  1. We're in the middle of a long weekend in my home state Down Under. Last Tuesday (it's now Saturday) I had my bike booked in to the local Yamahaha dealer for a 40,000kms service and a new rear tyre. Was supposed to pick it up the following day after it had been allowed to cool so the valves could be checked or whatever they do at the 40k service. Mid-morning Wednesday I'm told that the 'parts' they needed hadn't arrived on the courier service and it would be another day. "No problems", sez me. I'll get a lift in to town with a work colleague the next day. That night the dealer rings to tell me that his mechanic has stuffed his back "putting my carbies back in" and is off work - hopefully back on deck "later in the day". He would let me know by 6pm if it's right to go by the next morning. I did not hear back from him so I cancelled my lift with my friend. I gave him until noon Friday to ring me but I heard nothing. Meantime the daily train has passed through so I've missed that. Mid afternoon I ring to see how it's going and I'm told that the job card is being written up "as we speak and she's right to go." "That's fine," sez me. "But how do I get in to pick it up?" (Mind you I'm 25kms out of town with no other wheels as my pillion is away in the car visiting family.) Stony silence from the other end. I'm waiting for something like, "No worries. We'll slip out and pick you up", or "Give us an hour and we'll pop it on a trailer and deliver it to you." Nuh. No such offers. I abruptly told them to lock it up in the workshop and I'll pick it up on Tuesday (after the long weekend) when everybody's back at work. I also let it be known that I planned on taking off for a couple of days riding but that was now impossible. I'm sure the tone of my voice at that stage expressed my complete and utter dissatisfaction. So, tell me - how does a one day job turn in to a week? Just like it did above. Wonder what sort of 'compensation discount' I'll get. Unfortunately the closest other Yamahaha dealer is an hour and a half away.

We don't have a local dealer any more so I have to drive about 40 miles to Bob's Motor sports in Chatham ON (http://www.bobsmotorsport.com/) to buy parts etc. I stopped in this week to see if they had a new shifter bolt to replace the one I lost. They don't stock that part but one was available at the warehouse in Toronto. Rather then make me have to go back to pick it up they removed the one from the RSV in the showroom and sold it to me. It was a small gesture but it was very much appreciated. I've always been very impressed with these folks. It's a small, family owned business that always seems to go above and beyond for the customer.
  3. I have noticed a rattle in two of my speakers one in back and one in front both on the right side. Still have warranty left so should be covered right. Also cassette quit this past weekend had to dig the tape out. Is it worth having the dealer replace the speakers or are there better replacement speakers out there. Can't decide on whether to have the tape deck replaced or not my late 70's early 80's collection showing a lil age. My dealer told me that clarion was the one to warranty repairs on the radio and you kind of get what you get on replacement he mentioned refurbished control as an example. What should i expect from my dealer. Has this been an issue for anyone like to have my guns loaded when i take it in if i need them.
  4. Howdy all, I have a friend with an 87 Venture. He loves his bike. I am hoping to find a salvage yard or some place to get a few things for him. He is missing some relay that is located on the upper right hand of his dash. He has to put a paperclip in the socket for it or his turn signals won't work - but if he leaves it in his battery will go dead. He is also having problems with his ignition switch - it will start but the headlight will not come back on after cranking. I would like to purchase these items for him and help him install them so we can ride together without worry of him breaking down. Anyone know of a Yamaha graveyard or something where I can acquire these parts? I have tried the local Yamaha dealer here in Omaha and they are no help. I rode to Cripple Creek, CO for the veterans rally and a vet who served in Viet-Nam with my father that rides a Venture told me about this forum. Any help would be appreciated.   5. One word,,,,,,, "Oh crap". Was crusing down I-20 with traffic at about 75 when the rear tire started getting squirlly. Pulled off just in time to pull in to a parking lot. Yep, flat rear, bolt in the tire. My son-in-law brought my trailer. As I was about to ride up the ramp he said,,,, "you sure you can make that angle?". I said yeah,,,, without really checking. You guessed it, the oil pan hit the trailer bed edge and knocked the oil plug 1/2 way out and broke open the bottom of the oil pan, setting up for a rapid oil drain. I will check with the dealer and look on Pinwall. But my dealer is great and likely will take it there. SO,,, Anyone got guesses on repair cost. I'm guessing the only damage is the oil pan it's self.   6. Hey fellow riders, I just had my second windshield replaced because of cracking from the bottom. The first, about a year and a half ago, was cracked between the left two bolt holes. It was replaced by the dealer under warranty, no problems. This time it cracked out of the far left bolt hole. I printed off the info from this site about the rear fairing bosses breaking and the support bar being a little out of shape. When the dealer took the windshield off, that was the case. They replaced the rear fairing and the support bar along with the windshield, all under warranty. Hope this solves the issue for future cracking as I only have one year left under warranty. Great dealer to work with, Yamaha Jack's in Ellensburg, Wa. I can tell the rear fairing is a lot more evenly spaced from the handlebar mounts so I'm assuming the support bar was a lot of the problem. Don.
  7. Well, so much for getting the 08 triked.... Ordered it in January, paid deposit and shipped side case(colormatch) to Hannigan in February, took bike to dealer in Florida 3 March, kitwas SUPPOSED to ship from Kentucky 8 March, called dealer to check on progress yesterday (3/16), and he told me the factory in KY had burned down along with my kit and sidecase. Could be months before the factory is up and running and can punch out another RSV kit. To add to the misfortune, I had stripped some of the addons from the rear of the bike that wouldn't be used on the trike and I had to trailer it to the dealer because it had recently picked up a screw in the rear tire. Sooo, 'To Trike or Not to Trike, That is the Question'. Okay, not quite Shakespeare.. Either way, The situation inhales with a vacum like force..
  8. This is how my day is going.... Truck went to a idle and that's it.. I was on my way to the dealer to get the A/C fixed for the 5th time.... It looks great,but I can't keep it out of the shop....
  9. We had a potential costly situation with a trike dealer turn into a positive experience for us. For a couple of years Phil has been dreaming and planning to trike out his bike before he retires. The back in the beginning of August he pulled the trigger and put down a 50% deposit with the Oklahoma Hannigan Trike Dealer. He's been smiling non stop for the last 3 weeks. Earlier this week I was online paying some bills and noticed that the dealer had not cashed our check yet and that bothered me. The day next we got a letter in the mail with two sentences on it. "I cannot do your trike conversion." "I am returning your check." At least the dealer returned our check, but we still don't know what happened, we can only speculate. We are very lucky that our check was returned and that he had not deposited it and then told us try to get it back. We could have lost that money. (Of course I would have made his life uncomfortable if he had. I would have turned our daughter the lawyer loose on him.) Here's where the story turns positive. Phil called Hanningan Factory the next day. He made up his mind that he was going to trailer his bike to Kentucky and get the factory to install the trike kit. Phil talked with John from Hannigan, and John was fantastic. He was upset about the OKC situation and uphappy because the dealer has not talked with them. But he also told Phil that he was going to put us in touch with another dealer who would treat us right. He even made the phone call to the new dealer to contact us. In an hour we had a call from Gary with Lone Star Trikes and he and Phil were busy working out a work order for the trike. By the middle of the afternoon we had an invoice emailed to us and confirmation that the trike kit had been ordered at Hannigan with a mid October delivery date for the kit. Lone Star Trikes is even going to stop by the house and pick up the bike. I cannot say enough good things about Hannigan and Lone Star Trikes they worked with us to make Phil's dream of a trike turn the positive experience we wanted it to be. (Plus they saved me money I did not have to buy the trailer to take the bike to KY and that always makes me happy) My hats off to Hannigan and Lone Star Trikes they ROCK!:thumbsup2:
  10. today just for fun i thought i would check out the dealer in oglesby IL kawasaki dealer i explaned to him my bad knees and the type of bike i now have. i tould him the venture is a little hard for me to get on and off due to hight and my 27 inch inseam and the weight of the bike. he said he understands that. so off we go to his used bikes in the back. he said here take this black bike for a ride. and we will talk. i went hmm okay. so he fired it up and off i went for a 5 mile ride bike was nice to handle had some pretty good power. and i felt good holding it up and doing slow turns on it. the bike was a vulcan i forgot to ask what cc it was. i think he stated a 900. he said when im in the market for one and have the $ he can most likely get me on a good used one for $3000. he said he will look over the venture and give a fair price on it. but being old as it is. it more then likely wont be more then $450 on a $3000 bike kind of a ouch to my pride. so im thinking next spring sell the venture out right then go for the vulcan. dont get me wrong if i had the $ to finish the venture mostly cosmetic and find a way to handle the big brute i would. i even had the thought of finding a trike kit for the venture but at $1500 used im not sure i want to go that way. im sure i will be accepted here no matter what i ride. but spring is still a long ways away. but i have come to the pint that i know my knees are just not what they should be for the venture. so a cruiser with saddle bags might be the way to go?
  11. I am so p!$$ed off. I have a 07 RSV. At 11,000 km's (6800 miles) I had to get the rear shock changed because it started to leak. Still under warranty and at 34,000km (21,000 miles) it is shot again. Dealer contacted Yamaha for a replacement and they were told no way, not going to happen. Yamaha Canada told dealer that it is my fault that there is no way I should need another shock and if it is leaking, it is something I am doing. Dealer said Yamaha told him maybe I run tires underinflated. Well I don't, I always check my air pressure and besides, even if that were true, I don't think that would ruin a shock. So in other words, what Yamaha is saying is, it is impossible that they replaced the first shock with a possible defective one. Now, I know you only have my word on this..... I am 190lbs and rarely, my wife will ride on the back. She is 110lbs. I do not travel on rough roads and don't abuse my bike. The shock is over $600.00 plus labor to install it. How can a company offer a 5 year warranty if they can so easily get out of it? I am calling Yamaha Canada customer service tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to say, what to do about this, where I can turn to for help. There is no way I am going to bite the bullet for this. You can't tell me that they can say with 100% certainty that the replacement shock they put in was 100% perfect. HELP, please with your suggestions, comments. Help me arm myself for the attack on Yamaha Canada tomorrow. Thank you. Greg
  12. Some of the best ideas seem to pop up during casual conversations. This one, raised between the salt-shot-and lime is no exception. More often than not when talking about service received from a dealership it is to complain about the quality of service, the cost of the service or the lack of service. However, every now and then, someone takes the effort to identify a dealer who goes out of their way to provide exceptional service. It was suggested that whenever such a dealer is identified that a thank you letter be sent to the dealer from the Venture Riders thanking them for their service to one of our members. Letters of compliment mean a lot to dealerships, the service managers, and the respecive technicians. So, whenever anyone has an exceptional experience with a dealership or any other service provider, if they will send me a PM providing the name/address of the dealership, the names of the parties involved, and the date of the service, I will generate a letter from the Venture Riders thanking them for the service provided to one of our members. And if memory serves me correctly, this was suggested by Erv and Teri (Pakidaho) somewhere between the home brewed beer and the Taquila...
  13. Sad day in many ways, I dropped the Venture off at the dealer today as a trade in on the new Yamaha Super Tenere due in in a week or so. I am ready to do a little adventure riding before I get to old . A trip to Alaska is on my bucket list as well. The Venture was an awesome bike that did everything I wanted it to do, took me from Dallas to NY State, Blue Ridge Parkway, Dragon's Tail, Custer S.D. and surrounding states more than once, a trip following the Mississippi River, and much more. Always had it serviced at the dealer and never had a single warranty issue in 6 years. Anyone interested will find it at Stadium Yamaha in Irving, TX. Fastest color, Quicksilver, 40k miles, new tires, new battery, just serviced. I cleaned it all up and rode it in and almost couldn't drop it off, it rode as good as the first time I took delivery. I big thanks to all those on this board that go out of their way to help others with advice and photo's of installs, etc. It's been a great ride. I am just glad that Yamaha made my next bike so that I didn't have to go to BWM. See you down the road! Tim
  14. I recently bought a pretty good shape '84 VR that was running fairly rough.. The Yamaha dealer got it running pretty darned good. Among other things, they also changed the fork seals due to oil weeping. When I got it home though, there was fork oil all over the place. The dealer said they had put three seals in that fork and had finally hoped it would hold. Obviously not. He said there must be someting in the fork pinching the seal and the fork will need to be replaced. Also said the forks are not available any more. Been looking on EBay, but not sure how trustworthy those forks are. First, does this multi-failure with seals sound right to you guys? Secondly, anyone out there have an appropriate model, good condition fork that they would consider selling? (Bummer that, on top of everything else, the new beakes are probably now needing replaced due to the fork oil...) Thanks in advance for your input all...
  15. Ok like others I have found that the bolts were left out of the metal strip at the top on the fairing. I did what I thought was the right thing. I took it to the dealer. Days later the dealer put bolts in the strip and told me the repair was good. They completely ignored the fact that the ends were broken loose at the well nuts. After several calls explaining to the dealer how the bike they sell was put together they finally see what the problem is. They claim the inner support is bent and that the bike must have been wrecked and that's why the bolts weren't there. So they are claiming no warranty on any of these parts. I called the Yamaha number? (800-962-7926) The lady said she called the dealer and said if the dealer said it's not something Yamaha would cover than it isn't...end of story. I'm beyond upset. I shopped long and hard to find a bike with 1089 miles on it and warranty so I wouldn't have this sort of problem. Anyone have any help or advice? Frank
  16. Not to pick on PartShark, but shop around and don't assume online parts are cheaper than getting them from the dealer. Had to get a new rubber band holder for the bottom of the sidecover. PartShark lists for $12.38 plus shipping. Dealer price delivered for pickup $10.70. I was pleasantly surprised and thought I would share my amazing find.
  17. My good friend ordered the new E3s for his 09 Ultra Classic. The dealer won't balance them since they require 3.7 oz of weights. He called Jake Wilson and they will take them back and send a replacement set and no cost. It appears that the new tire for the HD line has had some problems. The dealer said that not only are they way out of balance but the front one is out of round. Just passing it on.
  18. Just curious...mostly from people that have had this done at the dealer (stealer). They also changed out a back tire at the same time... So what is a customary charge at a DEALER for this service? I'm only interested in what was charged for the swing arm bearing lube. Thanks.
  19. we have a new dealer in the area, off I64 Farmers exit near Morehead Ky. seem to be a good place with reliable people running it, a nice supply of street bikes and 4 wheelers and a well stocked parts dept. I'll give them a try as i would like to keep them around :cool10: caverun motorsports
  20. I recently pulled the chrome trim off the fairing and found that the plastic around 4 of the 6 windshield mounting holes was cracked completely through. I emailed my dealer photos and he said to bring it in and they'll replace the fairing and anything else related to the problem. Off to the dealer tomorrow. Anyone else had this problem? Dennis

    Exhaust Tips for RSV

    http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/accessories/images/STR-1D693-50-01_t.jpg This is a picture of the exhaust tips that Yamaha sells for the RSTD. I looked at a set at the dealer today for my RSV. They fit into the end of the exhaust okay but not sure how they attach. Each tip has 4 inside holes (non-threaded) and come with screws but either these were the wrong screws or the RSTD exhaust is different than the RSV because there is nothing in the end of the RSV exhaust for the tip to attach to. The dealer was unable to come up with any solution. Anyone had experience with these on the RSV?
  22. When I got home there was a letter from Yamaha Canada saying that they had a gift for me. Because I bought a Venture they had sent my dealer an iPod shuffle, 12V charger and audio cable for me to connect it in to the on-board stereo. Nice of them. One problem - I bought an RSTD, not a Venture. I dropped by the dealer with the letter to explain the error so they could return the iPod. Dealer said "Nope. Head office said to give it to you, here you go." So I'm sitting at home that night with a beer in one hand and the TV remote in the other, and my eye falls on the iPod sitting next to my helmet. The germ of an idea begins to form. 20 minutes and some duct tape later and this the result: (best part is - no cassette player lol)
  23. No, I'm not kidding. They played fair on the price negotiation. When the time came for first service they got it in at the appointment time, and out when they promised, for a fair price. Over the last few days I'd been hearing a ticking in the rear that sounded a lot like what has been described here as the 'spline problem'. Drove by the dealer, spoke to the service guy, who called a technician out to listen. The kid (Highly Qualified Yamaha Trained Technician) (I'm 51 - everyone looks like a kid) listened for a minute and said "Yup. I know what that is." Went in and got a copy of the bulletin describing it and the fix. Explained the problem in detail, and what he would do to remedy it. Assured me that driving it wouldn't damage the machine in the short term, but I should make an appointment to get it seen to. Went back around to the service desk. While I was bringing my bike back to the parking lot the kid (Technician) had gone out and briefed the service writer. when I got back to the service desk my apointment was all written up. We agreed on a day to get it in and I was promised 'first in first out' if I'd like to wait on the day. Did I mention I like my dealer?
  24. Dang! I hate going to the dealer. Took my rear wheel to the dealer to mount a new tire. Went to put the wheel on today only to find out the hub is missing the bearing collar. Dang! I hate going to the dealer. Also noticed a bunch of new weights, 8 of them on the rim to balance the new tire. Hummm... don't suppose they tried to balance the tire without the bearing collar do you? Dang! I hate going to the dealer. The collar is only like $9.00 but I have a 4 day ride planned and I doubt I can get one in time for the ride. Of course the dealer is closed Monday, don't suppose they are smart enough to find it on the floor and say ooops we forgot someones bearing collar. Dang! I hate going to the dealer. Or do they just trash all the "missing parts" left on the shop floor. Dang! I hate going to the dealer, you just can't trust them to do anything right. The reason I brought just the wheel was so I could grease my own splines and NOT strip out my mufflers nor saddlebag bolts like they did the last time. Dang! I hate going to the dealer.
  25. A couple of weeks back, I had the water pump inner seal leaking oil into the cooling system (2008 RSV). No problem...took it to the dealer, and they warrantied the entire repair. The tech told me that he flushed the entire cooling system twice. Thanked them kindly, and rode home (approx 50 miles). I got home and pulled the side panel off to insure the dealer did a good job flushing the cooling system....as I suspected, there appears to be a cream-color sludge in the reservoir. I have used radiator flush in cars to clean and flush a car's cooling system. Should the dealer have used a chemical flush to remove the oil from the cooling system? Seems to me, just filling the cooling system, then draining it (twice) isn't going to remove the oily sludge. Your comments would be greatly appreciated...dealer opens on Tuesday...gonna give them an earful..
