  1. So as you might know I just got my 03 RSV and it now has stock exhaust I wanted to get it a bit louder but not real loud. Has anyone do any type mod to there exhaust. I got a pair of Sampsom Fishtails with the bike but was told they are LOUD!!!!
  2. and I promise this will be my last post on this subject. Flame it if you must, but just read it all before you do. After the "healthy" discussion in the previously related post I decided to get an experts view on the AIS. I talked to a factory-cert'd mechanic today and asked him to explain the system in general, not just specific to our Ventures. He said that any changes to the exhaust, from merely drilling small holes in the baffles, to a full-on custom exhaust will cause the injection system to perform at less-than-designed efficiency. The less back-pressure, or restriction down stream will allow more fresh, cooler air to be drawn thru the injection system into the exhaust, thereby causing the detonation of unburned gasses that we hear. He said this was one of the issues that H-D encountered when they introduced the "parade-mode" of dropping the rear cylinder in idling situations to help keep the bike cooler. Add aftermarket pipes and the amount of fresh air being pumped into the rear cylinder increased and caused the same thing we are seeing when the rear cylinder came back up. He said he has tried unsucessfully to fabricate some sort of "orfice" that would restrict the amount of air equal to stock conditions. He said fuel injected bikes were less-succeptible to it, and easier to correct. I asked if he had encountered other problems thru the years that contributed to the problem, and he said "of course", the same as mentioned here, fouled plugs, leaky vac. lines, old fuel, and on and on, but the main problem was the relieving of the back pressure. He's an old-school kind of guy, so I didn't bring up the Polar Bears and global warming. I'm done now.
  3. Right hand side exhaust on my '99 RSV finally rusted through. I ride year-round in New England. I see that new OEM exhaust pipes are around $250 each side but the mufflers are around $800+!!! I want nice and quiet exhaust. I see lots of posts about after market slip-ons and HD exhaust. Any suggestions for moderately priced exhaust system? Anyone have 2nd Gen exhaust for sale?
  4. ooooooooooh, ever see two grown men giggling like little school children? A friend had sent me some Larossa downturn slippons to try on my RSV as he didn't need them anymore, these were brand new and they installed easily, replacing the screaming eagles I had on prior. Wow.. these things are loud lol.. but not harsh on the ears (well not harsh to motorcycle enthusiatsts at least) Just the flash up sound, idling and blipping of the throttle brought huge smiles to our faces hehe.. (still chuckling about it..) I will one of the first to say I doubt I'd run with these on for long as I think that under full power they will be very very TOO loud.. And I'm not sure how they would react with the bike without any additional tweaking beyond my abilities.. However, I would ask if the learned and experienced minds here could help me out with some pre ride observations.. When I blip the throttle, there is a burbling noise not normally heard with the other pipes.. THIS would be akin to the sounds people hear making them want to remove the AIS. So I would assume that when I roll down the highway, and decellerate, I'm going to get a lot of blurbling.. Remembering Goose's sage words about not removing one's AIS for troubling purposes, I'll be leaving it on.. However, I'm just curious about the blurbling sounds.. Exhaust temp.. What caught us by surprise is the amount of air being pushed out of the ends and the lack of heat.. no kidding. When you look down the end of the pipe, you can see the glow of daylight through the other end at the downturn.. I would have assumed I'd feel more heat in the exhaust gasses. and the volume of air is less also. To compare, my buddy rolled out his RSV with stock pipes, and you could feel heat in his exhaust almost right away. Strange.. Now the next part I may know the answer anyway but the exhaust gases feel 'wet'.. but in no way what so ever smell like fuel, not even a little.. because these are downturns, they leave a wet spot on the pavement.. It's warm and humid here, so I'm assuming this is all normal.. Tonight, if it's not raining as normal, I'll be taking this out on the highway with my cameras to record the sounds.. if it's not that hard on the ears, I may leave them on for a while but man, I have the funny feeling they won't be there for too long hehe.. what a sound though.. nice!!
  5. was at the dealer's today getting periodic maintenance done...they have an '05 RSV for sale that has Krome Werks exhaust on it...they started it up for me so I could hear them...awesome! They even took it out on the road and rode it by a couple of times...I was very impressed at the sound. Does anyone have this exhaust on their RSV?
  6. Just to let you 1st genners know I put an exhaust extention in the classifieds, make an offer and it might just be yours
  7. Riding in the hills of southern Ohio allowing the engine of hold/reduce speed on declines, exhaust fumes drawn to passenger area. Wife wearing 3/4 helmet with face shield, which undoubtedly accumulated fumes inside shield. Riding with a Clearview XXL windshield with vent open. I noticed some intermittent exhaust fumes, but did not suspect wife would be negatively impacted. Anyone have input to determine root cause and corrective action?
  8. I have a 1987 Venture Royale. My crossover pipe has a large crack in it. I want to remove it and have it welded. I took the mufflers off. How do I take the crossover pipe off without taking the whole exhaust off?
  9. There is a small hole in the front bottom of each muffler that I assume is a drain hole. when I push a small screw driver into he hole it only goes into the outer chamber of the muffler and not to the inside. I was running some Seafoam through the other day and noticed smoke coming out of the small drain holes. Is this normal for exhaust to come out of the drain holes? If you hold your hand under the hole the exhaust is coming out at a pretty good flow. Second question. I replaced the four engine exhaust gaskets. Now it appears that the left rear is leaking between the collector and rear left exhaust pipe. Should I have replaced the wide copper bands inside at each joint as well?
  10. I see in previous posts (2 years old) that there is a way to put exhaust tips on the stock RSV mufflers, but I do not see any pictures. I took cut the inside cone out of the end of the exhaust pipes then drilled the last baffle wall. I am happy with the sound, but not so much the look. Temp fix is I will get some hi-heat silver paint.
  11. I have a 98 rstd. Was going to get slip on mufflers but noticed exhaust is all one piece. When i was shopping for slip ons i noticed they never listed my year of bike-it started in 99. Does anyone make a whole exhaust kit or does anyone have any ideas or who i can turn to for after market support.
  12. My 07 is just over 3000 miles and it seem over the last two weeks the bike is getting louder.. I have had to turn up the volumn on the stereo up two numbers.. It sounds mostly like exhaust tone,, I haven't put a wrench on the exhaust collars but they seem tight. Is this normal?
  13. I noticed since I got my 07 Venture out this year that I have what seems to be an exhaust smell in the driver's area from time to time. My wife does not notice it at all in the passengers seat. So today I checked a few things out and here is what I found. I discovered I have small exhaust leaks at both of the "Y" crimped connections. I removed the tank and discovered oil seepage around the left front carb boot where it connects to the air box. Needless to say there shouldnt be oil up there. I removed the air box and checked inside and found oil in the air box. It appears to have been sucked in from the crankcase vent. There was more on the left side than on the right. I cleaned everything up and put it back together. I remembered reading on this site about what happens if the engine oil level is to high. Mine was pretty much at the top mark so I drained a bit of oil out until it was at mid level. I have not had a chance for a test ride yet as it has been pouring rain all day I run two cans of seafoam thru each year at the beginning and end of season The carbs are in sync All of this leads to a few questions which I am hoping someone can help with. Could the oil level be what caused the oil in the airbox or do I have another problem? Would the oil being sucked in also give me the exhaust smell I have been experiencing? It sounds like leaking "Y" connections are quite common as they are crimped and not welded. Would they cause the exhaust smell? Should I be after Yamaha to replace them or will the new ones be any better? Because some oil could has been sucked in should I clean the carbs somehow. I thought about dumping some seafoam into the intake of each carb and let it work its way thru. Is that a good idea? Lots of questions I know. Thanks in advance for any and all advise. Jim
  14. Can anyone recommend where a Canadian can purchase a color tune kit for a 2006 RSV? (which size, 12mm?) and a clamp on tach? The only tachs I can find are all in the US and for what ever strange reason they can ship to Canada.. what is it, top secret technology? My exhaust IS sooty compared to the other RSV bikes I checked out so I'm guessing I'm running rich.. (I have K&N filters and Screamin Eagle pipes and burn premium) Any help would be appreciated.. Anyone know where to get the appropriate 10 psi air pump for the front shocks? Thanks in advance! Cheers
  15. Just wondering if anyone at Don's MD will want something welded. Someone mentioned plating over an exhaust collector. If there is enough interest, I may drag my MIG along.
  16. Got her out a little this evening. Finished blowing bottom out of exhaust chamber!! Make as much noise as my neighbor's Hardley. But she is running and going down the road without any problems. Little shake if you turn loose of the bars at 50 mph. Probally that Brickstone on the front. Patched that exhaust chamber and those Jardines really sounded sweet for about 15 miles. Then POW!!! Not ment for me to own a pretty (no scratches) or a quiet bike. But 2nd gear will crank out 70 mph pretty quick. I'll shut up now. Still pretty pumped. Only got in about 40 miles. Maybe a night ride??
  17. I was all set to get Goldie inspected Friday afternon. I pulled it out into the driveway and started it up, left it idling, and went in to get my wallet and helmet. Came out and smoke was rising from the side cover! Seems that I forgot to redress the power lead for the running lights on the chrome chin, and it was against the exhaust pipe. Stupid me!!!!! Now I get to chaqnge out the harness, and hope that the regulator, and my new high output stator, are still all right...
  18. how many of us 2nd genners have the bub exhaust on our scoots? my bub's were on the bike when i bought it almost 5 years ago. they still look and sound good. but just this week i've noticed the right bub is makeing a rattling/tenny sound when warming the bike up. it goes away after a few minutes. i guess i need to repack them. i though i read some where about how to repacking them. best reguards don c.
  19. Well I need some information. A friend has a RSV and four sets of pipes. A set of Wild Pigs which is on the load side, a set of stock pipes that are on the quite side. Two set of what we believe are Harley pipes that are shaped similar to the stock RSV pipes. One set has HAR FLT 1584 and the other set has HAR FLT 1584/1688 stamped on them. We want to hear how they sound but are concerned with how they are made. Both sets look identical. On both sets looking down the right hand pipes from the rear you can see a piece of metal that tapers off to one side down near the center or the pipe. No problem looks like the exhaust can exit unrestricted. The left had pipes you can not see through. At about the same position as the right pipes it looks like four courners have been folded in to close off the pipe. Between this "plug" and the exhaust end of the pipe is some holes for the exhaust gases to exit the pipe. I do not know why they are different but my concern is that the left side back pressure will be different from the right side back pressure and whether or not that if the two sides back pressures are different will that hurt the bike or it's performance.:think:
  20. My exhaust on the '87 VR is starting to get loud. It's hard to describes because it's not just a loud muffler type noise....it sort of comes and goes throughout the acceleration. Is quiter when cruising and off the accelerator. Seems to get a little quieter after it has warmed up, but not as quiet as it should. I have visually inspected the system and can't see any obvious rust through holes or anything that would appear to be the problem. As a result, I can't pinpoint it with my ear either. I am hoping the issue is gaskets between the exhaust and the cylinder head. To get to the front cylinder heads where the exhaust ports are, do I need to remove the rad? It looks that way. How do I get to the rear cylinder exhaust ports?
  21. Found an interesting article on the fuzz using louder exhaust. It's seemed funny that it said there was no proof that louder exhaust reduces accidents but it was very clear to me. I had a stock Dynaglide muffler on a Suzuki S40. Not real loud but a bit more then the too quiet stock one. I used to average having someone switch into my lane once a day. With the muffler change it never did end up happening again, though with time eventually some blind moron would have done it. Jerry http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/06/09/BAJB114OUT.DTL&tsp=1
  22. I finally figured out how to post some photos. I have them in my profile. Haven't quite got how to post here yet. I finished installing a set of Platinum burners from wally world, I hope that they help others to see me. I also installed a set of OEM mufflers I got from AtlantaDragonslayer (thanks, Bob). I like the quiet exhaust. The previous owner took out the baffles and this made them too loud for me. Take care, Dave
  23. Need to replace the exhaust gaskets on both rear cylinders (someone took the old ones off and didn't replace them. No wonder there's a leak) I noticed the manifold slips into the bracket bolted to the cylinder so I take it I have to drop the manifold to pull it out to get the gaskets in place? I have the shop manual printed out but seems the one page that shows removal is corrupted in the PDF file (figures) So any advice on doing this?
  24. I have a Venture Royale that I picked up for $300.00 and is in pretty decent shape. I also ride a 1200 Aspencade Goldwing that I have done alot of work on. Put a new battery in,new fuel filter and lines, plugs, chacked air filter and it fired up on the first spin. Put seafoam in and ran on center stand for awhile. Great throttle response and good idle only when it idles there is an occasional pop coming from the rear cylinders in the exhaust area.Any thoughts on what it could be? Maybe leaking from exhaust flange? I cant ride it yet as I need to fix the sightglass on clutch master, repair rear brakes and master and fix the fan. Fan works if unplug and ground out so may be temp sending unit. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
  25. My RSV is the first bike I've had that has a windshield and I'm constantly smelling/breathing exhaust fumes, pretty much at any speed. My wife days she can't smell anything from the back seat. I have an aftermarket shield that kinda slopes more vertically toward the top. The previous owner installed a Goldwing vent in it, presumably 'cause he was experiencing the same issue. Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?
