  1. Ok, so put a new Dunlop D404 on the rear (16,900+ miles on the first one). While at it, I had the Yamaha dealer install the Diamond R level links. Once I got it home, added 3.9 Lbs of air to the front forks, and 32.4 lbs to the rear. Amazing difference in handling at all speeds, last year at 10,800 miles I had already put on the 130 front tire. This bike rocks now. Great handling at all speeds. Notices a huge difference in parking lots and is not following grooves in the road at all. No squirreliness (is that a word?) at all! However it is steep angle on the kickstand and a monstrous lift off when the bike is parked. Not that I am willing to change it back - no sirree! But must admit is a bit of a heft up off the stand? Any one ever done a kick stand mod? Added a pad to to bottom of the kickstand. I mean the cheapo is to carry a hockey puck on a string, but was thinking of something more (dare I say) elegant? Thoughts? Stu
  2. I have a friend who has a 1984 Venture Royale. He has developed an oil leak at the bottom of his front forks. He says there is a seal there where the axle goes through the forks. He has had it into the dealership several times for repair. Each time, after a few days, the seals start leaking again. Does anyone have any idea why these seals would leak so easily? Is there something that the dealership may be overlooking in replacing these o-ring seals? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
  3. Well i got the paint almost finished up and it was lookin fair. Got down to clear coeting (second coat) the last part and i knocked off my front fender into the grass, (no paint booth) turned around to see what happened and knocked off the headlight ring and the false tank cover..............I'll stop right there. the rest of the story is'nt good for mixed company. I'll have to fix the clear coat later, now i have a new problem...... Got all the parts back on and it looks better even though it is ****** up. So i started checkin to see why it wasnt idling right and i found that the #2 cylinder carb boot is busted. now i gotta have one. Anybody have a spare? It is the left front cylinder. looks like oil has dripped out of the filter housing and onto the rubber boot. i'm pretty sure this is what caused it th bust open.,, !!!
  4. looking at this and its listed for 86-91 ventures but how different is the 86 front fender from the 84? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/86-91-YAMAHA-VENTURE-ROYALE-CHROME-FENDER-EMBLEM_W0QQitemZ230157714885QQihZ013QQcategoryZ10066QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  5. I have a slight problem, the front fork of my husband's Royal Star Venture is to soft. He wants to take off the oil from it,and put new oil in. My question, where do u let the oil pour out,and where does he put the new one in. In one word, complete oil change on the front fork of his motor. Also, what type of oil does it take? Hope i can hear something soon. Thanks already Greetz Kiki
  6. Looking for some help with a strange noise I heard this afternoon on the way home from work. It sounded like metal grinding or a bearing spinning. At the same time I heard the noise the bike pulled to the left and slowed down. I did not hear the noise with just the bike running so I think it is coming from the wheels or drive train not the engine. Does anyone know what a failed front wheel bearing might sound like? Any thoughs? I checked the front wheel for side to side play and there was none. I put the bike on the center stand and ran the back wheel up to speed but I could not duplicate the problem. Any and all thoughts would be appreaciated.
  7. With the CLASS (air suspension) system on my 88 VR, I have been having some problems. They are: - Sometimes no power going to it and nothing happens. (Yes the Red/Blue wire haw power with the key in the ACC position) - Sometimes I get an E4 code - When it does finally work, I can pressurize the front and rear with the key switch in ACC. However when I turn the key from ACC to ON (or to OFF), I can hear air pressure released behind the seat when the key is put back in the ACC position. When I check the pressures, the rear pressure is where I set it but the front pressure reads zero (and from the ride, it is really at zero) What seems to make it go between these three modes is when I disconnect/reconnect the connector on the backside of at the control panel (right side of fairing) or wiggle the same connector a bit. Also, I just change the front fork seals and dust covers and didn't even touch the electronics or the mechnicals (pump, drier, valves, solenoids) for the CLASS system. Before I start taking things apart, does anyone have any quick and dirty ideas? I'm thinking there is a loose connector on the board and I may have a solenoid in the back that is sticking -- but I'm really new to the Venture and I'm just guessing at this point.
  8. What is the determining factor for the amount you can lower the front end. I have read 1 inch and I have read 1.5 inch. I just lowered my bike 1" and all seems well, but I'm still just a little off from being able to stand flat footed. Thanks Everette
  9. I am looking to replace front and rear tires on my 84 Standard. Currently running Dunlop D404's. I think they handle fine, but I am wondering if anyone else has anything great to say about another brand. Looking for mileage and decent price. American motorcycle tire will deliver a front and rear D404 to my house for $134.
  10. Thinking about putting a Progressive rear shock on the ride. I already have changed the front springs to Progressive, what a difference!!!! How hard is removing the rear shock?? The front end was cake, is the back as easy??:confused24:
  11. well folks, it has happened to me TWICE, in the past couple of weeks. afternoon sun at my back, in town driving, preparing to make a left turn. i look down the street a couple of blocks, i see a white,"dodge ram dually", coming in the inside lane. headlights are on, chrome bumper is shining like a new nickle. i look a second time, to be sure, and lo and behold! 300 feet in front of the truck, is an all white goldwing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lights on, chrome shining, both blending in with the front of the truck! i guess what i'm trying to say, is that sometimes you really DON'T see the motorcycle, even in bright ,clear daylight!!!!!!!!! you guys be extra careful out there! just jt
  12. Hello all, I'm new to this site and lookin for some information. I just bought a fixer upper from a friend of mine. Ot's a 92 Venture, so far I have replaced the vacuum lines to the cruise, carb boots which connect the carbs to the heads, repair the connections to the suspension controller(E4 error). Next on my list is to replace the rear brake rotor. It seems to be warped. When applying the brakes there is a definite shudder and the front rotors look fine. My question is what other bikes use the same rotor, are some of the front rotors the same as the rears? I have been searching ebay and there are a few out there. I am on a limited budget and looking for a deal.
  13. Looking for some expertise. The bike is an 84 with about 55,000 miles on it. I seem to bottom out when hitting a bump especially with two up even when the air pressure in the front fork is set to 16 psi. Some suggest going to progressive springs. Any comments would be helpful. How much are these units worth? There are a couple of threads on front fork springs but none on the anti-dive mechanism. The manual says they cant be overhauled. Has anybody had a go at these units? All advise would be appreciated. Thank you
  14. Hello to all!!! I have noticed a front end wobble on my bike. I put on the cruise control and took my hands off the bars a couple inches and within seconds it started to wobble. I have never had a bike do that:no-no-no:. I read up on this in another section and how many foot lbs of torque do i have to put on the bearings after i repack them? This site is awesome:happy65:. So far i have read up on how to bleed the rear brakes on my bike and how to repair the suspension computer. I need to put seals in the forks so that will be my next project minus the stealer mechanics bill:rotf:
  15. Well, I am doing some last minute fixes and upgrades before Ft. Collins, so I installed the Venture Line front rotor covers and caliper covers I had laying around for a while. Somebody mentioned a while back that the rotor covers require a shorter axle spacer to adjust for the thickness of the covers. I bought the covers used, of course, without a spacer or installation instructions. Just gave it a try this afternoon while the bike was on the lift, unbolted the calipers, pulled the axle and dropped the front wheel. The covers went in without a major problem, just held the covers in place and then lowered the bike over the wheel. Really no interference with the extra thickness of the covers. I tightened the axle and torqued the pinch bolt and installed the caliper covers. The covers must have been made for an earlier bike, mine is an '89, I had to cut some material out for the anti-dive wiring and put a little notch in the lower portion to clear the fork tubes. Anyway, the front wheel now does not turn as easy as before, feels as if there is a lot more friction, most likely due to the thickness of the rotor covers. Has anybody installed these covers before using the original spacer? Was there a shorter spacer for the right side included with the original Venture Line kit? If that's the case, does anybody have a shorter spacer or an extra spacer that I can mill down to match? Or should I not worry about it and try a few miles? Another thing I would like to know is if the inserts in the chrome were available in matching colors for the bike, I can not recall ever seeing a blue inlaid set. The caliper covers are inlaid black and gold, the caliper covers brown and tan. Thanks in advance, Klaus
  16. OK - so the motorcycle guy replaces the front fork springs. Compressor runs, pressure builds up nicely and holds - BUT - there is no difference between low and high pressure on the front suspension. Front end bounces down just as easily on high pressure (17 psi) as on low pressure (7 psi) Previously I could see the forks extending when the pressure went up, and theren was a noticble differencem but not now. No error messages on the computer read out. 1987 venture royale. Any ideas about what went wrong? Or what to do for a fix?
  17. I sold my '90 a few weeks ago. I had never had any oil leak of any type. The new owner says it is leaking while riding but not when parked. Leak seems to come from above the shifter. A few days prior to selling, I found a rectangular rubber cap thing ( hey I'm NOT mechanical) maybe 2 x 3 in. near the front left peg/shifter area on the ground. I assume it is from the bike. I've looked at schematics but don't see it. Any ideas may be helpful. Thanks.
  18. Last year I put an Elite III on the rear onf my '86 and I now need to replace my front tire. It seems that the E3's for the front are not being made yet and I can't seem to find the K491 avaiable, they are all backordered. Dunlop said that more E2's won't be ready until mid July. Has anyone tried using an E3 on the back and the Avon Venom AM41 on the front? Are there any handling or vibrations from mixing these tires? Thanks Mike
  19. I recently purchased a 2006 RSV. I really like it. The ride is plush and I like all the other ammenities. My wife really likes the big back seat. BUTTTTTTTT... I am a big guy and the driver's seat isn't comfortable at all. It offers no lower back support and that hump on the front of it does a number on the family jewels. Is there something more comfortable out there? I can probably "break my body in" to the hump in the front of the seat but I need more back support. I see there are driver backrests out there. I was hoping someone here might have one for sale that I can buy so I won't be out the full $250-300 for a new one if it doesn't work out for me... Thanks SpEEd Safely CG
  20. This site has the most knowledgible people (How's this for suckin up), I'm hopin someone can help my brother. He has a 2003 V-Max. I rode it this past weekend and boy does it have front end wobble. I attempted to tighten the nut at the trippletree and discovered a locking shim down through the two big nuts. Am I going to have to remove the Handle bars and the top of the tree, to tighten up the front end??? This shim is a small square that fits in the slots of the two big nuts, and sits in there up and down, locking them together. Help! Saddle_Bag
  21. I would appreciate the steps to bleeding the front brakes on my 1973 Yamaha Venture XVZ12 Thanks Garry
  22. Well i am almost set the bike is starting from a battery i had. Now i need to order one for it as well as front brake pads. Any recommendations on what battery and what type of pads.Thanx
  23. I know most of us don't ride around without our hands on the handle bars, but on occasion when I am riding with one hand or if I let go of the stearing my front wheel will start to shimmy. Once I grab on it will go away. Has anyone else exeperianced this? Is there something that I sould look into or is this normal?
  24. Went riding today. It was great: sunny and 80. Anyhow, cleaning the bikes after dinner, I lost a screw and nut on the front, front fender trim. I had tightened it once before, but did not think much else of it. Guess I will be pulling the other nuts and adding a little bit of tread lock. Glad I did not lose the trim piece.
  25. What's the recommendation on how many miles to run between tire rotations front to back, you know, like we do on cars? Y'all do rotate your tires front to back periodically, don't you?
