed them Sunday. It's hard to believe such a small change can make such a huge differance, but it does. The one area I have been disapointed in with the RSV is the slow speed handeling. It has been a real chore in some instances. Well no more! The bike is more nimble and acually feels lighter while doing slow speed manuvers. I went from strugling to do a U-turn to being able to ride tight circles and figure 8s in tight quarters with little effort. I'm sure this will mean better handling in the twisties. I'll test the twisties this weekend. If you havent done this mod, DO IT!
  5. I see there are several brands of Speed Bleeders out there. Is there one brand that is recommended over all the others or are they pretty much the same. Thanks
  6. I need some help. I am trying to diagnose a problem that just developed with out having to tear the engine apart looking for something that I don't know what I am looking for. Yesterday, I was on the freeway going about fifty to sixty mph, getting up to speed. While at that speed, I heard a sound that SEEMS to be coming from the clutch and/or water pump area. It kind of sounds like loose metal rattling around. Pretty loud. Maybe a sound that it would make if it was starving of coolant or oil. When I get up to 70 mph, it seems to stop, although I can't tell if I just can't hear it because of the wind. This morning I took her out and the sound goes away when I pull in the clutch. But while the clutch is disengaged, if I rev the engine I still hear the noise. I hear no noise at all when it is idling in the driveway or going slowly. It shifts gears fine. I'm thinking it could be a water or oil pump issue and/or a clutch issue. I just don't know. I know I probably haven't given you enough to go on yet... but any ideas or things that I can check would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!! 1998 Royal Star TC XVZ13AT I really thank you for your time and thoughts!! 7. I thought this would be good for some to have. Good advise of the best way to ride in different situations. I like it and suppose some others would also. Some people just do not understand the safety issues involved in riding in a group or just a couple bikes. Please keep your speed and distance with the leader and the crowd. Do not be a slacker or a speed freak. It is really fun to enjoy a good ride and not have to worry so much about the process. Just click on the play buttons and check it out. Oh Ya,you can play PAC MAN after you have read it, bottom right corner. Neat stuff that someone has spent a lot of time on. http://www.sunsethog.com/groupRiding.html Fuzzy
  8. I am new to the venture world and am curious on what to expact as far as gas mileage. Around town i pretty much follow the speed limit but on the highway I sometimes get up to 80 or 85
  9. Got my new to me 2000 with 31k last fall and am needing to check valves and a carb sync (anyone in the area that may be able to help with the sync). Do you think these things could help with the little bit of popping I have on downshift. I also have been getting 32-35mpg no matter how i drive. I am one who likes speed but even when i have tried to drive easy 35mpg is all. Would there be more of a carb issue than the sync, etc. Thanks for your thoughts, Larry
  10. Damnit. I did my buddys clucth with the parts from shydoc_17 and all went well. . Well 2 weeks later I was riding my bike to my sister in laws house and the dang thing slipped in 5th gear while trying to pass, then again in 3rd gear but only when at high speed and trying to gain more speed at high rpm. I can take off from a light and blast through the gears with no problem. COme to think of it i just changed my oil to 20-50 valvoline MC oil.Whats going on?? Guess I got enough practice on his bike and now time to do my own.
  11. May 19, 2011 At approximately 11:28 hours this date an officer of the Traffic Management unit was conducting radar operations northbound on Municipal Road 80 near McCrae heights when he observed a Harley Davidson motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed southbound. The officer’s suspicions were confirmed by use of radar and a speed of 162 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone was obtained. (82 km/h over the speed limit). The vehicle was subsequently stopped and a 31 year old male with an M2 drivers licence from Hanmer has been charged with the following offences: • Stunt Driving – Driving in excess of 50 km/h over the speed limit • Speeding – 162 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone • Drive motor vehicle – no current validation (Plate expired in 2010) Traffic officers as well as uniform officers will continue to conduct radar enforcement to identify aggressive driving throughout the City of Greater Sudbury during Road Safety week.
  12. I posted this just after I got my 83 Venture royale last summer but couldn't remedy. Different year, same noise. If you saw the movie Dumb & Dumber, Jim carry's character asks," do you want to hear the most obnoxious sound ever?" Well mine is kind of like the sound he made. Like a prolonged chicken squawk. It starts at about 35 mph, it stops just as I come to a stop. It was really howling today (my second ride this year) so as I approached my house I pulled in the clutch and killed the motor. The noise again continued til I rolled to a stop. It is only one note no matter the engine speed or the ground speed. It does seem louder at times but that could be that the engine makes less noise at lower speed. I really like the bike except for this issue. I'm reluctant to spring for new tires and the starter clutch upgrade without knowing how serious this is. Thanks for any input. PS I can't imagine that the brakes could be the cause but tommorow I plan to pull the units off the wheel to make sure
  13. I updated the speed calculation sheet I had posted a while back. I can't find the thread so I started a new one. I added a feature to be able to display speeds in Kilometers/Hour. Also modified the tire size inputs a little. I got a new rear tire and found it was easier to measure circumference accurately than it was to measure diameter. Added correction factor for wheel slippage in each gear. The password to unlock the sheet is dingy if you are an excel guru and want to play with it. Only locked it as it is easier for user if only cells that need input are editable. Gary
  14. Speed Trap Maps. Information that we can all use. Speed trap map...this is pretty cool. This is for real.....in much detail. Even to the description of the Unmarked cars used for layering and ticketing in all states. Click on what ever state you want and then It will show the city or towns, click on which one you want to view. You can see them in the cities in the U.S. &/or Canada. Very interesting. I had no idea this was available to everyone. Do you know the speed-traps in your hometown? Click on the link below Http://www.speedtrap.org/
  15. A couple weeks ago we were at a show 'n shine car show and were approached by an agent for a production company to try out for a commercial. They were looking for a couple between 25 & 65 who ride motorcycle. He took some pics and video of Nina & I and about 2 days later we got a call for a screening. Did that and 2 days later we got a call that we were the "chosen ones". Turns out they'd looked at about 1,000 people! Yesterday was the shooting day. We had to be on set at 5:30AM but it took us an hour to get there, with at least 25 minutes of it on a single lane gravel road taking us way back into the boonies to a government campground. Had no idea what to expect but WOW... this was a major production. Must have been 100 or more crew there, production equipment and trucks all over the place, and a large catering truck with full breakfast all ready. Weather was cloudy and cool and by the time we arrived, the bike (and us) was totally covered with dust from the road. Speaking of which, I am amazed that we never dumped the bike... it was a lot of loose gravel, hilly, lots of curves, and washboardy, not to mention that we were in the dark and a bit behind other vehicles so the dust made it real hard to see. There were 3 shoot locations and nobody seemed to know exactly when or where "our part" came in so it was a "hurry up and wait" .... finally, around 11AM we were instructed to go to the next shoot location where they'd be filming us. Once there, they had us ride the bike down a long straight road (paved at least) while the filming truck ran alongside. We had to fall back, speed up, stay beside, and act as we would normally be while riding. We did this a couple times and then they had us follow the filming truck... riding up very close to the back, falling way back and speeding up real close to it again...then they'd pull over to the other lane and we'd speed past them...fall back ... speed past again... it was quite the experience! After that we went to the 3rd shooting location and did a bunch of "parked" filming. I was sitting on the bike and Nina would grab the helmets from the trunk, bring them over to me, we'd don the helmets, gloves and then she'd get on the bike. Did that scene about 6 or 8 times varying how we did it. It was a pretty "cool" experience and we finished up around 4:15PM and finally got home around 5PM, totally tired out. Got a few pics but haven't dumped them off the camera yet so will post them later. So, some day, when you least expect it, you just may see us and our RSMV on a Campbell's Soup commercial!!

  17. Now what do I do? Made a heck of a mistake and tried to use a socked instead of an open end wrench (7mm) which I didn't have and sheared off a speed bleeder on my clutch. Didn't have the room to use a socket and was applying too much side pressure. I thought I might be able to replace part of the line. I can't even see what needs to be replaced. If anyone has seen this situation before I would appreciate the help. Not sure if I can try to drill out the speed bleeder some how and then tap new threads. There is not much room to work. Not sure if shops can do this kind of work. Would really appreciate peoples suggestions if you have experience with this kind of thing. Have a trip planned and I have one more weekend to solve the problem or else I will have to cancel my trip over a stupid speed bleeder.
  18. I have temporarily disabled all signatures at the bottom of our posts. This is an effort to determine whether or not all the weather banners and other external links in signatures are causing any problems with server speed. The signatures have not been deleted and when I enable them again, they will be as you had them.
  19. for my 83 rear, plan on E3 and looking for MU90B16.(recommended from dunlop fitment guide) Dennis Kirk has a MU90HB16 listed here http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/search/search.jsp?searchString=mu90b16&store=&resultType=subCategories&x=13&y=7 Question, what is the H in MU90HB16?, For that matter would be interested to know what all the letter/number positions mean. Best I can tell from dunlop site info below is MU90=140/90 H=speed rating 130mph B=unk? 16=assume rim size? Without getting into tire type discussion, would this work on my scoot? 20. I was wondering what you cruise at on the highway when you are touring? All state and provincial speed limits aside; what do you normally cruise at or what is the RSV capable of cruising at for sustained periods of time? I like to cruise between 130 and 140 kph on the superslab and about 120 130 on the secondary roads. Is the RSV capable of 160 kph+? That would be 100mph+ or is that really pushing it's limits? I guess my second question is passing. Do you have to down shift in order to pass comfortably and if so does she have enough grunt to get around traffic with ease? Thanks for your comments in advance.
  21. Our youngest son, Jason, showed up for Thanksgiving on his new ride... He just got home from Afghanistan and couldn't wait another day to get a new ride. I tried to get him to buy a new RSTD, but as you can see, it didn't work. He still wants a sporty model with SPEED. If only I was younger...
  22. My wife drives an 2006 Malibu 4cyl auto. It is making a humming noise in the front end. I have rotated the tires, no change. jacked up and checked for any free play in both sides, nothing that i could feel. While still in the air with car in drive the noise is there and only changes with the speed of the wheels or vehicle speed. Don't think it is related to engine or trans cause the sound does not change with the rpm only wheel speed. The sound is not a clunking sound that I would think a bad cv joint but like the sound of big mud tires on a truck! Could it be a hub assembly going bad and not have any noticeable looseness? Any thought or help would be appreciated.
  23. Over the years, I've seen posts from several people who have claimed that the top speed on their RSV is about 90 MPH. I've never understood that and am now wondering how many here have bikes that top out around that speed. What got me thinking about this was that over the past months my bike was not running well. A couple of weeks ago, I opened it up and found that 90 MPH was all it would do. Now I had had mine to close to 120 MPH in the past so obviously something was wrong. Unfortunately, I got frustrated and took somewhat of a "shotgun" approach to the problem and so don't know just exactly what corrected my problem. I changed plugs but had done that before so I know it wasn't the problem. I also changed my number 3 coil which I think was breaking down under load. I pulled the carbs and reset the floats. One was a bit high. I also suspect that the air box was not seated good on top of at least one of the carbs. The bottom line is that when I was done, I took it out again and it runs like I knew it should. Acceleration is very strong and I took it up to about 112 and it was still climbing pretty good. I have the Speedohealer so that is true speed. I was later talking to my friend Bob Dakin and he told me that his Midnight Venture has never run faster than about 90 since the day that he bought it. I am convinced that there is a problem with his and he is going to come over one day soon so that we can figure it out. How many of YOU have the same problem? If your bike tops out under 100 MPH, I am sure that there is a problem and I don't think it would be that difficult to figure it out.
  24. I have a 1989 Yamaha Venture Royale with about 40000 miles on it. On a recent trip I noticed when I was in 4th or 5th gear and rolled on the throttle at highway speed the bike felt as though it slipped before takeing off. Any ideas of the cause?
