  1. I'm new to the Venture and new to the site and enjoy them both. ECK was kind enough to send an invitation to the Rome meet and eat. My wife and I were late but we made it; met some high qualty people for sure. I have many years riding, mostly on a Goldwing. The Venture is completely different and a joy to ride but my butt is killing me. I mean actual tail bone pain. I flew to Cleveland on Labor Day Weekend bought a 2006 RSV and rode back to Atlanta. Great ride but after 45 minutes to an hour I was really hurting. Just a few minutes off the seat and I would feel better but I've ridden some long hours on the wing, including 800 and 900 mile days, and never had this kind of discomfort. I guess I have three options from what I see on the site. The seat modification by one of the memebrs, an airhawk cushion, or a Corbin seat? I really don't want to spend the money on the corbin right now but something has to give. Again, I appreciate all the hospitality. Thanks in advance, Distance Rider
  2. Any one have/know of someone who has a pillowtop seat for a 99RSV??????????
  3. After coming back from PIP, I want to get the padding on my seat renewed. Is this the kind of thing that Rick Butler does (first Gen)?? How do I contact him? Is there somebody else that has done a good job?? Thanks, Frank
  4. There appears to be controversy about beaded seat covers. My wife would like to try one, and I will too. I note in some of the discussions that the beads will scratch the paint, so I want to make sure I get the right size. Has anyone bought a Bead Rider for an RSTD? What size? Dave
  5. New guy here, just picked up my 2009 RSTD S today. Traded in my 2003 HD Electra Glide Classic for it. Road 100 miles so far and here is what I learned. Shaft drive is not as smooth. Forgot that. But it is reliable. The RSTD does vibrate some when applying power up hills and accelerating. Feels like it is coming from the rear /shaft. RSTD gearing is a little lower in fifth. That was a surprise. The RSTD stock seat is horrible. 1 hour and we were sore. Thought about the Butler mod but ordered a Mustang seat instead. Liked the one I had on the Harley a lot. The RSTD engine is very car-like compared to the chug - chug Harley V-twin. Very smooth and lots of power (which I did not sample much as I am in the break in period). The pipes are really quiet - that's a change. The RSTD seems to have a little more rake in the front end and turns a little different, but very nice and balanced. The shifting is considerably smoother than the Harley. The RSTD display is cool. I like it and it functions well. I always thought the Harley Guages were a little boring. The RSTD suspension is better. Smoother and takes bumps better. The hard cases are much nicer on the RSTD. The lids don't come off! The RSTD windshield is way higher, which I like because I am tall. The RSTD is a much tighter machine all around. The Harley is something of a bucket of bolts, even when running well and in good repair. I look forward to sharing more as I get used to this bike. I have already learned a lot from this site. Hope I don;'t get the chirp!
  6. I'm sorry if this is a old subject but after a lot of looking around on the site I've not seen a thing about Back Braces, I'm sure I'm not the only rider out there that has a lower back ache after a few hours in the saddle?? I have a VStar 1100 Silverado that I put a Ortho Gell Pad in the seat and it did help a little but still after a few hours and a couple of days later my lower back ached terrible! I purchaced a 03 RSV a few months ago and it is a lot more comfortable than the VStar!! I've been looking and sent Rick Butler a personal message asking about making my present seat more comfortable, I've also been checking out the lower back braces, the KoolBak Motorcycle brace has some pretty good reviews. I'm sure that some of you guys/gals have a suggestion or opinion?? I had a 86 Venture about 20 years ago and I didn't seem to have the problem then, but, I'm 20 years older!!:shock3:thanks in advance for any ideas.. Larry M
  7. I have a very nice '99 RSV, but I am getting the most annoying rattle and vibration from the area of the backrest, speaker housing or trunk that I cannot identify. I've tightened every bolt and screw I can find, lubed the trunk lid hinges, removed and reinstalled everything from the front seat on back to the trunk, and still cannot find the source. I've had my wife sit backward on the rear seat while we rode up and down the street to try to isolate it, but even she can't nail it down. The speakers work OK at all volumes, so I don't think it's them, unless it's inside the housing itself. I'm stumped. Any ideas? Thanks.
  8. Has anyone used the ROHO Airhawk seat cushion??? If so, what'd you think?? I'm considering one......but would really appreciate some opinoins....Thanks!!

    seat repairs

I recently gave up my 1984 Gold Wing for a 01 RSV which is great; however the seams on the seat are giving way. Any suggestions for repair without having to lose the seat design. I have spoke with a couple of upholsterers but they say the work they do will flatten out the seats.
  10. On the way home from Vogel my rear seat cushion (seat) came off somewhere between the Florida line and Valdosta, GA. Does anyone out there have a passenger seat for a second gen? I need one. Ken:fingers-crossed-emo
  11. after much searching and reading It would appear that I'm shorter than most (5'7" with a 28" inseam). Is there anyone close to my size who has either the Ultimate or Mustang seat and if so, what are your views. I'm also interested to hear what your passengers think of these seats. thanks Greg:97:
  12. hey guys & ladys, just wanted to let you know that I have a compleat set of seats -taken off of my 05 - for sale. The driver seat has had the RICK BUTTLER touch- rick made it a little shorter for me and I like the way it sets. they are in good shape, the pass=seat has only about 500 butt miles:hurts: anyway, I got another seat I want to try so I'm going to sell these .. I probbley will wish I did't' cause rick did such a good job fixing it. If any one wants to talk about it just pm me. it is a pillow top. thanx jack
  13. The following report is in no way meant to tarnish a brand at all but my wife and I both feel it's important to give honest feedback so that people who use forums to educate themselves, get all the information possible to help the make decisions. I received the Ultimate seat late last Thursday and did the following rides, all with my wife on the back to test both seats properly. Friday we rode about 150 miles Saturday we rode about 200 miles Sunday we ride about 300 miles Monday (today) we rode about 100 miles Despite giving the seat lots of miles and different situations to give it a fair chance, here is why it's being returned. I don't like typing this because as a Canadian, I really wanted to buy and enjoy a seat that's made by a Canadian company. I realize that not everyone will like the same type of seat so this report is strictly what my wife and I experienced. My wife says the pillion is no better if not worse than the stock seat. Every day that we tested it, withing an hour or less she could feel the seams in the seat and felt like her butt bones were on the seat pan. Naturally this caused not only numb bum, but pain as well, long after each ride was done. I had a problem which came within 30 miles on each day of testing the seat. It caused me moderate to severe Sciatic pain on my left side and nothing I tried as far as seating and foot position made a difference. I also experienced the same numb bum and pain as my wife did but mine didn't last as long after each ride (cuz I'm tuffer than her ). The last time I experience this kind of pain on a bike was on my Goldwing which had 150,000 miles on the seat and my Doctor said that the pain I was experiencing was because the foam in the seat was collapsing and I was sitting on the seat pan. That's the exact feeling I have with the brand new Ultimate seat. The last thing is that although Ultimate advertises that their seat is the same seating position as the stock seat, it's at least an inch higher than the stock seat which is important to a short a$$ like me with a 28" inseam. We've had 3 Mustang seats in the past and have always been pleased with them. The reason with went with Ultimate this time was because of the seat height (Mustang is apparently 1" higher than stock) and because we wanted to buy Canadian because we'ed heard good things about Ultimate. We'll see tomorrow how good their money back guarantee is won't we. Anyway, still debating on the Mustang as I type this but suspect that I'll order a Mustang in the morning. Again, this is only our experience and we fully understand that lot's of people love their Ultimate seats. Greg
  14. I Need the air line that comes off the solenoid for the rear shock, The part that I need starts with the banjo bolt and goes to the coupler at the right side under the seat it's about 8" Long. Or I need a way to splice mine back together. Thanks
  15. i am working with an eBay seller (axe63) who makes very affordable backrests for various model Yamahas - however he does NOT make one for the RSTD. i told him i would post here, asking for someone on this forum to take a ride to him for him to take some measurements (would need to remove seat). if anyone is interested and can help please let me know and i'll get more details...thanks to all ! :-) Buz
  16. I know it's been said many time on here, but I would not feel right it I did not give Rick Kudos for working on my seat. We just returned from the international rally on Sunday (we took an extra week in Hot Springs) and there is no way I could have made that trip before getting my seat worked on. 16 days and 3,600 miles in all. I know that is not a lot for some people, but before getting the seat worked I had a hard time riding gas stop to gas stop. I would have to say that is now my favorite mod since getting the RSV 2 years ago. Also, it is probably the cheapest!
  17. Ive had my 88 venture about a month now, able to fix most of the minor glitches, so yesterday took it on a patriot guard mission of 400 miles, LI to Dover Delaware and back home, escorting a fallen marine L/Corporal. The bike performed well mechanically, but comfort level wasnt what i expected, i dont like the pegs, both legs were cramping after about 5 hr, right had was numb, and dont get me started on the stock seat. the seat and the hand cramps can be addressed, but does any body know if there is a footboard/ forward control rig for these bikes, thanks for listening. Frank
  18. Does anyone know where I could purchase a new seat covering for a 86-93 first gen? Are the available or do I need to take it out to a shop to be recovered?
  19. What are the best folding chairs to strap on a bike? My wife and I like to ride to concerts or sporting events with our bike but the bag chairs, although they pack well, are not the best seat. What have other folks found are good chairs that pack well? Iowa Guy
  20. Just listed Corbin Seat http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=2270
  21. I tore down the front shocks on my 87 Standard to replace the leaking fork seals. I had a heck of a time trying to get the wire retainer ring back in place. (just beneath the dust seal)...It seemed that I couldn't get either the top bushing or the seal to seat down far enough to leave room for the retainer wire. I pulled it apart again ( a few times ) to figure why they wouldn't seat far enough, until I got smart and compared the new seal to the old one, and found that the Pyramid brand seal was about 1/16" taller than the old one, which was just enough to keep the retainer wire from going in. I got another set from Bikebandit, which matched the originals perfectly, and the darn thing went right together. I got the Pyramid (green package) from e-bay. They looked good, but the little bit of added height was a killer. Hope this helps someone avoid the cornfusion I went through.
  22. Hey folks, I'm brand new to this site, as a matter of fact, this is my first thread. So, here's the first question I have. I am looking at purchasing a new Ultimate Seat for my 2007 RSTD, does anybody out there have this seat on their RSTD. Pros, and cons? Also, I am tossing around the idea of purchasing a center stand for my bike. Is Rivco the only manufacturer of one that fits the RSTD, or are there other less expensive alternatives? Pros, and cons please.
  23. Just saw this on eBay for anyone interested. It looks in great shape, and they are only asking $25. Just spreading the word. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-Yamaha-XVZ13TFL-Royal-Star-Venture-Rider-Seat_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem20accd1a04QQitemZ140338076164QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
  24. Does anyone have any suggestions for the passenger handgrips?? I am looking for something for the passenger to hang on to. I am changing seats to the Mustang, and the seat strap will be gone. Not that the existing seat strap is a great thing to hang onto. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My bike is a 2008 Royal Star tour deluxe.
  25. So...I'm torn between an Air Hawk seat cushion or a beaded seat cover. I live in Central Florida and ride the RSV to work in the morning when it's nice and cool. Often times, I have to ride between sites. When I get off the bike (because of the high high temps and humidity), my butt is soaked! Does the Air Hawk provided enough air flow to keep the "sweat factor" at a minimum? Or are the beaded seat covers really the way to go?
