  1. From my Nortons, to BMWer to HD I am hooked on the Royal Star engines. Thanks to all who helped me navigate the transition from my Road King to a roaring 4 cyl Yamaha. Three weeks ago I passed on the 03 Venture after trying a RSTD at the last minute mainly because of a heavy feeling on the Venture's steering. I was ready to lay the cash down on the Venture until the RSTD ride. Guess I wasn't used to the baggers and I ride mainly solo. Last week I located a 05 RSTD in CA that was a screamer with Krome Werks pipes, Kurykyn highway pegs, studde tank bra with pouch Mustang seats with driver back rest and OH YEA for the solo ride a studded single Ultimate seat with a carriage rack. I bought a Kuryakn Grantailgater I adore the many configuration the RSDT affords and above all love the high rpm this machine screams at. I don't have to wait till the cow come home like my V-Twins to get warmed and ready. Fourth gear really is an over drive and 5th a luxury. As for the chrips easily handled with rpm and never an issue other than it reminds you that you are lugging your machine. It's how you drive it. I did a 150 mile in the snow capped Sierras and this RSTD handle, shifted and responded like a German designed machine without the ugliness and it turned some serious uphill in ant hills. Hope there is room here for the RSTD machine Normax:cool10:
  2. Hey guys, Well I picked up an '03 Venture in Reno Thursday and rode it back to Conifer CO to live at my g/f's house. I live in FL but I spend about 4-5 days a month in CO....needed another bike to ride when I'm here. The riding out here is phenominal! The ride 'home' was a beautiful route, took US50/I70 east. It was colder than I bargained for, hit snow twice. 20 degrees warmer would have made it a great ride. This bike loves the open road...nice tall O/D, cruised at 90-95 a bunch and she seems to love it. I was also impressed with her performance in the wind. It was very gusty in the Western Range, but I hardly noticed on the RSV. Impression of the bike so far.... I really like the riding position, more stretched out than alot of similar bikes. More versatile than some as far as foot placement. I like the clutch/trans. I like the wind protection. I'm happy with the handling. It looks great. Power...so so. I tend to compare it to my old Valkerie, another big bike...instant smooth speed. The Valk did drink gas like a fish. Braking...not that impressed, but I'll chalk that up to getting used to a new bike and the sheer size of this baby. So jury is out for now. I'm generally happy with everything...except one thing that I'll be working on. I knew about the whine going in, but it's worse than I anticipated. Due to the temps I wore a full-face helmet, so it didn't seem that bad. I usually wear a shorty, and once I got back to warmer temps and shed the full-face for the shorty it sounded way worse. My Valk had straight gears and a whine too. Synthetic oil made a world of difference on that bike. I'm hoping it'll help with Venture too. I'll be scouring the forum for tips and info. After being out today, I have a feeling this bike is worse than average. It has 65K on it, and I believe it was well maintained. I know it had a new clutch a couple of years ago, I need to dig into the maintenance records and see the details. If there was a factory fix I would think it would have been done at that time. Anyhow, glad to be one of Y'all now! Ride on! Chris
  3. Okay..well I'm 2250 miles away from my bikes, but just want to wish you all a very Happy Easter !
  4. Any one up for a ride saturday morning?
  5. I wasn't going to do a trip thread this time, since this is a lot like what I did last year, but Karen doesn't visit this site much, and needs to know where to look to find me. So here goes... Bike is already loaded. Planning to leave from work tomorrow afternoon and riding down to Rick Haywood and Shirley's for a little BS'n and maybe a few beers, and a place to crash. Wednesday's plan is to head south to Sparta, IL to visit an antique engine collector and then get near (but not into) Memphis for the night. Thursday's plan is a ride over to SW Arkansas and spend the night at Playboy's place. Friday's plan is to ride with Playboy to the SE TX MD at Kregerdoodle's and maybe stop and see another antique engine collection in Tatum, TX along the way. Planning to stay at the MD till Sunday morning. Then it's off to Luckenbach for Sunday afternoon music, probably ride around the hills Monday and spend another night in Luckenbach. (I really enjoyed Luckenbach last year, can ya tell ) Probably start heading back northerly on Tuesday morning, and wander my way back towards home the rest of the week. Maybe see you on the road, Scooter Bob
  6. I just got back from meeting alazzurra aka Tim Mobley, he is in Atlanta for business and while here he purchased a 93 Venture. He was in need of some headsets for it, and I had posted about having a couple of sets for sale and he got the 2nd set. He was really excited about getting his first 1st Gen. He did it because his wife wasn't comfortable on his Ducati... Great new member looking forward to meeting up with him again, he lives in Memphis, and his son is also a patient at St. Jude. I expect we will be seeing them in Oct. when we make our yearly ride to St. Jude. Please give him a warm welcome.:clap2:
  7. Just as an fyi .... maybe the Forum could make good use of a "Ride Reports" Section ... just a thought Left Tulsa at around 5 pm Friday headed for Lincoln, Nebraska. Completely uneventful ride apart from two small things. First ... somewhere on HWY 75 there is a STOP sign. As I approached, the whole front end of the bike started vibrating, felt like it was falling off so I stopped. Then I heard another car doing it and I laughed when I realised it was embedded speed bumps that were not clearly visible in the growing gloom. I checked the bike anyway. http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/DSCN0364.jpg Arrived in Lincoln at around midnight, found Motel and got a good nights sleep. I'm not going to describe the Rally I was on, a Rally Report will come later and I didn't finish. The other issue I was having was that the windshield is still too tall to comfortably see over ... it needs to lose another inch, and that adds an amount of strain to night riding that I can manage without given the number of hours I ride in the dark. On the plus side, the HID Projector is utterly awesome! Next morning, 8.00 am had me heading out, next stop Cheyenne, WY, about 480 miles. http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/DSCN0365.jpg That is a replica of the Liberty Bell, which I guess saves the good citizens of Wyoming a trip to Philly. From there the rest of the day was spent heading South. Leaving Wyoming and heading down I 25 all the way through Colorado. Never seen the Rockies before and I got to see them all day, just sitting quietly on my right still covered in snow. Left the Interstate to go visit the Federal Maximum Security Penitentiary in Florence. That got me off the busy highway and onto 38 miles of awesome twisties through the mountains. The VR handled it all with it's usual competence. Never felt concerned, never put a tyre wrong, didn't hesitate. It just ran and ran and ran. http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/DSCN0366.jpg Leaving the jail I had another 30 miles, or so, back to the Interstate on different roads, a different landscape. Narrow road but wide open, empty and very fast. That was a lot of fun, and would have been even better had I not been in quite so much pain! When I set out the night before it became clear that I hadn't fully recovered from the 1500 miles two weeks earlier. My back was aching, and my butt was worse. By now I was in agony so I stopped in Pueblo, CO and dragged the laptop out on a garage forecourt to look at routing options. There weren't any, I had to carry on. I went as far as Trinidad, CO, and found a Motel 8 for the night. It was midnight and I had covered 800 miles for the day. At this point I was 550 miles from home. I chatted with the Rally Master and figured that if I could get away by 2.30 am I could still get back to Tulsa by 2 pm Central, and qualify as a Finisher. Set the clock for two hours sleep. Woke up, couldn't move, my back was in complete spasm and I couldn't even sit up. So I did what everyone else would have done. I turned off the alarm clock and got four more hours sleep Left around 7 am MT feeling much better. I was still in a considerable amount of pain, but now I was "off the clock", so I could relax and take my time getting home. Home seemed a long way away. Rode through some incredible scenery out of Colorado and into New Mexico ... Just fabulous. There was no traffic, just me and the bike and the road. Then I saw the deer poop on the Interstate!!! Not only do deer get onto the main highway through Colorado, they have time to stop and poop while they do it. Part of my plan was a visit to the Capulin Volcano. I wanted to save miles but the volcano is only three miles off the direct route, and I was damn well not coming this far and missing it. http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/DSCN0367.jpg http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/DSCN0372.jpg That was the highlight ... The road up is, shall we say, interesting. Stick it in second, get to 20 mph and cruise to the top. Easy. After that I drove into the Oklahoma Panhandle and stuck it at 65 mph, hit the cruise control and did the next 400 miles. Yeah, I stooped, a lot. Just a few minutes at a time for McDonalds coffee, or just to walk around and try to relive the sore butt and the burning pain across my shoulders. Here is the tale: (This does not show the 400 mile ride from Home to Lincoln) http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/DSCN0388.jpg The Speed and Elevation Graphs show other interesting stuff. For a start, you can see where my average speed dropped significantly from a 70+ average to about 10 mph less when I took myself off the clock to cruise home. http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/SpeedandElevation.jpg Gas mileage figures are equally telling. On the ride across Nebraska and down Colorado I was hitting the speed limit most of the way (around 75 mph). From there to home I slowed to about 65 mph. The gas mileage was mid twenties on the first half, and mid to high thirties when I slowed (and lost elevation). My home is at 600 feet, the high point was eight thousand feet. Route: http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/RallyRoute.jpg Home ... Tired, hurting, happy http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/twigg2324/April%20Fools%20Rall/DSCN0389.jpg Postscript: I have an older Saddlemen Road Sofa on the bike, and the VentureLine Back Rest. They are good for about five hundred miles which, in the field of motorcycle seats, is very good. However, they are not good enough for multiple one thousand mile days, they don't even come close. The answer is a Russell Day-Long, but I can't afford one. I am working with the LD Riders on a solution, and I'll let you know when I have it cracked. I will fix this because in July I need to be fit to ride about 4500 miles in 100 hours, and I can't do that on my current set-up. On the other hand, I rode through six States and 1700 miles in 48 hours. Apart from the discomfort, it was a truly fabulous trip. There are more pics in the album
  8. Has anyone rode the route from Seattle WA to Las Vegas NV. Via (Seattle, Yakima, Kennewick, Bosie, Twin Falls, Las Vegas). Might be taking a ride around the June / July time frame. Whats the gas station situation like between Twin Falls Idaho to Las Vegas NV. I'd love to try that 1000 Butt ride thing, but probably won't for I'd probably fall asleep riding. My wife said she won't ride that far looking directly into the back of my helmet or constantly turning from side to side. She'll go by air. That be fine with me for I can make better time. Less potty brakes and rest stops.
  9. what ashame after it went so well and for a great cause.http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/04/02/3143313/two-dead-in-motorcycle-wreck-at.html
  10. I am leaving on Thursday with a group of friends to ride down to Nogales AZ to pick up US 89 and ride it back North. We will be gone 10 days and end this segment in Springville UT then pick up the North segment in Sept. This is my 1st real ride on the trike and the 1st since the wreck last June.Needless to say I am a little nervous but I am so excited I can hardly wait,I wish we were leaving tomorrow.
  11. Installed a Speedohealer on my RSTD this morning. I began the process about 10:15 with a quick ride with the GPS to verify my indicated speed vs actual speed. I found I was 6 MPH off at 60. (60 actual but indicated 66) Returned to my garage and installed the unit. Really easy. I had the installation done by 11AM, programmed the unit and went for a ride. After a couple of minor tweaks, my speedometer is spot on with my Garmin GPS. It's so nice to know I'm running the speed that's indicated on the speedometer. I would certainly recommend this mod to others interested in seeing the proper speed displayed rather than estimating where they think they are. Great product and easy install. Ride safe.
  12. I rebuilt the front forks and swapped out the mushy stock springs with Progressives. Instead of using the supplied PVC spacer, I used the stock spacer/piston (with a new O-Ring). I also replaced the damper washers (two wavy and one flat per shock), upper and lower bushings, fork seals and plate seats (which btw have been discontinued....), fork cap O-Rings, EAND O-Rings, and air manifold O-Rings. Also mounted a new rear tire, replaced all 6 brake pads, wired the bike for trailer lights on my Voyager kit, lubed the rear shock links, replaced the windshield, repaired the left saddle bag (fiber glassed some cracks...), replaced the stock H4 Halogen head lamp with a Silver Star H4, lubed all the cables, replaced the front chrome trim moldings, re-charged the Class desiccant, replaced the CLASS manifold O-Rings, and put dielectric grease into every connector I could find.... Took the bike out for a check ride this afternoon, and man is it SWEET!!! Rides like a new bike now. Got back to the house to put the Voyager kit on and that's when the rain started. Got just enough rain to make the roads (and my new back yard) a mess, so we didn't get to ride this evening. Tomorrow should be a good day to ride, so color us GONE!!!!
  13. I got the 91 Kawi Voyager here and the po put a new back Pirelli Route66 tire on it and it came with a new same front tire to be installed, anyone have an opinion on these tires since I have never had them. I took it for a ride and it starts and runs awsome but it needs cosmetic work, he also said that he put new progressive springs in, now that being said when I took it for a ride the front end felt like ice cream in the turns that is how I can explain it. I checked the air pressure in the tire and it was good I am wondering if he did something wrong, I don't know alot about the Kawi in terms of working on it and am wondering if someone can help me on the front end issue also. Tom
  14. So I replaced my springs with progressives and this is what came out. None of the instructions referenced this piece. Maybe someone might want to referenced this in the Progressive instructions for new comers so it does not throw them like it did me. So when I removed the 17mm cap, picture 1 is what I saw. When I removed it as I pull picture 1 thing out the 4 inch spacer can along with it. After the 4 inch spacer then I pulled the flat washer with the collar. I pulled this thing of picture 1 off the 4 inch spacer. It came off kinda of hard but because the instructions/picture did not show it to discard I put it back in. Also because it had the O-ring I thought it was of some signifcant so I used it. Well I tryed to add the 1/2 inch ABS spacer and it was almost impossible to put the 17mm cap on. So I discard the ABS Spacer. This thing of picture 1 is about 1 inch in length with the flat washer. My 1st ride was pretty stiff. I removed this thing of picture 1 and replaced it with the 1/2 inch spacer with the washer collar. This morning I went a 2nd ride of the same course. Ride is still stiff, there might have been a very very slight improvement. This evening I'm going to remove the 1/2 ABS spacer, maybe I should also remove the washer too. Don't like the idea of the end of the spring butting up against the 17mm cap. At 173 lb, guess I'm a light weight. I sure hope the ride softens up some with no spacers. Oh I have a 91 VR. So for those who need to use a 1 inch spacer, rather than using 1 inch of ABS spacer you might consider the below. This is how I installed it for my 1st ride. Progressive Spring with the tight coil down 1st. Flat washer with the coller going inside the thing of picture 1. then the 17mm cap.
  15. For those who have installed Progressive Springs in their MKII, I have a few questions. I need to readjust my spacer length and so I'd like to come as close as I can to the perfect desired ride. I love what the progressive does to the handeling of my MKII, but mine is way too stiff. I would like to use a spacer size that would be the most appropiate for my 170 lbs(birthday suit). I rarely ride double and my storage trunks are pretty much empty. I would allow 10 to 15 lbs of stuff all together in my storage trunks. No Gas Tank Bag. I'm usually a one day rider so I travel pretty light. What length spacer do you use? What wt fork oil What length of non oil space did you leave after compressing your forks. Whats your weight? Hows soft and smooth is your ride? Would you like to use a different length spacer, or oil wt and why?
  16. This dosnt look to safe to me, but thats not stopping them. Dont know if this has been posted before but first time I saw it and had to share http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v405/Hazenson/2011/420577_3401428592219_1164948955_4484021_1843981844_n.jpg
  17. Our local police force as decided on Victory brand for their new police motorcycles. We are unsure why they chose Victory so far as we do not have a dealer for them anywhere that does not require a 2 hour ferry ride and a good commute to get to. Victory had made the proposal with the offer to train a local dealership... who all bid against them... to service the new bikes. http://www.google.ca/imgres?q=victory+police+motorcycles&hl=en&biw=1162&bih=667&gbv=2&tbm=isch&tbnid=a8eusDhLnjViCM:&imgrefurl=http://www.policemotorunits.com/id272.html&docid=9HLl686JowN9EM&imgurl=http://www.policemotorunits.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/webassets/.pond/VictoryPMPhoto201.jpg.w560h420.jpg&w=560&h=420&ei=zw5tT75s0sqJAs6_hcAF&zoom=1
  18. While we were marching on Rome, my stepson, Sean went for a 'bout 100 mile ride with a friend. They both ride the rattlecan brand, 'xcept hers is new and his is a customized job (barhopper). I'm told they were hitting 80-90 mph and turning of on the exit for home his bike died - totally, No loose battery connection or out of gas, just dead. Now his friends are saying the bike wasn't built for that kind of riding and that it was the ethanol at those speeds.:confused07::confused24: We probably all agree that ethanol is not good for most any engine other then a racecar maybe, but I've never heard of a bike flat out dying because it was driving too fast for the type of fuel you buy. Oh yeah, the "friends" are saying he should only buy plain gas, which of course would really turn this puppy in a bar hopper. So, I'm calling BS. (in spite of the fact that it's a Harley)
  19. Hey all! I'm a prospective Venture owner, I ride a V-Star 1100 now. The favorite big cruiser I've had before was a Valk Tourer....other than crappy gas mileage it was an awesome bike. I've already picked up a lot of good info by lurking but I'm looking for some opinions on wind protection for the rider before I pull the trigger on the Venture I'm looking at...it's a long distance purchase and my g/f won't be able to go for a test ride. My g/f likes to ride (she'd be history if she didn't!) but she's a bit of a wimp when it comes to the wind. I know, irritating, but if I keep her happy she'll ride more and I'll be a happy. She's only ridden my V* and an Ultra Glide that we've rented a few times. She loved the HD, but she says she gets murdered by the wind on the Yamaha....it's a silverado with the stock windshield. I really debated between a Road Star and the Venture...I do love a V-twin. I think I'll be happy with either. I think the Road Star would be very similar to the V-star on wind, although I'm sure I could tweek the windshield adjustment to get it better. However I think I've made up my mind to go with the Venture so we can do more long distance riding. She'll be more comfortable, and I have to admit, that cushy driver seat looks pretty inviting to me too. Finally my question....anyone in a position to offer a comparison between the Ultra and the RSV as far as back-seater wind protection? Any opinions welcome. Thanks, Chris
  20. How does something so small mess up a wonderful day of riding. 69 degrees here in Charlotte and I can not see for more than a few moments before the tears make it difficult to see. These little particles of pollen are killing my only day to ride for a while and I'm not happy. Medicine is not touching the nose, sinus cavity or eyes...... Here is what it says locally: http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayPollen.asp?Zipcode=28214 Final Word....... THIS STINKS! I hope someone is enjoying the day. Ride a few extra miles for me.
  21. I got the C.R.A.B.S. Can't Ride A Bike Syndrome I'm a confessed bike addict and literally ride every day. But, I haven't ridden a bike in over 5 weeks! However, I really do have such a good reason. After a year of extensive paperwork and travel, my wife and I just adopted our 16 month old son, Simon Joseph. He is considered special needs - Albinism. He is just beautiful! We are in our early 50s and have four grown children. So, we are starting over. I'm gonna try to attach his photo. Rusty
  22. Had first ride (2000 Roadstar 1600) with wife and another couple today. Went to Anna Mae's for supper. Was a 160klm ride. Yes I said it rite=== Phantom Wife=== even suggested the ride!!! Imagine that--almost had heart attack. Still complains about being uncomfortable and sore after ridding----misses the COUCH(87 Venture) so it is still possible being able to buy a new bike this tear. Still don't know which bike I would like to get. Bikes I'm looking at are --Venture---Harley Electra Glide Ultra---Kawasaki Voyager---Road Glide Ultra--- and Cross Country Touring. Right now price isn't a factor until we start pricing for financing / comfort of rear seat for wife/ warranty / maintenance/ and other things.
  23. Taking my two year old son, Simon, for his daily ride around the neighborhood. He officially started his riding career at 19 months old. I had to make a peg for his left foot to rest on. His right foot rests on the air cleaner. By watching me, he has taught himself to: Pull out the choke, press the starter until the engine fires, twist the throttle, blow the horn (alot), turn on the turn signals, and then use the kill switch when our ride is over. Rusty
  24. Left shoulder surgery tomorrow. Just wanted to warn everybody that I will be aggravating you all for quite some time again. No work or ride for the last 8 weeks and now after surgery, 3 - 6 months recovery. So no work and ride either and I am sick already. I have my new bars and SS lines on that I can not try and a trip planned and going to miss Don's Maintenance day. Well shoot, oh well. I am blessed and I realize that, but dog gone it, it really really really sucks getting old. I need to learn that when I am working that I am not able to do as I always have. Well I have time to get some computer work done. Adding to Don's Member Vendor list and going to try to sell a few Stinger Flagpole Mounts that I have been working on and to help me and the PGR riders out a little. I have a guy in or next to Kenova,WV building me up a few. Then also a friend nearby to help when needed. Then I am painting and taking care of the rest. The steel and is going to be the biggest factor I believe,so expensive. Well so consider yourselves warned that I am going to be lurking about for a long while. Please come visit me here. Thanks all for your cares and prayers. Fuzzy :thumbsup2:
