  1. My '89 VR & trailer have matching 5 pin square connectors for the trailer wiring. My '06 RSV also came with a 5 pin square connector. The problem is the '06 RSV & trailer are both male plugs. So I thought I'd just buy a new set & replace the male plug on the RSV with a female plug, like the VR has, and then the trailer would work on either bike. But where the heck do you find these plugs? I've looked at all the auto parts stores & on the net and can't find them anywhere. Can't find something on the internet...?...what's up with that?! I could go with a 6 pin and just not use the last pin (trailer brakes), but then I'd probably have to swap out 3 sets of plugs to get everything to be able to connect together. But after searching with no luck I'm starting to think I should do just that...for some reason the 5 pin square plugs seem to be top secret or something! Anyone know where I can find them?
  2. Silly question, however I need to replace plugs in my !st Gen., and I missed placed my socket. Can anyone give me the right socket size to pull these? Thanks in advance. Semper Fi
  3. So last week I washed the bike a work. Fired it up and rode block down the street to fill up the tank. As I pulled up to the pump the idle got rough, dropped to about 600 and eventually died. i ended up pushing it to one of my employers other building. After 4 hours of trying to get it to run I gave up and left it for the night. Occasionally I would get it to fire, but it would never idle right nor would it idle over 300RPM. Next day, after work it fired up and idled. I could even twist the throttle and rev the engine. Shut it down, change the plugs. After changing the plugs, it idled smooth. The throttle was crisp. I went ahead and rode it the 70 miles home. It ran great! I did notice at idle it smelled rich though. Fast forward to today. I wander out to the shop to take the scoot for a ride. Hit the starter. It cranks for a few seconds then fires. idle was REALLY low. Let it idle for a couple of minutes and it dies. Now it won't start again. Anybody got any suggestions where to start? Thanks, Ed
  4. Yesterday I had an imprompt street race with a friend who just purchased a Kawasaki Voyager his first big bike and he wanted to see how it compared to mine ('89 VR with 54K miles) as he had ridden mine before. The Voyager held its own until close to 100. After we stopped and discussed how well his new bike ran and then headed out again I noticed a dramatic loss in power over 3000 rpm in every gear. As long as I shifted below 3000 it seemed to run ok. I pulled the plugs today and they looked fine. I put in new plugs and I am having the same problem. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
  5. OK so since the weather has been crap here so far, the old gal hasn't been used much this year. In fact according to my gas log, I filled her up last A MONTH AGO! She has become a bit hard to start from cold of late: She doesn't seem to want any choke till she fires then likes about half way for about 3 or 4 mins, and then stumbles if I don't take the choke off but runs and idles fine so long as I do. The battery is brand new, and I have 4 guage battery & starter cables installed already. The starter clutch still needs replacement but is less of a problem since the new battery went in. It was approx 15 deg C last evening and 5 deg C this morning and she gave me exactly the same problems at both temperatures in her nice dry garage. Well I have ordered up 160ml SeaFoam / tank of fuel STAT, for the next few tanks. All good stuff, lots on hand. While riding along though, I thought perhaps I should splurge on some new plugs for the old gal too. Seems to me I have read here that there are some super platinum, forked electrode etc plugs that these bikes really like. Whats the consensus guys, what are the best plugs for these old bikes? What would make her real happy ? Thanks, Brian H.
  6. i guess i will go ahead and stick my neck out and ask this quistion. can you tell me what a color tune is and how it works i seen alot of talk about it and i really dont know what it is or how it is performed i do know that it's got some thing to do with the plugs and carb's but other than that i am lost.
  7. Finally, after 4 months of on again, off again work, got the exhaust finished up, put the new AGM sealed battery in, pulled the plugs (put a couple of squirts of oil in each cylinder just for the rings), disconnected the coils and the fuel pump, cranked it over freely for a minute or two to get the oil all distributed again and fill the filter. Put the plugs in, connected the coils and fuel pump, put some gas in her, turned the key on, set the choke, hit the button, 3 revolutions later,,,,,SHE FIRED RIGHT UP!!!!!!!!! Little rough, but need to resynch the carbs, run some seafoam thru her, put some premium in the tank. So far, everything is fine. Won't get a chance to check the gears, etc. till I get the rear end, tire and brakes on it. Just got 5 of the six bushings in I need for the rear shock link setup. Gonna start on that right now. I AM SO FREAKIN' HAPPY RIGHT NOW, CAN'T YOU TELL! :dancefool: Hope to have her back on the road by this weekend sometime. Dan
  8. Really bad.New plugs and new plug wires.Whats wrong?
  9. I have been having problems with my 06 Midnight Venture. Specifically one of the cyclinders ie; As I sit on the bike it is the rear cylinder on my LEFT. First it was gas-fouling plugs on this cylinder....Ran 3 cans of SeaFoam through 2 tanks of gas and the carb-float problem seems to be gone now. NOW....Today I went for a spin that was roughly 100 miles at speeds from 50-70mph. When I got home I checked all the exhaust headers as they come out of the cylinders. The header coming from that LEFT REAR CYLINDER was warm to the touch whereas the others were very HOT. Performance-wise the bike was fairly decent but I did notice a slight popping and at times it seemed sluggish on the throttle with small periods of hesitancy when I rolled on the throttle...... and even tried holding the throttle steady at 50mph in 3rd gear. Any ideas as to what I should do from this point? I'm thinking about re-synching the carbs....... and doing it step-by-step as provided by Freebird here in the Tech Section. Also putting in 4 new plugs as well with the synch job. Note: Sorry for such a long post but I want to get as much info out in order to help you guys with the trouble-shooting advice. Regards............Boomer
  10. Greetings friends, I have decieded to have my trunk rack re-chromed. While it is at the plater, I need some hole plugs to plug the holes till it gets back. I need to do the same thing to my fiberglass trailer too, which will be permanent. The holes are 1/4"-5/16". Can someone suggest a type, and tell me where to find such an animal. I prefer some that are low profile, chrome or non-chrome; it dosen't matter. And as always, thank you.
  11. Antbody ever tried these? Or even heard of them? http://www.pulstarplug.com/index.html
  12. I am running stock NGK plugs in my 06 Venture. Would performance improve with a different brand of plug? How about plugs that run hotter? Comments and suggestions welcomed! Regards...........Boomer
  13. Can someone tell me what the difference is (besides the number). Spark plugs DPR8EA-9 and DPR7EA-9 The plugs I removed from the bike were with the "7", they look almost identical. Also why would you use one vs the other. ? Brad
  14. My question for the know it all'rs, is why do our scoots use copper core high tension wires instead of carbon core. I have a lot of static in my radio coming from the ignition, it's still there when I unplug the stator. I put in new wires last year and new plugs. It's new plugs every spring for me. This year I tried non resistor type plugs but that was not a direction to go, runs great but the noise is deafening. So back to resistor plugs, but how about carbon core wires. Went through all the grounding issues, shielded cables etc.etc. can't seem to solve this problem.
  15. Last year after building the bike it was running smooth but I've been wondering why it felt a little sluggish. Figured it was just the weight. After letting it sit over the winter I had a hell of a time starting it which a bunch of you gave a bunch of suggestions and with those I got it running again. Well yesterday after running a few blocks and shutting down for an hour, it didn't want to start again. So I pulled the plugs, which looked like they were soaked in oil. I cleaned them and tried again. It ran for a little bit then got really rough. Yanked plugs again, cleaned them, repeat. Pulled them a 3rd time, cleaned them and still the same thing. So finally called a buddy here in town and first thing he said was "did you swap out for hotter plugs? Don't forget, you have altitude to adjust for up here". So got a set of hotter plugs and that was it. Thing not only runs like a bat outa heck, but it's running way better than it was last year. So just a reminder, if you live at high altitude, don't forget to take into account altitude/air pressure when you are tuning.
  16. Well I did it. I bought my 2006 RSMV in December. It turned 8,000 miles this week so I performed my first "Do it yourself" maintenance for the 8,000 mile service. 1. Oil Change 2. Oil Filter Change 3. Inspected hoses 4. Inspected Brakes 5. Changed out Spark Plugs (Anything I need to do after changing plugs?) The plugs were a bear to change out. I had to take the seat off, loosen the Gas Tank take of the "dressing on the cylinders so I could access the fron plugs. Is there anything else I need to do. I rather enjoyed doing this myself and saved almost $200.00 in labor costs had the dealership where I bought the bike would have charged me for labor alone Al Tomlinson Bisbee, AZ
  17. Many thanks to Freebird and out telephone conversation the other day. I managed to find the wire set on ebay (that had been mentioned on this website in the past) and was able to order a set. Hopefully this will solve my 1989 miss on one cylinder as I probably fouled a plug and needed to change plugs. So, will change all wires and plugs and see what happens. Once again, thanks for all your help Freebird.
  18. I'm rebuilding the Black Beast from the accident I had in November. While I have it down I am doing several mods. I will talk about those in another thread and reserve this one for the bar end weights. I wanted to keep the bar end weights to reduce vibration and have a place to rest my hand while I was using the cruise control. Once I got the handle bars stripped down here is what I came up with. The threaded plugs that the weights screw into are welded in with just a spot weld on the bottom side of the bar. I went out to my brother-in-law's shop and ground the weld out. (Since the stock bars were ruined I didn't get real creative about saving them). If you want to save the stock bars it would be easy to grind just the weld, then reweld the plugs back in later. I marked the new bars so I could drill a 3/8" hole in them to weld the plugs back in. Then I had my brother-in-law spot weld the plugs in. Now this is important. DONT PICK THE BAR UP BY THE HANDLE. IT'S HOT!!!!!! (Yeah I know. I knew better. But since the brain surgery in January my short term memory seems to be shot:whistling:.) I now have a set of Flander's bars with the option to use the bar weights or not. All it cost me was 30 minutes of my brother-in-law laughing at me cause I burnt my hand. The things we suffer through to ride:confused24:. I hope this can be of use to someone out there. Ride safe.
  19. http://www.venturerider.org/spoiler/image027.jpg Does anyone know where I could get another set (male, female) of these plugs?
  20. I am kind of new to the motorcycle scene. I have worked with cars since I was a kid. I purchased a totaly perfect '86 Venture last summer. As I use it regular I desided to change plugs and oil over the christmas break. Then wile out riding last week it started to back fire when I get off the gas and some times when I am warming it up it will pop slightly. Have I got a plug loose.... what a bear to change plugs on..... ? Have I disturbed something...... a carb rubber? The local shops just shake thier heads and say live with it or scrap it. any recommendations from other riders would be helpful Kevin Victoria BC Canada
  21. Do I need to remove the tank to change out the plugs, I have 9k on the bike and not sure if they have ever been changed or not. Also what should they be gaped at?? Thanks
  22. I noticed the other day that the 83 was smoking some on high rpm's sitting in the garage did some checking and found that my diaphragm's had pin holes except #4. Also checked the plugs all but #4 was trying to foul out - wet fuel. #4 excellent shape. diaphragm's that had pin holes also had traces of fuel in them except #4 which was dry. So what I'm asking is will a bad diaphragm cause the plugs to stay wet with fuel? #4 diaphragm is in good shape and the plug look great as well tan color. If not what would I be missing to cause the plugs to stay wet ? maybe float levels to high? plugs -caps-wires replaced first of last season - carbs synchronized What's funny is how well the beast runs too. good idle runs out good no dead spots just noticed it started smoking on high rpm- fuel. buddy
  23. Nothing to do with the bikes, but I have some questions, or perhaps some insight. Were here at Lonna's moms and I have been working off some small projects. The GFCI plugs aren't working in the bathrooms and from what I gather never have. This is a Mobile home and I purchased a small plug in tester to check the circuts. It states that the hot and ground are reversed, now I wanted to shut the circut off and see if the plugs were the culprit. Can't get the supposed circut to kill the power so I'm not screwing with it any more. What I'm driving at here is there are 3 women and 2 kids here, so they aren't handy with any of this. Do any of our Texas members know of a reputable electrician that can shoot over to N. Houston and get this problem recified. I will more than likely be footing the bill here as Lonna's mom doesn't have a lot of cash to play with. As Always, any help or guidance would be appreciated
  24. Hey fellows, I am a first time poster with a problem. I have an 87 Venture that keeps fouling out the rear plugs. I beleive they are cylinders 1 & 3. I recently purchased this as a project and boy is it one. I need direction. I have checked the diaphragms and slides, no issues. I put new plugs in the rear and it ran like a scalded dog for about 20-30 miles but has slowly degraded back to a backfiring, two rear cylinders only, beast. When I first got the bike the two rear exhaust gaskets were worn completely out, pipes slid back and fourth inside the exhaust manifold. Any help would be appreciated and if this has been covered before I apologize. I have searched for old post's regarding this issue and could not find any. Thanks,
  25. Over the Christmas break I will be starting up the wood stove in the garage and changing the coolant in my 2nd gen. Venture. I have not done this service before. I guess I will follow the service manuals guide lines. Is there anything to watch out for or should do or not do? I will also change the plugs which I have done before. I am close to 40,000 miles on the bike. I did the splines this past summer when I changed the rear tire. Any in put?
