  1. Hi, Any known endemic issues with the ignition key mechanism on these old gals? I went to ride my red '84 to work this morning but I couldn't get the key to turn in the ignition! I have a Yamaha original key as well as a couple of copies of same, NONE would turn in the ignition this morning. All worked fine as usual in all the other locks on the bike and no precursory events have suggested any issues with the ignition mechanism up to now. The bike has sat for a couple of weeks due to weather and my busy life but was thought to be ready to go till this happened. Perhaps the spirits were telling me that today isn't a day to ride and I am grateful that it happened in my own garage and not out in the wilds somewhere but it is a puzzle. I had to come to work on 4 wheels. What info do we have on this sort of behaviour ? Thanks, Brian H.
  2. Could someone please help me with a problem I have found myself in. I have lost the key for my luggage ( trunk and saddlebags) for my 2001 RSV. How dow I get a new key or can a locksmith make one using the lock off the bike. Please help.
  3. Well, got the Fork seals replaced last week. Not too hard to do, no surprises there. Manual says you need to remove the fairing... I say, No you don't. Just need a couple of special tools, and tada, no fairing removal or handlebars either. did the whole job in about two hours. including cleanup It looked like the oil had never been changed, ever. yuck. So I did Guide, and Slide bushings too. Some new sae 10 Yamalube, and it's all set for another 20 years, hehe, well maybe 5. Anyway, next up, Ride the damn thing. If any one is interested, I'll share my tips for non fairing removal. Oh ya, Found the key code, and had new keys made too. No cheap copies. Key code was easier to find than one might think, but that's for another Thread Later, Kerry
  4. I am contemplating changing to different electrical horns and relocating them. In preparation I am checking the wiring for polarity, on/off with the ignition, etc. I am accessing the right side horn. You know, the one that they have aimed right at the exhaust! I expected to find the pink wire hot with the key on, but I find both the pink and brown wires to be hot when the key is on. I have looked at the wiring diagram, guess I just do not understand how the horn button makes these OEM horns work. I expected to be able to ground the after-market horns and connect a lead to the other connector that would become hot when the horn button was activated. OR I would hook up a lead that was hot when the key is on and the other connector would go to the horn button and be grounded when the button is activated. With both leads testing hot with the key on I am lost. I know one or more of you wizards can explain this to me and point me in the right direction. For clarification, I want to install a pair of compact boat horns out front (106 db each). I know most of you prefer the air horn, but this is my story and I'm sticking to it. Thanks for any help I can get. Mel
  5. I stored my 2006 Royal Star Venture in my outside garage in November for the winter. I went to start it today, it would not let me turn the key in the ignition. I tried spraying WD 40 in the ignition but I still can not turn the key. Any suggestions on the cause? I am sure it is the right key.
  6. Sometimes (but not aways) I have a hard time getting the gas cap off my 99 RSV. I have to turn the key and then try to grip the cap with the other hand while turning the key to get it to release. The bib around the opening seems to keep the cap from going down all the way, but not sure. Any ideas would be helpful.
  7. I lost one of the Helmet Locks off of my 2003 Venture. Bought a new one from Yamaha and took it to a locksmith to get it re-keyed to match my other locks. It could not be done. Yamaha has replaced the old lock with one that has an opposite key shape. The old key will not even fit into the new lock. Does anyone have an older lock that they want to get rid of or do you know where I can find old stock?
  8. I was going through the treads this morning and ran across the one where Ky,Rider lost his keys at a rest stop. Uturn posted some blank codes. So I decided I better do it right now or I'll be one stuck somewhere. So I took the codes with me and went down and a couple keys made (only cost me $4.00 a key) so all I have to do is hide one on the bike and I'll be set. Thanks guys for jarring my brain. One less thing I have to worry about.
  9. I went to the Dealer today and was going to go ahead and get a couple of keys made. I had one of my own blanks to be used for a custom key, but thought I would get a couple of more keys cut...YEOW. When the guy at the counter told me the price of the OEM key...$45.60. DANGGGGG The guy did tell me they had some plain blanks they sell, but those were backordered right now... So be careful with that OEM Key...thars gold in that thar key. Wally
  10. I wanted a spare key for travels on my '06 RSMV. A friend said that ACE Hardware had the blanks. I had them cut two keys and both were unable to work the ignition switch. They would operate the trunk and the saddle bags, and turn the ignition from Lock to Off and Off to Lock but would not turn the ignition from Off to On. I went to the dealer who said I might not really want an extra key. The blanks were $46 from Yamaha. I don't remember the Owner's Manual saying anything about a chip in the key, but that much for a key doesn't make sense otherwise. Anyone have the word? Just curious. Mel
  11. Not what ya`ll think, I stopped at a Stop and Rob today after work, go in grab one Item from the shelf and make my purchase... ok all is well, the weather is nice the scoot is running great and I`m all smiles..... I go out to the bike, put my purchase in the trunk, close the lid, reach for my key......hhhhmmmmmmm no Key, not good... I go back in side, look under and over and through every thing that I was near, had 3 teen age boys help me look,,still no go, %$#@ I do not have an extra key.. one of the kids says, hey man, you really should get another key made.... I`m thinking no %$#@... any way, I dig through the trunk again, and there it is, between some papers I had in there..man, 20mins of wondering what the heck I`m gonna do.. and there it was, well I gave each of the kids a buck for helping me look and now I`m here looking for the post of where to get a blank key for the bike... can some one point me in the right direction.. Thanks, Kreg
  12. Had bike serviced and now a light flashed on for a blip and disappeared and I can't find which it is. Lost my manual and not sure it tells you location of lights anyway. Sitting on bike its the furthest left and bottom. It's red but it doesn't come on when you turn the key on. I was really in the gas when it came on so maybe it's to let you know your about to go airborne? Any help is appreciated. 07 RSV by the way.
  13. Under the right side cover (the one above the passenger floorboard) there are 2 relays. The larger one is black and is the flasher relay. The other is blue. Does anyone know what this relay is for? Just noticed today that mine makes a buzzing sound when the key is on and the bike is in gear. Put it in neutral and the buzzing stops. Wondering if this is normal or if the relay is going south for the winter.
  14. OK Someone has had to have had this problem....... The Bike runs great if it starts --- That is the problem --- 2006 RSTD 40,000 miles Normal operation ---- I turn the key The Fuel Pump makes at tick about 3 seconds I pull the choke Bike starts I let it warm up while I get my gear on Off I go Problem ---- Let the Bike sit for a week or so I have the battery tender on Battery checks out fine I turn the key plenty of power The Fuel Pump is silent I pull the choke Bike starts --- Barely an idle -- put put put -- I can not give it any throttle or push the choke or it stalls It puts until it I assume it runs the carbs dry then stalls It can take an hour or so until I can get it to run last time this happened I left it alone I had the shop come and pick it up I got on it in the garage turned the key (Habit) Tic Tic Tic the bike started up as soon as he unloaded at the shop and he cant find anything wrong with it I told him keep it and call me in 2 weeks when it wont start What is it that determines if there is pressure in the carbs When I turn the key what happens next ?????? 5 times this has happened I can recreate the problem just let the Bike sit for a week or so. I have put close to 4,000 miles on it this summer as long as I don't let it sit no problem at all
  15. I know the fuel sender unit is a common problem and I have read through many of the threads that discuss it but I have yet to see this particular question answered. I also read through the service manual and owner's manual and I did not see anything that discussed that particular behavior (although it is likely that I missed it somewhere)... Does your low fuel light come on with the check engine light when you turn the key to the ON position (then go off after the 2 seconds or whatever it is)? I have seen my low fuel light come on and the trip meter switch to the "F trip" meter but it has been a while since I have seen that. Since the last time I have seen it I have had to switch to reserve with no light or f trip meter - but it is inconclusive whether the thing works or not. If it is supposed to come on when the key is turned to the ON position, then I know there is a problem with my unit. EDIT: Pg 8-37 of the owner's manual goes through the diagnostic and it does not say at any point, turn the key ON and see if the dumb thing lights up, so I am inclined to think that it doesn't, but it would be helpful if someone could tell me for sure. Thanks.
  16. My first few days with my ’85 VR and I am trying to work out all the gremlins. I am off to buy the Deka ETX18L battery today as it was obvious that the old battery is not holding up very well. I have a few questions. 1- Is it common to have constant power to the accessory fuse with key off? With key off and hooking up volt meter to ground of battery and accessory fuse I am seeing 8.53 volts, when switch is turned on this jumps to 12 volts. What does this fuse operate? I unplug fuse and everything seems to work fine without it. 2- I followed the directions in the post to override/fool the battery sensor by wiring in a resister however this did not work for me at all I tried both the 1kw and 2.2kw just like the post recommended but neither of them worked for me. Has anyone been able to get this to work? 3- What is the quick and easy way to restore the look of the black plastic panels surrounding the radio and other control panels? I am not ready to tear bike apart just yet so re painting is not an option. Unless you all tell me there is no other option then maybe masking the bike off and painting could be done sooner than later.
  17. I have been stumped for about 1 week now. One sunny day I was riding home from work and my radio just cut out....no power to the tuner where the volume control is. After tracking down which fuse it was, I found that the 10 amp fuse behind the side cover...aka backup fuse, was blown. I figured it was probably an original fuse, changed it out and it worked fine for about 1 week. Then one day it blew shortly after starting, while idleing. So being suspicious I was careful to watch while I put in the new fuse. With the key in the off position I noticed the fuse was arcing while I inserted the fuse....wierd....tried to see if the radio worked by turning the key to acc position...worked fine....turned the key to the on position with the radio on and everything ok....hit the start button and lost radio power. All I can think is that the ignition switch is shorting out??? ANYONE EVER RUN INTO THIS? Please shoot me your ideas or experiances!!!! Thanks, Big Mike:think::think::think::think::think:

    2nd Gen Key?

Hello everyone ! I bought my bike used afew years back a RSV 2006 and it came with only one key with no key tag number. How do I go about getting a spare key either from my local dealer or a lock smith? Do I need VIN number or just my only key to get a second one made? Thanks for your input................ Mark
  19. Went to a locksmith Friday and had a spare key made. He gave me some info that I didn't find on here. If its already been posted, sorry. On your original key there is a number. He said to write it down on the registration and on a piece of paper in your wallet. He told me that any good locksmith can cut you a key using that number if you happen to lose your key and need one in a emergancy. I know that most of us carry a hidden key, but I thought this info was good to know. I guess you really do learn something everyday.
  20. I just ordered a Quadzilla fairing. I was wondering if it is installed so that the power to the fairing is off when the key is turned off?
  21. I have had a problem with my 1999 rsv for about a month now and can't figure out what to do. I first thought it was my fuel pump, but after I drained the carb bowls, the fuel pump worked fine. I have changed the fuel filter, plugs, checked for a vac. leak, I have even poured sea foam in a bowl and before I put the fuel filter on I sucked the sea foam thru to the carb. and let it soak for over 12 hours. I even carbtuned the carb. My problem is that the bike runs good about 1/4 to 3/4 throttle and above that it spits and sputters. It runs excellent for about the first mile when it is cold. Sometimes going down the road and you have 3/4 throttle it sputters and then it will take off and then it starts sputtering again. I even put a bypass key switch on it because I thought the key switch may be going bad. That didn't help either. I'm afraid it might be carb problems, but I am afraid to tear into it because I am a shade tree mechanic. I don't know anything about adjusting floats. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
  22. The stars must have been crossed yesterday. Lost my 05 RSTD key in the sand. Found out my son put the spare key in the locked saddle bag by accident. Had to leave the bike over night in the parking lot. Any suggestion on what can be done. Can the Yamaha dealer cut a new key with vin number. They do not open until 10 PST. Is there a parts number for the blank. Locksmiths at Lake Tahoe want $150 for a mobile but may not have Yamaha keys:fiddle: Thanks Nevada Max
  23. I lost my key at a routine rest stop this past weekend. I looked everywhere back tracking my steps but it just wasn't found. I couldn't believe I had lost it and we were 2 1/2 hours from home. Fortunately I had a spare hidden on the bike that had been there for a few years and never used. That saved our weekend. My lesson learned was that I will always have a spare key hidden on the bike and my in use key will be on a key chain. The rest of the story is that on our return trip we stopped at the rest stop and the lost key had been found and turned in. I'll never know how it got out of my pocket or who found it and turned it in but I learned a lesson. Bill
  24. I went looking for a key blank for my first gen Venture. I had read that the ILCO YH46 X120 was the correct blank but there is a better choice. The keymaster at our local ACE Hardware had the X120 but said the HICO 11010 YH50 was a better match for my OEM key. Of course, it has a flat head, not the Yamaha plastic logo one, but I was looking for one I could stash somewhere on the bike so no problem. ACE UPC # 029069706852. Price = $2.19 plus tax and that includes cutting the blank!
  25. Can anyone direct me to the location of the fuel pump relay on and '04 Venture? I can wire direct and the pump runs fine but get no power when I turn the key to the "ON" position. Anyone else had similar problems? Solutions? Thanks, Chief
