  1. Got the RSV back home today. It was the fuel pump, he said it was the 3rd one in the last 2 weeks that they have changed. They say they are not sure if the 10% ethenal in our gas is maybe the cause. I talked one of my Harley buddies and he said there is a Harley service bulliten out on the use of ethenal in their bikes. They recommend not using it. He did say all three bikes they changed the fuel pumps on had about the same mileage. Mine has 19,000 on it. Anyway I'm glad to have it back! They synced/EGA the carbs, cleaned the K&N air filters and adjusted the steering head bearings while they had it and it runs really good. I hope I don't have to see the dealer again for awhile. Ride Safe!
  2. I have done all the resoldering for an E4 code now im stumped still shows E4 DUH what am I doing wrong???? Is there a way to pump up shocks manually??? do not get E4 code now I get E2 code found I had a plug un plugged Dave:think:
  3. Has anyone experienced a knocking sound that seems to be coming from the water pump? I can't imagine what could be causing the knocking noise that seems to be more noticeable at idle and slightly above idle. Doesn't seem to be the clutch cause the knocking doesn't change with the clutch engaged or not. The clutch does make some noise when not engaged. The knocking sounds it definately coming from the water pump. The bike is an 88 VR and does not overheat even on the hotest Texas days. Any advise from anyone would be most welcome. Thanks Masterguns
  4. OK, so I'm merrily riding along today when my bike sputters, coughs and dies. I've had the petcock set on the main tank so I could get a rough idea of my city range before having to switch to reserve. I grabbed the pliers and switched to reserve. I restarted the bike and traveled approximately 25 feet before it died again and wouldn't restart. Fortunately, a friend happened by and helped me get some gas in the bike, but it didn't help. We put three gallons in, manually primed the carbs and it still wouldn't run on it's own. My first thought was the fuel filter's bad. I balled another friend who had access to a trailer and we brought tht bike home. I pulled the output hose from the fuel filter to the pump off and opened the petcock, fuel flowed freely from both the main and reserve side. I then reconnected the hose and disconnected the output hose from the fuel pump. Turned the key and nothing happened. "Ahah!" says I, "The fuel pump's bad!" I then removed the fuel pump, but then decided to test it in the garage just to make sure. I connected the leads to my 12-volt charger and it started pumping up a storm. Now I'm flustered. I'm thinking my problem either lies in the relay or the pressure sensor. Am I on the right track?
  5. Got this 86 VR last week. It has not been running for months(many, many months). It won't start and I am working on that. Got some Seafoam and have begun to see if I can get fuel to the carbs. But first... should have been an easy one. No rear brakes. Fronts(rt side) work fine. So just bleed the air out right. Put DOT 3 on the res. and pump, pump, pump(bottoms out each time). Open Lt. front bleeder... nothing. Did this a half dozen times. OK, plan B. Found the bleeder by the neck. Could only find one so I guess it's the right one:) Pump, pump, pump. Nothing. Not a drop of fluid. Still bottoming out on the bakes. On to plan C... the rears. Same drill... nothing. Resivour(sp) is still full. Seems the brake fluid isn't getting out of the res. Now what?? I know absolutely nothing about these bikes(and this one in particular) but I am willing to try to get it to work. Will take any suggestions... TIA, Wayne
  6. OK, I know this is a stupid question, but is there any trick to refilling the radiator on a 2005 Tour Deluxe? Not being mechanically inclined (and perhaps none too bright), I pulled the water pump cover to replace it with a chrome one without "Yamaha" stamped on it. Of course (being the water pump cover) coolant drained out onto the ground. I am sure I lost all of it. First, is there anything special about the Royal Star coolant? Will just Prestone from WalMart (pre-mixed at 50/50) do? Secondly, is there a tech article on this site detailing how to refill my coolant system? I REALLY would appreciate any help anyone could give. Thanks in advance.
  7. So I called a couple local Yamaha Dealers about getting a Yamaha handhelp air pump for the front and rear shocks. They didn't have any. One dealer asked it that was supplied when the bike was bought. He couldn't find any part # either? So does one come w/ a brand new bike? Is one available from Yamaha, if so what is the part #. From people I have talked to in the STAR group, it sounded like Yamaha should have one. Thanks.
  8. these V4 makes a great water pump , i can pump out my rad. in 8 miles rite out the ex. pipe :bawling:also it is very hard to remove a motor from from the parts bike with the wheels off [ front headers ] , i have pulled the motor mounts , drive shaft , all the wires and cables , carbs , do i have to pull the U joint ? doe's it slide out the rite side ? how come nobody said how heavy these V4s are ? it weighs more than a V8 !!! will maybe i can get the left header off tonite , when i pull the bad motor out , the wheels are staying on !!
  9. About 2 years ago, I installed a used fuel pump I bought on E-Bay. It worked just fine, so I left it installed on the 89. Was at about 47K at the time. So: Today, after carrying the original around in the Bags as a spare, I decided to re-install the original pump. ( Just to make sure it was working ) Wa La !!! Fuse Blew !!! It don't work. Opened it up, Pressure Switch OK, Pump section OK ( the bottom part ) . But found Low Resistance thru the Main Coil. About 1.3 ohms. The good one reads about 2.5 ohms ???? Totally at a loss to explain this, as the darn thing was working just fine 2 years ago when I removed it, and wrapped it up in a bag to carry as a spare. ???
  10. This should be an easy one. Does anyone know of a company selling just a plain (good quality) chrome water pump cover for my 05 Tour Deluxe? I was able to get a plain chromed timing hole cover from Baron's, but the only water pump covers he has are the "V Four" etched ones (to me, no better than the ones marked "Yamaha"). Let me know if there is a company you know of. Thanks.
  11. I need some advice! My 2006 Venture has become hard starting when cold. I also notice that I don't hear the fuel pump when turning the key on. Once started it runs fine. Is there anyone out there who has had the problem or knows of a solution, or is it back to the shop for me? Thanks, Kenw
  12. I am looking for a hand air-pump for the suspension on my '06 RSTD. I found one that had a pressure gauge attached, but it was a 150 PSI gauge, and the range that I would need, was so small I could not get an accurate reading. Can anyone suggest a good air pump for our bikes, and a company that has a decent price on them? What PSI range should I look for ? I figured 50 PSI max reading would be fine, since the front is so low, and the rear is 40 max I believe. And in another thread someone mentioned a pump with a 'Zero loss' chuck. I have had no luck sourcing that out on the net. Any help most appreciated. Also, what kind of pressure should I be running in my rear and front shocks? Here are the stats, I am 250 lbs, mostly ride by myself, but on occasion I have a 125 lb passenger. Any suggestions? Sonny
  13. Finally, after 4 months of on again, off again work, got the exhaust finished up, put the new AGM sealed battery in, pulled the plugs (put a couple of squirts of oil in each cylinder just for the rings), disconnected the coils and the fuel pump, cranked it over freely for a minute or two to get the oil all distributed again and fill the filter. Put the plugs in, connected the coils and fuel pump, put some gas in her, turned the key on, set the choke, hit the button, 3 revolutions later,,,,,SHE FIRED RIGHT UP!!!!!!!!! Little rough, but need to resynch the carbs, run some seafoam thru her, put some premium in the tank. So far, everything is fine. Won't get a chance to check the gears, etc. till I get the rear end, tire and brakes on it. Just got 5 of the six bushings in I need for the rear shock link setup. Gonna start on that right now. I AM SO FREAKIN' HAPPY RIGHT NOW, CAN'T YOU TELL! :dancefool: Hope to have her back on the road by this weekend sometime. Dan
  14. As I was filling the bike up at the Gate station on US-1 South I looked up and saw V4ME passing my pump. I nodded as I couldnt wave with the pump in my hand and he just gave a nod and kept on going. Well, Buddy, just how many portly guys you know on a absolutely drop dead gorgeous 99 Venture??? Well?? :rotf:
  15. :confused24:Dh and I've been working on my uncle's '83 Venture Royale for the last couple of days. The license plate has a '96 sticker, leading us to believe the beast hasn't been ridden in 12 years. We've got it running on three cylinders. The fourth hits occasionally. We're using seafoam in the gas. After letting the one carb to the can that's not hitting soak with seafoam overnight, it's doing better, but the engine will quit if dh takes it off choke and takes his hand away from blocking the air intake. He's going to see if the float is stuck. The cylinder is getting spark, and the carb seems to be getting fuel. It's just not sending the mixture to the cylinder. We're trying to avoid rebuilding the cylinders, if we can. We will rebuild them, if we must We changed the fuel filter. The fuel pump has not been replaced. The fuel pump is only pumping fuel in spurts. The fuel filter isn't filling up. Is it supposed to pump constant or only periodically? Is the fuel filter supposed to fill? The petcock is plastic and brittle. Most of what plastic was sticking out to turn has broken off. It needs replacing, but we want to know if there's a metal one to replace it with. I see replacement petcocks on the internet for $36, but they're plastic. Is there an alternative? We have a service manual, but haven't found any information about adjusting cam chains. Is there a way to adjust cam chains? There's a rattling, and we'd like to figure out if it's just chains that need to be adjusted of if we need to anticipate adjusting the valves, not a happy prospect. *wish it weren't shims*
  16. Hey Everyone.... 17. Does anyone know whwer I can purchase a battery operated air pump for tires.
  18. I decided to drain the antifreeze yesterday. Everything went well, drained the radiator, cylinders, etc. but when I got to the water pump I couldn't believe how hard it is to get to the drain plug out. Do I need a special wrench? Do I need to take the exhaust pipe off? If it is the exhaust pipe that has to come off then the bottom screw on the pipe is just as hard to get to. Am I missing something? What if I don't drain the water pump? Harry
  19. is this the same as the Progressive pump you all talk about? http://www.mawonline.com/newsite/progressive_suspension-gauge_mounted_shock_absorber_pumps.htm
  20. Is it true that the 2nd gens don't have the Auto/Manual Air Suspension Adjustment like the 1st gens did? If not, do you have to manually put in air? Need to carry air pump with you?
  21. 91 Venture Royale, 43,000 miles. When I ride all day in hot weather, the next morning I have a little bit of coolant on my right exhaust just below the water pump. It burns off when I start up and the loss is negligable. Still It bugs me. I thought it was the o-rings in the plastic transfer pipe between the water pump and the thermostat housing. But, today I got down and looked and there is a little hole in the bottom of the water pump and there is a stain, as though coolant has leaked out the hole from time to time. This is the only place that looks like anything has leaked in the past. Anyone have a similar experience? Do I need to fix it?
  22. I'm in the middle of a frame change because of a broken frame. While i had the engine out i wanted to check the oil line o-ring. What i found was a good red o-ring. the rest of thr o-rings are of the red type including the pump line. What disturbes me is the red 0-ring i found in the oil pump pick up screen. It seems to be the same size as the one on the oil distribution line that gives trouble (as stated in another thread by RandyA). I am concerned thet i have blown one out somewhere else; but i can't imagine where it could have come from. I have looked in the manual; but i can't find another one that big. maybe i overlooked it??? Do any of you have any ideas? I have attatched picts of the o-ring. One picture is a comparison to the oil pump line and the oil distribution line o-rings. The larger o-ring is from the oil pump line. In addition to the other trash that i dug out of the screen, i found the steel ball th at is in the picture with the broken o-ring. i included a pict of the tip of a ball point pen for size comparrison. Any ideas what the ball may be?? I think i saw anotherone but could not find it. might have been mistaken or droped it. The bike had been hard shifting before i pulled the engine. (Klunky) and i have developed a knock at idle that goes away whith increased engine speed. These are the reason i checked the o-ring.
  23. Is there anyone out there that knows what number is printed on the fuel pump relay on an 83 standard? I'm not sure I have the right one.... Thanks in advance, Tim
