VR Assistance

  1. What do I need to get to have my rear turn signals to light up when I brake. Any assistance will be appreciated.
  2. Ok guys, I recently got an 87 Venture Royale (merry christmas me!) from my wife. (what a keeper!) i've refreshed old bikes before, but not a full dresser like this one. I have a list in mind of things to check/clean/replace but i would like your input as well, since, well, obviously you guys are alot more familar with these old gals than me! so far on the list: new cables all around New fluids all around New Brake Pads Rebuild/Replace all the seals in the brake calipers Master and Slave rebuilds for the brakes Rebuild for the clutch master New Tires Inspect, dielectric grease and general cleaning of all electronics, and fuse box Tank inspection Petcock inspection Air filter clean/replace Carb clean/rebuild Carb Sync anything specific to these girls i should know about besides this? Thanks in Advance! - Jared
  3. You know, I always wonder what the other people look like, who I chat with on this forum. So, this is Me. Brake Pad Tall & Silver Hair Late 40's I can't find a picture of just me
  4. I bought a 1988 Venture that had been sitting for more than 3 years. The clutch did not work at all so I thought that since it had no fluid in it maybe it just needed fluid and bleeding (who was I kidding). I tried and tried to bleed it with no luck. I bought a rebuild kit for the master and slave and also a Harbor Freight bleeder. Rebuilt the master first and tried the HF bleeder without rebuilding the slave. Bleeder worked great and had a little clutch action but looked under the bike and had a flood of brake fluid there. I took out the slave and rebuilt it (thanks for all the posts that said it did come out) did the bleeder thing and it worked great. Had clutch! The front brake worked some but not good. I did the HF bleeder on it and it worked fine then. The rear brake did not work at all. Tried the old method of bleeding and had no luck. Did the HF bleeder on the front left then on rear then on fitting at steering head and went through front rear and head again. Got a full brake. The HF bleeder worked great it was on sale for $20 and it could of been the best $20 I ever spent. One other thing that is nice using the bleeder is that I need no one else to help me. The only other thing I did was to put a turn of Teflon tape around each bleeder screw so that air woud not leak while bleeding. Hope to get everything done so I can go to Maintance Day.
  5. I have an 85 Venture Royale I am having trouble with the rear brake. The calipers seem to be fine, but no matter how many times I pump the brake pedal I can get a hard pedal and the brakes to work. I have bleed the brakes thoroughly, but no stiff pedal or breaks. Don't see any leaks. Would this be the rear master cylinder? Thanks for any tips.
  6. OK guys yesterday at some point I lost both rear brake lights on my 04 silverado. I drove the last 300 miles with my daughter tailing me tight with her Subaru just to make it here.I believe I have a wiring problem. The brake fuse is fine, tail light bulbs are fine, and the third brake light that sets high above the rear glass works OK. This tells me the brake light switch is OK.The ground to both rear tail lights is probably OK as the rear turn signals, park lights etc are OK. I'm thinking maybe the master feed line comes into some connection plugs under the frame behind rear bumper. I'll check it out today when it warms up here. I got my volt meter with me just no wiring diagram. Those rear electrical plugs may be corroded.Nothing like plenty to do on vacation.
  7. When using either front or rear brake, my lights dim significantly and I loose about 2-3V on my volt meter, at any engine RPM. Turning my pair of 35W driving lights on or off or plugging in my electric riding gear has no similar effect on the electrical system. No problems charging, starting, battery seems strong, run my electric gloves and vest with no issues. Is this normal for a 1st Gen (maybe antidive actuator)? Or should I look for an excess current draw somewhere? Dual brake lights appear to work, look normal. Thanks Wally
  8. There is an 84 Mk1 Std near my house, has the 2nd gear problem but is really clean ~27K mi and CHEAP. Haven't driven it yet but owner says it runs well, he had it sold but the buyer balked on the test drive when it "had a shifting problem". He said "make me an offer, I want it out of my way" Thinking of buying as a parts store for my 88 but my research says a lot of parts wont fit (but a lot will). Can the Gen 1 experts here confirm or correct my list. Thanks Parts that WILL fit ???? Carbs Clutch basket Starter Stator Regulator/rectifier TCI Fairing plastic header pipes & Collector Misc Electronics components Gas tank Fuel Pump Radiator & Fan Instrument cluster Clutch master & slave Brake master (F&R) Engine (If I fixed 2nd gear) Wheels (minus rotors) Parts that WONT fit ???? 9. I can't seem to find how to convert a LED light bar to become a RUN and BRAKE light. I thought thee was a simple wire connection that you connected to the running lights and brake lights. Anyone know what I'm talking about. BTW, this is for my SUV.
  10. I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the front and rear brake switches and the clutch switch that came off of a 1983 Venture. The switches should be the same for the 1983-1985 models. The switches detailed are from a Venture without cruise control, switches from cruise control equipped bikes are different. Cruise control equipped switches will be similar to the 1986-1993 switches shown in another post. The pictures show the switches completely removed from the bike. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. I have detailed the throttle side switch and the Clutch side switch in other threads. 38771.pdf
  11. Hey Guy's, My brother just bought an 84' and needs a rear brake m/c to get her on the road. Anyone have one for sale? just pm me if so and thanks in advance, Carl
  12. I had my 1996 RSTC up on a stand today while doing a brake job. I turned my back and heard a crash. There was my bike lying on the ground. I was very lucky that the bike has crash bars so there was very little damage. I did damage my brake lever and also bent the bar that the front blinkers mount on. Does anyone have either of these parts lying around that they would be willing to part with? Thanks Bob
  13. I am in the process of installing cruise control on my 1983 Venture Standard. I have purchased almost all of the items I need to do this upgrade from ebay. Prior to installing the parts, I will be disassembling the ones that I can and cleaning them. I have made the following write up of the process of cleaning the front and rear brake switches and the clutch switch that came off of a 1988 Venture. The pictures show the switch completely removed from the bike. The switches detailed are from a Venture with cruise control, switches from non cruise control equipped bikes are different. These switches may be very similar to 1983-1985 Ventures. If you are unable to open the PDF file, PM me with your email address and I will send it to you. I have detailed the throttle side switch and the turn signal switch in other threads. 38049.pdf

  15. As I now have a thumb brake on the bike I am finding that it's a bit of a stretch when holding the clutch in and "thumbing" the brake. I have always had problems with the clutch lever on any bike as the thumb has been broken and doesn't have as much flexability. Question: is there an after-market clutch lever that will come in closer to the handlebars??? Or, one that can be adjusted (like the FJR one)??
  16. Just an up-date on the thumb brake installed on the quike. Quickstep had a devil of a time getting it to bleed and get the pressure up, but finally worked. It worked really well on the ride yesterday (Sunday) and isn't taking me that long to get used to. Sure is crowded on the left handlebar though To Qickstep: thanks Possum
  17. I am trying to bleed the brakes and they are spongy. I understand the rear brake is linked with the front left. I have speed bleeders. If someone can give me specific instructions for bleeding the front hand brake and the integrated brakes I would sure appreciate it. I am not being successful. Thanks for the time.
  18. Quickstep is installing my thumb brake (replacing back brake) and needs a question answered please Which two wires does he tap in to- to get brake light?? (rear):confused24:
  19. Okay, here are pics of the Spiegler thumb brake that Squeeze kindly helped me purchase. Quickstep is putting it on today Gonna have a lot of stuff on the left handlebar! Will post more pics when installed
  20. re SS brake line for Marvins rear brake 10mm banjo not 8mm. :canada:
  21. Hi folks.. I'll soon be installing a new rear disc and pads on my 2006 RSV.. mine is so badly cut into, there is a pronounced lip at the outer edge of the disc that now cuts into the new pads I install. Fun huh Once I have the new disc and HH pads installed, brakes bled and pistons cleaned up, what's the proper way of 'breaking them in'? A fast speed slam the brake on, or a slow long progressive application of the brakes or frequent on off applications? I recall someone telling me about not doing it a certain way to prevent 'glazing' the disc right away, thus defeating the benefit of a new disc.. Any thoughts on this? Hopefully soon I'll be all braided steel lines and the new rear brakes.. Thanks in advance.
  22. Got the new battery in, added some fresh gas, these things dont run real well on a strong fix of Sea Foam, but once I got the gas in and had her fired up she ran just like she did before I took her apart. Still have a few small items to take care of, the main one being the rear brakes.........aint got none, I forgot to replace the brake fluid after I did the brakes......DUH. other than that she is road ready, I put about 10 miles on her, didnt want to take her to far from home just in case, besides I didnt have the new license sticker on it.......... So here are the final pics.
  23. I know this has been asked before, but for the life of me I can't find the right threads & posts. Did the search...no joy! Would anyone be so kind as to recommend a brand of brake pads for my '98 RSTD and a retailer or two where I can get them at the best prices. I don't play canyon racer wannabe or anything like that (not like we actually have canyons around here anyway) and I am generally not hard on brakes at all, so they won't have to be some special race capable part. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have a source or two for rotors, while we're at it, just in case! Thanks in advance...
  24. My front right brake has recently begun to squeal quite loudly when I use it. The pads aren't that old. I can't recall what manufacture they are but they were a quality item recommended by a trustworthy wrench at the time of a tire purchase. The rotor looks ok but I have yet to get a measurement of its thickness. Perhaps tomorrow. Assuming the thickness is ok, I am thinking of swapping inboard and outboard pads one for the other on that side. Suggestions? Thanks, Brian H.
  25. Hi everyone. Just left for a 6k run and I'm I have a bad ground somewhere on the #5 "signal" fuse. This just happened. The first 1k was fine. The bike ran fine and charges fine. With the key on(engine off, the volt meter is way down. Around 9 volts. When I hit the brake, the gauge goes up to normal. With the engine on, the voltmeter stays at the very low voltage and when I hit the brake, the gauge goes up to 13 or so. Usually, the gauge shows 14+ with the motor running. Testing my trailer lights, the fuse blew. With nothing connected, the fuse is hotter than hell.On the bordeline of blowing. What all is attached to the "signal"fuse? What should I start disconnecting? Overall, the lights are fine, cranks strong, runs fine. But this fuse is going to blow and I'm afraid if I take off, I'll burn up the stator cuz something is drawing a lot. Please Help! Thanks!
