  1. I had the same issue with my 87. What it ended up being is the cable that runs from the Vacume pump to the throttle cable junction was so rusty and dirty that it would not actuate. I used some silcolene cable lube and a lube tool on the cable and now it works great every time:) I hope yours is the same, it sure sounds like this will do the trick for you. Good luck
  2. Tim, Would it help if I sent you a 86 + head light assembly to work on? I just happen to have one laying around. Send me your adress if you think it would help. I will cover shipping for the cause. Kurt827
  3. I recently purchased a 87 VR. The PO of this bike addecd a cig lighter, which runs directly to the battery. While this wire is hooked up the memory light on the radio stays lit, along with a small red light on the radio, when disconnected they go out, Yes this is all while the key is in the off position. I am not sure what one has to do with the other, hopefully someone here can help. Thanks in advance. Kurt
  4. Well, I finally made the plunge and bought a odyssey pc680 battery for the venture. Everything seems to be fine except, there is a lot of extra room in the battery box now. I did not get the one with the metal jacket so I don't know if that is the diffrents or if I got the wrong battery entirely. If anyone who has made the switch can let me know if this is normal or not it would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards Kurt
  5. Hey RandyA, It was actually the left caliper that locked up. Some one told me that it could have something to do with the anti dives, I don't think they have anything to do with this type of situation though. Yes I feel quite lucky to have hung on, must have been all of those years of racing motocross. ddoggma, Good idea to ride around the house for a bit before flying down the highway! I think I will adopt that theory after doing any type of work from now on.
  6. I took the new to me 87 venture out for the second time today. The first time I took it out I knew that the brakes were less than adequate. So after cleaning everything up, took her out again. I was cruising along at about 70mph,gave the brakes a quick test and they felt much better. All of a sudden the front wheel locked up, violently skidding from one side of the road to the other I somehow managed to hold onto it and get her pulled to the side of the road where I had to then call a buddy and get it trailered home. What in the he@#! do you guys think could have caused this? Now I am a little gun shy to take it back out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Well, After looking everywhere for a good way to mount a set of passing lamps on my first gens this is what I came up with. While in the garage looking at my wifes gs 650g , I noticed that the windshied brackets might just work for this project. You know, the kind for the universal mount type shields. I guess I was actually onto something this time. They look great and are very adjustable, up, down in out and side to side. I hope this helps someone elce, any questions let me know if i can help. Best regards. Kurt
  8. Hey Count, Last season My Wife and I picked up a set of Scala rider Q2 series blue tooth head sets. All I can Say is Wow! These things are something. Some of the features are as follows, You are able to talk to up to three other riders with same set up, The blue tooth for cell , is 3way calling capable. Crystal clear fm stereo. While using the cell, the person I was having the conversation with, in every instance was unable to tell that I was on the bike even at 75 mph!!! Intercom feature, My wife on her bike and me on mine, we were able to separate up to one mile and could still hear each other without any interfearance, not that this ever happens, just wanted to see. Downside, The price at first we thougt was a little high at 229 per helmet, until we used them. I would highly reccomend these to anyone. Oh I almost forgot the batteries on these things last 9 hours while in use and 15 hours on stand by. I hope this answers some of your questions. Best regards. Kurt
  9. Ok you guys twisted my arm I think I will keep them both:mo money: Mike, as far as the edge protectors on the fairings go they were already on the bikes wen I got them. I have been toying with the idea of making some however.
  10. Hello all, First off I just wanted to say that I hope everyone had a great christmas and a wonderful new year. I have not posted here in a while as I have been dealing with some health issues, which I think for the moment have passed. On another note I got rid of my last remaining motox bike, traded it off for a 87 venture royale with all the goodies. Now I have to decide which one to keep,I also have a white 88. As some of you may recall last winter I made a bad judgment call and took the 88 out for a joy ride in the beginning of february, nothing wrong with that unless you live in wisconsin and it's 10 below. I got the 88 back to running cond. however it still needs some work. top trunk lid, a good right side fairing, head light bezel, other minor plastic repair and paint. The new to me 87 needs a air ride controller and holder, and a few other very minor details. the po gave me reciepts with the bike totaling 1500.00 that he just stuuck into it this last spring. Which include all new carb slides and diaphragms, carb sync, valve adjustment, valve cover gaskets and seals, clutch, Tci and other misc. however this bike has 80000 miles on it wher as the 88 has just under 30000. also I really like the look of the 88. well that is about it for now just wanted to say hey and that I missed you all Kurt
  11. On my 88 I actually bought a whole new controller from yamaha and come to find out it was not the controller at all. 546.00 later it ended up being the harness that plugs into the unit. What I had to do is crimp each small butt conector tighter together as to get a better conection. Hope this helps
  12. Here are a couple of pics of my pain. At first i thought i might get away with only having to replace the right side fairing, but after closer inspection of the left there was a huge chunk of plastic missing, as well as the mounting tabs. The worst part came after removing all of the broken fairing, noticed that ,i'm not sure what they are called but the whole upper metal cage? is bent and twisted. and in need of replacement as well.
  13. Hello everyone, Sorry i have not posted for a while, did'nt know it was possible to ache from so many diffrent body parts at the same time:( I do want to thank all of you for the kind words and encouragement,it truly helps a lot. Hang in there for pics as i am trying to figure out the new program on our computer. Maybe pictures will assist in letting you know what parts i need. I finally was able to get out to the garage and look at my poor baby. After fighting back the tears for a bit,and thinking this is horrible, the bike was about as lucky as I. From what i can tell by looking at her, most of the dammage appears to be plastic, which is bad enough. I am not sure what type of set up holds the fairing together but looking at the front of the bike it appears to be bent out of allignment. Also the cb is junk, i thought that the class computer was as well, after further inspection it seems like it will be ok. Parts that i will need for sure though (1) RIGHT FAIRING UPPER AND LOWER, DUCTING AND LOUVERS (2) LEFT FAIRING UPPER AND LOWER (3) RIGHT SIDE MIRROR AND ASSEMBLY (4) TRUNK LID ONLY (5) COMPLETE RIGHT SADDLE BAG (6) CRASH BARS RIGHT (7) CB UNIT This is what i have for now, i may likely find more but this will be more than enough to keep a gimp and his son busy for a while. Only people like us that enjoy the open road and the freedom that these wonderful machines bring can understand how much it would mean to me and my wife if you could help us to get the old girl back on the road again. Again thank all of you so very much for everything :bighug:KURT827
  14. well i come to you with a very heavy heart this morning. Last night at around 6:00pm i was traveling west bound on hwy 11 towards Delavan Wi. As i rounded a blind corner at approximatly 50 mph not 50 ft. in front of me there was a disabled vehicle with many spectators in the middle of the road. No time to react and ice covered road shoulders, about the only thing i could do was try to execute a controled slide to not hit anyone or anything. As i hit the hard cold ground it seems only to apparent that this is not going to end well. As i slide across the pavement for what seems like an eternity my only thoughts are of my poor beloved first gen that i had spent every spare moment perfecting. The bike and i finally come to a stop and now everyones focus turns to me, worried only about my bike i tell everyone i am ok. As i go to pick up the bike i realize maybe i am not doing so well as my shoulder lets out a loud pop, still not willing to let the bike lay in it's current state i ask for help getting it on the stand. By now the pain is really starting to set in, i call a friend who brought a flat bed for the bike. for me it was a nice ambulance ride to Mercy hospital. I got out of the hospital this morning around 6:00. As you can see by my writing this my thoughts are still of my bike. Oh ya by the way i have a broken collar bone and a dis-located hip, amazing what addrenaline will do for ya. As far as the bike goes upon meager inspection, the right side fairing is gone, windshield, rivco air horns, lower fairing, mirror,cb,,class, brake lever, trunk lid only, right saddle bag complete, i'm sure there will be more. I will get my son to get some pics up for you asap. The worse part about this is it is so hard to get good quality parts for these bikes now, i will heal but my bike? Also it was running great finally and was so beautiful. Thanks for listening. kurt827.
  15. Thanks Brian; I do have a control unit on the vest and gloves. Everyone i have talked to seems to agree that when idling is where these bikes have charging issues. call me stupid but when you say i can put a ammeter inline, is this something that a bike shop would have ? also does it stay connected to the bike? I am allright as far as most of this stuff goes, however i know absolutly nothing about electrical system.
