  1. OK, just curious here, I changed the coolant a few weeks ago and have had a slight drip out of the plug under what I am assuming is the water pump (what I used to drain the coolant). I went into the local shop and ordered the gasket for it (part 13 on the attached diagram). This is a metal part with a lip on one side. Is that the right part and if so, which was does the lip go.   2. connected their gps to the AUX circuit and been able to add another device at the same time. We are listening to these devices called walk abouts which basically are books on tape in one unit. when we plug one into the circuit, (I have split the circuit) with the gps connected, nothing works. I thought others were also doing this. Was I wrong? Bob
  3. Does anyone know a part number or a source for a male plug that will fit the AUX DC output that is tied up beside the battery? I have a heated vest I want to get rigged up but the ends are different and I'd much rather splice the right style of plug on the vest then mod the bike's wiring. Thanks.

Didn't have anything quite wide enough to plug the AIS, so I got the biggest tapered wire nut I had in the workshop, wrapped the outside of it a few times with duct tape to make it snug in the hole, and then duct taped over the plug after insertion before reattaching the hose. Works like a charm! Didn't do the front AIS yet, but I'll use the same thing when I do my next oil and filter change and can get to it easier. Go me!
  5. Hey guys- This may have been done. Did a search and didn't see it... so here goes: I wanted an extra 12v outlet on the right of the fairing, because sometimes I want to charge my phone as well as have the GPS (who has a grumpy battery) running.(new GPS has a special cord, so I can't use my USB double charger anymore.) I also removed the casette deck, and made a little storage area. I had a wire coming out of there, and then out from under the fairing... but when I didn't have something plugged in, I didn't like the cable hanging out. So I tried adding a new, easy to change aux plug in case this one fails over time. Started with a black rubber coupling from radioshack, but it didn't work. Use the gold one you see in the pics. it's worth the extra 3 bucks. This was just an experiment, but seems to have worked perfectly and gave me just what I wanted. First, drilled a hole in my beautiful fairing. I drilled too small, and slowly filed the hole more until it had a nice snug fit. However, the final solution would probably work with a hole slightly larger because I came up with a good solution for holding the plug in and waterproofing the opening. I drilled right behind the speaker, so that the plug is facing down when installed. This should eliminate almost all chances of water getting in there: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7390.jpg Then, I put an e-clip around the coupler with a neoprene washer, and put it in the hole from the bottom. If you look close in this pic, you can see both parts. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7403.jpg Next, in the inside, I used another washer, and then a bushing to help me get the e-clip on nice and tight. I was using the grooves in the knurled texture of the coupling as a groove for the clips. I think these were 1/2 inch e-clips... but I brought the coupler in and just figured it out in the hardware store. They have to fit tight. The bushing helped make it easier to put the inside e-clip on with pliers because I had space between the fairing wall and the clip's groove. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7399.jpg Next, I just used a small patch cord to plug in to the aux input of the bike to the coupler. I really like it because you can't see it unless you kind of squat down and look up. Very inconspicuous. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg249/screamstone/CA2008/bike%20mods/th_IMG_7400.jpg Since I was there, I looked at this 12v outlet I got from a marine supply warehouse in town. (So I'm assuming it's "weather friendly"). I wanted to add it to the lower right fairing and just tap in to the other 12v outlet. I used a 1" Flat wood bit (the flat kind with a point, if you know what I mean) to drill a hole- but that's slightly too large since I didn't have any washers. Not a problem- it still fits, but I want to add washers to "clean up" the look and keep water from seeping in around the edges. Didn't take many pics at this point, because I just kind of did it on a whim. I didn't have a perfect size bit for the lighter outlet, but it's close enough, I can't see light around the lighter with the front of the fairing off. But I plan on installing a washer on both sides (those neoprene big washers) to seal it up and reduce jiggle. It looks great as it is, though!!! Well I pulled the plug caps apart and removed the resistor, cleaned the insides,and replaced with copper wire. pulled the connectors off the TCI and cleaned em, checked plugs with ohm meter [like I knew what I was doing ha!] I don't remember what the reading were but they were the same, checked the plug on the left side of the frame rail-unhooked going to TCI it read 540 ohms except the w/g 512 ohms, going towards pick up coils there was no resistance, o. So with what I could find to clean I did, fired it up, warmed it still #1 & #3 are dead between 2000 RPM and 2500.? I really hate to just start throwing parts at it and try to hit something, really was hoping it was the resistors in the plug caps, any ideas?

Here in God's Country ( TX ) where we can ride most of the year, what plug would be the best for this temperate zone,,,, I have in long years past went up in heat ( down in number I think it went ) and cant remember how that turned out,,,something to do with age I think I know the stock plug is DPR8EA-9 What about the 7EA-9

I've got my low speed miss narrowed down to this; idles good, slowly take the throttle up and miss gets real noticeable at about 2000 rpm and at 2500 [by the tach] it clears right up and is gone. By pulling plug wires one at a time and grounding an old plug in the wire I found that cyls.. #1 and #3 both lost spark at 2000 and came back at 2500. Any ideas on this?

Plug was pulled after low speed ride & pulling into garage. Iridium plug.   10. Has anyone had any experience of moving the drivers intercom plug from the tank? Does it have enough cable to go under the tank near the seat and how do you savely get the plug seating unglued from the tank? Thanks for any help.

  12. Well, my key was pretty hot today when I turned off my bike. Although my thermometer did say it was 97 out (in the shade), and I was riding for ~4-5 hours or so... In the sun. So, while I don't think I am having premature switch issues, I just figured it was time that I come up with a quick and easy bypass. I know that there is a write up for doing this and cutting the wires on the bike to wire up the bypass for when it fails (and I will probably do this if absolutely necessary), but what I would like to do is get a plug and play setup going, so all I have to do is unplug my faulty ignition switch and plug in my bypass (using the existing wiring). I have also considered dismantling my current ignition switch for inspection and cleaning - as an attempt at a preventative measure. Question: Does anyone have an old ignition switch (failed or not, I don't care) that you wouldn't mind sending me? Either the whole switch or snip the wires as close to the switch as possible (so I have a decent length going to the plug-in connectors left over). I'll pay shipping (obviously).   13. Ok what I kneed is the size of the retainer screw that holds in the draincock plug. I had a leak that turned out to be a hose at the overflow bottle. In the process I noticed that the draincock was turned wrong at the dealors during the last repair work so I went to losen the screw so I could turn it to the prpoer positionand thats when I noticed no screw. So I need to know the thread size and length. Any help would be apreciated. . I intend on ordering the upgrade kit from skydoc but would like to get something so I can ride till then. Be as Earl is temperarily down. Tahnks in advance. DAvid

  15. ok just what does this thing called a bank sensor do? and the boost sensor do.? reason im asking is the bank one one mine looks like its not connected? i see a plug type plug in 3 wires on it red, green. and i think a blue colour? but dont see where it goes? unless some one had a hitch on this bike at one time and its a trailer conector? as this is close to the rear back by the end of the bike left hand side?
  16. Did I read somewhere that the 2ndGens have a cigarette lighter power plug??? Or was I halucinating again..... I didn't see any reference to one in the owners manual.... but I'm pretty sure I've run across posts about it... Never mind I found it..... Sorry for the dry run...
  17. Well, after getting my '87VR back together I had 2 stuck carb needle/seat assemblies. So I decided since the old girl had over 70k...it was time for a complete going thru of all carbs. I have put 99% of all the miles on this bike. So I know how it should run. I have done carb work many times on many different bikes. So I was not afraid. Jets were removed, jet blocks "dipped". I set the floats absolutely perfect on the bench and confirmed w/engine running. Results have been all carbs give an ideal idle of 2.5ccw low speed screw all carbs. While #1 & 2 cause rpm drop right at 3 ccw. Which is quite normal to me. BUT on #4(rght. frnt) I can go to 5 turns ccw and not cause the idle to drop and #3 is almost the same. Which is not normal to me. All settings done with an accurate digital tach. Carbs are syc'd.All checks for vacuum leaks done. None found nor suspected because... HERE's the real issue. #4 starts to misfire when the bike is really hot, seemingly like too rich. I can hear the spark cap arcing and using a screw driver and my finger(ouch)confirmed this. Wire replaced 2 times, spark plug & cap(stock and NGK) 3 times-no change. The spark plug is not wet when it is removed. But does have a very small brown spot on it. I suspect something like this may be impossble to read w/o that glass spark plug thing(can't remember the name).I honestly believe the new internal gaskets that are now the "norm", don't seal worth a damn. These new cheapo gaskets are very fiberous.I suspect they don't seal well. The originals were hard paper. Does anyone else whose done rebuilds have the same suspicions regarding these NEW gaskets...? My only other possibility is the choke plunger leaking. But this possibility is something I have never witnessed in all my years. Lastly , I used to always get over 40mpg solo... Now it's impossible. No, I am not going to lower the needles. That's not the issue here.
  18. I removed the trunk from my '09 RSV and reinstalled the CB under the luggage rack. I can hear my radio and my cb through the speakers but can't hear anything through my headset. Everything is hooked up as before except for the 2 plugs that plug into the trunk. Does the trunk have to be installed in order for the headset to work when plugged into the tank plug? Or is there possibly something wrong with the wiring somewhere up front? Thanks in advance.........

Bought the bike used with 3000 km, it now has 36,000 kms and when I changed the rear gear oil I noticed the plug has a nipple on the end, and the nipple on my plug was coated in either grease (I hope) or gunk build up (hope not). Could it be grease? sure felt like it... Greasy fingers crossed!
  20. On my '86 VR, I've got a drip coming from the drain valve plug under the center of the radiator. Are there o-rings in there that could be replaced, or should I try to find a new plug? Any ideas? Thanks.
  21. Generally my venture doesn't take much choke to start it. After a cool start up from outside I drove straight into my garage(no warm up). Next day went to start and only running on 3 cylinders. three hot one cold. Took the plug out it was wet and fouled, I replaced only that plug but it still is not running the same. Any thoughts on this? Should replace all plugs? Just replaced begining of last year.

  23. I made one of these and it works perfectly. I used old motor oil for the liquid. Sync #1 to #2, then plug those and sync #3 to #4. Then hook up tool to #2 and #4 to sync left side to right side (make sure to plug ports on #1 and #3).
  24. went to prep the bike to trailer to maint day in Tomball, Tx and what did i find? green fluid on the clutch cover and an open hole on the valve jug. tell me if i have guessed correctly and a freeze plug has blown out. the green stuff is anti freez (that didn't work). then i guess i will need a freeze plug. how do you install a new one? I don't know what is going on with my bike, but if all "junk" comes in three's, then i should be clear by now. 1 rear tire flat - new one bought and installed 2 clutch shifter problem - in process 3 freeze plug - in learning curve. thanks
  25. First of all I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped last time. I now have brakes all the way around and i found a broken wire on the kickstand switch. I have now came across more problems. First of all does anyone have a CHEAP set of front rotors? Mine are both bent. I have a 1988 venture. Second problem as i put this bike back together after getting it in pieces. I have found 3 wiring plugs that I cant find a home for. The first is right behind the headlight it is a flat 3 wire plug that has a white end on it. The 3 wires are red and blue, red and either yellow or light brown and then black. The second plug is green in color two plugs one sits sideways on top of the other. The wires are light brown and black. The third plug is sticking out where the harness turns down from top to go to kickstand. About front of seat. It is a 2 plug black on end and has protective cover over the two wires. One wire is red the other is black. I know they have wiring diagrams on this sire however they show everything. The radio, CB, and everything else. My bike only has cruse nothing else. Since i didn't take it radio apart i don't know if there was even anything there. If anyone could help I would really be grateful. I dont know if it is part of it but on my dash the battery light is showing. I am guessing it is not charging.
