  1. OK, I turned the gas off to my house , to remove some gas appliances , and well Now my furnace wont come on, So ya ll will know it has a spark starter kind of like a grill. Tried the directions about turning off for 5 min, and all that stuff. Please help me!.....Fred
  2. For many of you this will not mean much, but for a few old hot rodders out there, it may. I have a 79 El Camino that was my dad's for many years before he died in August 2000. It had a 305 with a Quadrajet that ran ok but did not run very strong and seemed to use a lot of gas. My son needed an engine to go into his Chevy pickup, so he, my 16 year old grandson and I got the parts together to build my old 327 for the El Camino, so he could have the 305. We bored it .030 over, ordered a new cam that is the same as the old L-79 327/350 HP version. I had an Edlebrock Performer series aluminum intake and we put a 650 Holly double pumper on it. I also put full length tube headers on it. I even put the same aluminum Micky Thompson valve covers back on it that I put on 35 years ago, with a little polishing. After primeing the oiling system and getting some gas into the carburator, we cranked it up, open headers and all. It exploded to life, especially with it being inside a garage. Boy, does a cammed up small block Chevy with open headers sound good. This is the same basic engine I built and put in my 1964 Chevelle in 1972 when I was in the military. I rebuilt (basically re-ringed) it again in 1983 and put it in a 240Z Datsun. I put about 100,000 miles on the 327 in the 240Z. Now, all these years later it is back together and sounds real good. I can't wait to get the complete exhaust on it and be able to take it out and see how it runs. It may not get any better gas mileage, but I bet it runs a lot better. RandyA
  3. Help!! I have an 84 Standard. I was having problems with the gas gauge , It would read full and I"d drive 30 miles and I would have less than 1/2 tank. The mechanic I go to told me it was the sending unit in the tank. I pulled it out and used a new gasket to seal it up. Wrong leaked. Took it apart and tried again. Leaked. Stopped by the local shop, Yamaha #4. Leaks. Hand cut a cork material. Leaks! Any thoughts on what will seal this up???Joe
  4. I've been working on the bike the last couple of days and everything going well. I was putting the gas tank back on this morning and noticed a loose hose that smells like gas. I cannot find where it goes. On the other side it looks like there is a similar hose going to the lowers where the air filters are are located. It feels loose also, I did not pull it out. Can I just slide the hose back into the space or does it connect to something? Thanks:confused24: Everette
  5. Just recently bought a 87 Venture Royale with a voyager trike kit. It has about 30k miles. Depending on how I ride, I get between 20 and 25 miles per gallon. If i keep it 65 mph or below it gets close to 25. It runs & idles smooth; accelerates nicely; it just needs help on the gas mileage. I just bought some Sea Foam and am running that through it in hopes that will improve the mileage. My question - is there something else that can be done inexpensively that could improve mileage? I'm not ready to tear down the carbs or anything that extensive yet. Thanks for any/all advice
  6. I took the gas tank off today to change the plugs and noticed that there was oil caked onto the rubber stacks that run from the carbs up to the plastic boxes just under the gas tank. The oil is only on the stacks on the one side (left side) and not the other. Any ideas how to fix this?

    Stabil

To Stabil or not to Stabil. Up here in N. Mich. the RSV sets in hybernation for 5 months or so. I have always put stabil in the gas and filled the tank before putting to bed. The fella that we bought our RSV said he never used it because it was hard on rubber gas lines and plastic parts. I personally don't agree. What is your opinion?
  8. Ok this is my first post... I got a 83 XVZ12 for free this summer and it had sat for 5 years.... real nice shape and kept inside, changed the plugs and removed the carbs and cleaned them bled the brakes and clutch drained the gas and fired her up... it has run all summer with no engine problems other than running really warm this is my first bike and i love it BUT a few weeks ago i cut the windshield down and it was running fine other than the previous day it seemed like it was running out of gas (which it was really low) or the filter was pluged (was leaking :aftermarket clear filter) so i cleaned the filter and stopped the leak got gas and then took it out for a test run and it sputtered until the rpms got a little higher then she ran ok about 5 miles into the ride the bike lost power and started running lousy rode back and checked it all over (with an awesome harly mechanic) and found a cylinder went dead.. gas but no spark the spark to the LR cylinder is there when it starts but immediatly fades to nothing or comes in at higher rpms when riding is this the TCI or a coil going? i saw other posts mentioning the TCI what is that and where is that located? i gathered that controls the coils firing... i dont have a manual yet so any help would be really appreciated... the bike had gotten uncovered a couple of times when the wind blew off the cover during a heavy rain... would baking it in the oven help? any ideas?
  9. :080402gudl_prv:My new aux gas tank, it holds 3.5 gls. On the kick stand all I can get in it is 3 gls. I get 37.6 mpg. around town. Hwy I get 40 mpg. I got 113.5 miles with 3 more gls. That is a total of 260 miles per fillup. I use the 3 gl. first then swith over to the main tank. The main tank is turned off till I need it. this is done with out stopping. When the 3gls, is running out I flap the main tank on. 260 miles around town or 280 on hwy on 7gls, of gas. I still have my reserve gas of one gls. in the main tank for 37. 6 miles or hwy at 40 miles. I now can go 320 miles befour I run out. The aux tank can be tanken off or on in less then 5 mins. I do like stoping a lot but not for gas. I know youall like picture so here is some.:cool10:
  10. My girlfriend dropped a whole can of Seafoam into her 750 Ace (3.7 gallon tank) which probably only had 1 gallon of gas in it (just guestimating as she knows it was not full and could still see some gas). Anyway, she started it up, it ran for a while, then stopped. She couldn't get it started again. Am going to go over tomorrow and maybe drain her tank into a gas can then fill up the tank and start over again.... Question is, if there is so little gas that is diluting the whole can of Seafoam, could she have done any damage? Do I just need to fill up the tank, shake it up a bit and try to crank it up again? Thanks, Jeff
  11. While searching for causes for mileage being down from ~ 45-46 to 40-42 I noticed gas weakly spraying from the bottom port of #3 Vacuum piston at idle, the diaphragm has no visible tears and the float level is correct, the only ports that appear to go to the cover side of the diaphragm seem to be the purge jets. Any ideas what's happening here? Carbs are synched and compression is within 5# on all cyl. Thanks
  12. On my way home from Pittsburgh today, I happened to pass by a Victory dealer in Medina, OH. Since I have never seen the new Vision in person, I stopped in to take a look. Well...they didn't have one so that was a waste. What they did have though was 3 of the new Piaggio MP-3 scooters. I don't know that I would ever want one but they sure look cool and I would like to ride one. OH...and this crazy thing has a 15 gallon gas tank. http://www.piaggiousa.com/
  13. Well, if you read this thread you know about the problems I was having with my 2nd Gen. Well I finally took it to the dealer, because I had some warranty work to be done on it anyway. I finally got them (after a call to Yamaha myself) to replace my warped brake rotor under warranty, and they replaced my fuel petcock. When taking the bike in, I kinda figured they'd assume all of my engine troubles could be traced back to the faulty petcock, and they did. They replaced it, changed out the plugs for me, cleaned and re-synced the carbs (they did say they were off a tad), and replaced a couple hoses that had crud in them from the petcock going bad. I got the bike back last Monday (a week ago) and it seemed to run much better. However, after riding it off and on all week, my problems are back. The engine seems to simply load up, like it's still getting too much gas. In fact, at times you can smell unburnt gas. I did find out that if I'm going down the road and it loads up on me and runs like garbage, if I shut the fuel off at the petcock (which now works properly) and let the thing almost die before turning the gas back on, the problems clear right up and it runs fine again. So it definitely seems like too much gas is the problem. Now what's causing the problems is another mystery. So, I'm going to call the service manager back today and talk to him about it, though I'm pretty sure what he's going to tell me... that my carbs need re-jetted. He told me when I picked it up that they did some kind of test with the exhaust and said it was running slightly rich, but not enough to effect the running of the engine. To be honest, I doubt they ever even took it for a ride further than around the parking lot. So now, if I take it in and they re-jet it, I'm sure that's out of my pocket, and still no guarantee it's going to fix my problem. Could that lead to smelling un-burnt gas? Maybe there is an issue with my choke, though looking over the exterior mechanisms of it, it appears to be in working order. So I don't know... Any thoughts?
  14. On Sunday, Oct 21st, Lone Eagle and myself (Condor) are taking a ride to Woodland Ca. for BBQ RIBS at Ludy's, then on to Reiff's Gas Station to take a look at an awesome antique collection of 1930's, 40's and 50's Gas Station memoribilia. If we have the time we'll also take in the AG History Center. Anyone in the San Francisco/Sacramento/Nor-Cal area that would like to join us is more than welcome. We'll meet for lunch at noon. It's going to be a great time. And bring your cameras. http://www.reiffsgasstation.com/images/web-tex1_rd75.png This is the perfect location for your next Car Club gathering! Book the patio for your next luncheon or just stop in for a tour. http://www.reiffsgasstation.com/images/web-usethismap_.jpg
  15. It is becoming apparent that some here love to talk about gas prices and that others would like this forum to remain a friendly place with out political discourse. Since gas prices and politics go together like well gasoline and fire those threads tend to get explosive and then deleted. Well here is the perfect place for your gas talk. http://www.gasbuddy.com Cheers (A moderator should lock this thread before it explodes.)
  16. I recently heard from one of our California members that he had been having some performance problems with his first gen Venture. He said that he finally got it resolved by a very good mechanic and some carb work. Turns out that it was caused by the gas that was being sold in his part of the country and I think that it is a very valid point. I asked him to let me know what was done and here is the answer to my question. I find it very interesting and it makes a lot of sense to me. I think it could also apply to the second gen Venture. Here is the response: Hi Don, good evening. I'll be as brief as I can, although Mary tells me it just isn't in my genetic make-up! My bike had just had a total engine rebuild, so should have run well, but not so. I kept fiddling with it, and it sort of ran okay, and was a rocket on the freeway. I went to this engine guy, Larry Holt, who has done two V-8's for me...I know how, but I'm 62 now, and someone else can do it for me. I told him I thought I had ignition trouble, and he said no way, not if I can do 80 on the hiway. And if Mary and I wanted to just putt around looking at the sights, the bike would run on it's own at 3000 rpm. I couldn't shut it off with the throttle return twist. Larry's solution was that there was a lean running fault because of the rotten gas we get here, and I'd messed up the carb sync trying to get it to idle as well as it did. We reamed the pilot (idle) jets in all four carbs from 16 thou to 18 thou, and reset the sync. An absolute miracle. Runs like a dream, with a ton of throttle response. The bottom line seems to be: the carbs were designed and built before the garbage gas here in California, and with all the added alcohol, they now run lean. Just for laughs, I put in some 110 octane aviation gas, and oh my! What a ride! Hope this helps someone, somewhere.....Best regards, Mike
  17. I posted this last night but accidentally posted it in the read only tech library, sorry about that. I mentioned a while back that my gas mileage has gone way south. This started over a year ago, long before installing the VMAX rear end. I recently changed the plugs, removed the K&N filters and tried stock again and neither of those things have helped. Today I will remove the Dyna 3000 and re-install the stock ignition module. Now the Dyna did not originally cause the problem but I'm just trying to rule out that something might have gone bad with it. Bike runs good, idles smooth, has great power. This is really baffling me. There is no fuel overflowing that would indicate a stuck or high float. So...I'm still looking.
  18. Well this has been going on for a month or so. My onboard computer that shows the checklist when you start the bike up goes on and off on me when am I am riding which causes the bike not to show the temp guage,if it's charging, how much gas,no blinkers,no brake lights, and no dash lights. It has never done this before and the only thing we did is Dana resodered the indicator module for the cold broken soder spots. Deacon Dan has the same 86 venture as mine and his has the same problem his checklist comes up but not all the time his also goes on and off. To add more his fuse box is real hot to the touch. I got the spare module from Dana and put it on mine and it never cut off but it gave a false reading on the gas amount and the gas picture would stay up. I just think it's wierd that the 2 bikes have the same problem. Oh yeah then I put the one that we got from Dana that I had put in my bike to test and it had the same problem it had in mine false gas reading and gas light staying on. Also the computer would come on and go through the check list but would come off and on when it felt like it. So does anyone know or have an idea whats going on with 2 bikes having the same issues to the panel cutting on and off for no apparent reason? Myself,Dana and Deacon Dan are lost we think it might be the control module not sure whats it is called but does the checkup on the items when you turn the bike on. I was thinking that might be it but why does both cut off and on for no reason. Any ideas or if you selling a comp module well 2 of them let me know. Meatloaf:sick:
  19. Just as I was leaving work tonight we had a very massive and major storm roll in to town. Of course when the first rain drops hit to road all the stupid cagers hit the breaks and stopped traffic on the highway. If they had just drove normally I would have stayed in front of the storm. I got hit with massive amounts of rain and then the hail. I caught a weather warning on the radio about 2 inch hail and a tornado warning and a few spotted funnel clouds. Rain I can handle, small hail is fine since I have my riding gear and helmet, but 2" hail and tornado's!! I pulled off the highway and under a gas station canopy. I had left downtown along side a guy on a scooter and was talking to him as we were stuck in traffic. We both stopped at that gas station. The guys at the gas station were nice enough to open the garage doors to the service bays and let us pull in there for protection. (BTW, he rides a Maxi Scooter and he is like Don in that he has started a website and forums for these scooters. (http://www.scootermaxi.com ) We had horizontal rain and very strong winds. I got to talking with this guy and it turns out he lives a few blocks from me and works a few blocks from where I work. Go figure. Anyways the larger hail never made it to where we were and the rain let up after about an hour. We drove the rest of the way in light rain and soaked to the skin. Now I am finally dry and warming up. My wallet's contents are strewn all over my desk drying and my gear is drying in the basement.

  21. OK, I suffered through a tank of gas without using 5th gear in the name of science. NO reason to ever do it again. Many of us know that the overall gear ratio in 4th gear on an RSV is identical to the overall gear ratio in 5th on a 1st gen. Also, many 1st gen owners continue to insist that their bikes routinely get better gas mileage than the 2nd gen. So out of curiosity, I just burned a full tank in my 05 RSV without hardly using 5th gear at all. Saturday I did a PGR mission up in Oklahoma a bit over 100 miles from here. I filled up just before heading home and kept it in 4th the whole way, averaging 75 - 80 MPH. Then I added one 40 mile round trip to work before I filled up. Result? I got a measly 32 MPG on that tank of gas, where I usually get 36 under the same conditions. Conclusion? The difference, if there really is one, has to be due to the overall weight of the bike and the wind resistance. It is also very evident that the overdrive gear on the RSV does give you better gas mileage when hitting the super-slab. Goose
  22. Alright, I need some help. I'm guessing I have a fouled plug or two, but I want to see if that's the general consensus. Whenever I'm forced to ride for a while in first and second gear, say while checking out a campground as I did with my father earlier in the week, or caught in stop and go traffic for a while, my bike decides it doesn't want to run right anymore. When given gas, the thing coughs and sputters and pops, and just generally acts like it doesn't have any get-up-and-go. It still runs, I haven't had it die, but until you get into third or fourth gear, it just acts like it's a struggle to get up speed unless I really hammer it. I checked my air filters, and they both look like new, and I've been fighting the issue off and on all summer, so I throw out the thought of bad gas. I've also run a full can of Sea Foam through it to see if maybe I had some buildup somewhere, but it seemed to have little effect. I'm guessing this all works into my mpg, which at 34 on a good day seems low to me, not to mention my 28-30 normally. Am I right in thinking this sounds like a spark plug issue? I've had a couple other guys (my dad included) throw that out there, though they're about as mechanically inclined as I am. So, if the plugs are a good place to start, does anyone have (or have a link to a good walkthrough) of how to check the plugs? I'm guessing the rear two are no big deal, but unless I'm missing some serious tool it appears I have to take off my tank to get to the front ones. So far the owner's and service manuals haven't proven much help. Thanks in advance for any help & advice.
  23. Well folks, after riding in the mountains and even general highway speeds on the RSV, I am more than convinced that 5th gear is just too high on these bikes. I actually did an experiment on the way to Colorado. Bob Dakin was riding two up and pulling a trailer also. For a complete tank of gas, I kept my bike in 4th gear as opposed to him running in 5th. At the next fill up, I needed the exact same amount of gas that he did. I am convinced that the overdrive is just too high a gear and are getting us out of the optimum power band. So, this morning I ordered a VMAX rear for my '99 RSV. I ordered it from John Furbur at http://www.rmsportmax.com After I get it, I will do a pictorial on the install, just a direct swap, and will report how it works out. The units that John sells are ready to go, complete with the holes and etc. for your speedo sensors. I am excited about the change and have no doubt that it will be a great thing.
  24. Hello fellow riders, hope everyone doing fine. Just wondering if anyone could help me out. This is the problem took bike to work one day and I had to stay overnite, during that evening there was a heavy rain storm. So the next morning got bike started and drove off. then the problem started. First I noticed that the tach does not register until I really goose the gas, it seemed when I slowed down the bike would run rough and almost stall. Ran fine when it reached 55mph or better. If anyone could guide me so I can get riding again thank.
  25. My buddy has an "06" Venture as do I. We took a 350 mile trip together today and he got noticable better gas mileage that I. One tank we had 139 miles and I put in 9/10 of a gallon more that he did. He was telling me about how he modified his air box making the air intake hole larger. Also he took off the cones in the back of both tail pipes and drilled four holes in the baffell on each side. Will both these things increase your gas mileage and why?? Are there any posts here regarding both of these modifications. He was saying less back pressure from the modification on the pipes increases gas mileage and the carbs beathing easier from more air helps. Both kind of make sence to me, but I bow to the infinate knowledge of those here that live and breath this stuff. Thanks in advace for the responce.
