another 2nd gear question
scottbly replied to DesertRider's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I recently purchase a 2nd parts bike for it's fairings and radio. I just got my 83 venture dressed up and have been driving 40 miles to work and back daily with no issues and just rolled over 40,000. Now I realize that both of my parts bikes have the punch mark and my primary bike does not. What do I look for as impending signs of 2nd gear failure? How hard is it to swap the transmission from a donor bike with 50,000 and the punch mark? Thanks -
Looking for...

Is the triangle piece the same as an 83-85? I have a set that even Condor would admit are in "very good" shape. -
Does anyone have a supplier and part information for purchasing the just the rubber seals/washers on the piston in a 83 rear master brake cylinder, rather than buying a complete rebuild kit? Parts should be only a dollar or two. Does anyone have feedback on my cheapskate idea?

I have this hitch from a first gen. It bolt to the exhaust pipe mounts. You would have to make a support and connect from the tabs on the hitch to some where on the frame. My other hitch connected just inside the fender. I have also seen them clamped to the saddle bag support bar. You can have this one for $25 plus shipping. Needs clean up and paint. I also have one much nicer listed on ebay with a tour package (?).

I have this hitch from a first gen. I don't have any other mounting hardware. $25 plus shipping. I also listed what I think is a tour package with hitch, lights, mud flap and all hardware on ebay.

I have one in excellent condition. $50 free shipping.

I listed a hitch from an 84 VR on ebay if anyone is interested.

Turn Signal Problems
scottbly replied to bendtdj's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My turn signals did not work at all, but my hazzard lights did work. I did not know I had a hazard switch until I found hanging inside my fairing. The book says to disconnect your automatic cancelling system to determine if it is the cause of the problem, but it did not work for me. After looking at the wiring diagram I noticed that one of the wires from the flasher unit goes to this system. I had already replaced the flasher unit with no change. For some silly reason, I suspected the new flasher unit was bad, so I tried the two prong hazzard light flasher unit in the three prong signal light plug. Presto my signal lights work. They do not automatically cancel, but I did not know motorcycles had auto-cancel so who cares. -
For an 83 Venture? Please PM or email. Thanks

So, I have my newly aquired 83 Venture running and stopping fairly well thanks to all the threads in the first gen library. Thanks to all. However, I am little confused about carb adjustments. I seem to be getting poor gas milage and my plugs are black and wet. I saw the thread about replacing the plastic spacers on the jets, but I also see lots of references to set screws at 2-3 turns. Does my bike have fuel/air set screws and if so where are they? The bike starts and runs well. I have not ran it enough to get an accurate MPG, mostly because I have the speedo disconnected due to the darn noise (I guess that is my next project).

I bought my first big bike (83 Venture) last week and have been work out the bugs. I got all the dash gagets working except the temp gauge. Is the sending unit next to the fan switch? If so, I swapped it out with one from a parts bike but got no change. The fans does come on when it gets hot. Is there a way to check the gauge without removing the fairing? Are all the fuses on top of the battery? Thanks guys

I just bought a parts bike. I think the rails are still on it. It is a 1983 venture. I will take a look after work.
