  1. Well I finished doing the rear tire change it was not bad easier than other bikes I've done. But I must say coming up with a way to get the bike lifted on the jack was the hardest part! I'm going to have to get me or make a lift adapter! New tire and checked the brakes and greased up everything now I'm ready to go!!!!!!!!
  2. hi all glad i found this org. this my first post. i have a 83 venture and i want to add some rear running lights and a second licence plate flashing brake light so the 4 wheelers can see me. i want to go with leds do you think they wont draw to much from the electrical if i just splice onto the tail light wiring? thanks for any help
  3. A guy on my STAR forum has a black & white 1998 RSTC (nice looking, added Venture package). He is lookin for wide white walls, he is only finding Dunlop 404 www and Brigstone www. (I think the sizes are: front 150/80/16 and rear 150/90/15) Anyone know of more choices to fit that bike? Thanks, Mike G in SC
  4. Has anyone tried the Custom Dynamics cluster in rear signal housing? Has turn/brake/running light in one cluster so your turn signal acts as running light/brake/turn signal. http://www.customdynamics.com/motorc...c_clusters.htm
  5. Noticed a while back that it seems like the rear of my Venture "feels" lower. Got another bike and wasn't sure if it was just my imagination or not. Then a buddy who I was riding behind asked if my headlight was on bright (it wasn't). Tried adjusting the headlight, hadn't before, but it still seemed the headlight was high, which would be right if the rear was low. Checked the rear shock but saw no fluid leakage, aired it up and it held, at least for a while. The shock was replaced about a year ago, had puked its guts out, can't really remember any change after the shock was replaced, but not sure. Bikes still under warrenty, an 08, think I'm going to depanel a little and see what I can see. Any ideas? Thanks, Sam
  6. Joyce & I were heading for one of our local restaurants tonight and got rear ended by a young girl either going to fast and not paying attention or being distracted in some way. The only good thing was we were in our car instead of on the bike tonight. Joyce had twisted her ankle earlier in the day so was limping thus we took the car. We had stopped for a traffic light and as it turned green I started to go and that was when she rammed her car into the back of my Kia Sorento. Even then it broke loose my spare tire from under the car and hit with enough force to flatten the bumper & bend my Curt hitch. It did a number on her car taking the entire front out. It could have been worse I think if I hadn't been moving. Joyce did go to emergency to have her neck checked as she got a bit of whiplash. Docs are saying bruised muscles. I think she'll be sore in the morning. One can't ever be vigilant enought it seems. Larry
  7. my rear blinkers are not flashing. the front ones work fine. when i use the blinker either to left or right my brake light flashes and the blinkers dont ??? whats the problem and where do i start? thanks in advance steve
  8. I had to pull the rear wheel again because the dealer didn't clean the rim good enough so the tire was slowly leaking. Anyhow i realized that i didn't grease the pins the last time so I had another reason for taking it a part again. Anyhow, the pins were pretty rusty. I cleaned them up with some fine sandpaper. Anything else to do other than moly paste? Do you or can you clean out the bushings? thanks, Larry
  9. Anyone know what is a decent price for a Dunlop E3 front tire on a 99 RSV? I shucked my rear Metezler with 11k miles on my way to Sturdis. Now I don't trust my front Metezler and want to match the rear. Also where I live, no one handles a tire so a source would be good. Thanks Richard
  10. So, Trying to figure out some things on my '05. What is the typical expected life for the Brake Pads. I replaced the rears 2 years ago and now have put on 14,000 Kms (yup Canadian Eh!) on this set of rear brake pads. They were EDC FB??? for the dealer. Sounding like on the rear, the caliper is not fully releasing in the past few days? Grease to the brake pistons required? No pads on the front since I became the owner of this unit. Getting a squeaking noise from the fronts now, so thinking it's time. Total mileage on the scooter is 50,500 Kms. Any feedback (and I know I will get your thoughts) is appreciated.
  11. I recently had my stock Bridgestone rear tire changed to a Dunlop E3 due to wear (17k km) but left the stock Bridgestone on the front since it still has about 1/2 the tread left. In this configuration I'm finding a big improvement in slow speed handling. I know someone recently mentioned Avon front/Dunlop rear but even with Bridgestone front/Dunlop rear I'm feeling the improvement. If it gets better when I replace the front with a Dunlop E3 in about 10k km... great !
  12. Just changed the rear tire and confused about the assembly of the spacers on the rear wheel. I read the posts on the tech pages about the spacers but I have a thick spacer not shown in those photos. I've highlighted it below. Where does it go? (I have the nut and washer for the other side) http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/gaillarry/VentureAxleSpacers-1.jpg
  13. Well, I got the paperwork all done and now I’m the proud owner of a 1989 Venture. I started looking at it about a week ago and found this site through my son, who is already a venture rider(second gen.) and member. I read through the first 35 pages of the first gen. forum, and found all sorts of good information. Now about the Venture. It has 56K miles, and all the leather is in very good shape. The trunk, saddle boxes, faring and windshield are in very good condition. The dash has some areas where the screw holes are broken off, and some of the vent louvers are broken or missing especially by the motor. The collector ‘rattles’ on start-up, but goes away after a couple of minutes, I can live with that for awhile. It has a Dunlap 491 on the front and a Avon venom on the rear, air pressures are good and the casting whiskers are still visible near the outside of the tread area. All of the electronics seem to be working, except for the CLASS, which has the E-4 problem. I have an electrical/mechanical background and the information posted on about page 12, of the ‘first gen. forum’, gave me the information I need to get that repaired.(Thanks) The water resistant paper on the amplifier ‘road noise pick-up mike’ is damaged, so if someone knows of a replacement product, that would help. Using the Schrader Valves mounted on the right rear fender, I found the rear shock pressure at 40 psi. and the front at 0 psi. I reduced the rear to 15, and increased the front to 15. (When I checked the pressure for the forks, oil leaked from the Schrader valve.) The pressures have been holding steady for about an hour. I will probably have to purge the air line back into the forks. The dampener is set on 4 and I will reduce this to 1 because I will be riding ‘1 up’ for awhile. (BTW- somewhere in the forum was a tip to put a 2 by 4 under the rear tire to help in getting up onto the center stand, I don’t think I could have done it any other way. A 2 by 6 by 16” is now part of the tool kit in my right saddle box.) The previous owner kept the fuel valve in the reserve position, is that a good idea? I used to ride,, back-in-the-day , early 70’s. I had a ‘65’ 650Triumph Bonneville when I was single and in the Navy on the west coast. This Venture is a little bigger and I am a little older so it will take some time to get comfortable and confident again. rod
  14. Just bought an 06 VMax front wheel for the bike. It will somewhat match the rear VMax design (rear needs painted this winter) Whadda ya think. I am over the top yet?? 1st picture, as it sits now. 2nd picture is new rim, I think I will use the red rotors. 3rd is of rear rim style as it sits now. Gary
  15. After over 4000 miles we have arrived safe and sound and a little poorer in the cash department! All in all it was a great trip with some interesting side lines to keep my on my toes. Blew the rear tire on the first leg down...60 miles out of Bismarck ND. No fall over for me this year but I dang near had a heart attack after seeing the tow bill! Then the dealer was good enough to get me on my way the next day. Good thing I was there as the poor tech was about to disassemble my rear end to get my tire off! For that and new brake shoes and oil change it came to over 400 bucks.....plus over 400 for the snow I mean tow job. Ah well....no-one got hurt right! After Cody we headed for Idaho to see some friends. Then off to Oregon, Washington and back this way through Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. First trip in years that we didnt get any rain! On a more somber note we did get to see the end result of a biker crashing into some sort of wild critter. Sadly we had to drive by his covered body. Our thoughts to his family. It was great to see everyone again and you all take care.
  16. I am having my rear tire replaced this weekend. What final drive work should i have done while the wheel is off? I have heard that the rear splines need to be serviced. Is this a good time for that? Thanks Al
  17. I've been bleeding the rear/front brakes for a week and still not much difference.Today I did it again...and if I "pump "them up ,I have good brakes until I get stopped...but when I go to use the foot brake again, say within a block,...NOTHING!!!(or very little). There's no leaks...replaced all brake pads (used kevlar pads) rebuilt rear caliper...put speed bleeders all around..Disc thickness is .331 (plenty thick) ran a 1/2 qt of fluid thru the system????? It did feel like the brakes were fading off as I held them down...(This is on my 84 venture)The only thing I can think of next is to rebuild/replace the rear master cyl.The repair manual says to replace the proportioning valve when yor rebuild the master cyl...anyone else have this much trouble?????
  18. I have been working the 12 "death march" shift at my new job, and after getting off of work Wednesday afternoon, I stopped at the "New" Wal Mart in the area to pick up a gallon of milk. I cruised into the parking lot, in no big hurry, and pulled thru the first parking space into the second diagonal space so I could pull straight out after my shopping was done. Stopped the bike, put down the kick stand, pulled the key from the ignition, and was just about to get off of the bike when a Lifted Ford F250 slammed right into the rear of my 87'VR! The impact shot my bike about 30 feet from the parking spot, the bike was in neutral, and I was able to get my hands on the handle bars and keep her upright. The Ventureline Backrest basically "saved my bacon", it kept me from being flipped off of the seat, and kept the sheared off trunk from hitting me in the back. I was not able to ride the bike home, and it was roll backed to the local Yamaha Dealer. The young man driving the truck was shocked beyond comprehension, he kept apologizing over and over again. He said he just didn't see my 7 foot long, 51/2 high full bagger motorcycle setting in a parking space! It was so hot, 101F, and I was so tired, I couldn't hardly be mad, BUT I was bumbed. The bike will come home Tuesday, the dealer and Ins. Company want to total the bike. I will not let that happen. The Ins. Adjuster has agreed to let me take a run at restoring the bike. Needless to say, If anyone has a trunk or rear baggage lids for the Elegant/Birch Brown 1987 Venture Royale, I would love to speak with you. I will post some pics when the bike is delivered. Earl
  19. i have a 2005 venture with 35,000k on it and i think my rotor maybe getting warped. pulses at slow speeds when slowing down. #1 is it possible to get warped during tire change?? #2 will grease from the rear hub find its way onto the rotor?? i cleaned it real good with brake clean and did good for about 600 miles and then started pulsing again... any thoughts
  20. I have a slight front end bounce when I go around a clover leaf. I checked the air pressure, drained the oil and made sure and replaced the oil making sure the same was in both tubes. I saw something about the rear shock could be bad. Any other ideas.
  21. the rear speakers on my 2010rsv appear to be broken and vibrate to the po9int that i can hear them while riding with the radio off is this a warrenty item if not how do you go about getting into them, i see a screw at the bottom of the arm rest? steve
  22. I just replaced the front E3 on my RSV after 21,600 miles. This is not near as many miles as I get from a Venom front tire, which seems a bit odd when you consider that I get about 3,000 miles MORE from an E3 rear tire than I do from a Venom rear. I have never been as satisfied with the Dunlop E3s as I am with Avon Venoms; I think the E3s are better than most other tires out there, but not quite up to the performance of the Venoms. I have a relatively new E3 on the rear (just 7,000 miles on it), and I put an Avon Venom on the front to see how that combination works. While changing the tires, I noticed that the Avon in stock size is considerably shorter than the E3 (smaller diameter), even when comparing a new Venom to a worn out E3. In addition, the Venom has a more rounded profile while the actual width of the tire from tread edge to edge is identical. I suspect the profile and smaller diameter contribute a lot to why the Venoms handle better for me. This new combo of the Venom front and E3 rear felt great today when I put about 50 miles on it to check out the new tire, but that is pretty early to tell. Gotta head back out to Phoenix this week, so after that 3,000 mile round trip I'll be able to give you a much better report on them. Goose
  23. Your wright up on how to replace the rear brake pads gave me the curage to do it myself..........Agin thank you as it saned me quite a bit by doing myself and now gives my a l.ittle more curage to do other things to this old girl myself. On a different note its amazing how well these things stop with new pads on the rear. I knew they were bad but it was almost touching on the inside pad and less than 1/8th and inch on the outside. guess I got my money on that set. I took a look at the front so they are next. I had a set of fa123's on hand so they went on the rear but I think I may put the sinterd set on the fronts as money gives leeway. Later all and again thanks fuzzy David
  24. well it apears that the final drive on my 91 vr is giving up its innards. Its making the dreaded howl when you let off the throttle. Kinda sounds like a dump trunk thats using the engine as a break. Does anybody have one that will fit they are willing to let go of. I have already talked to muffinman as to weather or not its the final or something else. I had the rear end and axle and drive shaft greased at the dealor and it didnt help. They even agreed that it was the final but no way Im paying $1500 for them to rebuild it.. anyways any help will be apreciated. Even if its ideas to check instead of replacement. Im even thinking of pulling the rear tire myself to regrease it . I have no idea what Im doing but Im sure with the help of this site and great members I can figure it out. Thanks in advance, David
