  1. I am new to the venture world and am curious on what to expact as far as gas mileage. Around town i pretty much follow the speed limit but on the highway I sometimes get up to 80 or 85
  2. Just wondering... what is the best motor oil (next change) for a high mileage RSV with approximately 100k?
  3. Hello...I am newer here and looking to buy a 2000 - 2005 Venture. What all is displayed on the LCD display? I know speed, both MPH & KPH, fuel gauge, trip ODO. & bike mileage. Is there a clock or volt meter? I just can't tell from pics online. Thank You.
  4. 74k on my ’06 RSV and running great, but time was long past due for the valve adjustment. I have done all maintenance work in the past but the valve adjustment with shims and special tools seemed a little much for me, and wow, did I guess that right. After reading a post a week or so ago and seeing Muffinman’s comments I decided to give him a call and make an appointment to take my RSV to his place in NC. He was great, ordered new plugs, gasket set, fuel filter and he had the shims we were likely to need. He said something about color tuning and I said ‘what’s that” I balance the carbs my self. He said we should do it. What a difference. Here is the story, my RSV for the first 50K or so always went to reserve tank at 200 miles, like clock work, almost never varied more than a mile or two, last 10K or so it was looking for the reserve tank around 175 miles. Fuel mileage, was always 42-44mpg for the first 50K the started dropping to 38-42 lately. Well we did the valves, one intake tight by .001 and two exhaust open by .004, not bad enough to cause any damage yet, nor would I think any effect on mileage. The carb balance was off a little but not too bad, but the color tuning really made a change. Here is what we have now, noticeably more power in 2nd,3rd &4th and get this, mileage very, very carefully checked and getting 46.8 mpg, ½ of the mileage check was with two up and the other ½ solo. Now the bike was looking to go to reserve an 214 miles instead of 200 miles as when new, 175 miles lately. We spent a solid 6 hours, and we both worked, I don’t believe any one could do the job in less than 8 hr, Muffinman did a fabulous job and although a lot work I had a good time working with him, and I would say that unless your really good it’s not a job to mess with by your self, there are some parts that I doubt one would ever figure out with help. Great job, thanks Jeff
  5. I've read some posts about fuel mileage, but didn't find the answers I need. Brand new, '09 TD, less than 600 miles. Crappy fuel mileage. I know the odometers are off, so that means I am getting 30 and less mpg. What if anything can I do, or tell the tech to do at the first service? We've got a 1000 mile/24 hr CVMA ride the first week of Aug. I need to better the mpgs by then if possible. Thanks for any and all help. I like this bike much better than my '07 R*, and know that I will never be able to match that fuel mileage. I just want to get it in the range of high 30's, low 40's. Thanks much, Eric Robbins
  6. I have always loved my avon tires on the 1st Gen and Love them with this 2nd Gen I have enough tread for my trip to Don's Maintenance Day I was planning to get my tires done there You members with the 2nd Gens have a variety of tires .What the max mileage you got from your front and rear tires and what make are they I know that when I had the avons on the rear average wa 12,000 miles on the rear A little past the wear bars
  7. Well, I decided it has been over a year since my last mid-life crisis, so I had better get on it. I haven't had a nice vehicle (other than motorcycles) for myself in MANY years. The wife always seems to get the new car and I get the hand me down. So I decided my F-250 was burning too much diesel at $4.00 a gallon. Although this car doesn't get a ton more mileage, it does get a little more and the gas is cheaper. It's a 2006 Ford Mustang with 38,000 miles. Just the standard v6 model but a good compromise between the look I wanted and the better gas mileage I wanted. Looks brand new inside and out. I added window tint and a new radio so far...but this thing is like when you start adding to our bikes...there just isn't any end in sight to the accessories I could add. Some things in the future that might be added: hood scoop, window louvers, rims, chin and rear spoilers...It's a fun car. I don't drive it hard (never been a speed demon) but it can get up and go when needed. I'm a happy boy with a new toy!
  8. Hello, Looking for some input from all you knowledgeable Venture riders. My 2003 RSV has just turned over 95,000 km. Last year I put on Barons Bag Slash pipes - was told no need to re-jet, so I didn't. Prior to this I had noticed a slight reduction in fuel economy but nothing I worried about...but it continued to worsen to the point of only getting about 300 km to a tank, some days 269, depending on the riding I was doing. No backfiring or performance issues noted. I put back the stock pipes this year and am on my second or third tank of gas after storage for the winter. The plugs were replaced prior to winter storage. While in storage I cleaned and re-oiled both K&N filters. I went through 15 litres of fuel going about 169 km on the way to work at speeds around 120 - 130 km/h. On the way home, I went through 11.4 litres of fuel for about 159 km on the way home travelling more like 130-140 km/h. I rode faster home, which is predmonintley up hill and went through less fuel on the way home than I did going downhill to work. So, doing the math, I got about 26.58 mpg on the way to work (downhill and in the sunshine) and 32.73 mpg on the way home (raining in part of the way, going uphill and faster after through the rain. These are far cries from 40 to 50 mpg spec'ed. I popped in to one shop....they are going to go through the Yamaha update manuals. Initially, they thought maybe I oiled the air filters too much and perhaps some of the oil plugged up the K&N's. (I did give them a good amount of oil, but didn't think it was excessive-like no puddles or dripping) I called a Yammy shop and they quoted the new estimated fuel economy saying I should be getting 51 mpg and should consider a carburetor rebuild. One other knowledgeable colleague of mine seconded that opinion. (additional question - what has changed to give such a difference in estimated fuel economy? 42 mpg to 51. Are the carbs the same? If not, can the 03 be rebuilt to the same specs as the 2011?) So, I am throwing it out there for your learned opinions. I will try some seafoam tomorrow after my night shift - can't hurt... $19 on the way to work, $17 on the way home foe 370 km...for economy, I may as well drive my Ford Escape, the way it is now. Thanks for your guidance.
  9. With the price of gas and the Lower mpg's of ethanol contaminated fuel. Is there an additive that would increase the btu's to increase mileage? Or is this even possible?
  10. my 2010 Wings fuel mileage seems to be all over the place from 35 to 40 miles per gallon. I got 1600 miles on the bike using premium gasoline 92 octane BP or 89 oct from Sunoco. Seem to get better mileage from the 89. I know its how and were you ride but with my RSTD i got 44 miles per gallon on mid-grade gas always put in 2 oz s of marvel mystery oil. I know there will be a difference from a 4 to 6 cylinder but always averaged 44 mpg. How many miles will it take for my Goldwing to break-in and get a good average and what are other Goldwings getting. When i ride highway its 65 to 70 mph and 45 to 50 on our main roads down here in florida. Will be switching to synthetic oil on the next change and have factory Dunlop's tires.
  11. I have an 08 RSV. In June, I was getting an average of 44 MPG (). In July, I changed the plugs to NGK Iridium, replaced the air filters with K&N, and replaced the fuel filter with a Purolator (??) recommended on this board. Since then, my gas mileage has dropped of dramatically (avg of 38 mpg, one-up, highway driving @ 55). Last month, in an effort to understand my loss of gas mileage, I pulled the plug caps (which all measured @ 9.6k ohms), and changed the plugs back to the stock NGKs, and synched the carbs. Over the last month, my gas mileage has dropped to approx 34 MPG...this represents a 10 MPG drop over the last 5 months... Today, I cleaned and charged the air filters...I'm not overly optimistic at this point. Any help or suggestions would be reatly appreciated...I'm running out of ideas!
  12. I don't own a Venture as of yet but it has to be on the top of my list for my second bike. It's an awesome machine from what I can tell and is definately a bargain(especially used) compared to the other popular baggers out there, Harley and Goldwing. I was wondering how much mileage can you get out of these Ventures? Here's an ad posted in my area for a 2000 Venture with what seems to me to be fairly high mileage: http://halifax.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-street-cruisers-choppers-2000-Yamaha-Royal-Star-Venture-W0QQAdIdZ238464566 That 139450 klms is 86,650.21 miles BTW, just to clear that up. The price seems pretty decent and the bike looks to be in good shape, it's just the mileage that kind of concerns me. I know that the seller is a stand-up guy, a machinist by trade and also a motorcycle mechanic. He wheels in deals in buying used bikes, fixes them up and only sells them when they have a clean bill of health. So, I wouldn't hesitate buying a bike from him, that's a plus. But again, what about the mileage?
  13. yep another fuel mileage thread but with a twist.. We always hear of people grumpling about getting bad mileage while others boast how fuel efficient their bikes are compared to others.. I constantly ride with the same buddy on long road trips so it gives a good comparison to riding styles, mods and so on as to what works best for fuel mileage.. In the past two years, he's always gotten better mileage than I have, consistently every time until this last trip.. Even after visiting Goose in Texas and getting his expertise at hand to tweak the valves, carbs and so on, my mileage never got any better than my buddy.. In the USA, I would always pump in about .2 to .5 of a gallon more per tank full runs.. In Canada, it would equate to about 1.5 litres or so per tank load.. Except for this last trip!! FINALLY.. the whole trip I finally managed to get consistently every time better mileage than he did.. sometimes by a large margin! yes! lol And I think it's ONLY because I finally remembers to clean out my K&N air filters! When I was down in TX, we pulled the air filters out and just gave them a shake to knock off anything loose but didn't wash and re-load them as they were still very nice and red.. The other week I pulled them off the bike and gave them a proper wash.. and oh my gosh.. filthy doesn't even come close to describing these filters! Even though they looked red and fresh, they were filthy! And right away, after re-loading them, I started to notice much better mileage across the board and under all conditions.. wow.. yeah I think I'm going to be keeping a better schedule on these puppies from now on.. As for mileage? Yeah.. it got me thinking why so many can boast 45-48 mpg while others can get better than 35 or 38 mpg.. I think a lot of it is on how you ride and at what speeds.. Running the bikes anywhere around 50 to 60 on the speedo will get me anywhere from 44 to 48 mpg on this last trip through the White Mountains, while doing 70 - 85 mph on the I90 series will get me 35 to 38 mpg.. (even at 85 we were the SLOW vehicles, wow) So yeah.. basically, clean your air filters.. just cuz they look clean, doesn't mean they are clean.. Its basic common sense maintenance but I totally let it slip past me.. sigh.
  14. What kind of gas mileage are you getting on your trikes.Mine is an 07 Hannigan trike and I am getting around 30 miles per gallon, riding between 60 & 65 mph .My brother in law is getting his Rsv back from the trike shop Monday .The guy building the trike said I should be getting better mileage than that.Should I be getting mine checked/:95:
  15. Here is a few pictures of my rear elite 3 at only 7400 miles, front is down in the wear bars. I won't be going back with these any time soon I'm not sure how you guy's are getting better mileage. Bike 90% ridden two up, tire pressure checked before every ride. 16. Since they appear more aerodynamic, do the 1st Generations get better gas mileage than the 2nd Generations?
  17. I ride an 08 RSTD. I just made a trailer to pull behind my bike. Up here in SD, we usually run about 70-75 mph out in the country. My trailer weighs about 130 pounds empty, loaded about 185. Anyway I normally avg about 36-38 mpg. I did a test pull with the trailer the other day, putting about 80 miles or so on it. I did some in town pulling, so it wasnt all highway miles. I avg 27 mpg. Is this about right? Or should I try and stay out of overdrive and keep the revs up a bit more to keep from lugging the motor? I am a little disappointed in the mileage, but i knew it would drop. I figured that the trailer isnt that heavy so maybe id be ok. What is everybody else getting pulling a trailer? thanks in advance. Since the trailer is new and Im not used to it yet, im packing everything on the bike. The trailer is gonna have to wait......
  18. How important is the stock exhaust to how the Venture runs? The bike I have has had the exhaust changed for some short little after market mufflers, my fuel mileage sucks, around 30 ,31 to the gallon, does anyone think that the reduced back pressure of these after market mufflers could be part of or most of or any of the cause for such mileage and lack of low end power? The bike has a great top end, but the low end is a little less than I figure I should have with the bike, 3000 rpm and above its a fast accelerating monster, below that it accelerates but kinda on the soft side if you know what I mean.
  19. I recently bought a 1983 Venture 1200. I only get 25-28 miles per gallon. the previous owner sent it to Topeka Powersports for poor fuel mileage. They installed new Diaphragm assemblies. Is this milelage typical? or is something wrong? I have talked to two other venture riders, one on a poker run, and one @ the truck stop, and apparently fuel milelage is low. On the Venture history page, it states the average fuel mileage @ 42.5 mpg, it states the capacity @ 5.3 gallons, the owners manual says 5 quarts. The warning light came on and I put 3.92 gallons in. Trying to decide if another carb overhaul is warranted this winter? Gilbert
  20. Well a few months ago I traded my final drive to get a Drive with the Vmax gears. Long story short I am not happy with it and am sorry I changed. Its too far the other way so I decided to go back to the original. I purchased a rear from Pinwall that was on a 1999 that has 70K on it. My bike has 17K. Before I put it in should I reseal and rebuild it or at that much mileage are they still tight? I plan to powdercoat it in the winter as part of the firebike theme anyway. Maybe Ill just do it now. What are your thoughts? Just put it in or do the rear first? Scotty
  21. Before installing the needle shim mod my mileage was somewhere right around 32 mpg. That mileage was determined by filling my tank nearly to the brim, riding at 70 - 75 mph and until my fuel warning light came on; filled up to the brim again, and did it all again; four times. So, I've had these shaved down vinyl shims, purchased here on this site, for some time and decided just tonight to install them. It's done! Heck I am not even sure how much difference there is between the new shims and the stock one. I know stock is .112 in. At idle, of course there would be no difference. Initially it does not seem to rev as quickly as it did before the mod; seems to be too lean now, stutters and bawgs some. Inserting three fingers in the air intate improves its ability to rev. Anyway, I will take it out on the road and run a few tanks through it and report back how this mod affects its mileage and performance. Hope this was worth the time involved working in a garage at 105 degrees. Oh, all the evaluating will be minus the plastic just in case I have to go back to stock.
  22. Ok I have some 67,000 miles under my 2004 RSV and have been on the Dunlop 404 WWW for the most. Last set I changed to the Elite3 Dunlop. I would like to see if any others have had similar findings. Yes I read about folks getting all kinds of diffrent mileage from all the diffrent tires, but I have the following findings and are looking for another opinion. Dunlop 404 Changed at miles Tire Life Miles 05-20-06 11,655 miles 11,655 05-05-07 22,575 miles 10,920 04-20-08 33,530 miles 10,955 07-12-08 43,614 miles 10,084 05-15-09 51,741 miles 8,127 11-10-09 58,950 miles 7,209 Dunlop Elite3 07-22-10 67,141 miles 8,191 Looking to make a change for more mileage than I have been getting. 80% of the time two up and on the back roads in the mountains. I ride hard on the throttle and like I stole it in the curves. Dunlop 404's I had decent mileage but the performace was lacking, however I did not have the awful tractor tire roar that the Dulop Elite 3 has in the curves. Elite 3 performace in all conditions were unfalable but the noise is terrible. I thought the clutch basket noise was bad. Rear shock still has fluid and still holds air with never leaking. Tires are always checked for pressure before it rolls out of the garage no matter if it is just down to the store. Pressure nevers seems to be low. I always run at 41 PSI. Thoughts from the all great would be appreciated!
  23. So I was reading a little while ago on a thread where Goose wanted a different gearing ratio so that he could ride at a little HIGHER RPM to imprive gas mileage. That seems backward. What is the best RPM to be cruising at on this bike??? I come from a 2 cylinder, so there I was used to keeping it low- like 2000-2500ish... Should I be riding this at a higher RPM to get the best mileage? On a second note, when I'm kinda riding hard and gunning it in the higher RPM's, it feels like the transmission is slipping sometimes, and then slowly grabs (over a second or so), almost like the clutch is a little in, even though my hand is off the clutch. That normal?
  24. My wholesome honey and I just got off the Blue Ridge Pkwy to get some gas. I checked my mileage after running about 135 miles and it was 49 mpg.
  25. I bought a Vmax-Venture conversion final drive from John at Sportmax a week ago, it worked great and did make it like a rocket ship on wheels strting out from a stop, but I don't like the lower gearing. I don't pull a trailer or ride two up so the extra power is not needed and I decided I liked the higher gearing after all. I did check the fuel mileage with it installed and it was the same as the old final drive so fuel mileage is not an issue. If anyone would like it, I will trade it straight up for a good low mileage unit that has no problems and looks good. All you will need to do is pay shipping for the swap. I figure that is much less than the 300 plus shipping from John for another one. Just ship me your old one with a prepaid shipping label and I will ship mine back, even up.
