  1. I bought a leather gas cap cover from Yamaha that in there catalog. it came in Fri. when I went to put it on it so small it took the owner to put it on and took him 5 min. he said it would stretch with time. I tried to take it off and put on myself today came off a no go putting back on. Does anyone out there have one of these and are they that hard to put on? :7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]:
  2. All- I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas. I have an 87 Venture and had the Carbs rebuilt. After replacing the fuel filter and checking the gas, we placed the rebuilt carbs in. It started up pretty well, but right away we noticed gas coming through Carb #2 (front left side as your sitting on the bike) and also coming out the top of the carbs in two small orifices. What might be causing this, float perhaps? Also, the four metal air vents at the top of the carbs, do they attach to a hose or something? When I took the carbs off there was nothing attached and there doesn't appear to be anything out of place to re-attach. Appreciate your help. Bill
  3. Left the house for work yesterday, had to turn around a mile later. Back on the road behind a semi on a 2 land hwy goin 60 mph. A white Grand Prix (mid 90s) going the other way came within inches of going under the semi and then a few feet from me. Two miles later, some woman decided she needed gas. Made a left in front of me. Hit the brakes and the Stebel at the same time. I stop at the next gas station and about get into an argument with the attendant (full serve station; not my bike!). Pull out of station and spin the rear tire on a wee bit of sand/gravel. Bike laying in (on the guards) on the middle of the road. Pop the bike up and head to work. Nine hours later, time to come home. Beautiful day all day long. Not a cloud in the sky. Until 1:45 am when I am riding home. At least I am still alive and the bike was unhurt.
  4. I've never been real picky about the grade of gas I used in my bike, but since I got it out of the garage this spring, I've only been putting premium in it. I don't have the original factory manual that came with the bike, so I'm not sure, but I think 93 octane may be required. When I was using cheaper grades of gas my bike seemed like it started "hard" and you had to let it warm up for about 20 minutes before you could ride it. But since I've been using the expensive stuff it starts nice and smooth and is ready to go at the start. Not to mention it seems like it runs better in the high rpms range and seems like it has more get up and go. So is 93 octane required, or is it just good for my bike?
  5. when did you, start keeping up with gas mileage for me 1960 volvo p544 gas was $.22 reg ,little car got 24 mpg best mpg was 1953 studebaker champ v8 od 35 mpg boy we have come a long way in 50 yrs lowell
  6. There is an estate auction at our next door neighbors Sunday with an 89 Virago 1100 on it. It's got a bad back tire, the auctioneer doesn't know if it will start and it's got the derndest thing on the gas tank. It's a relief of a precious moments figure on it (I know, I know.....don't mean to speak ill of the dead, but he was an odd ball to say the least) but.....I'm hoping I can get it for about $200.00. I'll put a new tire on it, get that #%*# thing off the gas tank, have it repainted for $200.00. Hopefully the battery will just need charging. When I get done with it, I hope to have a match to mine. Wish I had a pix to show you how ugly mine was before I had it repainted. This bike is quite a bit older than mine, but the style is pretty much the same. If I get this thing....I'm going to have to post a pix of what that gas tank looks like. Anyway...this is how I'm hoping to have it look when I get done. Wish me luck!!
  7. I love riding my gen1 but I kept getting the itch to sport about town with a little more humph then Blu has. A lady in Memphis offered to sell me an old Yamaha that was taking up room in her garage. I have a couple of Seca 750 yammies and thought this one might at least be good for parts at $500 bucks. I took the trailer over to get it. In the garage, I found a 2001 VMAX with 4500 miles on the clock. I told her it was worth more but she said to get it away from her so I paid her and left. I knew it had not been run for several years and expected the worst. I went to drain the gas but found none. I checked the carbs and cleaned something oily from them but they were clean. I drained the fluids and changed them, put in the gas, put on a new battery and it fired right up. It had cobra slip ons and sounded like the hotrod it is. I noticed a large amount of oil leaking around the third gear and the cover on the thirdgear is bent. I bought the whole assembly and look forward to dropping the swingarm and changing it out. The bike is perfect, paint and all except for one corner of the middle seat which a rat or dog or something got. I think I have it all now! Two bikes for two kinds of riding!
  8. Today I started fixing the one last thing that dose not work right on my 1985 VR, The gas light/guage & warning light always says that there is no gas. I took apart my front screen and everything to get at the back of the main console to clean the plugs and conections. now that everything is pluged back together the start up check list dose not come on and it will dimly flash upon key turn. Thanks,
  9. Finally finished getting everything together after doing a variety of maintenance jobs on Red. Backed it out of the Mancave and it wouldn't go forward. Felt like I had an emergency brake on. Knew this wasn't right, so I had my boys push me back into the cave and did a little troubleshooting. Quickly realized that the drive shaft was not properly engaged with the U-Joint. It was laying next to the U-joint rather than in it. Quickly took all the rear end stuff off so I could unmount and remount the pumpkin. This time I got it in there properly. Put it back together, pushed it out of the cave, threw on the helmet (new Aria - maiden voyage for that too), and took off. First stop was the neighborhood gas station to fill up with fresh gas. Next was to hit the highway and let Red stretch its legs. And stretch it did. WOW! She now has more performance than I have ever felt. One of the carb boots was not seated properly when I took it apart. I assume it had been like that since I bought it with 9000 mile on her. There are now 75000 miles. It felt different decelerating also. No popping, banging, or smell of gas. Looking forward to seeing how my gas mileage has changed. It really was wonderful getting some wind in my face - if only for about 15 miles. RR
  10. Brother-in-Law getting close. Going to look at a 02 V-Star 1100 this afternoon. He has already checked it out wants my approval?? Says there is a low speed knock in it. Goes away as soon as you give any gas?? Anything to look for here? Where you at Lew???
  11. I am a little confused now after my 400 plus mile trip to the NC mtns Monday and Tuesday. :confused07: I checked gas mileage at every stop and it clocked it at 43-45 each time. I have read on here that this mileage is OK. The confusing part is, I feel it is running rough as all get out. I have plans to find someone to assist with a carb sync. Reasons: 1) A little sluggish since I installed baffles and repacked the Bag Slash pipes. 2) Lots of popping with deceleration. Now I am not sure it is a sync problem. Popping is annoying. Any comments.
  12. I have been reading about changing to a VMAX gear, just wondering is it worth it? Would like to have a little more acceleration but do not want to loose to much gas milage, is this possible?
  13. Its an 86 that has been sitting for a little over 2 years, I drained the gas, changed the oil, installed new battery, filled with fresh gas and she fired right up. What other maintenance should I do before I take her out?
  14. Happened for the first time today. Went out for a ride with almost a full tank of gas, look down and the warning light is on and it's showing empty. I eased it for another few miles to the next station with my butt sucking a hickey on the seat because I didn't know if the gage went out or if I had a leak and was actually out of gas. Filled up and it only held about 1 1/2 gallons, rode about another 150 miles and the gage would go from showing completely full to bone dry empty and back again. Filled up a few miles from home and I had only ran out another 1/2 tank or so. Where do I start to fix this blasted thing???
  15. It all started when Charlie bought the bike in January. The bike was in northern Quebec. He spent the next 2 months trying to figure out how to bring it back. Calls to MTO resulted in various mixed messages about what you could and couldn’t do – i.e. some said he needed to have the mechanical done before it could be driven. Couldn’t put the existing plate on the bike as MTO entered it in the computer as unplated when they changed the ownership. This would have meant trailering it 900 kms. The bike was too big for a normal large pickup truck, as it’s 9 feet long. As well it came with a trailer which is 6 feet long…The other part of the issue was where to pay the G.S.T. If paid in Quebec it could be driven, but then you’d also have to pay it in Ontario and wait for a rebate from Quebec. As if…so he paid the tax in Ontario. MTO still insisted it couldn’t be driven until a mechanical fitness was provided. What to do…what to do… The dithering went back and forth between MTO, friends, OPP officers, everyone with a different take on the situation. Finally a friend on the VentureRider site contacted someone in Quebec who advised that all he needed to do was get a 4 day travel permit in Quebec and then it could be driven home. In the meantime a friend offered to borrow a trailer and chocks from someone else and go pick it up. Remember, it was still March and could still snow here. However, the trailer was gigantic, 22 feet long, and would have cost $800- $1,000 in gas just to get there. Then found out the trailer lights were no good, and electric brakes would not work. Forget that idea. Another friend said perhaps the best option would be to build a raft and float it down the Ottawa River through the Trent Canal and home…LOL! Anyway in the end Charlie and a friend drove to St. Donat, Quebec. 954 kms. one way. En route they got the 4 day travel permit and got to the bike’s house. Then the problems began. The spot was way up in the Laurentian Mountains – still some snow there, lakes still frozen, air was cold on the bike. Dressed for winter. 1. The battery was dead so the owner boosted it and away they went. 2. The bike needed gas. As soon as it was stopped at the gas station, it wouldn’t start. So Charlie and a guy push started it. 3. Now it was obvious, he couldn’t shut the bike off. So drove back to Ottawa (3 hrs.) Stopped at a bike shop which was open late, and tried to buy a battery. However, it would take 10 hours to charge it. He didn’t buy the battery. 4. Got lost trying to find the place to stay. Drove far out of the way in long-weekend traffic in the dark, but finally found it at 9 p.m. Had been driving since 5 a.m. in Sudbury. 5. Stayed overnight at a B & B. The next day was Good Friday and everything was closed. 6. Asked the B & B owner if he had a battery charger. Yes. Tried to remove seat to take the battery out to charge. The bolts had been replaced and one wouldn’t come off. Didn’t have the right tools. Tear hair out. 7. Also, bike needed more gas. 8. Friday morning, friend drove to 2 gas stations to buy a plastic gas can. It must have been gold plated. $$$ Filled up tank. 9. Worked on the damn bolt some more. Finally a neighbour came over who had more tools. Got the damn bolt off. 10. Tried to boost it with the truck with small booster cables (all he had). Not enough juice to start bike. 11. Same neighbour brought over better cables. The boost worked. 12. On the road now, but can’t shut the bike off. 13. When gas was needed, stopped and filled up the gold plated gas can. Then left gas station and stopped down the road. Filled up the tank with the bike RUNNING!*#*$&!!! 14. Repeated this operation several times. 15. On the way home, temperature in one spot was up to 33 degrees C (80+_) Stripped off clothes. An hour later, temperature was dropping. Put clothes back on. 16. Believe it or not got home all in one piece. Drove into driveway at 5:30 p.m. Good Friday. 17. Shut off the bike. A few minutes later, tried key and it started! However, the battery really was toasted and a replacement has been bought. Was it worth it? Definitely! Cost of having new bike? Priceless!
  16. today i went out to give the venture a ride after doing brakes rotors and tires. i put on about 55 miles and things where starting to come out of it what i mean is the bike was running good. idle around 1000 rpms at the stop lights. can hit 80 mph and thats in fourth. well i was just enjoying the day when about 5 bikes came up and went around me they stoped in a nearby town about 5 miles down the road i went past. about 2 miles down the road the bike started to act up. cut in cut out? i looked at the gas gauge still showed 2 lines? then poof it quit. i pulled off to the side of the road going now what? my bike is stuck on reserve i think as i cant turn the petcock. not broke just stuck afraid to use pliers. well while im looking like a lost child. these bikers came up and said whats wrong. i said not sure it just died. like it ran out of gas. well they rocked the bike and said sure sounds like ya got none. so off one of them went came back with 2 galons of gas put it in the bike slow cranking for some reason new gel battery. but after about 4 cranks she fired up. i said what i owe ya. he shook my hand said nothing. and vroooomm they where gone. now gas cost about 3 bucks here thats 6 bucks. i will never forget. daman thats his plate .. so all in all its been a nice day.
  17. After 4 months of the bike being jacked up on the Carbon-one jack stand. I was able to take it out for a ride. I was starting to worry about ever getting it back together again. I feel more confident "getting into" the bike now. I haven't touched the engine except for plugs. But it looks like I'll have tobe checking the valves sometime in the future and maybe installing the stronger clutch but hoping that will be next winters project. Although I keep the battery charged. It was dead. A new battery I bought last July appears to have an internal short. Put the old (original) one back in and it fired right up. I was impressed, setting 4 months, pulled out the choke, hit the button and started immediately. I almost forgot what a pleasure it is to ride it. Ran great, didn't skip a beat. Next thing I knew I was putting in another tank of gas to swing it around and head the 160 miles back home. Dang! I love riding this bike! I'd like to thank you great folks on this forum for all the past posts and the tech section that helped me do the maintenance and the fixes you have shared. I could not have done it without your unknowing help & guidance.
  18. I have posted about this problem but I'd like your opinion. I have a gas leak. It appears to originate on the right rear carb area. The gas runs down the rear cylinder wall onto the crankcase breather. It leaks less than a teaspoon. A full tank of gas makes the leak worse and the leak disappears when the gas tank is at about 20%. Recently I changed the plugs, all were very good except for the right front cylinder which was gas fouled. Don't know if that's related to the leak. I took it in earlier to a mechanic for this issue and got it back with new jets, one was definitely corroded green, so it wasn't a complete waste. I took it to the same mechanic who says it is the needle valve/pin stuck. I looked around and found one reference to the needle valve sensitivity to alcohol and having the valve switched to stainless. Do you think he's right? I don't have much confidence in this guy because he didn't fix it the first time. The nearest certified Yamaha mechanic is 70 miles away. I should just bite the bullet and take it apart my self, but having never done it before I am not 100% confident.
  19. Hi, Finally got the 84 VR all put back together after a long winter tear down..Replaced collector, new swing arm bushings, starter rebuild and misc other stuff...Started her up today for the first time... runs great.....BUT Gas gauge shows empty and of course the darn little red light is flashing , but the tank was half full... rode to the gas station, filled it up and still shows empty. This happened once last year for about 10 minutes then good all summer.. What to check first??? fuel sender, float...gauge itself??? Any advice on where to begin would be appreciated...Can certainly ride it, but do not like the little red light and I'd rather know the gas level Thanks, Clay
  20. You guys using regular or premium? I always get a gas smell in my garage after coming back from a ride, what's up with that?
  21. So I checked out Pinwall/eBay to no avail. I'm trying to find a replacement fuel sending unit for my 1997 RS. I don't have a gauge, just a dummy light...and when it comes to gas... I'm a dummy. (Just ask my wife how many times I've run out of gas less than 1/2 mile from the house.) I can't find the stupid sending unit without paying $70 for it... (add cheap to being a gas dummy) Anyone know where I can find one?
  22. Bike is leaking gas and it drains down onto the crankcase breather onto the left side clutch cover to the ground. I checked the plugs and the right front was gas fouled. Changed all the plugs and it seems like a new bike, quit backfiring also. I checked gas tank... no rust visible. Did the seafoam 25% of can in 3 different tanks of gas still have 25% left...man that is expensive stuff. Drained carbs and it was impossible to see what came out. These measures didn't stop the leak. I haven't taken the tank clear off and tapped the floats yet. Took it to a shop months ago and $300 later I have new jets and a replaced fuse for my light bar, I explained the problems and I asked to have the floats checked but I got new jets and a fuse. One jet was corrosion green so I don't feel completely bad, but I left the shop with the same problem, the undiscovered bad plug, and the backfiring also. This was the good metric shop in St Joseph, the others are even worse. This is a metropolitan area of 85,000, you would think there would be one good shop here, but noooooo. If I owned a Harley I would have 3 good service options, metric ...3 very bad service options. I still suspect the float was not set correctly or was stuck when I purchased the bike, a 2004 Midnight. It was a repossession and probably sat for many months. Any suggestions, I dread the thought of trying to take the carburetor apart to set the floats, never have done that before. Changing the the buried plugs took me 3 hours so a carburetor would be 2 day job for me, and my not so flexible back. Any other suggestions?
  23. Went to take the tank off this evening; one front side Allen head bolt removed with ease; the other one stripped like butter. Now what? Can't grip the head with vice grips; tried three different styles/size with no success. Cutting off the head would do no good because the bolt sticks out about 1/2 inch into the gas tank mount. The gas tank mount doesn't seem to have much give to pry it from the bolt if all that was removed was the head. Any ideas?
  24. well today it got up to 48 out side so i thought i would go give the old venture a try. i got it out of the garage. fired her up she idels rough as i knew she would. i put sea foam in it back in october a whole can to a full tank of gas but due to knee problem i never ran the heck out of it. well i was going to take it to a friends garage today for work on brakes , put on rotors , brake pads and tires. so i tokk it out for a 25 mile ride darn thing just couldnt get past 60 mph?? i got into town and pulled up to the stop sign. while letting off the gas. it backfired like a 410 shot gun. i swear i saw the lady in the cross walk duck. well after the back fire she seemed to smooth out some?? so i took her back out on highway and hit 70 mph?? then she started to bog down? well i got her home and went duh ! james you didnt put the new plugs in did ya? nope i forgot. chalk it up to want to ride syndrom. its now back in the bro inlaws garage as my friends apendix ruputred and hes now in the hospital. so no work done on it. me think its time for old goat to learn on this bike. so im going to check the oil make sure no gas in it. then do the plugs. and give her another try. i have to be carefull as brakes are not verry good on the bike. but i want to get her running fair to good. then up to freebirds maintenance day. to work out the bugs?? any thing else i should check out??
