  1. Yesterday, was a beautiful sunny day here in central Florida. We were going to head out on the bike and explore some of the areas we haven't been to yet but some of the other folks in the park invited us to join them for a ride. Great idea, I thought, it's always nice to ride with someone who may know of some good riding in the local area. So we head out at about 12:15, stop to top up the gas tank and off we go. Sixteen miles up the road I see everyone (four other bikes with five people) slowing and turning into a bar. Maybe a great place to eat, I think. Nope, $1 drafts. OK, go with the flow, I'll have a diet coke. Half an hour later we're ready to roll again. Nice ride, seeing some different country and starting to enjoy the trip. Now what? Another thirty miles and now we're pulling into another bar. We don't want to be rude and I'm getting hungry so in we go. Again $1 drafts and just awful deep fried bar food. But it's a nice sunny day and we're sitting on a patio overlooking a nice river. An hour later off we go again. Four lanes, heavy traffic with lots of strip malls etc. After thirty miles of this we turn off the four lane on to a nice country road and start heading toward the gulf. We stop again but this time it's a nice beach area. The beer drinkers run into the restroom for a quick pit stop and ten minutes later away we go. Back into the traffic for about ten miles or so then a main two lane road but at least it's out in the country. Another thirty miles and you guessed it, another bar. By this time it's getting to be about 5:00, dark in a little over an hour and I've had enough bars. I gave everyone a honk and a wave and off I went. Hope they didn't think I was rude but if they did, too bad. I went back to the space shuttle, put my feet up and enjoyed a nice cold beer out on the patio.
  2. My late winter maintenance this year is to change out all the hoses, thermostat, o-rings in thermostat housing and thermo switch at housing. As some of you know I have a lot of miles and it is past nine years old. I plan a 5,000 mile ride in April so I am going to start on this soon. My question is "is there anything else I should be looking at". Last spring I put new tires on and lubed the swing arm, pins, and differential. I change the rear oil when I change the engine oil and clean the K&N filters. After these 135,000 miles this bike has been flawless although I lost the CB last summer.
  3. all of a sudden , no audio output either from the speakers or the headset from any source, GPS, radio, CD intercom, anything. I have a mike mute installed have worked for many miles. I have checked all the fuses I can find. all the electronics work, it's like the amperfier isn't working,, any suggestions
  4. Jan and I drove from Las Vegas, NV this morning to Tucson, AZ. We looked at it on mapquest last night to get a feel for the day (427 miles). When we programed the TOMTOM and headed out, Jan noticed that it showed a 100 mile longer trip than what we saw the night before. Come to find out, the unit was keeping us on the Interstates and would have taken us to Flagstaff, AZ first and then south to Phoenix, then Tucson. We remembered mapquest took us down Hwy 93 to Phoenix and once we started that way, the unit corrected itself and, poof, a hundred miles of driving disappeared. Man did we get lucky! Dave
  5. I'm shopping for a cycle I can buy outright and I am considering a 2nd Generation RSV that has a bit over 100,000 miles. It got me to thinking - what is the most miles you have seen on a 2nd Generation RSV?
  6. About 90 miles into the ride back to Houston from the Rockport Maintenance Day, Roxie suffered a catastrophic failure. I heard a loud clunk and felt her die. I pulled the clutch, and emergency stopped on the right shoulder. That was kind of exciting, as Dave P./Just Foolin' Around and I were passing cars and fellow VentureRiders. I turned off the power as Roxie spilled out oil. In fact, I'd left a long trail of oil as I made it to the shoulder. I am thankful for my friends, who came to a stop, and who u-turned to come back for me. We had quite a party there on the freeway shoulder. Kreg/Kbay went and got his trailer, and returned to carry me home. It seems to me that she'd thrown a rod. At least that's what we called it when I turned wrenches in High School. I'm not sure what they call it now, or even if that is accurate on a second gen engine. It looks like she lost most of her oil, and there was coolant in the puddle as well. The oil seems to have come out above the front motor mount. My warranty expires in April, and I am glad it happened now, and when surrounded by friends. Is there any way this is not covered by the warranty? I certainly have not heard of a well-maintained Venture engine dying like this. I only have 55,000 miles on her. 7. Is this do able or am I a brick shy of a full load? Any suggestions would be appreciated. My son completes boot camp in late june. I would like to attend the ceremony. I have limited time off from work. Looking at riding there and back 3 days each way, 800 first day MN to CO, 900 second day CO to Nevada, 500 miles 3rd day Nevada to San Diego. I have done a couple back to back 750 mile days in the past so the length of time on the bike doesn't worry me, more the terrain (desert and mountains) and a strategy if something fails on the bike so far from home. The bike has 80,000 miles on it, and is in good running shape.
  8. coming to the pros for this answer........need for legal documents.. valu on the bike......04 midnight.......53000 miles.......has additional chrome and lights..no damage, never dropped....but that crack or split in front left lower cowl fairing or whatever its called...lol kbb tells me retail 9080 trade in 6350 but doesnt ask miles or condition
  9. Hi guys and gals, just paid my dues and anxious to meet y'all. Next few weeks are going to be great for riding, temps in mid 70's and no rain that I can see. I live on the west side of Phoenix in Buckeye. There are lots of cool desert destinations around here, one of my favorite is the Desert Rose on old highway 80, about 20 miles west of Buckeye. Since I am retired, I can ride anywhere/anytime. Please check in, say hey, and lets get something going before it gets "warm". George
  10. I have bought a 2007 Royal Star Tour Deluxe which I haven't picked up yet. In the meantime I have been reading the manual and come across engine break-in period. I have never owned anything new with 0 miles. The manual says avoid prolonged operation over 1/3 throttle in the first 600 miles then avoid prolonged operation over 1/2 throttle to 1000 miles. Basically I understand this to baby the thing for this time. This may be a stupid question but my concern is what is determined to be "prolonged operation"? I have an hour ride with this coming home mostly highway speed. Is an hour considered "prolonged operation"? I ask this cause as the manual states "there is never a more important period in the life of your engine than the period between 0 and 1000 miles". Is there anything else I should watch out for. Thank you in advance for any replies.
  11. Has anyone repacked there Bubs with the cermic material? Some where I read that it lasts 5-7 time longer. Onr gentleman said he has over 20,000 miles and no need to repack them. Checks them every spring and they look just like the day he put it on.
  12. Even though it rained all day I still got my annual New Years day ride in.The rain was coming down hard at times but the Frogg Toggs did their job.I didn't get over 25 mph or more than 20 miles from home so that makes for a long day. Can't figure out whats wrong with people,I didn't see another bike all day long.
  13. hi all just found a 1999 rsv thats been triked out with a motor trike kit. it has less than 18,000 miles on it. they want $15,000 for it. i know the engine not even broken in at those miles. shucks when i bought my '99 rsv it only had 21,000 miles on the clock. should i go for the $15,000 or offer them a lower price? reguards don c.
  14. I changed my oil and noticed a lot of sludge on the filler cap. This is an 02 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 4.7 V-8. That was about 2200 miles ago and I added 7.5 oz. of SeaFoam to the oil when I put it in. I also installed a new PCV valve. The truck has 126.5K miles now and I have never had a problem with it. Question: Can I continue to use the SeaFoam with each oil change or should I change from dino oil to synthetic? And would either of this make any difference? There is a forum that really blasts this engine for too small journals and cylinders dropping out plus engine seisures with low mileage, but I have never had any problems other than the sludge starting to build.
  15. I read that one does not need to worry about valve adjustment on the 1300 venture engine until around 100,000 miles. My bike has about 18,000 miles on it, 2008 but I would like to know just went is the recommended time to go to that length in getting into the valves and shim replacement. Just a ballpark figure so as I know about when to perform the valve job. Thanks, DanC:dancefool:
  16. I sold my trike and the guy picked it up today and left around 1:00pm. At 1:45pm some drunk drove through my garage right where my trike was sitting. I am storing an 09 Trike for a friend that has 500 miles on it and it took a hit. Check out my pictures! What a day!!! No one was hurt!
  17. my 2010 Wings fuel mileage seems to be all over the place from 35 to 40 miles per gallon. I got 1600 miles on the bike using premium gasoline 92 octane BP or 89 oct from Sunoco. Seem to get better mileage from the 89. I know its how and were you ride but with my RSTD i got 44 miles per gallon on mid-grade gas always put in 2 oz s of marvel mystery oil. I know there will be a difference from a 4 to 6 cylinder but always averaged 44 mpg. How many miles will it take for my Goldwing to break-in and get a good average and what are other Goldwings getting. When i ride highway its 65 to 70 mph and 45 to 50 on our main roads down here in florida. Will be switching to synthetic oil on the next change and have factory Dunlop's tires.
  18. My other riding group (ZZRBikes) had a ride this past weekend. I was carrying a passenger and decided I would ride the Beast. I towed her to Dallas and rode to Kerrville on Friday morning. The group (2 x ZZR1200, 4 x C14, 1 x R1, 1 x BMW, and my VR) left Kerrville at 9:30am on Saturday. About 75 miles into the ride my rear tire started going down. I found a hole where something had punctured it. We put a plug in it and rode for a while. The plug came out (first time I have had a plug come out) and we got sideways in a turn. We put another plug in and took it easy to the "Motorcycle Store". A staff member claimed he had a plug that would not fall out. He used a kit and punched in a rubber plug with a mushroom or umbrella tip. I took it easy for the next 80 miles to the hotel. In the morning she is still holding the 42lbs of air I started with. I decided we would ride with a group most of the way back to Dallas, safety in numbers and all that. The ride got pretty brisk and I saw 105mph . . . twice. I feel pretty good about this plug and plan on buying one of those kits!
  19. For the longest time, I have been riding my bike with the petcock in reserve and have had no issues. Well last night on the way home from work on I94 north of Chicago, I ran out of gas with 4.7 miles on the countdown milage indicator. The worst I have ever pushed it is 26 miles (with the petcock in reserve). Never again. From now on I ride in normal and only use reserve when needed. I'm gonna start watching milage a little closer again also and not rely on that IDIOT light. Kevin
  20. Well picked the bike up Friday 82 miles later back to the shop DEAD Battery 4th time in the shop for same-thing. they said they are going to call Yamaha Tuesday. what I said was don't care what it takes the bike needs to be fixed. If it is not took care of soon I think its time to ask for a new bike. This one has been in the shop 3 weeks out of a month all started with 996 miles on the bike what are the chances
  21. I picked it up at 1:00 PM and have it at the house. I have taken pictures, but someone needs to remind me how to show them on a post. Exceptionally clean '89 1100 with 11,000 or so miles and great tire. I saw it last week while in Marion NC and made the deal this morning. Now how about some help with where to get engine gaurds and how to post the pix.
  22. Hi everyone i just picked up a 2001 RSV with 113000klm was wondering how many miles at these bikes good for before any big trouble starts . thanks
  23. this is what i had left after 21.3k miles......
  24. On the spur of the moment I decided to ride out to California to surprise my brother for his 60th b-day. Left Salt Lake City on Thursday morning on my '08 RSV and 13 hours later arrived at friends house near LA after 784 miles, even with a 140 mile detour. It was 35 degrees when I left but warmed up with time and heading South. Spent 3 days in Santa Barbara then headed home on Monday, 793 miles and 13 hours later pulled into my driveway. I had forgotten how beautiful that ride is. All I can say is I LOVE THIS BIKE. Cruised at 70-80 mph most of the way and the bike just hummed nicely all the way. The electronic cruise control and my mp3 player made the trip so easy, I wasn't really tired at all. Just under 1800 miles total.
  25. Last weekend, I noticed a mysterious red light come on when I rev limited in 2nd gear. I'd never seen it before, and the manual was inconvenient. So I checked the oil level and was shocked to see that it was at the bottom of the sight glass, and looked rather black. I just changed the oil, and it was black and nasty. Clearly, she burned oil since the last change (about 4000 miles ago). I changed her oil just before my trip to Zion National Park, Four Corners, etc. I towed a trailer on that trip, so 3500 miles of those 4000 were towed. She's never burned any oil (except when I overfilled her, before I realized she took less than the manual). She just rolled over 50,000 miles. What causes a bike to burn oil? Dave
