  1. Just bought a 2000 Venture with 24,500 miles on her. I drove the bike from Knoxville,Tn. to Williamsburg,va. about 540 miles and averaged 41 MPG. I like the comfort and "stuff" radio//cruise etc, and the performance etc. The bike had sat for 7 months and I ran 6oz each of seafoam through 2 tanks of gas which helped the low speed idle some but: THE BIKE WILL NOT IDLE OFF OF CHOKE. This gets hairy in traffic or slowing down on a ramp. Actually I am getting pretty good at left hand choke control (manually)--in seriousness this is dangrerous. The stealer says it just needs a fuel service check up which is $320.00 plus parts--thank you very much. I can wrench a little and from the threads I have read so far It sounds like I should do plugs 1st which I would do anyway. The owners manual looks a little vaque. The general condidtion of the bike is good but needs a real goof clean up. Out on the road at 70 she seemed in her element it just doen not want to idle off choke. Any advise would be appreciated. This is my 10th Bike in 6 years I think I found a keeper. ED:thumbsup2:
  2. I have a 2006 RSV with 42,000 miles. Bike is in great shape and only problem I am having is my choke lever no longer stays on its own. I have to hold the lever out until engine is warmed up. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated!
  3. The choke on my 84 works. The bike starts & runs ok BUT the control won't stay on choke. I have to manually hold the contol towards choke until the bike warms up. The previous owner had a tiny bungee on it, but again my neurosis can't accept the bungee there. Is there any way to fix or adjust the twist choke control?
  4. How much travel should the choke lever have. Mine seems to very short travel distance. It is enough to get it going whenbwarm outside but now that it is in the 40s outside I am having to hold a little throttle to keep idle up until the engine is a little warmed up. 5. Well, my poor Venture decided that I had ignored her long enough and won't run properly. Back in spring, my shifter cam had decided that it was time to fail. Since I was short on cash, I parked it and started riding my Maxim. Since I only have space allowed for one bike in the garage, the Venture got the short straw and was left outside under a bike cover. I put Seafoam in the gas and let it run a little. During the summer, I started a few times just to get it running. Finally, a month ago I got the new parts and installed the revised shifter cam in. Problem is, now it only runs with the choke on, and backfires alot. If I try to twist the throttle, it will immediately die. If I play with it as it's dying, I can get it to rev up, and actually get it to move, but as soon as I let off, it dies. I've taken the TCI out, stuck it under a heat lamp for 4 hours (mmmm, toasty) and cleaned the connectors, but still acts the same. I did get my low beam back tho (had been off for a while, bulb is good). It is dim, not full strength, but has done that on occasion since I got it. Don't know if that was related or just coincidence. I've taken the carbs off and cleaned the insides. A couple of the pilot holes appeared to be plugged, now they are all clear. Before I did this, the left front exhaust wouldn't get warm but now all pipes get warm within 1/2 min of idling (with the choke on). The diaphrams have a couple of pinholes, but they had them before and it still ran better than this. I will be replacing them soon. When I turn it on, it sounds like there is a bunch of clicking right by the fuel pump, can't remember if this was normal. Haven't checked on fuel pressure, or the filter, I haven't had much bike time. The bike was running ok before it got parked, not perfectly but still very drivable. I'm open to suggestions, I hope to have it running so I can drive it to it's winter storage area (125 miles away @ my folks place) before the snow flies. Thanks, Andrew
  6. I am trying to do a carb sync on my 93 that I am trying to bring back from the dead. I am using a Carbtune, and can't get a reading on it. I assume that is from lack of vacuum. I can't find any vacuum leaks by spraying carb cleaner around the carb boots, and the carb diaphragms look good to me. The bike only has 18,700 miles on it, so I wouldn't think the valve train would be out of adjustment. I can get the bike to start and run using the choke, and eventually it will idle without the choke, but if you give it throttle, it will die. With the choke on, it will rev up to 5-6k easily without giving it any throttle. I did find out today that number 4 cylinder is not firing, but I didn't think that would make the Carbtune not move. I get spark at #4, but loosened the carb drain screw, and nothing came out. Carbs will have to come off again, I already cleaned them once and they looked good except the idle jet was gummed shut. Obviously this bike sat for most of its life with only 18,700 miles on it, and I'm sure that's where all of my problems are coming from, but it sure looks nice, so I want to get it going. It has a woodgrain dash that appears OEM, I had not seen one of those before. Thanks for any help.
  7. Hi. I traded up from a V-Star 1100 to a used 2006 Venture with 3,200 miles on it. Wow, what a highway cruiser! One small issue is starting the bike. It seems to take a long time to warm up. Starts fine, but has now power for the first few minutes. It also has a chrome cap on the choke button. The linkage seems loose, and the choke will not stay out; pulls itself in when you give it a little throttle. Can this be tightened? Is it usual for a water cooled bike to take a while longer to warm up? I used to be able to start the V-Star and drive away immediately. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, G
  8. A few months ago I posted that I was having carb issues with my 83. With lots of encouragment from you folks and some very good pic's that Dingy supplied I tackled a carb clean. Turns out the worst part of the job was the throtle linkages. I went through each carb one at a time that way I always had three to look at if I had a part left over. Turns out most of my jets were either plugged or partly plugged. She started right up, and almost with no choke. Every thing seemed good on the center stand. I put a license plate and insurance on it yeasterday. Again she started with very minimal choke, and off I went. SHe had a bit of a stumble at around 3 thousand RPM but would work through it to the point of hang on were going some where in a hurry. I dumped some injector cleaner in this morning and again she started with little choke. ( temp's low 50's) I used injector cleaner because I had no sea foam. I went for about a 45 mile ride. She seems to have worked the stumble out and is working great. Thanks for all the help and Dingy for the Pic's. I am going to try to attach a couple of pic;s of the junk that was in the carbs and jets. Tahnks again Frank
  9. I just discovered that the outer end part of one of my Enricher/Choke is broken off. Anyone have a parts carb I could get one from? 89 VR.
  10. This is on my '84...Once it gets warmed up,it wants to bogg/stall out. When I come to a stop and crack the throttle..it'll act like it's out of gas. It always starts back up though. It never does this until I've gone about 20/30 miles. If I keep it reved up,say 1200 plus RPM it won't stall. It almost acts like you've got the choke on???? It just started doing this all of a sudden.I've run about a half can of sea-foam thur it in hopes that would cure it....no luck.I appreciate your help.
  11. Stuck in traffic today going to work. Some idiot decided to park upsdie down on the interstate. anyhow, bike stalled 3 or 4 times while idling. Started right back up, but it was like some one just turned off the key. As long ans I held the throttle crakced a little or pulled the choke a hair, it was fine. Is it just running too lean? Any over heat or lack of good cool intake air issue? Thanks
  12. Hello everyone, I am the proud new owner of a 1983 Yamaha Venture Royale. I bought this bike from a co-worker that had ridden it up until about 10 months ago. It has since been sitting in his garage unused. He says that it was running kind of poor, so he did some 'fiddling around' with the carburetors, and then it wouldn't run at all. That's of course when he stopped riding it. It was no surprise that it would not run for me when I got it home. I decided to give the carburetors an overhaul. I completely dismantled them, soaked them in carb cleaning solution, blew out all the passageways, and replaced all gaskets, o-rings and damaged diaphrams. After re-assembly, I balanced them by sight on the workbench and got them back on the bike. I was relieved when the bike started, but after warming up, repeated attempts to take out the choke fail. It will run just fine with the choke on full up to 2500RPM or so. I read that these bikes don't like to run without the airbox, so I installed that and encounter the same problem. I have tried backing off the choke while very gradually increasing the idle via the idle adjuster, no luck. Any hint of throttle and this thing dies immediately. I know about the seafoam fix, but I would assume that since I thoroughly cleaned the carbs, I shouldn't need to use the stuff. Even if I missed a couple of the passageways I would expect it to run better than this. The only thing that I skimped on were the two rubber plugs at the bottom of each jet block. They were mostly hard, and probably not providing good seals. I couldn't find replacements for these, so I left them as-is. I haven't the slightest idea of why these are there in the first place. Could these be causing my problem? Any other ideas? I am by no means a mechanic, so I could be missing something obvious. Thanks for any help you can provide. -Dave
  13. After 5 months of on again off again tinkering, my 92 finally runs, not well, but it runs. Got the bike from an estate, as a basket case, last year and actually began work on the bike last July after I found a good drive shaft and differential. It had been torn apart in 2003 after the previous owner twisted off the pinion shaft. Got it all put together last summer. Cleaned the carbs - they were pretty bad, put new diaphrams in, lined the gas tank, checked all the wiring connections, scanned a lot of the threads on here regarding getting these older bikes back on the road and performed as many of the items as I could and thought I was ready to put it on the road in August. Tried to start it up, no spark. Back to the forums, rechecked all the wiring, re ohmed the coils and pickup coil, everything tested ok. Everything was pointing to the TCI, got it out from under the battery, opened it up and sprayed everything down with electrical contact cleaner and baked it in the oven for a couple of hours, still nothing, retested the ignition components again, coils and pickup tested ok - must be the TCI; so I ordered the ignitech unit in November. When it arrived it came with the wrong wiring harness for a 93 and they also informed me that it had the wrong program in it. To shorten up this long story, have yet to get the Ignitech program to work. In retesting all the ignition components, the pickup coil did not read out, out of desperation, I was able to find a pickup coil on ebay in February and changed it out. Still no spark with the Ignitech unit, what the heck, plugged the original TCI in and it fired up. It wuld only run with a lot of choke, but hey, it was running. Let it run for 20 minutes or so and shut it down. Came back to it the next day - no spark and the new pickup coil did not ohm at all. Last week found another used pickup coil, ohm'd it when it arrived, tested good. Drained all the fuel that had been in the tank for the past month and refilled with 5gl of gas and a can of Seafoam. Put it in with the original TCI, fired right up - again with a lot of choke. Ignitech still no spark. Let it run for an hour and a half, was slowly able to reduce the choke to about 1/4 to 1/3. but can't take the choke all the way off and if I give it any throttle it dies. tried it again last night, same thing, fired right up with choke, but can't take the choke all the way off and if i give it any throttle at all it dies; so I still have a carb issue to resolve. Just not sure what to look at - more carb cleaning, more Seafoam and let it work it's magic, new parts, float level,...?
  14. My choke level on my 89 VR moves to the left really, really hard. Any suggestions as to what I might spray into the cable. My 1st guess would be WD 40?
  15. Last year my 2nd gen venture started right up as always. Pull choke press start, boom, immediate gratification. As the summer progressed, I would pull the choke press start, grind on starter for 5 seconds, engine starts small delay in gratification. Summer progresses more its now 100+ degree days, no choke press start crack the throttle grind starter 20 seconds engine finally starts. By the end of summer pull choke, press starter, grind on starter till I was ashamed of myself. Wait...............repeat, wait................. repeat finally starts. Then just as I parked it tried to start again......nothing but the ignition switch is on, the speedo does cycle through the checks, theradio controls all function. New fuel filter, fuel pump was replaced but did flow fuel as per the spec sheet. All lights function as they should. I did purchase a new TCI module as I thought that might be the problem and new plug wires. I am getting no spark to any of the spark plugs.
  16. Does anyone know y i must have my choke on to get bike to run if i turn choke off it will stop runing:fingers-crossed-emo
  17. If you are looking for a very inexpensive way to chrome your Choke this could be the answer. They want around 30.00 to 40.00 for a chrome piece that covers the existing choke knob. I wanted to get around that cost so I started to look for a plastic chrome bolt cover that would fit on the existing choke knob. It needed to be 5/8 inch in diameter. They have them at several auto parts stores, napa, petboys, walmart and etc. I then took double sided 3M brand tape and cut a perfect round piece to fit on the back of the plastic chrome cover. I slightly angled the back of the scotch tape that presses on the existing choke knob. This way you can not see any of the tape and only the nice chrome piece. I then pressed it on the existing choke knob. I really like this better than buying the type that you have to connect to the choke knob with screws and etc. Its easy to remove if later you wish to remove it and your right back to stock. It also saves on fuel do to the weight difference!! ha ha :rotf:Hope that this helps someone who is poor like me. Not everyone can affort REAL CHROME!!! DanC:cool10: The tape is 3M two sided tape, not regular scotch tape, needed to carify the tape used, and it will stay forever until you "really" want it off and then it will take some effort!!! If you do need to remove it for some reason I would recommend useing GOO GONE, or GOOF OFF to help remove all the sticky material from the Choke knob,.
  18. hey guys newbie here and first post, i read thru some of the previous posts but didnt find my solution so here goes, just got and 1st 1984 yamaha venture,41k miles, runs like a top,all the carbs were just cleaned and synced, has new plugs also,oh yea and the tank was cleaned while the carbs were off have reciepts for all this work, anyway after it warms up runs great, perfect idle no misses fires up 1st try everytime after warm, but i live in florida so no cold mornings here lol,but every morning i start it up even if im not going out and i have to turn it over a couple times (without choke) then just barely choke it to get it started everytime, and have to warm it up at least 5 minutes before i go,now this isnt the biggest deal in the world but was wondering is it normal? and if not what else is there to check? i mean it runs and idles perfect never a backfire or miss,so im assuming timings good and it just had all that other work, and i put new filter and plugs in myself,so any ideas or should i just live with it? and going to say hi in the welcome section after this but im a 1st time yamaha owner and i luv it,im in st.pete florida, thnx guys for any and all advise
  19. I know there's a few other threads on this but figgured I'd start a new one to get some feedback on what ya'll may have done with your Choke Knob... Here's what I did... Got a "plain jane" drawer knob made of aluminum, cut the threaded extension off and JB welded it to my choke knob. Whatcha'll think and whatcha'll done if'n ya done it???
  20. If we can get down the driveway without slipping on the ice, the hubby and I are going for a ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 46 degrees out right now. Last week 30 below zero! My baby started right up last night, no choke, first time I hit the start button since last fall!!! :dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool: I CAN'T WAIT TILL 4:00!!
  21. I got an email from Sean that he is now offering a new choke knob that matches the key cover that several of us have on our RSVs. I think it looks great and will be ordering one soon. He says that they are not yet on his website so to use the information in this flier if you wish to order one. http://www.venturerider.org/images/starparts.jpg
  22. Desperate need of a choke cable for my 97 RSTD. Any one know where I might find one? None on Ebay. None at Pinnwall salvage.
  23. Greetings from N. GA. I have my carbs put back together after an extensive cleaning and part replacement. It went well for the most part. No left over parts and what not. I have run into a small snag now. They are completely assembled. The choke linkage doesn't seem to be synced with both sides. If I turn the choke like the cable would, the left (cable attachment side) side will actuate the left side chokes first. Then the right side follows. Its about an eight inch off. The only way I see to adjust this would be to bend the choke linkage rod. Which I suppose would be no problem. However, I would like to confirm or deny if I should first. Is it normal for it to activate side before the other? If someone would please take a peek at theirs, I would be most grateful. BTW, sorry to be so long winded with just a small question. Michael
  24. seems like choke does not fully release...idles high and backfires...similar trouble or cure?
  25. Does anyone ever hear of problems starting their Royal Star in cooler weather? I've had this problem for three years now, and it's now starting again. I've put a new battery on, changed the plugs, air filter, brought it to the stealership, nothing helps. It is fine all summer, but as soon as it gets cold at night, I can't start it in the morning. I was thinking maybe something with the choke, but when it finally does fire up it is revving really high, like the choke is working fine. I hooked a lamp onto the engine all night and that seemed to help, but I'd rather solve the problem. This is my favorite time of year to ride and I hate getting stranded at night, fighting the starter. Any ideas?
