  1. I know from real world experiance that the 2nd Gens have a much too touchy rear brake. Or at least in the two that I have owned. I plan to install the TCB Lifesaver Valve and I'm not sure which level of slip I need. I thinking either the 30-40 green or the 40-50 red. Anyone have one already mounted and can post results?
  2. It as a nice warn, sunny afternoon on Novervember 1st when I started down a long, winding hill running about 25 mph. Suddenly, I realize some big dude is standing over me asking me what day it is. I finally gather enough strength to tell him to go ask sombody that cares. I just wanted to sleep for a bit longer. It seems that as I was going down the hill using my rear brake to slow me, I hit a bump in the road that made me mash my rear brake pedal more than gently. This started a slide that I did not recover from. The bike "highsided" and threw me over the guard rail to land on a steep bank on my back. The bike went over on it's right side, slid backwards for about 20 ft the came to a rest next to the guard rail. It felt strange to wake up, look at the bike, and realize it was going the wrong direction and was on the wrong side to have been making the turn I was making. Fortunately. the damage to me was minor. I can thank My Lord and the riding gear and helmet for protecting me. Other than a mild concussion and a very sore and bruised back I am OK. The bike on the other hand did not fare well. I was surprised at the small amount of damage that turned into a $7,800 (US) estimate. Because this is over 75% of the listed value of the bike, the insurance company is going to total it. I was offered what I thought was a very fair settlement and I could keep the bike. So this is what I plan on doing. The majority of the parts I will clean up and continue to use since they are only minor scratches on them. But there are a couple of major parts that i would like to replace with new ones. I will list these in another thread to see you anyone has some stock parts that they would like to get rid of. I know everyone in here shares a bit of the pain when a Venture Rider goes down so I want to thank each of you in advance for your prayers and "Get Well Wishes". From the deepest reaches of my heart, THANK YOU to each and every one of you.
  3. :detective:I am following up on the thread I started a week ago and here are the results I promised to report. 13 rear brake lock ups were reported, 12 of those were due to emergency stops, and 4 of those 12 reulted in an accident and the bike going down. That is a 33% probability of crashing when using the rear brake in an emergency. That to me is pretty alarming. Almost all of the riders that locked up their rear brake felt that it was way too easy to lock up. One person brought up the point that the harder you stop, your right foot will press more on the rear brake due to the G forces generated in severe braking and weight transfer that takes place from rear to front. You have two forces working against you. 1. you moving forward on the bike, pressing on the rear pedal more and 2. weight coming off of the rear wheel. My opinion is that it is a freaking miracle more of us don't crash when making an emergency stop, even when using the front and rear brakes properly. I suspect that this problem is not unique to just the Royal Star series of bikes. I suspect that with HD making ABS avaiable as an option more manufacturers will be under more pressure to improve the brakes on our motorcycles. I certainly hope this will be the case.
  4. I changed by brake pads yesterday (front & rear) Man what a pain getting the front ones back in. They kept falling out of the caliper while trying to get them back on the rotors. But I got it after awhile. Now on to my question: Out of the gate I did 15 mph and applied both brakes with little force until stopped. I did this 3 time then increased my speed to 20, 25, 30 then 40 applying the brakes with little force 3 times. I didn't do any practice panic stops with the new pads yet. I noticed that the front brakes grab and then seams to skip then grabs again then skips. This makes the front of the bike jerk so you end up getting a jerky stop. I checked the brake fluid level after changing the pads and both the front and rear reservoirs were full. I didn't have this problem before changing the pads. The old front pads were not that bad in the first place (about half gone) but I changed them because I was changing the rear anyway and figured why not. The back inner pad was down to nothing. Everyone knows that pad wears much faster then any other. So why are the front pads acting strange? Thanks for the help on this one.
  5. I want to do a survey of who has had problems with thier rear brakes locking up in an emergency situation. What happened, injury, accident or death. How do you know what happened? Did you find your rear brake difficult to modulate? Was the front brake used also? What is you normal stopping proceedure. Have you practiced emergeny stops? Please add any relevant information you think would be valuable. Please be brief this is just a survey. I am going to try to keep this thread for a week and then let you all know the results. Not looking for solutions. Thank you.
  6. I've seen a number of people report uneven rear brake pad wear. I bought my '05 RSV used and it passed state inspection only 2500 miles ago, so I wasn't expecting any brake issues for a while. I was dismayed when I started hearing grinding in the rear brakes. When I checked the pads, the inner was down to metal and the outer had 3/8" left. It seems that the caliper is sticking. Has anyone got Yamaha to cover the caliper and/or rotor under warranty? The bike has about 17k miles on it. The rotor is only slightly scratched, should I replace it? Thanks for any info. Jake
  7. Reading the headlight modulator discussion has got me to thinkin. A lot of wrecks happen as a result of improper use of the rear brake. Highsides and such, so I'm thinking about removing my rear brake. That way it can't lock up causing me to go sidways and then high side when I stupidly release the brake during the slide. Well what do yall think? Yeah I know, I'm a smarta$$.:rotf::rotf:
  8. I have a problem with the digital diplay showing a problem with the brake fluid level - stays on and red light stays lit - lots of brake fluid - sensor has been tested in behind the headlight - continuity/no continuity as you raise and lower the float - tnx - Jim
  9. Where's a good place to buy the brake pads?
  10. I just want to take a minute to thank 2 of our own here, Frank Andrews and Larry Skeels (Carbon One) I posted up about my rear rotor being destoryed from brake pad failure. Frank was the 1st to respond with "I have one that you can have" send me your address. Larry PM'd me and said during the meanwhile that I was waiting for the one from Frank, that I could use the one off his Midnight as it wasn't going to be used. I went to Larry's and grabbed the rotor and the brake pads that he had. He said to use it as long as I needed it and gave me the pads. Frank had let me know that he shipped the rotor, brake pads and the caliper as he switch his bike to a trike. I offered him money to atleast cover postage, to which he responded no, he was glad to be able to help. Now dont get me wrong here, I am extremely grateful for these gentlemens generosity. But it seems weird that it happened to me. I have done and will continue to do the same thing as they have done. If I have something and dont use it, I gladly will give it to a member in exactly the same way as Larry and Frank have done for me. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you both, it sure puts back faith in the human race when your on the recieving end on of a situation like this. This place is truly a brotherhood and family that never ceases to amaze me....thanks for taking the time to listen
  11. After having gone thru all of the hair pulling and discussion of this particular parts ancestery I finally got the the brake bled!! The problem started out as a simple pad replacement which proceeded to go south at a very rapid rate and ended up in my having to take the caliper off and to the mech to replace the seals which decided that this was the time to give up the ghost. After getting the caliper back and the new pads installed and the caliper mounted, I started to bleed the brake, (right front). Now this is where the hair pulling and dicussing the caliper's ancestery began. I tried the regular way of pumping the brake handle with the bleeder screw closed with no success. Aha, I thought. I will go to the Venture site and do a search to find out how to bleed the brakes. I found and tried the reverse bleeding method, again with no success. Now this was beginning to take on all of the aspects of a 3 ring circus! So, I thought why not try the reverse bleeding method again but with a minor modification. Instead of filling a bottle and holding it up like a IV bottle, why not use a 60cc syringe which I had in my tool box. Btw, my daughter is a nurse at a local hospital and she got me a couple of these. If you are a nurse or know one, get a couple of these and keep in your tool box, they are handy as a third hand. But I digress. It worked GREAT!!!! This way you can use pressure to reverse bleed and it only took about 20 minutes to fully complete the job and have a good hard brake handle. Don H.
  12. I have had my 86 Venture Royale checked over by the dealer and no safety problems have been found but the icon on my display indicating low brake fluid is either on solid or flashing most of the time. Is it really caused by low brake fluid? If so, how much fluid should I have in the reservoir? Perhaps there is a level sensor problem. Has anyone else experienced the same thing? If so how did you resolve the problem. The light is quite annoying at night.
  13. Greetings, I'm looking for some feedback on what is "normal" front brake performance for a Gen1. My issue is that the handle has what I would describe as "excessive" travel and the brakes just don't seam to bit very well. The handle does not have excessive free play and I can feel the brakes start to engage as I would expect but they take a lot of handle travel and pressure to get it stopped, even at slower speeds. I have completely rebuilt the hydraulics (no pitting in the bores noted, just hard seals etc) but am still not satisfied with the performance. The system has been bleed several times manually and with an air powered vacuum bleeder so I'm confident it is not air in the system. I did not replace the pads as they appeared to be new but do not know what brand/type they are. As a former Mercedes/BMW cage tech (till my hands gave out) I'm confident that the work was done correctly. I realize that the front brake only operates the one caliper but still I expected more. My last big bike was an 03 BMW GS 1150 Adv and my current other bike is an 82 SECA 400 so I realize that I'm comparing apples and oranges but it just doesn't feel right. I've never ridden any other Ventures but have several Gold Barges and they were much better then mine. I've searched around the forum but have not been able to find anything related to what I'm experiencing. Is it possible that the hoses are swelling and causing the soft handle and poor performance? Can the "anti-dive" actuator be affecting it? Does anyone have experience with the steel braided lines on a Gen1? The only place I've found them they want almost $400 for a full set and I'm not ready to "invest" that much in this bike (yet). My "gut" is telling me it is the hoses and pads but want others feed back before I throw any parts at it. Sorry this is so long but wanted to get as much information captured as possible. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bill Colbert,WA
  14. anybody know what the ebc part # for a 86 front a rear brake pads ?
  15. If you order one of these inspect it very carefully when it arrives. If you are using it as running and brake lights, there should be three (one on each end and in the middle) that light as running lights. There are eight, four on each side that come on as brake lights. I was installing mine today and found out that the eight were never installed on the light board.
  16. I had been looking at several LED lights to replace the stock reflector between the license plate and tail light. Most of what I found was in the area of $25 and $40. I thought that was a bit much. Well, yesterday, I was at Bass Pro Shops and found what I was looking for in the area of the boat trailer supply area. It is an LED clearance/marker light about 1/2 inch shorter than the reflector. I had to elongate the holes in the reflector mounting bracket to get it installed but it took about 10 minutes total to do the whole thing. I wired it into the brake light so it only comes on when the brake is activated. The best part was it only cost $9.99!!
  17. I have a brake fluid leak that I am having trouble stopping. The fluid is coming from between the front caliper halves on the upper side when mounted on the bike. I have been unable to find replacemnt seals for the two bolts that hold the two caliper halves togeather. If you look at the picture you can see the area I am talking about. This is the right side caliper that is NOT part of the unified braking system I no one has ideas does anyone have a caliper for sale for an 83’. Thanks Steve
  18. Has anyone here installed the Baron's Lowering Kit and wants to part with the stock rear brake caliper mounting bracket? I "un-lowered" my '06 RSV by swapping out the Baron's links with Diamond R leveling links, but the previous owner did not have the stock brake caliper bracket (or stock links). I'm looking to buy the stock rear brake caliper mounting bracket, if yours is just sitting on the shelf in yoru garage let me know before I go buy a new one.
  19. I installed the Harley light fixture to my Venture yesterday and it works great and looks great. But my main brake light does not work now. I checked the bulb and it looks ok and I checked the wiring and every thing is wired correctly. I’m going to get a new bulb later today, but was wondering if anyone has any idea’s. Thanks, Everette
  20. I ordered a headlight modulator and brake flasher from http://www.comagination.com/modYamaha.htm today. The flasher is the "Brake Flasher (IBF4) with about 4 FLASHES/3 seconds and then stays steady ON until brake is released". I'm trying to decide which lights I want to hook it up to. I have an LED light bar under my trunk and I also have a tail light converter for my cooler rack or for towing a trailer. SO... I was thinking that I would only have the LED lights flash on the bike. I'm also thinking that I should have the trailer brake lights flash even though they are combined with the turnsignals. Does anyone have the combined Stop/Turn Signals and have them set up to flash? Thanks
  21. So I stepped outside at work today to have a smoke. I noticed fluid puddled around my front tire and automatically thought, Brake fluid. DANG!!! I stooped down and started looking; but coulden't see where it was coming from. It was on the wheel and both sides of the tire. I started to run my finger through it for a "texture feel" test. I have even been known to do a "taste" test. But, at the last second before touching the "fluid" Something in the back of my mind told me to stop. Then it came to me. One of our truck drivers had arrived a few minutes before, and Jake, his little male dog was running loose on the property. I checked the brake feel of the hand and the foot brake for confirmation and they worked well without any further "leakage". Sure am glad i didn't try that "taste" test ! !
  22. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to turn off this thing? I've got new pads front and rear, new rear rotor, new prestone 3 fluid, no air, lots of brake power. I still cant get the light to go out.Although it doesnt really bother me, I would rather the thing come on and tell me if there was a real problem.
  23. I bled the brakes and clutch on on my 84 VR today and took the bike out for a test drive. The right front brake was not working so, I stopped and had a look. I saw that the brake disk was covered in what I think is fork oil. It looks to me like the line that seems to link the brake to the anti dive module has sprung a bit of a leak. This means that my brake pads are shot but, I will also have to replace the faulty line. I have never worked on this area before. I think it going to involve draining the oilf from the forks and draining the brake fluid for the right front brake. Then, there is the clean up of the disk: What is the best thing to clean that with? Also, I have tried to get the dust cover off of the caliper so I can inspect the pads but was not able to get it to budge without damaging it. What is the trick to getting that plastic cover off? Or, am I into something here that I should leave to a qualified mechanic?
  24. Dash computer is shot! Does anybody know how to completely bypass the dash computer. I have bypassed the headlight and the taillight but I can't figure out the brake lights. I jumped the pin connector for the head light and tail light but I am having trouble finding the right combination for a brake light jump across the connector. Any help would be appreciated and would get me back on the road. Thanks, Derek
  25. Just wondering if anyone has a rear brake pedal laying around that would fit a 99 Venture. It does not matter if the arm is bent some. I would like to experiment with adding to the pedal to make it a little longer. Thanks. I'm going to check ebay as well. Spotsy
