  1. Hello everyone. I am looking for a clear headlight lens. Anyone know where I can get one at? Bill
  2. Just wanted to thank the members of the forum and the moderators. I've had my 03 RSV for a week, have received plenty of great information here and gladly paid my dues. This bike had been popping headlight fuses almost daily. I had started taking the normal diagnostic paths of disabling external devices, tracing power leads for accessories, still the popping fuses. Carrying an allen key and box of fuses in my pocket was the norm. Before going down the path of a more detailed diagnoses or takign it to the dealer, I decided to do a search on "headlight" here and stumbled across a problem that seems to plague many who have the added passing lamp kit; pinched wires in the steering head stop and that is my problem! Repired the connection, wire tied it back and problem solved. Again, thank you all for your contributions to the site. Without, I may have spent many more hours and dollars on this one. Andrew
  3. My headlight is not working on my bike. When the headlight started to go out they would work every once in a while. The bulb is fine. Is there a fuse box or something else that might be causing the light not to work? This is a new bike for me. What is the easiest way to jumpstart the bike? The battery is run down and I need to get it started. How do I get to the battery?
  4. I just added a Drivers backrest from Diamond R, and Headlight and driving light covers.
  5. Boy Guys and Gals, I could really use some help on this one! I am an IDIOT when it comes to electric problems! I had the 86'VR in the garage to replace the starter solenoid and after the work, the headlight will not come on when I turn on the key. No low beam or high beam. So far I have checked the fuse (good) and sprayed contact cleaner in the ignition switch with no good results. PLEASE help me!!! Earl
  6. First of all I’ve got to say that I love this site and all the ideas, opinions and constructive criticism that flow through it. Some of the bantering that goes on is pretty funny too… like what color is the fastest, lol! ... Isn’t that silly, we all know that Black Cherry is the fastest and that 2nd Gen rules! So I’ve been wanting a new ‘Do you see me now’ horn because as you know stock horns just don’t make the cut. Stock horns are nice when you want to politely get someone’s attention without shouting but that’s about it. Having said that my goal was to find an alternate location for a horn, install a separate switch and keep the stock horn operational. I lucked out on a Bad Boy horn for $29. but couldn’t find a decent switch for a fair price so here’s what I did… I came across a left hand control cluster off an old Kawasaki, it’s almost identical to one on the venture. Long story short I cut the horn switch off the bottom of the cluster, made a separate switch out of it and installed it under my existing horn switch. Now I can use either horn (or both) and the switch is in reach of my thumb. Although it was a tight fit I made a little bracket and mounted the horn under the front faring to the left of the cassette player/amp (black box). Being under the faring the horn is still quite loud and its right up front where I want it. The horn is on a separate fused circuit through a relay wired directly to the battery. The other thing I did (with some help from our tech library) was a headlight mod. I now have the Tri Bar headlight with passing lamps to match. I’ve upgraded the headlight bulb to an ultra and the passing lamp bulbs to the PIA H-3. There is not much more I want to do to the bike besides ride it... although I do like the idea of swapping out the cassette player for some gauges... does it ever end!?! Here are some pictures including a before and after of the headlight...
  7. Is there an alternate headlight of the automotive variety that fits my second gen RSTD and does'nt cost $70?
  8. I stand before you today, a broken man. I removed the trim, headlight lens, windshield, dash cover, Removed the CMS, soldered it, put it all back together and that pesky headlight STILL doesn't work. I will say that Icons and information on the CMS work now that never worked before. But NO HEADLIGHT! I am now officially asking any Electrical Guru if they would be willing to take a shot at this problem. I am willing to travel and I hope there is someone close enough that I can make the ride one way in 24 hours. If I thought GEORGE S would adopt me, I would be headed to his house as we speak. I am laid off right now and have some time so I would like to get this fixed. I might add that I do have some wiring issues and this could be the problem but as I stated in the Tag Line I am "Electrically Retarded" and need some help. Anybody Want Some Company? Earl
  9. Ok. I am having the problem with the headlight icon staying on my display, and getting the flashing red warning on my '83 Venture. I started out with the headlight, and the battery flashing, because I just put a new battery on, and the terrible whine in my speedometer. I did the 1k ohm resistor fix, and took care of the battery icon...great fix, thanks. I also removed the instrument panel and greased the speedo bushing with white lithium grease...works great...thanks. I then resoldered all of the connections for the big white connector, plus a few more cold joints that I found. After all of that, the only problem I still have, is the headlight icon, and flashing red light. All of my lights work fine. Any more Ideas, before I get out the schematic, and pick the bike apart wire by wire?

    horn

when i hit the button for the horn the one up front doesnt sound like its activating all the way. at night i can see my headlight dimming everytime i hit the horn. the one on the right bottom seems to do fine any helo?
  11. My 83's previous owner had run a switch to the headlight. In working through some electrical issues I decide to tackle the headlight. I have low beam but when I use the switch for High beam nothing, no light or indicator light. What I have done so far: All connections have been taken apart and cleaned with contact cleaner making sure they are tight. Solder cold joints on CMS (this got the low beam working) and CLASS. Gave the handle bar switch for high beam a shot of cleaner but did not take it apart. Looking at the wiring diagram and reading in the service manual it is looking like I need to check the reserve lighting unit - if I just knew where it was and what I looks like. CMS show no fault codes now so I'm getting closer. Anyone have a clue as to what to check next. The information here on the website has been wonderful in bringing this ride back to life. Thanks All, Steve
  12. I'm addiment about driving with my bright lights "ON" all the time. With over 300,000 miles and thousands of trips in 44 years of biking, I'm positive this has "Saved My Life" more than once. Hundreds of other safety conscience habits have helped too . As the leader of 20+ riders I ask all my loyal followers to use there brights too. I'm adding a second headlight or driving lights and second stop/taillight to all my bikes, even my dual sport. Bulbs are cheap, hospitalization isn't! If they don't see you they can't avoid you! Please do the same.
  13. Do you have to split the fairing to install the headlight Visor?
  14. I had the "dim low beam" issue which most of you say is likely the CM or maybe the switch. The shop "fixed" this by putting a jumper in the system. If I read the wiring diagram in the service manual correct, the jumper is connected to the headlight wires (G/R and Y/G) and taps into the headlight switch on the switch side (Y and G) The indicator light, which was partially on before is now off, but the CM warning light is on. I haven't fully disected the connector, but it appears they did not disconnect and re-route, but merely added a secondary pathway. I'm not sure why this would cause a fault on the CM as I didn't have one before. Since I've got everything apart I'm planning on pulling the CM and re-soldering it and then pull the jumper. Hopefully that will get rid of the flashing warning.
  15. Hi guys! Well the cold weather hit and I went a few too many days without starting my firstgen VR and bought a Black & Decker trickle charger at a local store. Its a sweet little unit that comes with three interchangeable connectors, 1 that you can bolt onto the terminals and leave it on there for quick plugin, a 2nd with alligator clips and a 3rd thats a cigarette lighter plug. I was preparing to pull the false tank cover and bolt on the first when I remembered...Hey, my venture has a cigarette lighter, so I took the easy way and plugged the trickle charger in that way. An hour later and Vroom! Vroom! it started right up. Great news right? Well, yes except for one little thing. I noticed my headlight and the lights on my instrument cluster gauges were not on. Im pretty sure I popped a fuse but before I tear in there I was hoping to find a diagram for the fusebox on the first gens. I would like to know if I can safely replace the blown fuses with fuses that are a little larger...and I mean a LITTLE larger. Im not going to throw 20 amp fuses in there and defeat the whole purpose of having fuses in the first place. Im also not in a huge hurry because having the headlight NOT light up saves a ton of battery and makes these cold winter starts...but I will need to fix it before I take the bike back out in the spring. Another crazy idea I had that Im inviting comments on.... I know you legally MUST have a working headlight on a motorcycle, but has anyone considered putting a switch in...maybe out of the way...opposite the hazards switch, expressly for cold starts? I just keep thinking what an advantage it would be to have one when your bike battery is giving its all and its not quite enough....wouldnt it be great to shut off the headlight and have that extra power for starting? Feedback is welcome!
  16. Anyone here using the Sylvania H4 Super Plasma GT-X Anti-Vib headlight bulb? Cheapest price I could find is $42.50 for this bulb. Is this bulb worth that kinda $$$ ??
  17. Hi. I've seen alot of traffic here on how to wire driving lights. Using a relay is the ONLY way to go, but there's the decision of whether the relay should trigger off the HI beam or not. When I first installed them, I wanted them to get power only when the headlight is on, and thru a separate switch. Therefore, I can turn them on or off, but if I leave them on when starting the bike they go off during starting (with the headlight) to reduce battery draw. So that's what I did, and it works well. However, the lights are blinding to oncoming traffic so if I'm on a country road and encountering frequent but not steady traffic, I'm constantly flipping both the HI/LO switch and the driving light switch (car coming, put headlight on LO and turn DL's off). That's why it's nice to have them on the HI beam circuit, but sometimes I like to have the LO beam on with the DL's (on my dirt road, for example). . So I had an epiphany which allows me the best of both worlds. I replaced the DL switch with a double-throw type of the same size. Center position is OFF, fwd position is ON (still tied to HL circuit as before), and back position is tied to the HI beam circuit. This is all for triggering the relay; the main DL power still goes thru the relay. It's pretty slick :-) Jeremy

    Headlight problem

Hi everyone. First day here. I have a 1983 Venture Royale. It's a great bike. Had it about six months now. It had 38,000 when I bought it and I have put about four thousand miles on it since then, just puttin around town mostly, here in Eugene Oregon. Well, I would like to take some long jaunts on it eventually, but I am currently going through cancer therapy, well, actually, I have finished the radiation and chemo program and accordin to the docs the cancer is gone, so YAAA!, but I am still healing from the healing, and still seeing doctors real regular, so now is not the time for me to be taking any extended vacations. But I sure am dreaming of the day. So meanwhile, I ride the bike to the store and back, and wherever I need to go whenever it isn't too cold or rainy. Otherwise its our trusty old VW Westphalia camper. I like to keep my rigs in good repair so they may be counted on on a moment's notice any time day or night. So I am bothered by an annoying problem with my bike's headlight. Sometimes lately I turn on the key and there is no headlight. If I turn it off and wait awhile and try to start it again sometimes it comes on again. Well, eventually it does. A couple times I had to get on the bike and start it up and ride it around the parkig lot and stop and start it up again, and then the light would come on. So first thing I did was check the fuses. The headlight fuse was the worst of the bunch as it turned out, with one side being soldered into place. But it worked. And it worked when the headlight was working too. So the fuse did't see to have anything to do with the problem, even though that fuse holder will need replacing soon as I find one. So I went over to the local bike repair guy and he said he had never worked on one of these, and he scratched his head and looked at it. I am sure he could fix it but at $50 per hour I am not sure how long that might take. I went over the the Yamaha dealers and talked with the guy in the shop there and he was very turned on by my Venture Royale. He said that all the mechanics there had only seen one of these in pictures in a book. None of them had ever actually SEEN one for real. They loved the bike. But they charge big money to search out problems like that. I am not ready to fork over that big money yet, especially when I know from many years experience that it is probably just one little wire somewhere that doesn't like the Oregon Rain. It's just that the bike is still very new to me, and I don't even fully understand yet how to remove all the plastic covers without breaking the aging plastic tabs that hold them in place. (Broke one already.) So I got a lot to learn. And there is a lot of spaghetti wire to look at. Fortunately I have a good book with excellent wiring diagram. Unfortunately though, I am no wiring expert and those diagrams are little more than pretty technical pictures to me, kinda scarey, So, the first thing I think I will do is ask if any of you have experienced a similar problem with the headlight on your Venture Royale? Or if any of you have any helpful pointers of where I might begin at tracing down the problem? Thanks, RomTom
  19. Has anyone successfully replaced the stock headlight assembly with a aftermarket headlight, want a different look in the front,i f I can't change it anyone got a suggestion where to purchase HID
  20. Anyone have a recommendation for a first gen headlight replacement? Thanks, Vince 84' Venture
  21. Can anyone send me a copy of the wiring diagram for the headlight (low/high switch feed) I have lent or lost my service manual. It's heck when you get old! Thanks in advance. Oh, just in case....it is for a second generation Venture
  22. First, let me introduce myself....I just purchased a 2009 RSV and have only had it a week. Enjoying it so far.... I've ordered a number of add-ons so I'll probably be looking here for help. I searched and couldn't find an exact explanation of how to remove the front fairing (without damaging anything!). I would assume I need to remove the bolt under the headlight, and the three hex bolts on each side, but I don't know what to do next? I just don't want to break plastic tabs or crack anything. How do I remove the chrome around the headlight and the chrome piece below the windshield? Any specific instructions would be so helpful. Thank you and look forward to meeting some of you! David
  23. I've had this happen a couple of times now, so I know it is not a fluke. When I lock the handlebars in the turned position, all lights come on, except the headlight. I've read the manual and can not find anything concerning this. Is this an indication that the ignition switch is developing a problem or what?
  24. It's been a while since I've been stumped, but I am right now. I am working on Dave Pankows '86 and for some reason I dont have the headlight working now and it worked when he pulled into the driveway. I have replaced the fuse block with one of the upgrades to push type spades. I have done half a dozen of better of these with no issues. Everything appears to be working normally on the fuse block as I have tested to make sure of power from one side through the fuse to the other lead side. The bike starts and runs all the lights work, signals, emergency flashers, running lights, but no headlight. It's a new bulb as I checked it and the filaments are good, I just have no power to the switch. Now mind you that I am not good with chasing wires from a diagram. I have a repair manual but it might as well be in swahelie as far as understanding wire diagrams. I'm not sure if I have to have all the electronics hooked back up for the headlight to work. I dont think so, but I've been wrong before If some of you electrical types could help this dumb welder out I would appreciate it BTW: I am looking for the headlight assy for this '86 also as Mr. Butterfingers dropped it and broke the front glass out
  25. Hello All, Was doing a quick walk around on my 87 Venture, and my headlight isn't on. I pulled it apart and the bulb is good, both low and high. When I unplug the light the Warning light comes on on the dash. Then I plug in and it shows fine, but I still have no light. Any Ideas? D
