  1. The moneypit has about 87000 miles on it. Is there a time limit on the life of the stator? Will be painting starting this weekend, and want to know if I should replace it before putting the bike back together. Also, is there anything else I should look at while it's stripped down? Any advice?
  2. So a couple weeks ago I broke down on a trip and a local shop replaced the ECU/ignitor on my Kawasaki Vucan. After replacing the unit they discovered the source of the problem was that some of the wires under the tank (lots of engine heat) cracked open or broke and shorted out the ECU. So in order to get me on my way without any more delay they spliced wires into the harness. Everything has been fine so far but before I paid the bill the service manager let me know that because the entire wiring harness was not replaced it was possible that the problem could recurr at some time and recomended that I have the harness replaced when I get home. So the question is: Bite the bullet and have local dealer replace the harness or Replace the harness myself or Try to redo the repair by soldering in replacement wires and insulating or ? This was an $800.00 repair and I am of limited $$ I appreciate all advice from you folks as you have saved my bacon more than once getting my old 83 Venture back up and going.
  3. Question: ??? OK, I have a Corbin Seat for my Busa. I like the Shape of the seat, but its just to Darn Hard !! Only good for about 2 hours of rideing ( even at Busa Speeds !! ) I bought it on E-Bay, for a good price, so I don't have a fortune invested in the thing. I'm looking at the seat, and realize it won't be to hard to remove the Cover ( which is very good material ) and Replace whatever padding material is in there. Anybody out there have the Answer as to What type of Material I should try to use to replace the inner padding material with. Foam rubber, ?? What type ?? Where to get it ?? Is there a someplace on line that sells Seat padding material ?? I'm all Ears, if anybody has any suggestions -----
  4. Hello to all and a big thank you in advance for the replies to my questions. I have an 84 venture royale and need to have the seat reapolstered so I am wondering, is the seat so comfortable due to the ergonomics of the seat or the cushioning:icon_smile_question So when I have er redone should I replace the cushioning as well and if so what cushioning should be used:icon_smile_question Thanks again and keep the rubber on the road. Michael
  5. I was wondering if anyone has a list of the bulbs used in the indicators and illumination for the dash on the 83 venture. I am looking at opening it up to replace a couple of dead dash lights and might as well replace them all while i am in there.
  6. I hope I am inserting my question in the right location and will have someone reply with an answer. Who manufactures aftermarket antennas (one for the cb and the other for am/fm reception) that will just replace the two overly long stock antennas on my 88VR? I, too, have a severe problem rolling in or out of my garage because the antennas are way to high. Heck, I have even broke a couple flourescent bulbs in my overhead lighting. I could care less if they both must be completely removed or if they don't fold down like the stockers. If some knows what I can replace them both with that are much shorter, please advise model number and where I can order them. masterguns
  7. ... and need some ideas on what I could do. I believe the console is from an MKII and the Venture Cruise light is in the tach on my installed console. Why would I want to change tachs? Well, my installed speedo is irrepairable and need to replace it with the one I got from Poledar. The guage colors are different between both consoles (Poledars looks better too). So to match the guages, I would need to replace all the guages. Now since the Venture Cruise light location will need to be moved, will I need to add that center console (between the handlebars)? Will the current wiring on my 85 work with the center console? I do not even know what is on the center console as lights. So, what can I do y'all? Btw, Poledar is a great person to work with. Gotta give him some kuddos as he has been great with me. Thanks,
  8. I have a 89 VR, want to replace brake pads front and rear. Where should I get the pads and do I need to do anything to the rotors before the install
  9. ... my god. has anyone tackled this one. I don't even wanna go there without about 30 digital pictures along the way. hell, i could've just been a neurosurgeon or something. seriously, i would appreciate any tips or advise. the only other engine guard i've replace was on a silverado 1100 and i did it in the driveway without even letting the wife know i had a crash. this thing is INTEGRATED with hoses, wires, moldings, etc, etc, etc... unbelievable. I guess that'll teach me to lay it down huh!!!!
  10. Looking for a replacement right rear crash bar for an RSV - the chrome crash bar right in front of the right saddlebag. Mine still has some road rash on the lower corner after my wreck last year, so now I would like to replace it. Anyone know of a good one available at a nice price? Thanx! Goose
  11. I am rebuilding the forks on my '87 VR and I am going to replace the springs with with Progressives. I found them on Dennis Kirks's for $77.99. Should I order seals also? My front brake pads are soaked with fork oil and I don't know what kind to replace them with. My questions are: What weight oil? How much oil? What kind of brake pads? Thanks, Kevin
  12. Can the front forks on the first gen be dropped far enough to replace the lower bearing without removing the fairing? I will have the front tire off for replacement. It looks possible. Might have to disconnect the air line etc. Or if I remove the calipers, fender and the electrical for the anti-dive I think the whole fork assembly might drop out. Related thought on the waddle/wobble/shimmy. There are 2 isolation bushings for the handlebars. Look to be built like shock bushing. Any chance that the rubber in these goes soft? Possibly need to replace these with a delrin bushing/steel sleeve assembly. Might get a bit more vibration but the wiggle factor would be reduced. Will a standard motorcycle lift work on the 1st gen? I haven't had one under mine to check alignment. Will I need hockey pucks etc. to make the jack clear? JB
  13. I am looking for tips on how to replace blown speaker, thanks
  14. My insurance contacted me and said WRITE OFF.Bike value $3795can. My amount with deductible taken off (my pocket take home ) $3800 They get bike. If I keep bike $2700. They don't care about other things I put on(doesn't add to value)New tire $275/light bar $100/ Rotor covers$150/oil filter adapter $80. Will replace helmet even tho I don't have receipt if I cut off straps. Not sure if they will replace rain suit/gloves and boots if I don't have receipts. Wife wants me to leave bike and get the $3800 and get another. I think I should keep and get another close so I have spares and new parts. Seen 2-85s and 86 for under $3000can.One has under 36000klms. so keeping my bike could help out in future. Have only till tomorrow morning as insurance won't pay for storage any longer and I have to pickup(no problem as I have trailer that I can use) Any help----advice???????
  15. Ok, I replaced the battery a few weeks ago and started the bike. The starter stuck on! I had a couple of fuses that blew as a result of that. My low beam and tail light bulbs blew as well. I tore everything apart, replaced fuses and light bulbs and all is well, but.... I get no sound from my radio. I have unplugged all the large connectors and plugged them back in, nothing. At first the controller light up, but now that doesn't even light up. Is there a fuse somewhere specifically for the radio that any of you are aware of? If not I'm afraid maybe the radio brain blew with the power surge. If you all have any ideas for me that would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been able to find one either for a descent price, so I'm hoping I don't have to replace this one. I also hate to put the bike back together just to tear it apart to replace the radio. Thanks for all your help guys! Brent
  16. I finally got around to washing the bike after dropping it on the way home from Don's. I found that hidden under the squashed bugs, I damaged the chrome trim piece around the headlight. Not really bad but I need to replace it. Anyone have one? I'll be checking ebay as well as my thief ..I mean dealer, since I have to replace the visors and get a few extras for the rear directionals and tail light. Not sure what the dealers charge, but I hate dealing with him so I'll be looking for other places.
  17. I'm gathering information to help my uncle get his '83 1200 Venture Royale running. He bought it sight-unseen. It has 65,000 miles on it, and he doesn't know when it ran last. I know very little about Yammy's, only what I've been able to find in the forums so far. His service manual is on it's way. We'll learn much more then. My husband will be helping as well. The trick in helping to work on it is that we live three hours apart. We've got three days over Mem Day weekend. Can we get enough done for it to run in three days? We'll find out. We'll drain the carb bowls. We know not to use carb cleaner. We'll drain the fuel tank and clean it, and check to make sure the petcock isn't leaking. We'll run Seafoam through with the first tank of fresh gas. Do we need to plan to replace all the fuel lines? Do they degrade on the interior of the lines like old Wings do? We'll replace the fuel filter, wherever that is. We'll drain the coolant and replace it with fresh red coolant mixture. Should we pull the radiator? Should we replace the hoses and thermostat then? Does the engine use a timing chain? It'd be nice not to worry about timing belts. We'll change the oil and filter. We'll put the bike on the center stand and turn the rear wheel to see if the engine turns. Hope it does, don't know what to do if it doesn't. We'll likely pull the rear wheel to grease the spline. The one on our Wing was dry, so I'm assuming the Venture's will probably be dry too. We'll make sure the rear end has enough diff oil in it. The beast IS shaft-driven, isn't it? What do we do if second gear isn't working any more? Can I whine if we have to mess with the transmission? Do we add transmission fluid? How do we check that? I hope that's in the manual. Bound to be. We'll check the brakes and fluid. We'll replace the battery. He said the tires don't look dry rotted. We'll check them again really well. I think the shocks are air adjustable. I don't really know what that means, not having that sort of shocks on any of our bikes. We'll need to find out if they can be re-pumped-up and how to do that. They kind of bottom out when he sits in the saddle. Is the fuel tank under the seat? It looked like it when I saw the bike. How's the center of gravity? I worry about the weight of the bike for him. That sucker's HEAVY. It's a good hundred pounds heavier than my Wing, and the Wing's flat out cumbersome. He just want's to get running enough for him to ride it, then think about cosmetic stuff later. Did I miss any initial must-do's? Is this the right forum? I don't know the generations. I thought maybe it's a second gen because it's not the inline four engine.
  18. OK, it's only new to me. Just traded my '01 wing for a '99 Venture. A guy in my riding club had wanted my wing since I got it. He had purchased the Venture last year and just wasn't up to handling it, had dropped it several times at walking speeds. Anyway, I have a couple cages that need work and needed cash and he made an offer I couldn't refuse. Another member of the club rides a Cream colored Venture and really loves it so I thought I'd be ok. And I love it! It does have it's problems though. It really "flops" over at parking lot speeds. I'm going to replace the front tire, the current one is really worn (a 150?! wow) I also plan to add a wider handlebar for leverage. Has anyone replaced theirs? I could use a suggestion or two. It also dawned on me that it would probably help to replace the steering head bearing with tapered rollers. Does anyone have experience with that procedure? Maybe a part #? I know I'm asking a lot for a first day member but having read a couple hundred other letters in the forum I feel someone out there will have the answers. I'm looking forward to a long and fruitfull membership in your group. Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.
  19. I have an '84 Vebture Royale. The front tire is wearing more on the right side than the left. This does not seem possible to me. I need a new tire but I don't want to replace it yntil I find out why the tire is wearing this way.
  20. I'm looking to replace tires on my rsv. I have looked at the bridgestones... Anyone have a good choice. Need a good ride Thanks
  21. I now have Ride on Tire sealant in my Tires with air.My Question is what will happen if I take out the valve and replace the air with nitrogen ? Anything ? Will the sealant leak and make a mess ? Has anyone done this ? Thanks in advance. Bucky Thompson
  22. I have just about decided part of the problems that I'm having with my ride is the battery. It is 5 years old and I'm going to replace it. Decision? There are several types from gel to AGM to normal batteries. Any thoughts?
  23. Well I took a rock in the headlight today while I was out enjoying my ride on my 2006 midnight venture, I know Yamaha wants a small fortune to replace our headlights, is there a cheaper alternative and what is involved in replacing it? Patrick.
  24. Is there some sort of plastic/soft rubber cover available for the ventures? I noticed I have a small rock chip/hole in my new to me bike, and thought it might be cheaper to put one of those on than to replace the glass on the headlight. Does anyone have them and do they work....or just get cloudy and hard after a short while? Thanks.
  25. I going to replace the motor in my 84. It is starting to have problems in second gear. Second gear still works but it jumps under hard throttle. So sooner or later I'm going to put a new motor in her. I really don't have the time to tear down the motor to repair the tran's. I can replace a motor in about three days. I was wondering what range of years can I replace with?? Can a 1300 be exchanged to a 1200 frame?? I beleave after 85 they took care of the second gear problem , is this correct?? Thanks Kurt
