  1. Think some of us are big Harley bashers? You all ought to be watching tonight's South Park.
  2. you gotta love this one.
  3. The Story: I travel on business all over N. America but rarely get to stop and see where I am and whats going on in the places I stay. I recently had an afternoon available in San Jose CA and decided I'd rent a bike. I convinced a friend of mine to take the afternoon off and the plan was set. He rides a Harley Ultra Glide or something like that and apparently its not all that easy to rent anything but a Harley so thats what I did, I rented an 06 Electra-Glide. Renting: The rental place was fun. Too older folks, Harley lovers, riders for sure, own the place but they were actually from the next town over from where I live back home so that was cool. Thier mechanic who takes you through a "pre-rent" check list was a young "its Harley or nothing" kind of bad-butt who thought he eyed me up correctly as being out of my element as a rider and no way I could handle this "very heavy" bike. Despite my explanantion that I ride a Venture of similar size and weight he insisted on talking to me like I was a newb and this'll probably be my last day on earth.....but here's the key anyway! The Bike: The bike wasnt a bad ride while it was rolling but at a stop, you could lose a filling it was vibrating so much. The transmission sort of loudly "snaps" into every gear, the controls are so far out of place (at least for me), I didnt like the signals being separated on the handle bar and the radio controls were unusable while riding (but the sound quality was great). The way the luggage covers opened was also a pain and a poor design in my opinion. I definitely dont like the keyless gigantic knobby looking think that you turn to start it. The gauges were nice and well placed and the stock seat was just fine. Power? I couldn't find it. Its big heavy bike (as heavy as a Venture) and Im a big guy, but still it didnt compare in any gear at any RPM to my Venture. Overall it, despite all the bike observations, it wasn't as bad a ride as I expected. Id never spend the money to buy one ($23K base model) and was very happy to immediately jump on my Venture when I got back. I do have a slightly better respect for Harleys now The Ride: Our ride took us North from San Jose, East side of the Bay, on roads I cant remember but were beautiful. Saw San Quentin, Golden Gate Bridge, Pacific Coast Highway and places along the coast. Just amazing and I will do it all again ! The "wave": My die-hard Harley riding friend and I joked all day about the "waving" policy of bikers. I asked if it;s ok as a Harley rider to wave to a non-Harley cruiser rider. Flat out "no"! (but with a smile). Certainly not to Gold Wing riders and sport bikes and while I wasnt sure I swear he turns his head whenever he sees a BMW . I made the HUGE mistake of not only waving to every bike I passed but I waved to a Goldwing Trike! GASP. I though he'd abandon me right then and there! 4. Anyone looking for a set of Harley lights for the back of an RSV? There is a set on ebay for $50 and no bids.
  5. ....I have been very humbled today as one of the nicest gestures in my life happened to Lonna and myself. I know that some of you have been following whats been going on with us and our trek to Houston. We have been delaying our departure due to my good friend Ron Gaskill being killed in an auto accident almost 2 weeks ago. We have been helping his wife and daughter get things in order and largely getting his '79 Electra Glide running so I could sell it for her. I wont be selling his Harley to anyone....because Nancy and Amanda gave me Ron's bike. This big fat bastard doesn't cry very easily or is speechless very often, but I did both this evening as they came out of the blue with Nancy's brother (who helped me get the bike fired up) and presented me with the paperwork to put the title in my name. I am very overwhelmed and dont feel worthy of such a piece of their family. I also know that besides Ron, there isn't anyone on the planet that would love this bike and bring it back into shape. So now I have 2 bikes, 1 Yamaha and 1 Harley....looks like I will be staying busy fixing antiques
  6. For that very reason a guy got smart with me at a light in Bay City Mi. My wife on the back of my bike "04 Venture" and our friend on his Harley got in the wrong lane at a stop light. We needed to get over in another lane if we could. A small pick-up was setting next to us with his window down. My friend was next to the truck. I asked him if we could get over in front of him when the light changed. He just starred at me. Then he said," he can" but you can't. I just looked at him thinking he was kidding and would smile:) but oh no, not him. He started talking with my friend and said because you ride a Harley you can go ahead, but not him, meaning me. I was instantly angry and wanted to say something because this guy was serious and just kept giving me the eye. I looked ahead and told my friend we can go straight through the light and then make a turn and we did. Go figure:doh:. I was still angry at times to day but was reminded of a Proverb "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes" and "Leave the presence of a fool, Or you will not discern words of knowledge". I felt better after that reminder. All is good.
  7. I sold my '07 RSV to Randy, brother-in-law to Donaldj2242. They rode down to Maryland from Michigan on Saturday to pick it up. Don's father joined them on his Harley. I really enjoyed the bike but didn't have room to store two bikes over the winter. I am planning to sell my '03 Harley Ultra Classic in January and pick up a new Harley Ultra Limited. I threw in my Carbon One lift adapter which he strapped in for the ride home. Now we just need to get Randy to join VentureRider.
  8. Do we have someone close to Woodstock NY?I have a chance to buy a bike for a really low price its a 1998 model Fatboy I dont want it but figured someone here might be interested I had a soldier tell me about it today and is gonna try to get his brother to send him pics so I can see it. Let me know if you can someone here might get a great deal I dont want a Harley or need one for that matter so yall just keep your comments to yourself on Muffin and a Harley Jeff
  9. I am planning my 8 day September ride from Calgary to Las Vegas. I was playing with different map tools that are available on the web. I stumbled across the Harley Davidson Rider Planner tool. http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Ride_Planner/Ride_Planner.jsp?locale=en_US I have been using it to map out my trip and have found it to be very useful. You need to create a profile if you want to save your plans. They will even let you create a profile if you ride something other than a Harley.

  11. I rode with my buddy to the Harley shop the other day to get his idle speed adjusted. (08 Ultra Classic) His was running around 500 rpm and the oil light would come on at times. He was worried that it might be starving the top end on oil so it needed to be raised to around 950-1000. We pulled in at about 1100 with an appointment. They took the bike right back into the shop. We looked around for a while and then went to lunch. (2 250 pound guys on my Venture wasn't pretty!!) Making the long story shorter, about 1500(3pm) they come out and say it's ready. The guy said he was sorry for taking so long but that after every setting he had to turn the bike off and let it cool back down. After setting everything back to stock specs his bike went from getting 50mpg to about 40. He's not to happy with that. The idle is at 1000 though. I thought that was a lot of trouble for just getting the idle set. Yes I did show him how hard it was to adjust the idle on my Venture.
  12. One of the nations largest Harley Dealers died in a crash on his way to Sturgis. Here is the story. http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournalOnline/News/Headlines/frtHEAD01073109.htm Bruce Rossmeyer owned 13 Harley Dealships and of course, the one in Daytona. Yama Mama
  13. Just got my new Rider Magazine. Touring shootout this month between the Star Venture, Kawasaki Voyager, Victory Vision, and Harley Ultra. They picked the Voyager last, second to last the Vision, and tied for first place the Harley and the Venture. I guess the Venture isn't that long in the tooth. They did make fun of the tape deck.
  14. I have recently purchased the harley mufflers to complete the exhaust mod for my RSV. From the posts I have seen, the baffle drill out is to be done with a 1 1/8" hole saw. My question is, is this the correct size? The pipe coming from the center of the muffler is closer to 1 5/8"... I also notice looking down the pipe from the tail end, that one pipe has a "wavey" baffle that does not complete a solid plate, while the other muffler has an area that looks like 4 parts coming together. Can someone help clue me in here so that i perform this correctly.. I am also curious if there are any changes that will need to be made to the carbs...
  15. Was told today by a friend that used to work for Harley and his wife still does, that Harley will have a water cooled V4 in 2010. Don't really care as I have a Honda trike but thought I would put it out there.
  16. Guy at work just bought a new 2009 Harley Davidson Softail Custom. Was checking it out and it is an ok bike, seems kinda small and plain, but he really likes it so that is cool. Asked him if the dealer was hard to deal with on price and he told be that he got $1500 off of sticker, and I thought that was pretty good...until he told me he paid $19k OTD for it. I was in shock. $19k and it is bone stock, no shield, no bags nothing. Ouch. To each their own.
  17. New guy here, just picked up my 2009 RSTD S today. Traded in my 2003 HD Electra Glide Classic for it. Road 100 miles so far and here is what I learned. Shaft drive is not as smooth. Forgot that. But it is reliable. The RSTD does vibrate some when applying power up hills and accelerating. Feels like it is coming from the rear /shaft. RSTD gearing is a little lower in fifth. That was a surprise. The RSTD stock seat is horrible. 1 hour and we were sore. Thought about the Butler mod but ordered a Mustang seat instead. Liked the one I had on the Harley a lot. The RSTD engine is very car-like compared to the chug - chug Harley V-twin. Very smooth and lots of power (which I did not sample much as I am in the break in period). The pipes are really quiet - that's a change. The RSTD seems to have a little more rake in the front end and turns a little different, but very nice and balanced. The shifting is considerably smoother than the Harley. The RSTD display is cool. I like it and it functions well. I always thought the Harley Guages were a little boring. The RSTD suspension is better. Smoother and takes bumps better. The hard cases are much nicer on the RSTD. The lids don't come off! The RSTD windshield is way higher, which I like because I am tall. The RSTD is a much tighter machine all around. The Harley is something of a bucket of bolts, even when running well and in good repair. I look forward to sharing more as I get used to this bike. I have already learned a lot from this site. Hope I don;'t get the chirp!
  18. I have officialy joined the Darksiders. Put a nexum 165/80-15 on the rear and took a 200 mile ride this AM just to try it out. Loved it and so did the wife. Now to convince the son. He is having a fit about it. But he rides a Harley so that probably accounts for it . He is just jealous. Ride safe and may God Bless.

    venting

I am venting here, I just bought a 2004 venture, and one of the harley guys asked me when I was going to move up. I told him I was not ready for a Goldwing yet. Then he said, No I mean up to a harley, to which I replied, that going down, not up. I get tired of that attitude that I are ridding something less than they are because I don't ride a harley. It use to be a joke, but I have began to take it personally. just venting Gregg
  20. My RSTC has jardines on it and they sound good. BUT, I am wanting to go to the 4 into 2 style. I have read that some guys have used Harley pipes to do this. Or, are there kit out there for this application. I want a deeper sound than the Jardines, that is why I am researching this. Thanks.
  21. I had to go to the Dr. today, had to have an ingrown nail removed from my big toe, he had to do some slicing and dicing to get it all, so no work tomorrow, and no riding for a few days. What was really funny was the nurse saw my t shirt, motorcycle related, and said are you a biker, to which I replied yes, Do you ride a Harley, I answered that I didnt much care for them and got a hard look from the Dr. who was holding the scapel in his hand, turns out he rides a Harley springer, and a Kaw Vulcan, and we started talking bikes, tail of the dragon and things went smoothly after that, Thank God......That could have been ugly, making a Harley rider mad while he's slicing on my big toe with a sharp instrument....... But all is well, toe is fixed, just have to wait for it to heal, good news is I got a 3 day weekend out of it...........
  22. I bought 08 Ultra Classic take offs and need to know what to do to install on my 09 RSV. I understand that the Harleys have a catalytic converter installed in one pipe. I don't know if the RSV has converters. Do I need to take the converter out of the Harley pipe? If so doesn't that mean that I'll just be running straight pipes on the RSV. I'm trying to just get a low rumble out of the RSV. Nothing to drastic just a nice tone. I'm on a budget and don't want to buy expensive pipes. I'M SO CONFUSED:bawling:
  23. Last Saturday I traded the Venture in on an 09 Harley Ultra with ABS. Got a deal I could not pass up. For those of you that love to bash Harley and think ABS is not needed with proper skills I say go ride an 09 and try out the ABS I think you will be quite surprised at how well the bike handles and just how fast it can be stopped.
  24. This will devastate our local economy: Harley-Davidson Inc. could shrink or shut down its York County plant as the company tries to slash costs. "We have determined that we need to make some major changes in our York operations to position them competitively," spokesman Bob Klein said today. The 230-acre Springettsbury Township plant is widely viewed as an anchor of the local economy. Milwaukee-based Harley has more than 2,000 employees here, though layoffs are eroding the numbers. The problems at the plant include excess capacity and inefficiencies, Klein said. Harley plans to compare the cost of moving the operation with the cost of revamping it, he said. He declined to discuss long-term demand projections underlying Harley's review. Preliminary recommendations are expected by the fall. Harley in 2003 expanded the plant with a roughly $145 million factory for its Softail line of bikes. One scenario for keeping the plant open is to move production of Touring model bikes out of a separate building that dates back to the World War II era and into the new building, Klein said. A three-year contract the company hammered out with its union amid a 2007 strike will expire in February. Asked whether contract concessions might save the plant, union leader Dave Bunnell said: "That's always a possibility. We are just getting ready to elect our negotiating committee, and 'til we do that we won't be in talks at all." Bunnell is president of Local 175 of the International Association of Machinists (IAM) and Aerospace Workers. Klein only said labor costs would be a factor in the company's calculations. The IAM and another Harley union, the United Steelworkers, are involved in the company's review of a potential move, Klein said. Harley is assuming a new facility would be unionized, he said. Local union leaders also are working with management on the cost study. No similar reviews are occurring at other Harley plants, Klein said. Harley had about 2,500 hourly workers and 320 salaried workers in York County as of May 1, Klein said. Bunnell said his union counted about 2,140 members as of the latest layoff. And looking ahead, it seems likely the York County plant is at least going to shrink, Bunnell said. "Yeah, that's kind of the feedback we're getting," he said. Harley-Davidson shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol HOG.
  25. I am also a member of STAR chapter 304 Fayetteville, Ga. And all of our members own Yamaha's and several of us own two Yamaha's...until now. One of our members who owns a 06 Stratoliner went out and bought:mo money::mo money: an brand new 2009 Harley Ultra Classic. He hasn't completely lost his mind as he kept the Strat. Well, we all met today and got our first look at the new Ultra Classic and it's proud new owner (one wearing the helmit) and one of his buddies (one wearing the shades) and an oil spot (just happened to be there but not really from the Harley but we had him going). The Ultra Classic is really a beautiful bike and I really hope he likes it. Well here are the pictures, enjoy. Harry:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
