  1. Just changed the oil in the 87 Venture and went for a short ride of about 20 miles. I used Yamalube 4 Stroke 15-40. Got out the driveway sped up and noticed a slight clutch slip in 4th gear. By the time I got back to the house it would barely pull up the smallest hill. The dealer assured me this was the "recommended oil" from Yamaha. Any body had problems like this and these wet clutches? You would think that if it were a Yamaha product it would work. There is no engineers stamp on the back just a stamp that says MA and a circle around it. I know this has been a huge topic here on which oil to use but I figured going with brand specific oil with Yamaha's name on it would be good. What should I do? Thanks!
  2. I need to remove the headlight assemblies on my 2009 Silverado. I found the 2 screws on top but don't know if there's a hidden screw or a slip socket. The bottom outside corner seems to have something holding it - too expensive to start ripping too hard. thanks - - - -
  3. Has anybody had a problem similar to this? I took about a 90 mile ride yesterday. the operating temp for the bike never got more than about 1/4 inch above the cold mark on the guage. If I got on the throttle hard the clutch would slip. It was fine under normal conditions. It has never slipped when op temp was up in normal range. (about halfway). Nor does it slip at higher temps. Is this something new developing with my clutch or just an oddity of the brand?
  4. where should I look to buy replacement clutch and springs? Looking for a good price but also a clutch that will last and not slip!!!!
  5. All the conventional wisdom says DON'T use so-called 'energy conserving' synthetics in motorcycles, because they contain additives that increae lubricity (love that word!) so much that wet clutches can slip Well, I decided to ignore that bit of wisdom, and exchanged the bike's Yamalube for 3.7 US quarts of Mobil-1 Extended Service 5W-30. Here's what I've got so far... My bike, with original clutch basket, had always been a pretty loud chirper in 3rd and 4th gear, right in the seet spot of the torque curve on both ratios, and I was trying to get reconciled to dealing with it. Figured I'd try this experiment, though, before putting her to bed for the winter. After the oil change, the chirp/'cricket"/whine has been reduced dramatically, almost to the point that I can only hear it if I reaaaaaly listen for it. Shifting effort has reduced as well, very light touch on the heel/toe to notch the ratios up or down. Absolutely no transition clunk now. And for the life of me I can't discern any weirdness that might indicate the dreaded 'clutch slip' associated with using an energy-conserving oil...but here's the rub. Is ther any chance that there's some kind of undetectable-in-normal-crusing degradation taking place in the tranny? I've put about 500mi on the RSDT since the change two weeks ago, and I sure like the way she's sounding and shifting now...would hate to give that up, es[peciially no longer having to grit my teeh to consciously ignore the bloody straight-cut gear while in around-town prowling. Any thoughts/advice appreciated. I guess the bottom line here is if I can't *feel* any clutch slip, is there anything really to worry about anyway? Now that the autumn weather here in New England is starting to get a bit chancy, I may not be able to give my next experiment a try until spring, but was planning to make the next lube change to Mobil1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel lube that supposedly doens't include any of the extrea-slippery agents... just to see if my crickets/howling monkeys come back.
  6. Hey there, my mufflers on my 86 Venture are rusting out... anybody have a good set of used ones for sale?.... I noticed from searching this site that there was a group buy of Mac mufflers a while ago. I went to the Mac website and they do not show any parts available. Any advice on where to get a new slip on set-up if I can't find a used set? thanks for any help Gary
  7. we need to come up with something better and cheaper , i am thinking of something like the 2nd gens . i have a JD-2 bender and have made headers for cars before . if somebody can come up with a good and eazy design i will try to make it . if we make the pipe coming out the back longer and bend it dif. we could use slip ons . anybody know the ID and OD of the intake and the out take of the pipes ? Squid , you have had both bikes what do you think ? Thom
  8. My wife and I have used "Totes" slip on overshoes when it rains for a lot of years. These are the light weight boots with a zipper on the side. Her boots tore while we were on vacation and she needs a new pair. However, I can't find the ladies slip ons anywhere on the internet (of course I can find the man's "Zipper Town" boots). Does anybody else use slip ons?? Where do you buy them?? Frank
  9. Just got a USED set of BUBS. It appears that the slip-ons will not slide on far enough to accomodate the bolt lining up. I can see the muffler is hitting a stop that is welded. So Is there something I need to do differently? I think I have to cut the Very small amount off the mating end of the slip on. Any help would be appreciated.
  10. I been wanting to change the exhaust on my RSV now for a while. It's all most impossible to find a used set of exhaust for the RSV. I heard most of them, and liked the sound of the Khromewerks the most. I'm giving up on trying to find a exhaust system ( slip on's ) and am looking into buying some HD exhaust slip on, being the HD exhaust are so much easyer to find Whats involed with adding the HD slip on's to the RSV? Also, any suggestions as to which HD exhaust fits the RSV? I did find these on our firms here , and wondering what they sound like, and whats needed to add them onto the bike: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php/product/2157/cat/7 Another concern we had, was the Khromewerks slip on's wasn't to loud. We wanted a nice deep rumble out the back, but somthing that wasn't to over welming that would over power the radio and communcation's, as we ride allot 2-UP, but also wanted somthing for the Friday night rides, where we want to crack the throttle and hear the exhaust, like the HD's. Thanks for your help
  11. I have a 98 rstd. Was going to get slip on mufflers but noticed exhaust is all one piece. When i was shopping for slip ons i noticed they never listed my year of bike-it started in 99. Does anyone make a whole exhaust kit or does anyone have any ideas or who i can turn to for after market support.
  12. Well I just got my new Barron slip on mufflers yesterday. I was wondering if there is anything I need to watch out for or is it very straight forward. Oh yeah, do I need to remove the saddle bags or can they be installed with them on. Thanks Rich
  13. I was out riding today and it was warm. My lower vents are worn and always flop over closed so my legs were toasting. I had to stop at Wally World and pick up a few things and I ended up in the automotive section. I don't know why but I was looking at air freshers and saw these lil slip on jobs that go down inside the vent and have a clip on the side that snaps over the air conditioning vent louver. Wait a minute.....air conditioning vent.......lower air vent.....Hummm? They are the right size to slip in and stay in place. They come in a pack of 4 of a $1.28. It worked like a charm, held the vents wide open and got the breeze back on my knees. Not to mention I still smelled pretty good myself after 200 miles. Not such a selection of manly scents like "Burning Rubber" or "High Octane" but I can get by with vanilla on a hot day. Hey....the ladies like ice cream......right? Who says an air fresher is pointless on a bike? Snaggletooth
  14. Could some one steer me to where I can b y these brackets for this modification. I have RK slip ons! I tried the clasified . Thanks in advance Nevada Max
  15. I am in need of a set of original mufflers for my 97 RSTD. if anyone has a set lying around. My headers are fine. Just need the slip on. Thanks
  16. I've searched the forum and see many references to using the wrong engine oil (energy conserving type) which may cause clutch slipping. If this is the case, are you saying that just changing the oil (and filter) to the correct type will clear up the problem? Is the slip something you would notice at the higher rpms(5k+) in higher gears?
  17. I went to pick my son up from school today on my 1999 rsv and the clutch was slipping when I would get the rpm's up high. It was slipping in about every gear. I parked it for about 15 minutes at the school. When I got back on it and started home it wouldn't slip for nothing. I tried everything to get it to slip, but it ran fine. Anyone know what my problem might be? Thanks hairman
  18. I was just going through the maint. section and reading all the good info there. Your article on clutch slip was really good but you metioned how it was strange that the the clutch would slip in high gear and not in low gear. This is actually is not strange at all as the higher you go up the gear pattern the more load there is placed on the clutch. In transport trucks drivers will often complain that there clutch is slipping on hill climbs we verify this in the shop by placing the transmission in its highest gear then gently let the clutch out. This will either cause the clutch to slip or stall the engine. If we did this in low gear even a clutch that is starting to slip would tear out the driveline unless it was slipping really bad. One thing we really have to watch is as the engines come with higher horse power the force on the driveline increases. wouldn't want to explain that one to a customer. hope you dont tak take this the wrong way and as always keep up the great work.
  19. It's becoming evident to me that my clutch is needing some repair. It has lasted 53,000 miles, and now it will slip if I get into the gas even moderately hard. Is all that's happened here for the clutch to slip that the spring has gotten weak? For a stock rebuild, assuming the steel plates and friction discs are still usable, is it basically just replacing the spring with a new one? I've never been into a motorcycle clutch, or a clutch on any other vehicle either. So referring to TT's clutch article, I have a few questions. The upgrade consists of what parts, exactly, the heavier PCW spring and a full size plate in the back? Is the Barnett pressure plate a part of the upgrade, or is it a same as stock replacement? How do I know if the pressure plate needs replacing?
  20. Removed stock slip on mufflers on 2007 midnight venture while waiting on new khrome werks slip on mufflers. Found out that i could not remove the metallic exhaust gaskets without tearing. Does anyone know if the khrome werks will come with gastkets or do i have to find locally.
  21. I have a neighbor I would very much like to annoy so what would be the cheapest set of slip on pipes for a 07 RSV? Thanks Phil
  22. Is anyone here running the Baron 4-2-4 Nasty Boy Slip-On pipes on their Venture? If so.......What did you use for a gasket where the pipes actually slip on the exhaust pipe? I have hunted high and low and cannot find, or even determine, if gaskets are needed for these Slip On pipes. Thanks for any info/responses. Regards...........Boomer
  23. hey can't seem to find here anywhere whether ulta classic slip ons will fir 07 rsv thanks Brian D.
  24. Just picked my 2007 RSTD and love it. IT's to dam quite. Need some input on which slip on's to use? Also will I have to have the carb's rejeted. Thanks Marty
  25. I feel as I should Apologize to everyone for not checking in once in a while. You know how it is you get tided up into the daily living and forget about the help and friends that are right in front of you.. Until life reaches out and grabs you by the ...... Well in any case here is my problem... was out riding the other night with my 04 trike and as I went through the gears I though I felt the clutch slip. But when I tried to make it slip latter by accelerating in 5th gear going up a hill it felt fine. But latter I thought I felt it again.. Now my question is....am I losing my mind or is this what happens when the clutch starts to go out ? Any help is welcome Thanks Mike
