Well this weekend I did a very stupid thing, I pushed up on the handle bars on the end to move the bike. In doing this is snapped the Kuryakyn grip on the left side. I tried to super glue it with no success. Kurayakyn doesn't sell just the one grip I found out. Dose anyone have a set they would like to sell? Or, can think of a way to fix the broken one. The Kuryakyn part number is 6235. Thanks for any help. BigD

Someone asked me just how good a VR is and how long will it last? So how many miles do you have on yours? Has anyone broken 100,000 on the odometer?

Hey all as I reported today was the day I picked up the VR down in Fitzgerald Ga. from the govdeals.com auction... I arrived bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning excited about the new ride... Get up leave the motel forget to get gas... thank goodness the Ford didn't mind.. I got to town got gas, picked up some last minute things at the Walmart, and went to meet the Chief of Police and pick up the bike... Met with the Chief ... really nice guy talked a few minutes with the asst. Chief they advised for me to back up to the garage where they held the bike. I backed up and they opened the door and there sat my new ride.. I look across the lot at her in her glory and I see she is got some runs on the lower fairing from the paint job. I thought nahh just seeing stuff from 20 feet away my eyes were playing tricks on me. I move closer see that the runs I saw were indeed runs.. Get even closer see pieces missing, now I am slowing down and looking harder. I move right next to her and she had the left side lower plastic sticking out some. Moved even closer yep plastic was sticking out. Hmm start to look it over more the plastic is missing more where the vent is the vent is broken out. The right side the entire side cover is missing, the front fairing is busted the lower fairing is busted. Where the side cover was missing you could see that the plastic remaining was all broken. Wanting to look at the gas tank to see if it had rust issues I touched the fake tank and it moved. The entire piece was disconnected so I lift it up not disconnected BROKEN. Crap I am thinking reach back to look at the seat to see how bad the connection is broken seat moved. The points the seat connected were broken off and the seat just sat. Apparently the jail convicts had scraped the paint of stating Police and the city name with no regard to the paint. Bike appeared to have been sprayed with a paint can. Side luggage locks would not clamp down on the side covers. Rear luggage scratched all to hell. The tires were decent other then little dryrot. The Class had been disconnected and was not working, the battery is dead which was expected, the stereo was missing button that appeared to have been broken off, the front windshield had some film on it where when I wet my finger I could not wipe it off. Appeared like maybe they used acetone or something to clean it with the last time it was cleaned and then gotten dirty on top of the wipe marks. Chiel saw I was not happy with what I thought I was paying a premium price for on a bike alledged to have 4000 miles on it. The bike I learned from the chief was purchased by the dept in 1991-92 wasn't positive exactly but either way they claim at that time the bike had 2 miles on it. The condition of the bike appeared to have been ridden hard, laided down to rot and then picked up out of the field to be sold. NOT what I felt I was buying. Chief also advised that "when we tried to have the bike fixed at the yamaha shop they were not able to get it running". I told chief I was not expecting a new bike but that at least a bike that needed carbs worked on due to varnish or gumming from a bike alledged to have 4000 miles on it not a bike I was going to have to strip down and rebuild from scratch. He asked me what I would pay for it and I told him honestly... I dont think I want to pay anything for it. He agreed to release me from the sale and not charge me a penalty. This he agreed to since the bike is listed as a 1984 actually is a 1986 and listed as 1100cc and it is a 1300cc. Bottom line Didn't buy it he did tell me he was sorry that I traveled from the Poconos down to pick it up and for it not being what I expected.

I am looking for the trunk rack for my first gen. Mine is good but I want to modify one for a rear setback of about 2 inches. I am watching one on e-bay but don't want to get in a bidding war if it is someone who has a broken one. If anyone has such a critter, let me know if you want to sell it. JB

I went to the doctors yesterday, and he took out the stitches, for the last time!!!! He did more x-rays, and said all looks good, but I have to take it easy for another month. No lifting and such for about a month!! So I am in the end portion of healing:cool10: My Brother in Florida was gonna send me his "broken wing" patch, but he must not be able to find it. I had seen one that I really liked, but it was before the crash. Now I can't find where I had seen it (naturally). So I wanted to know if anyone has seen this patch. Unfortunately the picture is in my mind (yea, something has to be there) It was only about 3 1/2-4" long, had a nice set of feather wings, with only one wing broken, and falling down. I did see a HD one, but dont want that one (for obvious reasons). If you see one will you please let me know! I am looking for a small one to put over my shoulder on my vest. http://www.smokeymountaintrading.com/id67.htm It was similar to this one on page 21 only with one broken wing, and seems it was a lot nicer looking, and not in Harley orange. Thanks to everyone here for all the help and prayers...They must have worked....at least thats what the doctor says!!

Back on 3/4 I picked up a 1srtGen dash panel from a guy on Ebay. VTCustoms/Anthony Alfieri . The dash was discribed as in 'good condition with 14K on the Odo. Here's a copy of an email I sent to the seller after it arrived. The email bounced, and it's the same address that shows in the paypal details for the transaction. Tony, Just wanted to let you know the dash panal arrived OK, however it wasn't anywhere near your discription of 'good condition' that one would have suspected from a bike with only 14K miles on the ODO. One of the mounting posts on back of the shell was broken off and missing and should have been very easily noticed when you removed it from the bike. Probably damaged in the accident. Lots of rust on the electrical connections. Someone was also inside the housing, as a large piece of speedo back light plastic was broken off, and there's no way that broken piece could have gotten out. There was also electricians tape and caulk/sealer in a couple of places on the inside. Bottom line is the dash was not in any condition to be of use as a complete unit. So.... disappointed? Yes, but I'll go ahead and keep the dash and chalk it up to experience. I've owned and worked on over 5 Ventures, and will just rendeer the dash down into parts for the shelf, and toss the broken and rusted stuff. I suggest in the future you be a bit more up front with your discriptions and with the pictures you take. So, I'd suggest that if any member of this board is considering bidding on an auction by VTCustoms to be very carefull. I'm going to resend this email via Ebay and see if it goes through. I've bought a lot of stuff off Ebay and this is the first time I haven't received what I expected...... Just an addition. I fianlly did get a response from the seller via my Ebay message board with his apologies and an offer to return for a refund, but by then I had already taken it apart and bagged it. His email address is still not functioning.

Here are a couple of pics of my pain. At first i thought i might get away with only having to replace the right side fairing, but after closer inspection of the left there was a huge chunk of plastic missing, as well as the mounting tabs. The worst part came after removing all of the broken fairing, noticed that ,i'm not sure what they are called but the whole upper metal cage? is bent and twisted. and in need of replacement as well.

Ok finally got my driving lights mounted today...all this talk about them in another thread got me motivated...(and they look and work great!) but I noticed something...the little plastic mounting holes that the metal bar mounts to, under the windshield, have already cracked and broken off! Son of a %$%^$$&()%#@!!!!!!! I guess it would be repaired under warranty if I nudge the dealer, but that would buy me what...another few thousand miles before it happens again? Ok...so what I may try to do, is make a couple of metal brackets, supports if you will, and brace those mounting tabs down to the bolts that hold the speakers to the fairing..I have done something similar to this before...on my Ultra, something similar happened at around 30,000 miles, the metal braces under the fairing fatigued and broke....so I fabricated some metal braces to provide more support. Hey what can I say? We got some crappy roads in this little town...lots of cobblestone, or brick, type of roads. And they are ROUGH! I had started to hear a bit of a clinking sound in the front when I hit some large bumps with the front tire, but chalked it up to something in the fork tins or maybe the fork deflectors . If you guys start to hear this noise, I'd recommend looking for the cause...it could have eventually broken the center mounting tab, and although the windsheild is not likely to fall out...its still something that is a concern. Maybe someone can fabricate something that addresses this and sell it to the members? Here I was looking forward to 100,000 miles of trouble-free ownership. Dang.

Hey guys & gals, I was taking off my saddlebags today, got the right side off, opened the lid, took off the 4 bolts, no problem. However, left side, I couldn't get the lid open. Somehow, the locking mechanism has broken. Any of you know how to open the lid with the lock broken? I tried just about everything I could without taking a sledge hammer to it. Any suggestions?

When I had the fairing off fixing broken areas I found that the CB/Air ride panel mount system was broken. What I am trying to describe is on the underneath side of the panel there are 6 supports that the mounting screws go thru. These supports were broken or cracked and would not support the panel properly. I went to a local lumber chain store and got a 3/4" dowel rod. I then drilled a hole about 2" deep centered on the end. Then I cut 6 pieces 5/16" long. Now I had 6 individual pieces 5/16" long with a hole thru the center. The 2 that are at the rear of the panel will have to have one side trimmed off because the panel narrows at that end and 3/4" is to wide to fit. Then I used a product called Automotive Amazing Goop which can be bought at Walmart for $3 and change to glue the wood pieces to the underneath side of the panel. Don H.

well, after my bike accident in september one, of the broken parts was the plastic locking mechanism on the radio tray. one of our great members (thanks Bongobob) had a good spare lock assembly with no key. i sat and anylized how i would get the tumbler out and install my tumbler out of the broken assembly. i figured it out and by drilling a small hole in the plastic of the good assembly, inserting a small screwdriver i was able to remove the tumbler and install my bikes original tumbler into the good plastic lock assembly. if anyone needs to know where to drill the one hole, p/m me and i will give you instuctions. cheers, Scott

While riding my bike today I hit something metal on the road and one of the two hoses going into the reed valve broke off. I noticed a sound like air being forced out of the metal tube. Since I have my AIS valve plugged, can I just plug the broken hose also? Or do I have to replace the rubber hose with the L-shaped connector going into the reed valve? Any answer greatly appreciated!!!

I just got a call from Orrin, and he is in the hospital. Fri. night out riding his 05 RSTD with a friend and had to do a fast stop, and it all went bad. He said that his helmet has a big gouge and he's sure that it saved him. He's got a broken collar bone and 3 broken ribs, along with some road rash. He hasn't seen the bike yet. He should be home in a day or two. Steve

Hi guys, My 87 VR is missing the front mute button and the #2 radio station button. All those little rectangular buttons appear to be the same, including the tuner and front and rear remote units. Of course, the buttons are not available separately. Does anyone out there have a broken radio off one of these bikes, that you would be willing to part with so I could try to swap buttons? Thanks, Jeremy

Hey All: Thought I would post so everyone could check their hard bags for a potential problem....While putting on the bag rails I dropped my allen wrench down between the metal plate in the bottom of the bag and the cloth material going down the side....Big hands, so decided to take the bag lid off....There are four screws that hold this plate on...three across the outside edge and one right in the middle of the bag....When I went to loosen the first one along the outside edge I though it was stripped.....On closer inspection I noticed it was broken...These three screws go into molded holes (stud like-raised about 1/2") as opposed to the one in the center of the bracket....On looking further, I discovered that ALL three molded studs were broken...This plate has never been off before....First attempt....I decided that during the install, (factory) they may have been over torqued...Took to the dealer with the three broken studs (with screws)...He just called and Yamaha is replacing the bag under warranty... Thought you might want to remove the foam thing from the bottom sometime and check these...Basically, the only thing holding on the bag lid was the one screw in the middle of this mount and the material support along the bag and lid sides....This happened on the left bag (from drivers position)....Right bag was OK... Did you hear George Clooney was in a motorcycle accident in New Jersey? Evidently, he passed some one the right because they had their left turn signal on, and the cage turned right instead. George had broken ribs and his passenger broke her foot. Hey no politics talk, he is a biker too.

Last night while my black lab was taking my wife & I for a walk, a former boss and current friend of my wife's stopped to give us uninvited advise that anyone over 50 should not be riding a motorcycle. I didn't respond to him cause really, whats the point. I would like to show my wife some of the stats that I have seen here in months past on accidents/fatalities broken down by age &/or experience. I could see that he'd bothered her with his comments. Anybody have that stuff book marked? Tim Lantz Iowa Guy

Jake came home on leave this weekend. Last night he and his girlfriend were traveling home on his bike (just a few miles) and a deer ran out in front of them. They were not able to stop and hit the deer. Jake has +/- 50-60 stitches in his head and will not be able to get back on base before his leave is up. He has been in contact with the Staff at NAS P-Cola. We will take him beck when he is released from the hospital. Loraine and Jake both have quite a bit of road rash. Many sore days ahead for the both of them. No broken bones. I'm Praying for their full recovery and that they go easy on him at the base. Many Blessings so far, They are both breathing and have no broken bones, Thank you Jesus. He called me at 12:59am wanting me to come help him, I called 911 from his phone at 1:05am. Thats pretty good time. I was in bed and had to drive 3 miles. Pict #2 is deer hair sticking out from between the wheel and the tire.

As part of the tear down on looking for the engine rattle, I found an o-ring that was broken and looked like a worm sticking out. I mentioned this in my post and Squeeze was nice enough to post some very interesting information that was taken from a V-Max site, but the 1st gen Venture was mentioned a lot. Mine was just like in the pictures, except mine was not bulged out, but broken. There is a lot of information about the cause of this, such as the design, not warming the bike good before reaching RPM's above 3000 and running oil that is too thick. I have probably done all of this. The link that Squeeze provided is: http://www.angelfire.com/ia/z/vmaxoilring.htm RandyA

I'm fixing up a 200l RSV salvage I picked up on Ebay. The bike was dumped and there was mostly cosmetic damage. I've been using Plastex to fix broken and missing tabs and mending cracks. This stuff works great!

Repairing Broken Windshield Trim Tabs The great things about this forum is the fantastic ideas that we get from each other. This one is so good and so easy that I sure would like to take credit for it but the fact is, the idea came from expanding on a post made by SteveO where he used these type clips to take the slack out of the holes that the tabs actually snap into. His post gave me an idea for repairing the tabs that were actually already broken. The tabs on the back of the plastic chrome windshield trip break very easily. Most people who have ever had the piece off, have broken at least one of them. The following is an easy way to repair them to better than new condition. I had a couple of them broken off and this is so much better and stronger, I actually broke the other two off and did this on all of them. Here is a picture of one of the broken tabs. At most auto parts stores, you will find these clips. They were called "Speed Nuts" at Autozone and I believe these were size 14. It was the smallest ones that they had. Here is what they look like when you take them out of the package. Now...as the top picture shows, there is a center "bar" or "Support" in the center of what is left of the broken tab. In order to slide the "speed nut" over the broken support, you will need to cut the center out of the back of the clip. Also, because the clip is just slightly too wide, you'll have to shave just a bit off each side of the back side of the clip that you just cut the center out of. I used a Dremel tool with a thin cutting disk to do both. Here is what you end up with. Now, simply slide the clip over the broken support and you have a brand new clip that fits right into the slot where it should. It fits pretty tight but just to be sure, I filled the grooves with two part epoxy. They aren't going anywhere.
