  1. 91 Venture Royale, 43,000 miles. When I ride all day in hot weather, the next morning I have a little bit of coolant on my right exhaust just below the water pump. It burns off when I start up and the loss is negligable. Still It bugs me. I thought it was the o-rings in the plastic transfer pipe between the water pump and the thermostat housing. But, today I got down and looked and there is a little hole in the bottom of the water pump and there is a stain, as though coolant has leaked out the hole from time to time. This is the only place that looks like anything has leaked in the past. Anyone have a similar experience? Do I need to fix it?
  2. First Annual Mobile Car and Bike show was held today. Guess what? I won 1st place!!!!! I was the only Yamaha entered in my class and alot of HDs. This is the first time I have ever won a bike show!!!! Go blue Ventures. tew47
  3. I have been waiting an hour for it to load with no luck; and it is not the first time....
  4. well i am finally able to get back on and see how everyone is doing. i had a major computer crash and had to buy a new one so that and several other problems has kept me off the site for a while now. it is good to be back among friends and i hope all are doing well. i do need to say what a good time tina and i had at vogel. sorry we had to leave a little early. a special thanks to lewis and charlene for another fun time had by all. i hope everyone made it home safe. well i have a ton of catching up to do so i am going to get to it. ride safe everyone mike
  5. A drunk driver killed a friend of mine last night while he was out running errands on his bike. Mike was good people, someone you could always count on and the type of guy you just wanted to ride with. Squidly reminds me of Mike and I liked Squidly from the time I met him. When I got the news I was P.O. I have spent the day thinking of all the neat rides we shared. As well as a wedding dance. The last time I saw him was at a Funeral of a friends Dad before moving out here to Vegas and I gave him a big bear hug and said I"m not going to say goodbye just till I see you again and we both got a little misty. Writing this is helping me grieve and it hurts allot because I was wanting to call Mike and tell him what a good friend he is,but put it off cause I will be in Minnesota in a couple weeks and figured I would see him then. So now it looks like I will say till we meet again when I go to his burial site. He loved to ride and loved family and friends and I know there will be allot of both at his funeral. I hate the fact another drunk has taken such a good friend away. So far to date this makes My Dad and 2 good friends someone driving while under the influence has killed. Thanks for listening..............................................Ron
  6. When October 13 Where Weaping Radish Manteo M.C. Time High Noon We had a great time at the last meet and eat at the Radish lets do it again Jeff
  7. We have been thinking of going to Death Valley in October. Would like to do it on the RSV but wondering how the conditions are likely to be that time of year. Does any one have any experience with that area? And particularly around that time of year? Any suggestions?
  8. How many of us complain about cagers cutting us off, turning in front of us, not letting us in, etc? An older biker (gad, I like saying that) gave me some tips and I have been trying to practice them all of the time. Be polite: Make sure others see you so than can avoid you, he told me to wear a white helmet. You know it sticks out like a sore thumb, with a black jacket. Use hand signals: I use them in heavy traffic and get lots of room and more than a few friendly waves. One guy in a pick up truck followed me through traffic just to make sure no one rear ended me, just because I used hand signals (as well as flashers). I know because we both happened to stop for gas at the same time and he told me. Don't flip someone off if they screw up: Others will see it and maybe not so courtious to another biker somewhere down the road. I know that we all know this, just thought I would bring it up again. I do like using the hand signals, it's fun. Let me and otherrs know what tips you have, it can' hurt.
  9. I'm thinking that maybe it's time for another contest. What do you think? Any ideas? As you know, we are a listed club at the New Enough website. http://www.newenough.com/ Not only do they have great products, service and prices but when you buy from them, you have the option during checkout to choose VentureRiders as your club of choice. Every time you do that, they make a small donation into our account there. Over time it does add up a bit and then we can use it for rally prizes, contests, etc. So, it's time for a contest to give away some of the money...most of the money...that we have in our account there. So, how about a $100.00 gift certificate from New Enough for a lucky winner. So....all we have to do is come up with a contest. I've had a few thoughts but am open to your suggestions. What do you think?
  10. I didn't want to wait too long I know lots of folks need to get their dates in for vacations by the beginning of the year. So here it goes: August 6 thru 10th of 2008 will be the date for the Asheville event. That was the date that got the most votes and a few said either was good. I have heard from some that they'd like to go to the Biltmore house I know they have group rates, but you have to call. So this week I'll call and find out what that would be. I know one of our members was involved with a car group that went so I may tap him for help on this. I'm figuring maybe that friday would be the best day for this. I know with all the events it's hard to choose, at least this way you have advanced knowledge on when this will be. I'll post with any other details as time goes on. I'm going to ask the advice of others who have organized events like this. This is the first time I'll be organizing something so big, just hope I can give you all a good time. If you're interested in checking out what's at the Biltmore here's their web address: http://www.biltmore.com/visit/default.asp Margaret
  11. We had frost warnings here last night. Predicted temps in the mid to high 30s. I don't think it got that cold but I'm not even ready to hear those predictions. Just doesn't seem that I've gotten near enough riding in this summer. I pulled the trailer out today and got it washed and waxed and polished the chrome. Then put the cover on it and put it in it's designated winter storage corner of the garage. I'm not done riding for the year but any long trips that would require the trailer are pretty much over with. I tell you folks...there is just WAY to much going on at my house. Seems there is not enough time for Eileen and I to have any time together. I know I've not posted here near as much as I usually do but things are just hectic right now. As you know, Eileen lost her sister a year or so ago due to cancer. It really took a toll on her after being the caregiver for a couple of years. Now her mother is dying of the same thing and she is doing it all over again. She is really having a hard time dealing with it all so please keep her in your prayers. Don
  12. Can you listen to music on the headphones and talk on the cb/intercom all at the same time or do I have to choose between cb, intercom or stereo?
  13. My wife has been complaining this trip about a strong exhaust odor. I'm not sure yet that I've found the problem but this morning V7Goose and I were looking my bike over and found the notorious pinhole exhaust leak at the "Y" where the front and rear header pipes come together. I am only mentioning this because this is the first that he or I have seen this problem on the earlier RSV. I know that many of the '05 and/or '06 models had this issue but not the '99 and other models. I ended up pulling the "Y" off the bike and repaired it with JB weld. Seems to have worked very well. Still not sure if it's the source of the exhaust that is bothering Eileen but we'll know after we've had time time ride a bit more.
  14. In response to my moneypit statement, gearhead asked what I did to stop the clutch from slipping. I guess the easiest is to give ya a rundown step by step. First thing was oem plates, boss, and spring. That helped, but didnt fix it. At the time of install I also cleaned out master cylinder and made sure return hole was clear. Next was a new slave. That helped more, but still didnt fix it. I tried roughing up the metal plates, and adding my old spring in top of the new spring, that helped more but still didnt fix it. At this point I was tired of not fixing it:bang head:. I broke down and ordered a barnette kit for it and a rebuild kit for the master cylinder. Had a hard time getting the thing to take a bleed, but it finally seems right. So, in answer to your question of how did I get it to stop slipping, I guess all this stuff put together( a whole new system except the lines) is what worked. Remember, this bike has 85000 miles on it and sat for quite some time b4 I bought it. At this point I still don't consider myself an expert on the clutch, but I know the one on my 89VR almost intimately. On occasion I consider selling the thing, but when you get right down to it, I like to tinker with the thing as much as I like riding it. (It helps to have another bike that all it requires is turn the key and mash the starter button).
  15. Will they shadow me now??? xxxxxxx@bellsouth.net> Add to Address Book Date: 2007/08/07 Tue PM 05:31:47 EDT To: CC: Add to Address Book Subject: Highway 3 Yazoo County My name is James Pettis and I have a question and a comment. I'm in Yazoo County, What district is this? Yesterday I got a speeding ticket issued by Officer Haymer, C-10 (I can't read the ticket well, this name could be wrong) for 70 in a 55. I have no problem with this tickt, he got me dead to rights. (I am curious why the two vejhicles behind me weren't stoped) I haven't had a ticket in a long time. and after thinking about it i realised that I have redeveloped some bad habits. I think in part because of this highway, Highway 3 . I travel this highway every morning going to work and every evening going home. In the mornings I have delapidated log trucks and chip trucks running 80-90 miles an hour trying to get in a certain number of loads for the day so they can make the check they need for the week. I know this because i have heard them talking on the CB radio about it. I know about their speed because I have checked them up to 90mph. I also have the added pleasure of passenger vehicles trying to get to work on time from Lousiana and from warren county. This is every morning. In the evenings, I have the same compliment of traffic but now they are running behind so i guess they have to push it a little harder so I get tailgaited pretty bad. Did i mention i ride a motorcycle. Not a crotch rocket; but a 1983 Yamaha XVZ1200. This is a Touring bike, not a speed bike. Tailgaiting and motorcycles DO NOT MIX!! I am sick of the dangerous position i and my family am being put in and the fact that every time i ask i am told that we are working on it or we are understaffed. Personally i think that we just dont want to ride up and down a road with nothing on it. On an a good note, Officer Haymer did tell me he was tired of giving breakes to Yazoo county and he would start wrighting 100 tickets a week. Is that a lot? He did show me two tickets that he wrote to truck drivers; but this afternoon. I got tailgaited again. I let him push me up to 60 before he finally had a place to pass. this was a grain truck going back after another load of corn. He turned off at Satartia. No tag on the trailer. I have been working this Job in Yazoo city for 17 years and things are getting worse. They know that if the HP runs the road they will only be here for a day or two and wont be seen again for several months. I think the road needs to be monitored by the highway patrol, not to wright tickets; but to see what i'm talking about. Put a couple of cruisers and motorcycles on the road. Unmarked so they can see the truth of the matter. That's my challenge to the MHP. Come see what i'm talking about then do something about it. I'll bet many of these trucks could be put off of this road just on equipment violations alone. Plaese pass this e-mail on to the appropriate department. And I would like to hear back from someone. Oh, By the way. let me just say again. I got my ticket fair and square. The Officer did his job. I'm not asking for a break and i'm not asking for his resignation or anything like that. Thanks for your time James Pettis
  16. New twist on how to replace the Stator with out pinching your pinkies. I had thought of trying this a long time ago and when the stator went out on me on the way home from FL, I thought what better time. I took 3 long bolts that came from a water pump, Cut off the heads and rounding the cut off end leaving 6.4CM of stud. Then installed them after removing all the bolts from the case. I was waiting for the pull of the magnet & to my surprise it just slid off. Mind the magnet still has resistance but it is easily overcome. When putting the cover back on, the studs will hold the gasket in place and eliminate the heavy pull of the flywheel there for allowing you time to get the shifter shaft through the case with out a hitch. 17. In a 30 mile (or so) radius from me (Amherst, NY) who wouldn't mind my visiting them for a look-over of my bike. I have about one week left, on my warranty period, and would like someone (knowledgeable with the 1st Gens.) maybe take my bike for a test ride, and afford me their opinion. I hope that I am not asking too much, here, and would be willing to pay you for your time. All in all, it would mean ever so much to me, and (quite possibly) alleviate some concerns. Nothing, outside of what has been posted already, has cropped up. But I feel that another - much more experienced - rider just might be able to share some important & very helpful information with me. Advanced thanks. Evergodloving@aol.com 716-906-1692
  18. Hi, Is there a third party alternative source for air filters for the first gens? I need a new one, but last time, the OEM one from local dealer was just over $50 by the time I paid all the sales taxes! I don't see a Fram one in thier catalog, is there anyone who offers one? Thanks, Brian H.
  19. Seems nobody wants to admit to anything .... or few have had embarrassing moments (I doubt that). In 40 years of riding, I've only dumped my bike three times...and each time was when it was standing still !! First time I was parked at the edge of a grassed area. We were all at a party at a campsite. I decided to move my bike, went running across the grassed area and jumped onto my bike (from the side of the kick stand) as though I was the Lone Ranger mounting Silver or something. Granted, I'd had a few brewskies by this time. Well, my momentum when I hit the saddle caused the bike to fall over the opposite side. There I was, sprawled on the ground with my bike on top of me. That was sure the topic for quite a while. Second time was no biggie...it just fell over as I was backing up over bunch grass mounds down a bit of a slope. I didn't get caught under it but needed help from a neighbor to lift it up. Third time (with my 85 VR) I was parked in front of a bike shop. Came out, got on my bike (from the side stand side), plunked my butt down on the seat, heard a *snap* and down I went. Managed to push myself clear as the bike and me fell over. Several "bikers" were milling around and a few got a chuckle at my embarrassment. Had to get help lifting it again. Danged side stand broke. But that wasn't the worst of it. When I got home, I was having trouble getting off the bike and keeping it steady so that it wouldn't fall over... I'm a slender, older guy and that was a bit too much of a task for me (at the time coz I was still rattled from falling off it) so I had to ask this lady and her quite a bit older father to hold the bike steady while I got off and was able to get it onto the centre stand. Unfortunately for me, neither of them spoke english!!! Amazing what sign language can do! Well, I should count my blessings as at least I've never fallen off while in motion (and hopefully never will). That wouldn't be funny or embarrassing at all.
  20. Have 1985 1200 Venture Royale..Left in rain for first time and went to drive the next day and having miss and backfires. Took spark plugs and grounded and noticed 1 and 2 plugs have no spark.. When I try and start these 2 plugs spark one time and do not continue.. And information on where to search for problems. Thank You J McDermott in NJ
  21. When I start the Venture and switch on the cruise control for the first time it always works flawlessly. If I then cancel it and try to resume speed it works sometimes and not every time. If I switch off the cruise control and turn it back on again it usually won't set. Is there anything that I can do to make it work more consistently?
  22. Hello... I just purchased a 2006 RSV. Matter of fact, I traded my '99 Victory for it last Friday. Anyways.. I've been hearing people talking about the new fuels with 10% ethanol and all... Some people have suggested that I put a fuel additive in from "time to time". What is this additive and what will it do for me? If this is not going to mess anything up and work wonders for my bike, what brand names do you all suggest? SpEEd Safely CG
  23. During my 5 day trip I noticed my rstd doesn't always start with the first push of the starter button. Very seldom does it start on the first try. My Vulcan starts always with the first try. Is this usual? Also my buddie was riding an rstd and his didn't start first time many times either. Any comments on this. Bob http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/5/5_2_110.gif http://www.smileycentral.com/sig.jsp?pc=ZSzeb114&pp=ZNxmk393BBUS
  24. I have a 2006 RSTD all I have changed on it is the air filters to (K&N) and I put a set of road king exhaust on it I like the way it sounds now. But when I throttle down to change gears I get a loud Pop most of the time but not always. Now I have read that with these changes I do not need to modify the carbs but why am I getting the backfire? Thanks for the help. PRNTTEK
  25. I have searched the threads to which I have not found the answer I was hoping to find. The question is this, How long can you stay seated on your stock seat before it begins to become uncomfortable. Miles or lenght of time I guess is what I am looking for. It might not be the seat either, just the idea of sitting there not really moving alot. Thanks, David
