  1. OK, I'm gonna have to do some pad replacing this winter. The thieves at the local stealership want $86 for a set of pads. I found these on Ebay for under half the price. Has anyone had any experience with these pads or this seller? Thanks!
  2. a few weeks ago i started a thread saying my dealership had closed its doors and i had purchased a 3 year maintenance agreement with my bike.. after making about what seems like 100 phone calls i found out today my "tread head" has been transfered to another dealer a little further away but i still have the remainder of my contract.. great news for me
  3. Does anyone know how tight (Ft pounds) to get the 6 bolts that hold the diaphram pressure plate on a 87 VR??? I need to put it back together and just found out the correct torque is not listed in the operators manuel. Thanks!!!!
  4. FROG MAN

    DUI

My hats off to that local unknown officer who caught a DUI driver last night. He was on his way to get a little something extra for the pain. Might have been a DUID if caught later. Many thanks and coffee is on me. If you found any air tools it's worth a steak dinner.Nice mug shot at the regional. MamaMo is still crying tears of joy.
  5. I'm doing a little preventative maintenance on my 07RSV. Found missing screw on trunk lid slider but screw was in trunk. Tightened others. Aslo putting on light bar for brake lights from Signal Dynamics. Found out need to have 1" spacers. My main question is do you loose any memory (not mine, the radio or computer) by disconnecting the wiring connectors under the front cowl to install the dielectric grease? Also should I disconnect the battery first? Thought I'd better get this stuff done before it's too late. Thanks for any replies.
  6. Has anyone found an after market chrome radiator cover that will fit a 07 RSV? I had LED lights installed for night riding and would like to have some chrome up front to light up the front end. The cover that I have found on line says it will fit only 99-05. It appears there may have been some change from 05 t0 07 regarding the radiator (anyone know if this is true). Thanks in advance.
  7. As some of you know, I recently went from an 06 RSV to an 09 Ultra, after the RSV was written off in a wreck. I loved my RSV, and we managed to put on quite a few miles (71,000 kms) over the 3 years that we had her. Most of our riding - I'd say probably 70% of the total mileage - was done 2 up. The first season and a half, I ran the Bridgestones, and changed them for an Avon rear and Dunlop front during our second riding season. This past year, I ran the Avon on the rear and a Metzeler on the front. A few weeks ago, I picked up an 09 Ultra, and over the past couple of weeks I was able to ride it for about 3,500 kms while in Florida. So, while I'm riding the new bike, of course I am making comparisons to the RSV all the time. I thought I would share my first impressions with you - now, to be totally fair, the riding on the Ultra has been 100% solo, so I know that I am comparing one kind of apple with a different kind of apple ... Slow speed maneuvering is much easier/better on the Ultra - note that I had never ran the narrower front tire on the RSV, so I don't know what that would handle like. I found the Ultra to be quite a bit more "nimble" at all speeds, and cornering was quite a joy (not that there are many twisties in Florida to give it a true test!). I was very surprised by how much more nimble it felt, given that there isn't too much difference in weight between the two bikes. Wind buffeting is much greater with the Ultra, especially at highway speeds. Now, I was riding in flat, windy Florida, so that may have something to do with it, but I have ridden the RSV under similar conditions and never found it to be as much of a factor. You also get a lot more wind onto your legs on the Ultra than on the RSV. I found the audio components to be better on the Ultra. The sound quality (the 09 comes with a Hamon-Kardon unit) is better and the controls for controlling the various bands, volume, etc. I found much easier to use. I did not have a chance to try out the CB unit on the Ultra (as an aside, I was a little surprised to find that the comm unit headset came with the bike). Driver comfort on long rides can't be beat on the RSV. With the Ultra, I did Sarasota to Daytona without a driver's back rest and found my back was aching at the end of the day. I did get a driver's back rest put on for the Sarasota to Key West run, and no more back pain. But the pillow top seats, with the Diamond R back rest on the RSV was A1. The test of that was an 1,100 kms, 12 hour ride that I put in a couple of yeards back, between Hampton Beach, NH and St. Thomas, Ont. Engine heat is still very noticeable on the Ultra, even with the new cross-over pipes and the standard heat deflectors on the 09. We didn't get too many REAL hot weather in Florida over the last two weeks, but if we were tied up in traffic, I could really feel the heat on my legs, especially on the right side. I never had a similar problem with the RSV. Seat height for a short $hit like me (5' 7") is a bit of an issue with either bike. After the first season with the RSV, I had some foam shaved off the side of the seat and that fixed it for me. I will have to do something to lower the seat height on the Ultra as well - not much, but maybe an inch. The stock windshields, for someone who is short, make you look through them. At least on the Ultra, if I had a need to look over it, I can just stretch my neck out a bit and be able to look over the shield. I found the bikes have very different seating positions. I find myself more upright on the Ultra - which, if nothing else should improve my posture! Personally, I think I like this set up better. Luggage space and ease of removal of saddlebags go in favour of the Ultra. I added the quick removal saddlebag hardware to the RSV, but even then it wasn't the most effective and quick way to get them off. And although there is lots of space on the RSV, the Ultra has more - and, the tour pack bag and the saddlebag bags come standard with the bike too. I like the EFI on the Ultra versus the carbs on the RSV. Throttle response overall on the Ultra is quicker than I found on the RSV. Both bikes can sure motor though - whether it's the 5th gear on the V4 kicking in, or the 6th speed on the VTwin, you know you've got lots of power under you. When I first saw the dash on the RSV, I was impressed by it - simple, with that marbled look (like an old style Buick?). But the Ultra, with the gauges, and the chrome accents (not standard) also looks real sharp. Availability of parts and accessories go hands down to the Ultra. So, as much as I loved the RSV, I am really thinking that I am going to enjoy this new bike equally as much. Of course though, it will still have to pass the ultimate test, and that will be when the better half gets on the back. Only she can give it the final stamp of approval!!! Cheers,
  8. Hi all, I have come to you today for the sole purpose of finding pity and commiseration. From the age of 15, up until about ten years ago I have always had a bike between my knees. My favorite being an 83 royale I purchased new and had until 99. After a divorce it wasnt 10 years before I was finally able to afford the 89 that my wife found me for christmas last year Now after only 4532 miles I have suffered the unimaginable! After a tumble down the stairs I have found the absolute worst bone any rider can break. The coxix . At three weeks out, I'm getting the sweats just watching the rider icon above! Not to worry though. I figure by the time I am confident in my ability to lift my leg over the seat, I will have figured out a way to mount a discrete donut in my seat run off the bikes compressor. If there hapens to be anyone that has suffered a fractured @ss and found a way to make riding more comfortable, PLEASE fill me in !! Pain Hmmm, I can't help but wonder if I somehow saw this coming when I chose my screen name......

  10. I just wanted to throw a couple of kudos at a vendor I had good dealings with. I just got my RSTD a month or so ago and I missed the backrest I had on my V-Star. I searched and searched and finally found the one I wanted at "Scootworks" I placed the order online and called the next day to see when it would ship. I got a machine and thought that would be the end of that. I've gotten so used to no one returning my calls. Well an hour later a friendly lady called and explained that they didn't have the backrest in stock, but they should have it by Monday and I would have it 2 days later (this was on a Thursday). I never really expect anything when I'm told to expect it, so I was thinking maybe the following Friday I'd have it. Well to my amazement I found it on my front porch the next Monday 2 days quicker than I was told. I like to ***** when I get bad service, so it's only fair I rave a little when the service is good. 11. I have found rocker switches, toggle switches, push button switches, water proof caps for any, mounting plates for multiple switches, but I have NOT found a single switch housing with two or three rockers/toggles. Does such an animal exist and if so where? Thanks!
  12. New Found Freedom I would say. Have a local guy that had been talking to me about motorcycles. He is a big guy over 6ft would say around 300lb. Just one Problem he has had left knee surgery more than once in the last two years. He currently has a brace on that leg walking with a walker. Had told him about some of you guys. How Yammer used a rope to shift before, about my voyager kit. Well he did it:clap2:, purchased himself a 02 red Honda (wife said the only way he could get a bike if it was RED) added a Voyager kit said he also tried the rope shifting but found it was tough. He just installed a Kliktronic electronic shifter. Had been riding with it for three days when he stopped and seen me. Man the smile on his face. So here are the pics. I know the rules. He really tried to get out of the pics But you know me. Here's to many happy years of riding Dave. By the way strips that walker right to the back of it using the voyager kit for a support. When there is the will there is a way
  13. went looking for some new boots but the only thing i found that looked good all said H-D on them found some good looking red wings any body got s good pair of red wings and a number for that style?
  14. Who is using an after-market OIL filter adapter on a first-gen(86-93) I had one of the "ears" on the housing(stops housing from turning when installing and removing) fall into the drain pan when I changed oil on Sat. and was fine driving around until Tues, morning when I arrived at work and bike started to drip a little. When I came out after work and started it up it dripped a whole lot (unsafe) so I got a ride home and went back to trailer it home.Put on my repair-table and found it was leaking where the "ear" broke off. Am now looking at after-market adapters to replace it. Found one made out of billet alluminum but not sure about them---don't want to go to salvage yard as they would be as old as mine so could be as much trouble in long run. Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!
  15. I found this a couple of weeks ago, but didn't get the chance to post it. Thought a few might get a kick out of it.
  16. I finally found something a 1st Gen can outrun.
  17. We all complain about the amount of boolsheet that is out there on the highways today. We have all seen it and had to deal with it. I have found the problem! If we can find this guy we can stop it today! Stand together and fight the boolsheet on our American Highways TODAY!
  18. For those of you who buy on credit a question? Yamaha factory financing rates are 7.99% for 72 months. Is this a good deal compared to say a bank? Are motorcycle financing rates higher then an automobile? I have used Yamaha before on ATV financing and found the minimum payment due is less then half the normal monthly payment on promotion.I never had to use that option but found it nice in case of temporary hard times. No money down just sign and drive. Don't forget about the catch though. If a payment is missed the default rate goes to say 27% or if the promotion is not paid in full at 72 months you can expect 18.99% for the balance.Banks may be cheaper interest but require money down or shorter terms. No I'm not buying just always looking.

    Ride On

I use it and just found this article. Interesting. http://www.ride-on.com/newsDetails.asp?nid=56
  20. While I am waiting on my new tires to get here I decided to go try some of the techniques in "Ride Like a Pro V". Well I certainly found out that I am nowhere near as good hauling this big gen1 around as I am an XR400! I also found out the hard way that I needed the first thing taught in the video....how to get your bike back upright! One of the things that is stressed in the video is to practice in a controlled setting so you don't have to learn things the hard way, in an uncontrolled setting! I'm glad my spill happened in a parking lot, and not on the road! I scraped up a bag protector and ended up with a stubbed middle toe, but other than that me and the bike are both ok. The little women in those videos sure make things look easy. It is amazing at how agile they are on these huge bikes! The one thing they have done to get their skills to where they are is to practice. I obviously have a lot more practice to do before I can even get close to their skill level, and before I let my wife on the back of the bike. I will also plan on practicing the skills taught in the video with her on the back. I've already got 4 fused vertebrae from being foolish. I don't want to add any more battle scars to my collection or start a collection for her! I'm glad that I've found this site, everyone has been very helpful. I will follow and learn from others, and help out when I can. The internet is such an amazing place, and I hope I will eventually get to meet many of you in person Also, now that I've had a chance to read more....I'm not sure if I really need a crotch rocket with suitcases, so I'll ride my mkII very reserved, and as much in control as I can get her. I appreciate all the camaraderie that I've observed at VR!
  21. Well I found out tonight why Yamaha put a "soft" clutch in the Venture. My son and I went out on a day trip today and as we were getting close to home we stopped at a traffic light. It was late with no traffic around and we were in separate lanes. He gets froggy and starts revving the engine on the Nomad and hollers over at me "what ya got old man"? Wellll, I have never been one to let and insult pass me by, especially from a mere youngster, (he's 24), so I got the Venture rolling, pulled the clutch in and hit the throttle a couple of times, then hammered on it... BIG MISTAKE!!! :bang head: This was my first real hard hole shot since I did the clutch up-grade and let me tell you... IT WORKS. That clutch grabbed hold, the rear tire went to spinning and smoking, the rear end went sideways, my butt puckered up and I just held on til I was WAYYYYY out in front. Talk about a rush... Don't wanna do it again, but oh, what a feeling. Before when I tried this the clutch would slip, not much, but just enough that it wouldn't let the rear tire break traction. I think I am going to like this set-up much better.
  22. I just got back from 1700 mile trip to Duluth with a side trip to Chippewa Falls to see my daughter. Everything went pretty good except the first night when I pulled into the campground in Iowa I smelled antifreeze. Got off the bike and looked and one tube had a dent and there was a double spray of antifreeze. Thought my whole trip was ruined. I bought some stopleak and a package of JB Weld waterweld.Put the stopleak in and mixed up a ball of the epoxy and smashed it in around the damaged tube. Very nervously the next morning we headed on north. Never saw a drop of fluid leak or I probably would have turned around and headed back home. I hauled 2 gallons of antifreeze around the rest of the trip just in case. Tonight looking online for a new radiator the cheapest price I found was from a boat dealer. I was searching with the Yamaha # that I found at a motorcycle website. 4XY-12461-00-00 That surely is the same # all the way through the Yamaha system and they don't have a boat radiator with the same #. Maybe it fits a jetski. Can anybody confirm this?
