stator / battery upgrade
GeorgeS replied to gunboat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Its the PC 680 for 1st Gens. Should be same for yours. -
As I recall, the Beemer riders I ran into during those years were mostly just interested in one thing. !! Racking UP Lots of MILES. And changing a lot of Tires, and doing a lot of Valve Adjusting !!! I remember hearing about one guy, who had 3 Million Miles on a 1966 model, and it was still going, that was around 1995, I read the story about him. ( as I remember he was in his 80's then ) As I recall, he claimed a valve job every 50K, and a lower End Overhaul every 1 million miles. He always kept a Spare Set of Heads ready to install, at 50K, so as not to have more then one day of down time.

Thanks for the Info. I did not know that. Probably where mine is leaking. I will check into that.

I thought you were going to start selling off the 1st Gens, and get a 2nd Gen !! ????? Mine leaks at the Stator wires, but I gave up on fixing it. Not that bad of a leak, anyway, leak brings back fond memories of my 47 Harley !! Rain no problem for me, I'm 300 feet above the nearest River !! I made sure of that before I bought my house here. Thers a river every 10 miles, so you have to be carefull if you want to buy Real Estate in the Seattle area. The fools are still building new houses, 50 feet from the river banks!!!

I guess I missed the reason for this job. Why are you pulling the pan off ?? Just curious

If you do a good job, maby Santa will bring you a New Harley !!!

83 Venture overheating Help
GeorgeS replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You will have to remove the lower fairings on each side for hose replacement. Also, you need to pull out the "Heat Baffels " One over the fwd cylinders, and one over the rear cylinders. Have you found the Diagram on page 4-1 of the service manual. This " Flow chart " might help you . Don't forget to take your radiator, to a radiator specilist and have it checked. Untill you know that its Flow Rate is good, you will be beating your head against the wall. If that radiator was crudy before it was parked for 5 years, you are probably going to need a different radiator. -
Show her how much the Sales Tax will be on a new Bike !!

I bought Gas at a Chevron Station, in Olympia Wa. last Week. Went into conviencence store there to get a cup of Coffee. At last min. I asked for a pack of Cigs !! The lady got them, then asked to see my ID !!!!!!! I asked her if I appeared to be about 65 years old to her, and she said " yes you do " I then told her she could keep the pack of cigs . Paid for the coffee and left.

Just a qustion. I bought my 89 new. As I recall I did my first Engine, and Rear drive oil change at about 700 miles. There was a very small amount of shaveings on the magnetic plug of the rear drive. However nothing like what I'm hearing as to the 2nd gens. Sounds like something went Downhill as far as Quality in those rear drive units. Just a thought. Any comments?

The Air Fell Out of My Rear Tire, And the RideOn Didn't Seem to Work
GeorgeS replied to 86er's topic in General Tech Talk
Well, the Ride On got you home after you picked up the nail. ?? I would say it did its job just fine, I would be more then happy with that, and money well spent. ( cheaper then a tow truck ) -
I reccomend doing a Google Search of this subject " Deep Oil " ( not peak oil ) You will find several hits will come up. Read up, then ask yourself why we are not hearing much about this on the national news outlets ??

P/N 26H-81670-10-00. I found them on line at a dealer, listed on IPC , price is $356.75 New. IF thats what you need. Go to almost any dealer web site, and pull up the IPC, look under your year and model, and then the " Generator Section" of the IPC. But you might find a set on E-Bay.

newbie gas mileage question
GeorgeS replied to mcdds86's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I would take the covers off of each Carb, pull out the Diaphrams and check the rubber for Holes. This is common. If they have never been changed on your bike, you can assume that you need new ones, simply due to Ageing !! They are about $85 apiece. Sorry: Also, drain your Carb Bowls, and drain the gas tank, there is about 3/4 gallon of gas in the bottom of the tank that never gets used, Sombody may have drained it in the last 5 years, but make sure!!! -
Its just one darn thing after another !!

Ask FreeBird to Post this In the maintanance library !!! With your photo's.

On 1st gens, usually the Springs get weak, long before any wear on the plates. As a rule of thumb, the Plates do not wear out though. Most folks, just replace the springs, or use new V-Max springs. Or, there are better complete aftermarket units available. Mine went at about 30K, I put in a complete Barnett unit. However the Old plates were not worn. Complete Barnett Units, are about same price as complete OEM Replacment clutch. Also, around 50K its a good idea to rebuild the hydralic actuation system, or At Least, rebleed the system, replaceing All of the Fluid with a Synthetic brake fluid. ( Valvoline Synthetic brake fluid is a good choice )

In the next month or so, "Cabela's " will be opening a New Store in Lacy, Wa. ( close to Olympia, Wa. ) Right off I-5. If you are traveling I-5 and need a new Shirt, or whatever, don't miss it.

You are Correct, thats my point. Apparently a few folks in Sarasota, Fla. don't agree with you.

Well, Helmets won't prevent the Accident, Concentrate on the cause of the accident. As a percentage, Alcohol, is involved in about 50 percent, of All Accidents. The next highest factor, was Lack of rideing experience. Those rideing less then 6 months. And I suppose some in this catagory also fall into the first catagory. I would then add, failure to drive Defensively. Also, the " Sport Bike " in and of itself, is not the problem, Its the Idiot, with lack of driveing experience that causes the Crash. I have a Sport Bike, Frankly its a much safer bike then my Venture. Why?? It weighs 250 lb less. ( it can stop faster ) It has twice the brakeing power It has the ability to accellerate Away from a Threat, in much less time. The steering is much ( MUCH ) more responsive The tires have a much larger " patch " in contact with the road. The tires have much more Traction ( but they wear out faster ) The Suspension, is far superior to a touring bike ( any touring bike) However, It does require much more self control.
