  1. just wondering how difficult it is to install I basket. I'm only semi mechanically inclined but can usally figure things out. is this something that a pro should install for me. I would like to do it myself but don't want to get in over my head. thanks
  2. I'm going to help a friend intall his rear tire on his 1986 venture, and is there a proper way of install the washer/ spacers on the axle. Does anybody have photo or a diagram. thanks in advance
  3. I have to enter this thread since my initial thread. I want to respond to some of the comments generated concerning the install of my Buckeye Performance high output stator install. First, I need to qualify something. My son-in-law did the install. He is a 15 year journeyman mechanic both heavy duty and automotive. In other words, he is a professional in his trade not a backyard mechanic. He did not cut out the connector and hard wire the new stator. My new stator will not leak contrary to all those who said it will. My son-in-law used professional grade material from his shop that in his career he has used countless times. In his fifteen years as a mechanic he has installed probably hundreds if not thousands of stators, alternators and every conceivable type of component found in an electrical charging system. He currently works in an agricultural shop working on tractors, combines, and diesel farm trucks of every description. I have been told that the connector is the weak link. That if you don't hard wire the stator your bike may catch fire and burn. Why is that? I have been told to use 12 gauge or even 10 gauge wire when I hard wire the stator. Why would that be? So here is my answer to all of that. I asked my son-in-law if there was a problem with retaining the connector. He said no. He said that $750,000.00 farm tractors putting out 185amps run it all through an identical little plastic connector. My car's charging system and all trucks cars, tractors, combines etc. all run their power systems through identical plastic connectors. I then asked him in his 15 years as a professional mechanic if he has ever in a manual, workshop, training seminar, or classroom ever seen a big red warning that states something to the effect, "WARNING! IF YOU CHANGE THE STATOR IN THIS TRACTOR, CAR, TRUCK, COMBINE, MOTORCYCLE YOU MUST REMOVE ALL CONNECTORS AND HARD WIRE THE NEW STATOR OR YOUR $750,000.00 TRACTOR, CAR, TRUCK, COMBINE OR MOTORCYCLE WILL BLOW UP AND BURN! He has never in his 15 years as a mechanic seen such a warning. Here is the thing. The wire harness on the OEM stator and on the Buckeye Performance high output stator is 14 gauge wire, not 12 or 10 gauge. If you install 12 or 10 gauge wire in your installation then yes, the probability is good that your new stator will possibly burn. My question is on what premise? Because by inserting a larger gauge wire the 14 gauge wire that is still in the circuit cannot now handle the increased amperage flow from the larger diameter wire and it becomes a weak point or choke point that can potentially cause a fire. The only way the connector will be a problem is if the connector has rust or corrosion built up on the inside. Why is that? Because the rust or corrosion acts as an insulator and the increased amperage can cause it to heat up and possibly catch fire and or melt. If the connector is clean, and free of rust or corrosion it will not present a problem. If it is dirty, rusty or corroded then all you have to do is install a new connector. I do not believe that my connector will not burn or melt. Someone mentioned about the position of the connector, that, and I quote, "Well, when these bikes are assembled you can't really tell where the parts might be because they are all assembled differently and there is no way to tell where the components might be placed." When I sat down and thought about that, I thought it was an odd statement unless I totally misunderstood the reason behind the remark. It left me with the impression that these bikes are assembled randomly by 8 year old, blind drug addicts in a chop shop by throwing parts into the air and seeing where they attach themselves to the frame. To each there own. But I had to comment on all the comments about my stator install burning up and/or failing. I don't think it will fail based on what my son-in-law told me and the work he did. If it does fail, I will be sure to post it as a follow up. But I will also post at the end of the riding season so far so good. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta
  4. I got my Speedo-Healer in the mail and want to install it. I looked at the install pictorial I found and I just have one question. When my speedometer indicates 110 kph I am actually doing 100 kph. When I read the install instructions it mentions activating the km/h to mph conversion feature it states, "You have to program +60.9% (1.609 multiplier) on top of the calibration value you need. I'm thinking this unit is built where metric is the standard and this is not necessary unless you use MPH. Any comments or suggestions appreciated. Chris in Red Deer, Alberta
  5. Okay. Yesterday I tried to install the RK mufflers I got. These are 07s if I remember correctly so they do have a cat. I don't know if that makes any difference on installation. I got a pair of the 31-9920 Chrome clamps. I've spread them out as large as I can make them with a screw driver. I go to put the muffler on and I can only get it on so far. There's about 1/4" of the mating pipe showing still. I've tried using a wood block and a hammer but I don't want to damage any of the upstream exhaust by pounding too hard. I'm thinking of the "Y" weld... don't want to crack that in any way. I used a little anti-seize as someone recommended. The end of the muffler seems to be spreading a bit as I push it on. I'm assuming this is normal. I'm also assuming that the clamp is supposed to go on up to the heat shield and none of the existing exhaust pipe is supposed to show. Let me know if you've experienced a similar situation and what worked for you.
  6. Installed my new F4 windshield today. It's the wide version, 2" inches taller than stock with vent. Really impressed with clarity, thickness, and lack of buffeting after install. It was nice not dealing with looking through the top edge of stock windshield.
  7. Have to replace the front speaker grill. Looking at the parts list online, besides just a nut, washer & bolt to attach the speakers, they also show a collar, a rubber grommet. My current install doesn't have those. Anyone know why they're needed, and if so do you need them on all 4 bolts? file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/Jerry/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot-2.png
  8. Looking to install a auxilary fuel tank and was wondering if we can install fuel line directly to existing line from tank or do we have to install another peckcock then add lines to that? I know that the rsv's are not fuel injected but with the fuel pump set up i'm wondering if it's the same.
  9. I just picked up a spare 1st Gen gas tank to put into the '84 and am thinking of creaming it before I install, and having never done one I'm looking for insight...
  10. Ok well I ran into a SWEET deal on some close-out stuff at the HD dealer. I have picked up a safety chrome tip for the front fender, some neat lighted fork covers and a seat-pad that measures out to be the right height and width but about 1 inch long. Snagged all of this for 65 bucks!!! I also have decided to install an axillary power port, but have no idea where to put it, any ideas? Well that is about it for now. Course you know my wife thought that this was going to be a get it up and running and go, well guess not.LOL. Shaun
  11. Saw these on Flea-Bay and its spring tune-up time. I'm replacing the whole wire this year. They have them on Flea-Bay too only about 15 bucks more but a little harder to install. Warden with her little hands comes in handy sometimes. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VENTURE-XVZ1200-XJ550-FZ700-NGK-Spark-Plug-Cap-Set-/180647432080?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a0f6d0f90
  12. Anybody care to share pics of their dually install? I've ordered a set and will be installing shortly, just curious how others have installed. Thanks cs..
  13. I am considering an EFM auto clutch for my 2008 rsv. Anyone have one on their rsv? Do you like it? Was it an easy install?
  14. I bought a new Dell Inspiron R17 w/windows 7 - really getting tired of it I'm just about ready to buy a full version of XP Pro and install. I don't care about anything except running a particular program that I just had to reload because it disappeared this morning Problem is it takes nearly 2 hours to re-load :bang head: The question is - can I load XP Pro on this Dell ?
  15. Got a nice for Christmas but did not come with instructions. Any one offer advice on how to install this bad boy?
  16. What is the best gauge set to use for the 2nd Gen. the sunpro 2 inch or 11/2 inch to put into the cassette area. Who had the mod kid for doing the install? Thanks
  17. How are you mounting them??? How are you weatherproffing them??? No need to re-invent the wheel. Looking for ideas that are working and pictures if possible. Im going with this set up unless someone has a better option. This looks like a nice clear install that will protect it nicely. I visited all I could in here through search feature and rthough this is a old post it looks to be the best option. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=55068&highlight=garmin
  18. Well I ordered a RSV hitch from hillis73. It arrived today and I am very impressed. Great quality, design and finish. The Photos don't do it justice. It's design also gives me a place to install a mud flap. I would and will recommend this hitch for everyone. Thanks you, Hillis Shamue
  19. I know that to many of you a 450 mile trip is just like a quick trip around the block. But for me this will the most monumental motorcycle trip I have ever conceived of. My one day record for riding was the 2009 WI MD where it was a 90 mile trip from my house to the site, then we went for about an 80 mile ride, then the 90 miles back home. OK so I'll never make an Iron butt, but I am in the running for a marshmallow butt award. The projects that must be completed before I can undertake this epic (to me) journey are; (in no particular order) 1. Repair HI-LO headlight switch. Done, it had a lot of crud/corrosion on the contacts. 2. Install trailer hitch on bike. FINALLY done with this one 3. Wire bike for trailer. Done 4. Build a trailer. Done. 5. Find and repair coolant leak. Done 6. Find and repair leak in rear tire. Hmmmm..... The leak seems to have gone away by itself. 7. Find a way to mount and wire my GPS. Got the electrical Done and just have to fab up some kind of mount. 8. All of the normal Spring maintenance that must be done before the first ride. Done and took a 80 mi shake down ride. 9. Repair storm damage to tent from the last time I used it, 4 years ago. Done, tent is good to go. 10. Grease rear wheel pins and install new HH rear pads. Got the brake pads changed, will save greasing for MD Wish list items; 11. Build and install receiver hitch for bike. The Receiver hitch is finally done, painted, and mounted for the last time. 12. Finish making my first run of valve shim tools. Finally the first new tool is finished. Making up the rest will be easy if this one actually works. 13. Would like to get a new full face helmet for the trip. Thanks to Mr BIG TOM I will have a new Helmet for the trip. 14. Buy and install driving/fog lights. I got the KC HiLites installed but they will have to stay with the stock halogen bulbs till I get more time after MD. So much to do and so little time left. Working on the bike is the hard part, it is kept in a tiny 8x10 storage shed that it has to share with all of the yard tools. I can not even put it up on the center stand in the shed and still be able to close the door, and I do have to be able to close and lock the door every night or the shed will be empty by morning. OK, I'll stop whining now.
  20. Ok, been reading up on the install on the springs and there is some good stuff about installing progressive springs, the problem i have and cant find the answer to is how long and what size is the pvc spacer is, the springs i got came out of of a set of forks and they had no spacers in them, do you realy need the spacers ? it said to cut the spacer in half that came with springs, sence i did not buy these new and there was no spacer in there to begin with i am lost, does the space go on the top or the bottem, help if you will.
  21. I have been using bluetooth headsets for operation of my Yeasu ham radio for about a year. It worked very well but I could not use the same headset with all of the onboard electronics. If I was going to need intercom and CB, I had to switch to a wired system. I got tired of changing headsets on my helmet and decided to integrate all the electronics into one system. Since this upgrade is fairly extensive and will require a lot of disassembly of the bike, I decided to complete a couple other upgrades at the same time. Here are the planned upgrades: 1. Upgrade/replace antennas for CB and Ham Radio 2. Install antenna ground plane to improve antenna operation 3. Install interface for GPS with bluetooth phone and Ham Radio into existing audio system 4. Install fuse block to clean up electrical connections 5. Install LEDs on front half of bike to compliment rear half lighting 6. Install auxiliary LED turn signals for visibility from the sides and off angle I have been collecting the required items for some time. Here is a photo of the interface from Kennedy Technology Group, Inc. http://gallery.me.com/k1oj/100179/IMG_1983/web.jpg?ver=12959141270001/ The antennas and ground plane are out in the garage. I have about 2 weeks to complete this project before I need to use the radio. I will attempt to document this process as I progress.
  22. I have a friend who rides a BMW 1200 , he is interested in buying something ( should be a Venture) that he can use or add to his BMW so we can communicate, Would be great it there was something he could use so we could talk on the CB other than him having to install a CB on his bike. any suggestions? or is there an inexpensive CB that would work somehow
  23. Hi guys, Happy New Year.. what better way to spend the evening than in the garage working on the bikes eh? (gosh I need to get a life!!) My new shiny WORKS Performance shock finally arrived today and wow, it's real purty! Almost too purty to mount it under a bike. Its all preloaded and ready to go. Though I'm mechanically inclined and have all the tools to install this shock, is there something out of the ordinary or 'don't forget to do this' notes I should do to install this shock properly and such? Oops, just read through the manual and looks like i have to pull the rear wheel, bags, fender and pipes to change the shock?! Ouch.. is this true? Thanks in advance for any advice or comments Cheers
  24. My loving bride got me alittle safety chrome..... now I gots to install them!!
