Oil!! Just change it as you should. That is the most important thing. Use a good brand without friction modifiers. I have been using Castrol 20/50 since the early 60's. Off the shelf at Wally World. Never had a oil related problem. I won't pay the prices for motorcycle oil. I have other things to waste money on. I run 40 front 42 rear in tires. Running at max called for on sidewall is best way to go with most. Tire pressure is important in handling. NGKs the book calls for are great plugs. You can spend a lot more but I'm not sure you gain anything. A C plugs also work well and at a buck and a half hard to beat for quick tune up. NGKs seem to last better. You do need a tool to remove bolts in bottom of tubes to do seals and I can't remember right now. It might be in our tech library. Progressives?? Again I don't remember who I got them from. Do a search for them or somebody should know.

Double Yellow line and just not paying enough attention. Pick a better spot to pass. Not saying I haven't done things like that but would have had a better eye on cage I was passing and expect him to break the law just like I was. PAY ATTENTION!! And practice braking.

You could start a lot of places with this. Just start checking connections in cables. And you may have been right in your 1st guess. Check battery to see if it has charge. Check fuses carefully. If it is a old orginal box they can break if you wiggle them hard. -

I'm thinking 83-85 fit and 86 up changes something but can't remember what right now. Just mounting brackets?? E-Bay is still the best place to watch for this stuff. The back rests don't come cheap.

What Brian said. They don't crap out very often on the 1st Gens. Can be had pretty easy on E-Bay. Progressive on rear although if you want it is a good thing but prepare to pay. I would go with a used stock one from E-Bay.
